- It's been a long time coming, but I finally got this video done...and just in time for spring coop building!! I tried to be extremely detailed in my commentary and I hope that, with this video, the average DIYer can tackle this project with little to no construction experience. I will likely create basic plans for the basic framing of this coop. Let me know if you have any questions!
Here is a link to a pic w some basic framing measurements for this coop. The roof pic is of angles not wood lengths. www.flickr.com...
If you are looking for the shorter version of this video without commentary, you will find that here: • Chicken Coop: Step-by...
Here is a link to my other coop build video which I mention frequently during the commentary: • Easy to Clean Chicken ...
The nesting box portion begins at 17:07 in that video.
And here is a link to the material I used for the nesting box roof: www.homedepot....
Great video and directions. I want a coop, but not a $2,000 one. Thanks for your effort here.
I'm a good plummer and Mechanic. But, never have I built anything Carpentry wise...I really appreciate Your time and knowledge.
Thank You
Im a decent builder but a horrible plumber and mechanic. Haha
You've have explained this so well I think I can do this on my own . Great video.
Bless up E Flemings,
I have been in search for a while of a decent build for our 4 year old farmer man. This runs across my screen this a.m. and will be our 1st coop build. Keep your heart light and very much appreciate your efforts in producing this content.
A host of valuable info there- thanks for taking the time to add the voice over, it was super helpful!
Turned out great! LOve the rustic look.
Can't wait to make my own. Thank you for all the videos you make.
Thank you for this video.....I know I can build my own.....blessings brother!
Great video, one of the best really, I have watched many
I’ve got a new coop built and a new video is in the works. Stay tuned!
m.ruclips.net/video/JsL5g_WO4zI/видео.html. Here you have it!
It’s better the way you did that. Excellent job. I wouldn’t change anything you did but that’s the whole part of doing it yourself materials your sourced yourself..
This was so helpful. Thank you.
really love this build. i love to tinker. And a tightwad
Thanks for sharing your video. I was in the same boat. I ended up building my coop and run out of every scrap of wood I could find on my surburban property. I only bought The roof hinges handles and locks and chicken wire for 9 chickens. My husband said I over built, He said it would hold a baby elephant inside. Guess what I had on hand was baby elephant material? Ha!
😂. Perfect!
Thanks allot. I am going to pallets as you do. I got a lot knowledge from you. Thank and see you latter
You are still as hot as you were 6 years ago! Love the vid. Gonna be building a second coop and will use these plans
Good content and good sharing. Like
Good job bro..👍👍👍👍
nice job
Probably best to screw the roof down on top of the corrugation, not in the valley, even with rubber grommets, it will eventually leak..You could use a piece of timber about 6 inches long with a screw in one end on the top edge above your door as a gravity latch, instead of a nail....Good Job !!
I’ll add those 6 inch pieces of timber at the bottom in addition to the nails (at the top). Thanks for the suggestions!
Structural screws are very strong compared to carriage bolts.
Thanks for posting this I have finally convinced my hubby to let me get chickens!! Wondering if you have a video showing how to add a run to this coop?
Unfortunately, I do not have any videos of the run construction. :-(
Very good. Love it. 👌🏼
The only thing i would do different is put the hinges on the inside, only for esthetic
👍
I wonder if you used 3 tab shingles, if you could forgo the roofing underlayment, and perhaps save $33. or there about.
You got ear protection on but not eye ? lol haha man you wild GREAT VIDEO
😂. Yeah, i have the hardest time w eye protection. It gets sweaty and foggy. I figure, I’m safer with no glasses vs ones I can’t see out of.
Your videos are phenomenal! The time you put into these are SO appreciated! One question, at what heights do you notch the 4x4s? I may have missed that somewhere, but I wasn't sure! Thank you!!
