Great video! One thing I’d recommend trying which doesn’t add much time but a lot of impact are the Tamiya accent line panel inks. I have been using your recipe before this video on my alpha legion and other chapters using Tamiya and it is amazing!
I've recently found your videos by watching a video on choosing color schemes and there was a green triad over an elf model and I was impressed by it. Recently got into the hobby and I like watching your videos on painting
I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. I am building up a 30K Alpha Legion and roughly followed your Tamiya ratio and definitely appreciate the advanced color matching advice on the red leathers. I started with painting the Dead Marine on the base of Abaddon (40K) in this color scheme. Helps me not have to use a model I need for my Alpha Legion army.
I finally tested out this scheme on my airbrush. I have a DreadClaw Dropship. One thing I failed to do was mix the Tamiya jar of Green and blue before pouring out. the green tends to have yellow rise to the top of the jar and if it's not mixed up well. Once I correctly mixed it worked great.
@@JasperXoRI’ve been trying to achieve the blue shown in this video but 3:1 blue to green comes out very green for me, 4:1 less so but still green, 5:1 finally looks blue but then loses that green tint, feel like I’m missing something is there a trick in how you mixed the inks?
Watching Vince paint the eyes in ivory and then painting in red but leaving a spot of ivory for the reflection has made me question everything I know... Great vid!
No interest in AL personally, but just wanted to thank you for, well, being your regular self; it's refreshing to see a simple tutorial and someone capable of amazing minis saying it's impractical to do display quality all the time. Some other youtube channels would have you believe everything should be display all the time - fair play to whoever wants that, but I really appreciate how down to earth you are. Sometimes I feel bad for wanting to just do good enough and move on - Death guard has become a grind. Every model has so much going on; rust, pitted metal, trim, pitted trim, wood, leather, cloth, tentacles, teeth, horns, innards.. usually not all of those, but most of them.
Never feel bad about doing a miniature to the level you want to do that miniature to. I struggle with it all the time, especially as much of my work ends up on video/internet. You feel everything has to be your best or people will look down on you. That's been something I try to fight through because this is supposed to be fun. That's how I talk to myself, just remember this is fun and it's a good job if you're happy with the miniature. :)

I just did some guys 90% the same way and paints and they look great, first time air brusher too with a darn cheap airbrush. I’m so happy, they also look 85%+ as good as yours tyty!!
For anyone curious about the choice on Tamiya clears in addition to what Vince covered in this video: GW's display photos for the Alpha Legion on Forge World also used these Tamiya paints. I believe they said it outright in one of the older paint guide/books. Keep in mind this was well before Contrast was in the works. Probably anywhere between 4th-6th edition of 40K...when it was still common to see homebrew and DIY in the crafting part of the master codex. If you choose to work with contrast, you could go with either Akhelian Green, Terradon Turquoise, or some mix of the two.
Wow! Wow! Wow! I like that you used most of all your skill set(spray cans!!). It was a mixed bag of tricks and perfect timing again for me. I am entering my first competition at the LA Warhammer store next month painting an entire combat patrol. This video reinforced what I assumed and gave me some new tricks. Thanks again. So glad you did the classic FW Heresy color scheme. For half a sec, that blacking out of the rims part started to get a little uncomfortable, but you caught yourself. 😂 Great content as always Vince!

