    1:00 I’ve had chicken for around 3 years now and I’ve learned a lot. Pine shaving for baby chicks is not the best option. They don’t know the difference between crumble and small shaving. They could get compacted. Hopefully not but why take the chance. A better option blue shop towel with a little bit of crumble feed on the floor near the feeder. 👍🏼

      The hen house part is 4’ x8’ full sheet of plywood for the bottom. The entire coop is 8’ deep by 18’ long. We used true 2”x4” lumber that we milled ourselves, but purchased 2x4’s would work fine. If you live in a heavy snow load area you might want larger lumber for the rafters. The front boards are 8’ tall and the back are 6’8” tall. If you want a steeper roof you could go shorter on the back. The hutch part has 4x4’s for the corner posts. 😊👍

      Material list for chicken coop
      (4) 8 foot 4x4’s
      (10) 8 foot two by fours for uprights
      (12) 8 foot two by fours for edging
      (16 or 18) 10 foot two by fours for rafters
      (4) two by fours for nest box
      (4) 14 foot 2 x4 for top and bottom perimeter
      (7) 8 foot two by sixes for hutch
      (3) 8 foot two by sixes for door
      (13) 2 x4 for diagonals and small doors and floor joists
      (16) 10 foot one by fours for roof and blocking
      Wood for ramp
      (2) 4 x 8 sheets of plywood
      Vinyl flooring if you want it
      100 foot roll of 4 foot wide hardware cloth half inch (we used black plastic coated from Amazon)
      Extra 2 foot wide hardware cloth or wire for perimeter apron
      Hinges and latches
      (8) 10’ long pieces of metal roofing. (Cut one into shorter pieces for the top of the nest boxes)

      Hi Tom, yes definitely a lot easier 🤣 that was one day, plus some time sawing the wood. I think it will take about a week’s worth of work to finish. The rock is the corner post for our garden fence. You just drive a metal post into the ground, then cut a length of fence and make it into a cylinder around the post. Then you just gradually fill it up with rock. Good way to use up random shaped rocks and pretty easy to do.

      @natureartgirl  Год назад

      Not right now. We haven’t had time to draw them up. But if you are fairly handy, it is not hard to figure out by the videos. We tried to make it pretty detailed. We will try to get some plans drawn up whenever we get some time😊

      We haven’t drawn out any detailed plans. We’ve been crazy busy lately. But it’s not too hard to figure out. Your dimensions would be somewhat different than ours since we used our own rough cut wood. It’s actual 2”x4” boards. If we get some time we will try to draw up some. We’ve had a lot of requests for them. 😊

      We do not have plans, but there is an approximate list of materials in the video description. You can probably figure out the rest just by watching the videos. We cover most of the details and it is a pretty simple design. 😊

    We painted everything before we assembled our coop + run combo just to minimize rain intrusion as much as possible & touched up anything we nailed or drilled with silicone - just in case. 8 years on & no rotting - so far. Only the 4x4s & 2x4s touching the ground were pressure treated.
    I thought about going with coated hardware cloth, but since that's plastic, it would've degraded within a year anyway & painting it is pointless since it would just crack with any pressure put on it. LOVE the coop & the babies! ❤

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  6 месяцев назад

      Yes that’s a good idea. The majority of rot starts on the cut ends so it’s smart to paint or use wood preservative on them as you go. We used the coated wire, but will have to see how it lasts. The sun is pretty brutal here in Arkansas, but so far it’s doing ok. Thanks for the info. A lot of folks are building their own coops, so your experience helps!😊👍

      So true! We only really wanted 8 or 10, but the minimum order for specialty chicks we wanted was 15!😂😂So far though, it has been worth it. We are currently getting 10 or 11 eggs a day from our 14 hens. Super happy with that since they are still very young and we are in the low light season of the year. They are also very sweet natured birds😊

    • @victorm7274
      @victorm7274 Год назад +2

      @@natureartgirl yeah you are worth it. I have more eggs than I can use for sure. I even have my dog eating boiled eggs. My cat wants no part of it. Oh well I tried.
      Tip: mix grind up egg shells with fermented chicken feed. It’s a way to give the chicken back calcium. They love it.

    That one chick died probably from dehydration from being stuck in shipping for so long. :/
    Might also explain why the others ran to the water.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  3 месяца назад

      Here we get them next day. So they are only in shipping for one day and the post office calls us when they come in so we can get them immediately. But chicks have a way of getting in a pile so sometimes the bottom chick gets squashed. They can even do that in the brooder sometimes when they are really little. It’s always sad. 🥲

    The first thing you should’ve done was build a couple of sawhorses! Then you wouldn’t have to stand on your head to cut the lumber.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Год назад

      So true! Our sawhorses were busy holding up up pile of lumber that we milled. But it definitely would have made the job easier if we had taken the time to build a couple more😂👍👍

  • @cherylstark99
    @cherylstark99 Год назад

    You guys need some saw horses. My back is killing just watching you. We have a sawmill as well. But it is a misnomer when you say the lumber is free. You had to take the trees down, then mill it, and then build . None of which is free. There is cost attached to each thing.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  Год назад

      So true! We did get some of these trees from a local tree service, so it was less work than normal. But it still is a lot of work milling the lumber. We have more time than money though, so it is cost effective for us. We also like being able to make whatever size we need😊

      It’s the only way to get certain types. There are no hatcheries near here. Other than buying from individuals. Even if you hatch them yourself, there can be losses due to them crowding together or other factors. Just facts of life.

      Yes, it is sad to lose one for sure! But this kind of chicks are not available anywhere around here. We wanted to try them because they are supposed to be good layers and friendly. We had chickens years ago and the white leghorns we had were really stupid and did not get along very well. They picked on each other all the time. These girls are super sweet natured and will even let us pick them up and pet them. Great layers too!
