Cool and clear video! But we should keep in mind that elipses are always perpendicular to the cilinders(the wheel) axis. so the elipse axis being straight square to the ground is not aplyable in perspective.
I agree but... many of the subscribers to this channel and those who watch are not as advanced as you. They are just starting to put together the understanding of how to draw cars. In my tutoring and teaching experience, many new students draw the wheels off axis to the ground. They will never be able to have the understanding of how to draw the ellipse as you described if they first do not understand that the wheels themselves must be square to the ground. Everyone is at a different point in their development. These early videos are designed to provide a foundation to build the more advanced skills. Thanks for your feedback!

Excellent video not to be found elsewhere. The only thing that would have made it better (more beginner-friendly) is if simple outlines of the cars had been included with the sketches of the wheels. It's hard for beginners like me to imagine the rest of the car.
One step at a time M.R.,, one step at a time. :-) Most beginners that so much trouble drawing circles and ellipses freehand that adding more complexity too soon will only make a hard thing even harder. Hello, thank you for the response! Im studying in Turkey/Istanbul. Im actually thinking about the udemy course... Im currently trying to improve my skills based on your tutorials on youtube. After I master them I will proceed to the next step which is the course. I think ive been feeling a little bit better with the angled table after sketching for 8 hours. On non-angled tables my arm have a motion that is parallel to the tables surface where on an angled table i cannot keep my arm parallel to the angled surface and its almost like im learning to draw ellipses again.
In a way, you are. But your overall skills are getting better. That is what is important. I find that most people are not really interested in getting better. They just want to do the things they are comfortable with. Real growth comes from admitting you have something to improve upon, which is generally uncomfortable for most people. It's good to hear you are working so hard to improve. The udemy courses are more in depth than what is here on YT but some of the YT vids are actually more advanced. Sam - Yes, at some point we will do videos on color and rendering. It's a much more advanced part of drawing cars so it is important to get the basics of what your drawing down first. Putting color over a poorly drawn form just gives you a bad drawings with color on it. Not so much the wheels, but I see a lot of people drawing cars and using the circles as a means to measure out the length of the car and the scale, I was always curious how that worked out, I might just snap pictures of cars and figure out how they determine the scale based on that, with my old architect mentality, but I sought out that “Idrawcars” stuff and it seems sketchy as hell since there’s no update on their website, no feedback after I reached out via email, etc. I am not spending money to learn something and burn cash and it seems like not many people have any lessons on that method either.
V- I cannot speak to what others are doing. I state repeatedly in the videos throughout my channel that most cars have 3 wheels between their wheels. If you use this as a point of departure, you should be fine. You can add half a wheel for something like a pickup truck and reduce by half a wheel for a city car. If you're interested in seeing what a difference using this method can make to your designs, I would watch the "Improve My Car Sketch" series. You should hold the pen in a way that is comfortable for you. The only "wrong" way to hold the pen or pencil would be in a way that would not allow you to maximize your control. I have seen some people hold their pen or pencil at a very shallow angle to the page. This prevented them from getting better at being able to draw a light line when the wanted to and a heavier line when they needed to.
Eric - It can provide stability. Holding the pencil is like a fingerprint. Everyone does it in a slightly different way. You have to find what works for you and not be concerned about a "right" or "wrong" way.

You have to be very careful with camber. If doing an F1 concept it's more appropriate. But for a road car showing camber can look like you don't know what you are doing if the rest of your sketch is not at a very high level. If you look at most pro car design drawings, the wheels are square to the road. If not in the right context, adding camber will just look very amateurish.