Have you ever tried thinning Tamiya paints with alcohol instead of their thinner? Their thinner is not cheap and if I just wanna give a clear a try, that's not ideal.
microset and microsol are so great for getting decals to set perfectly...vince if you haven't yet please do a whole hobby cheating on how to apply decals using these products. If I need advice on how to approach painting problems you're my go to.
Great video! (watched it a few times already before I paint my Alpha Legion). I am going to try a similar scheme but using Pro Acryl transparent paints. I love Pro Acryl but I have never tried the transparent line, hopefully I can achieve a similar look.
Looks pretty amazing - not sure if I missed a step though... is there any shading/washing applied to the armour? Awesome if that effect is possible without the time having to go recess wash.
Nope, no washing or shading. There was a few dark lines I had to trace in a very few places, but for the most part, this didn't need any of that from the way I ap[plied the colors (and the nature of these figures which take to this really well).
Great stuff. I’m trying my darnedest to figure out a way to use contrast paints over silver for alpha legion. This is a good starting point for me thanks.
Having done this a bit with contrast paints, some are more transparent than others and learning which ones are more transparent has been super helpful. Also going back over with a gloss varnish helped preserve the metalic shine.
I've been doing the exact same process for my marines from a Starcraft II Risk set. The tamiya clear paint works so well over the metallics. I tried using vallejo inks first and they just made things too matte.
Hi Vince, thank you for the tutorial! I was planning on doing this for my 40k Alpha Legion but then I would have to go back and paint the trim. Would you still recommend doing it this way for the 40k chaos marines, or priming silver and just painting the panels by hand?
Love AK's 3rd gen black. Used it today and it might top my previous favorite Kimera Black. I go back and forth. What is your favorite black Vince? Based on your choice for this video, could it be AK's black as well?
For gloss red metal armour, which VMCs would you base it with? You mentioned you picked the VMC magnesium partially for the darker aspect and hint of blue, just wondering if you had any suggestions for red instead of blue. Thanks.
Best metals I have ever seen. I will never have an airbrush because my parents think that it has toxic fumes. So until I’m old enough to move out I can’t get one. Is there anyway to achieve results without one. I just feel so limited with all my painting
You could get pretty close with dry brushing the progression with a soft makeup brush. It wouldn't be that smooth, but you could get close and the roughness could have a little texture that brings life as well.
Question: Does the tamiya clear paints require there own brand thinner or can it be thinned with other brand of thinners? Love the channel Vince, really high quality informative tutorials 👌🏻
Contrasts aren't glossy enough on their own to match the Tamiya clears. You would get a metallic blue, but not a candy blue. If you're trying to stay within the gw ecosystem try mixing in some gloss varnish, I think theirs is called 'ard coat? I quite don't remember, but try that.
All of these are fair options, the clears really do have a wonderful perfect gloss and color/effect. That being said, the contrasts with gloss varnish, or Badger Ghost tints could get you there.
Do you only varnish the decals, or the whole model? And if only the decals, are the tamiya paints sturdy enough for gaming use? Also, did you matte varnish the non metall parts by brush or just leave them as they are? Thanks for always making these great tutorials by the way.
I varnished that area fairly roughly with a mix that would simulate the overall finish. Yes, no issue, I generally don't varnish models at all. I did not varnish any other parts, the paint was quite matte, no need. Hope that all helps.
Hey Vince, thank you so much for your videos. I have two questions for you if you've got the time before I start my alpha legion 1. How dark is the VMC magnesium, is it darker than Steel, Lighter than Dark Aluminum or somewhere in between? 2. How much difference do you think the liquid chrome makes? I want to take my time with this army and make it really nice, can I go without it, or is it worth spending the money on. Would the paint from a $10 marker be enough, or would I need the $30 refill bottle for a 2k army? Thank you for all the work you put into your videos for us
1) Its one of the darkest 3, slightly darker than steel. 2) No, you don't have to have it, but make sure you hit it with the silver VMeC to really get that shine.
I am beginning to wonder if either I missed something or I have a very different meaning of "real soon" at 0:43 -- I am still looking forward to it. Still.
Which thinner should you use for tamiya clear blue and clear green? Really good video and looks fairly simple (or is that just Vince making it look easy lol)
Vince. The leather armor strips are called pteruges from ancient greek - πτέρυγες (ptéruges) 'feathers'. First used by the Greeks on their bronze and linen cuirasses and then adopted by the Romans as part of their different styles of armor.
From what I understand they're meant to be some kind of space super cloth or something instead of leather in 30K. I forget the details, though... 🤔

Mostly the same techniques, but just with the matte paints in the zenithal. ANything in this sort of green/blue tone will work.
These came out so cool looking! Honestly, this makes me wonder like...what the equivalent of the Tamiya Clears would be. Thinned down contrasts maybe?
GSW inks jade Green and saphire blue

@@VinceVenturella that helps, thanks a lot.
Hey Vince, thank you so much for your videos.
I have two questions for you if you've got the time before I start my alpha legion
@@VinceVenturella Thank you for your reply Vince, really appreciate it.
I am beginning to wonder if either I missed something or I have a very different meaning of "real soon" at 0:43 -- I am still looking forward to it. Still.
Did Vince ever get around to painting Alpharius? I think he mentioned at some point that it might be on the cards.
I did not yet, something for the future still. :)
Might have been answered but where did you get the white decals? Thanks for another great video! ❤️
They are the Forge World transfers. :)
@@VinceVenturella Thanks! They look perfect for my army 🙏
Which thinner should you use for tamiya clear blue and clear green? Really good video and looks fairly simple (or is that just Vince making it look easy lol)
With Tamiya, I only use the Tamiya X-20A thiner.