Thank you! Shortly after I make the notch cuts, I think I give the measurements and show them on the screen. It’s easy to miss, cause they aren’t up there for long
This is an epic video. Da chickens needs new coup doe😳
starting to build a coop very similar so I thank you for the invaluable help and guidance you have given through your videos. I was wondering though, if the supporting members (4:30) could be at the same level to give added strength to floor? I was only thinking if i needed to get inside to do any work , my coop will be approx 3x5
Hey, I think I understand the question. The coop is designed this way so that the nesting box can be framed up as part of the coop (not added on separately). The one set of notches is lower, but the nesting box framing rests on the 2x4 that goes between those posts. The coop will absolutely hold you (and even a friend). I framed up a 4x4 coop the same way and stood on top of the platform (I weigh 250lbs).
Building the rafters, requires a person to know how to use a square. Once you get the proper pitch it goes really quick.
Love it, been waiting for this. I will be going through with this build soon (Corona/Quarantine Project). Any Plans available? Please
Thanks! At bare minimum I should be able to get measurements for the 4x4 posts, notch heights, and all the cross pieces. Will try to get those done tomorrow
E Fleming take your time. No immediate rush but id definitely love to be able to replicate this with accurate plans
I know this is an older video, but it sure came in handy for me today as I need to build something as cheap & easy as possible to separate some hens. I only have 1 question if you see this comment: How do you wear a headlamp to work in the dark and not attract a face full of bugs? I thought one would be a great hands-free option when doing late night chores, but the bugs made it impossible to do anything with it on.
You’re right! The bugs get pretty bad! My wife was very pregnant and we were coming up to the due date….had to get the coop done!
Thank you for you clear explanations. Can you enclose the link for the flat roof? Great work! I really enjoyed this video.
Sure thing! Here’s a link to the plans for the other coop. www.flickr.com/photos/coopinstructions/albums/72157651271236350
I used a water proof sealant paint on the floor. I will use construction sand on the floor as it cleaned up like kitty litter.
Sounds like a plan. That should work well. If you put plastic bins or trays directly under the roosts, you’ll save yourself some time and sand. Id say 90% of the droppings in the coop are found under roosts. Put a slight sprinkle of sand in the trays, and it’ll keep the droppings from sticking. Just like putting flour on a cooking surface when kneading dough. Haha
Add a 2x4 to top of metal sawhorses.
Great video. We've been watching the 1st one and my son is about to start construction. How many birds do you recommend in each of these coop designs?
You’ll want 3-4 square feet of coop space per bird, so the 4x4 coop (16 square feet) could hold 4-5 chickens...maybe 6-7 if you’ve got a good bit of space for them during the day. The pallet wood exterior coop is about 12 square feet and would be good for 3-4 chickens. You’ll find some who say you can do as low as 2 square feet of coop space per chicken, but that can lead to some pretty cranky birds...especially if they don’t have much run space or have to spend a lot of time “cooped up” over the winter.
I wish you have shown how to do the angle on the roof and the nesting box.
I believe the coop roof was around a 20 degree cut, and the nesting box was probably more like 15. You can set the angle on a miter saw.
It's ok if the cord on the saw gets cut.....just have the person who cut it, pay for a new saw!🤣😂
wait at which point did you use the pallet wood lol i though the whole build was pallet wood.
Hey I’m planning on making this build sometime next month, what do you think the total cost for this would be 🤔, also this is a great vid👍
The total cost as is was about 180, but I would do linoleum floor and real locks on the door. That would bring it to 200. If you have a small nail gun, you’ll save a good bit of money on screws - those were a huge expense in making this coop
Looks awesome do you have plans for this coop or a material list?
Unfortunately, not for this one. I did put together a very rough sketch of the basic framing. www.flickr.com/photos/coopinstructions/49801624427/in/dateposted-public/
if you do the ramp 33:42 without grip pieces the chicken will not be able to climb up to the coop? I see everyone is doing them, but I wonder if they are really necessary.
The chickens would probably be fine in dry weather, but if it’s muddy or snowy they would have a tougher time.
Great build! Did you ever make a set of plans for this one? I saw the other video linked for the other coup but I have been gathering pallets so I'd like to go for this one!
Hey, I never did any substantial plans for this coop, but there’s one link in the video description to a very rudimentary drawing w some dimensions.
Please can you send me the geometric design and all the measurements as well as the length, width, height and everything
Hello, I didn’t put together a plan for this coop, just some very basic drawings which you’ll find in the RUclips video description
How many chickens can fit in here?