Once you learn the technique you can draw any size circle or pretty much anything else. Practice as much as you can. Don;'t worry about drawing cars for a while.
This is way to much complicated... just use one rule: The ellipse just needs to be right angled to the direction of the axis it belongs to... When you do that its always right
I agree with you but it's not always right if the ellipse is not drawn at a right angle to the ground plane. I look at hundreds of drawings a month from aspiring car designers and students and the biggest problem is the wheels drawn off axis to the ground plane. Students need to understand the value of drawing the wheel at a right angle to the ground plane first. Then they can be exposed to the more advanced way of looking at it per your suggestion.
You're assuming the person watching knows of or understands (the rules of) perspective in any way. It's very hard to get someone to understand the concept you eloquently explained in your first comment if they don't understand perspective in the first place. Even if I show them in a video or during class, the wheels are still drawn off axis. If I can get them to get them to understand that the vertical axis of the wheel needs to be at a right angle to the ground plane, then I can introduce the more advanced concept you spoke about in your first comment. Think about how you would teach someone to draw wheels and tires if they didn't understand perspective.
@@howtodrawcars. the first comment was not by me, I didn't explain anything. I just said, that it is wrong, because it clearly is. An ellipse is defined by TWO axises(?! Sorry don't know the plural). One axis (the one identical to the actual wheel's center axis) intersects with the ellipse in the ellipse's most narrow points. The other axis (which is perpendicular to the first axis) intersects with the ellipse in the ellipse's most wide points. That's it! This is how you construct an ellipse. How wide the ellipse is, is another topic and basically unnecessary for drawing purposes. The axis vertical to the ground is not vertical or perpendicular to anything as soon as you draw from perspective, so that is useless.
but, your explanation of ellipses is absolutely and utterly wrong. Major axis shouldn't be perpendicular to the ground plane and has nothing to do with drawing wheels. The minor axis acts as the axle and needs to go to the vanishing point. sorry
The majority of the students I work with do not draw their wheels squarely to the ground plane or draw their wheels to look as if they are actually connected to the cars bodies sitting above them. This is a major problem if you are trying to create a believable drawing of a new car design. Many students do not fully understand perspective. My goal is to present this information in the most basic way possible so that a passionate 14, 15 or 16 year old with no formal training in any artistic discipline can improve their drawings. Nothing is worse than a nice car design drawing ruined by wheels drawn off-axis and wobbly. The purpose of the video is to correct this by reminding the viewer that wheels and tires are in fact, perpendicular to the ground plane and should be represented as such. How To Draw Cars so, you're saying that nothing is worse than drawing the wheels off- axis and you're teaching exactly that. Don't want to argue, I just felt obligated to point out that the absurdity of your way of teaching can't be justified by saying how students don't understand the perspective basics. You just cannot teach something that is utterly wrong.
I appreciate your passion for the subject. I’m not asking you to show me how to draw wheels. I’m asking you to share your method for drawing wheels. I know the other method where the minor axis is perpendicular to the axles and the vertical off the ground plane has nothing to do with setting up the wheel, if this is what you are on about. Do you know how many students draw their wheels correctly after showing them this method? Less than 5%. It works if you are more advanced and have had some formal training. If not, It can cause more confusion and the student can loose confidence, quickly creating a big setback. I am sure there are plenty of vids on youtube showing this alternative method. I encourage everyone that watches this video to go and watch them too. The problem is, it does not solve the problem of young designers drawing wobbly wheels. I was as frustrated with their lack of progress as you are with me inventing a new way to try and correct it. And if it takes inventing a new way to get young designers from point A to point B and that flies in the face of conventional thinking, so be it. My question to you is, would it possible for a student with a every limited understanding of perspective, who is having trouble drawing wheels and keeping them square to the ground plane, learn to draw wheels that are square to the ground plane using the method that I outline in the video? Not whether it’s the "correct" way. Just, is it possible? Thanks again for raising the issue.

3 wheels between the wheels. Watch some of the videos that cover the side and perspective views. They go over the proportion of the wheelbase.

The majority of the students I work with do not draw their wheels squarely to the ground plane or draw their wheels to look as if they are actually connected to the cars bodies sitting above them. This is a major problem if you are trying to create a believable drawing of a new car design. Many students do not fully understand perspective. My goal is to present this information in the most basic way possible so that a passionate 14, 15 or 16 year old with no formal training in any artistic discipline can improve their drawings. Nothing is worse than a nice car design drawing ruined by wheels drawn off-axis and wobbly. The purpose of the video is to correct this by reminding the viewer that wheels and tires are in fact, perpendicular to the ground plane and should be represented as such. How To Draw Cars so, you're saying that nothing is worse than drawing the wheels off- axis and you're teaching exactly that. Don't want to argue, I just felt obligated to point out that the absurdity of your way of teaching can't be justified by saying how students don't understand the perspective basics. You just cannot teach something that is utterly wrong.

I’m not asking you to show me how to draw wheels. I’m asking you to share
your method for drawing wheels. I know the other method where the minor axis
is perpendicular to the axles and the vertical off the ground plane has nothing to
do with setting up the wheel, if this is what you are on about.
Do you know how many students draw their wheels correctly after showing them this method?
Less than 5%. It works if you are more advanced and have had some formal training. If not, It can
cause more confusion and the student can loose confidence, quickly creating a big setback.
I am sure there are plenty of vids on youtube showing this alternative method. I encourage
everyone that watches this video to go and watch them too.
The problem is, it does not solve the problem of young designers drawing wobbly wheels.
I was as frustrated with their lack of progress as you are with me inventing a new way to try and correct it.
And if it takes inventing a new way to get young designers from point A to point B and that flies in the face of conventional thinking, so be it.
My question to you is, would it possible for a student with a every limited understanding of perspective, who is having trouble drawing wheels and keeping them square to the ground plane, learn to
draw wheels that are square to the ground plane using the method that I outline in the video?
Not whether it’s the "correct" way.
Just, is it possible?