How many pallets did you grab to get the amount of wood you needed?
Maybe 15? However many fit into my pickup
@@E_Fleming thanks so much! I need to go get more!! And you are a life saver by showing me how to cut the pallets. I gave up wanting to do in pallet wood because of what a pain. Still I see little time it will take compared to hammering each. Thanks!
Hi, do you happen to have the material list for this build?
I’ll see if I can find a list of what i bought
E Fleming thanks
Do you have the measurements of the cuts for the 4x4s? How high did you make the first cut? And the length of the 2x4 that extends to the nesting box? Currently started this project! Got all my pallets cut up sanding tomorrow and then starting the build😬
This isn’t pretty yet, but hopefully it will get you started. www.flickr.com/photos/coopinstructions/49801624427/in/dateposted-public/
E Fleming thank you!!
Mr. Fleming! We at Cat's Claw have been enjoying the farm and ranch side of the internet while we are covid-cooped up, just like the chickens! We would like to send you something to make fencing projects easier. Do you have a PR mailbox you use?
- Toby-Jeanne
How much wood do you use tryna make the same one
Hard to say. I probably used 10-12 pallets, plus the 4x4 posts and maybe five 8 foot 2x4 (or 2x3 if you prefer).
How do they like the roost? I thought one bar had to be higher than other.
As I was researching for the coop build, some said that having different height roosts can create a pecking order / competition over what birds slept where. I ended up selling this particular coop, but i never I didn’t have any issue with my other coop which also roosts at the same height.
@@E_Fleming built a modification of your first coop at my old house and looking to do another one at my new house.
My roosts were the same height and they fought about which spot to sit in. LOL
How many chickens do you think fit in this size coop? Less regulations at my new place and I want to be efficient with space. The free range area will be much bigger than the coop.
😂 A general rule of thumb would be 8-10 square feet of run space per bird, and 2-4 square feet of coop space per bird. So a 4x4 coop could hold a maximum of 8 birds, but I’d probably do more like 5 or 6…unless they have a lot of space to free range during the day. You also want to make sure you have enough nesting boxes (1 for every two birds) and roost space (roughly 10-12 inches per bird).
@@E_Fleming great info - thank you! Also thanks for your videos, they’ve been immensely helpful!
How long was that 4x4 before you cut it in half
8 feet
Are there only 2 nesting boxes in this coop?
Yes, it will hold 4 chickens and two nesting boxes is adequate
😁😆😅😂🥰😍😘
Why would build in the dark to make a video? and the video was always extreme close ups ? Where was the finished product! ?
Sorry I was working in the dark the night before my wife’s due date. I was trying to get it done before our baby was born.
did you do plans for this coop?
Hello, you’ll find very rudimentary plans in the video description.
First
F frumos si greu de lucrat
Would of-been nice if you would of cut it off till next day.so we could see what you are doing.
My wife was literally 40 weeks pregnant as I was trying to finish this coop. I worked at night because I was down to the wire and needed to get it done.
What did you do for the nesting box?
Hmmm I’m not sure what you mean
Like the internal part of the nesting box I’m literally building this right now lol and that’s one of the last things I need to do just not sure how/ the inside of it needs to look like?
Nevermind I saw your other video thanks man!
Frogs…
🤔
@@E_Fleming It was frogs you were hearing in the video not crickets. No offense I was just trying to be funny…

Seeeeeriously! I was in Home Depot the other day and noticed that 😳
Why do people doing these videos think they need to be safety police I don't need anybody telling me to wear PPE and I don't need anybody tell me to wear masks I like this one is do as I say not as I do
Can’t speak for every channel, but I don’t want anyone getting hurt, and i don’t want anybody to sue me if they do get hurt.
@@E_Fleming how are they going to sue you.

Hate these fast moving videos. What’s the point? Anyway….
I had probably 8 hours of video, and much of it is repetition of the same task. I slow down and describe what I’m doing in the tricky sections. A sped up version gives the gist of what’s happening in those repetitious segments.
