Totally agree: she's amazing!! After 5 years of "lessons" with a local teacher I was still a beginner (sound, technique, etc) 3 lessons in with Joy and I already have the basics of Portato bowing (a world of difference to my sound quality already) and my vibrato is coming!!! She really is an excellent teacher

my daughter started to play violin and piano. she will be 7yo and i was seeking for nice instruments for her and i find one very kind producer of violins in Slovenia called Skaza violins. I like the sound an d the honesty of the maestro. i recommend to test his violins :)

Would it be possible to make a newer video on choosing a violin - maybe showing you going to a violin shop and showing us and playing a number of them and discussing what the sound differences are. If you find an old violin that sounds great but cosmetically isn’t so great, how many people playing in an orchestra will use a somewhat beat up old violin that sounds beautiful? Is that common or unheard of? Or Do they mostly wait for one that is beautiful and sounds great - if that exists within a reasonable price range (5k or less?). Thank you so much!

Dear Btpuppy, I do offer services of helping in choosing a right violin. There are many kinds of beautiful and great tone such as warm yet direct, resonant with round, dark tone, well blending yet easy to play and so on just to name a few. Finding a beautiful violin for each violinist is a bit more detailed, personal and complicated that one might expect as each violinist has a different definition of beautiful sound. I try to avoid promoting specific shops, brand names to be able to stay unbiased. I am sorry for not being able to give you a better reply. However trying different violins yourself would be a good first step which will show you what your preferences are as well as discovering different kinds of tone. I hope you can try. I wish you all the best! warm regards

I had Shar send me a series of violins to try out and I bought a used Carlo Lamberti Master Series because it had such a great voice. I've had it since 2008. Now, however, I've been shopping Ebay for a late 1800's early 1900's Saxony or French violin and researching makers so I don't get a factory "trade fiddle". I'm hoping to score a fine old European violin for around $500 which is very possible.

This was the most helpful video I encountered so far. Thank you so much. I just went to buy a violin with my daughter -- switching from rent to buy. At first, we were happy with what she had, but once we tried other options, we couldn't decide. We ended up borrowing an extra violin. She likes a violin with a warm, round, dark tone, and it seems all they had were bright tones. At first, I liked bright tones because they sounded clearer, but once we got home, it sounded too sharp (hope this makes sense) Can you talk about different tones when we choose a violin? Thank you again!

Dear Paper, You're most welcome and thank you for you kind words. Each instrument certainly has a specific tone colour, but one can also work with right hand bow technique to produce certain tone colours also from choosing specific types of strings. I'll try to make a video about it, but meanwhile here are some videos which might be helpful to you. I wish you and your daughter all the best with the violin searching! ruclips.net/video/TNZ6Y5lDhxs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/XXaOBEZ133s/видео.html ruclips.net/video/uqRYrE-oB0c/видео.html

Joy T_T this is my first video of yours that I'm watching, but listening to your advice makes me wish I had you as my private teacher growing up. Thank you for your advice on this! I am currently struggling to make a decision since the luthier told me i could get 20% off if i also get a case and bow (which i need anyways), otherwise i would be taking my sweet time on this (i can take 2 home to trial it for 1 week only so that is why I am struggling--save money or don't rush)

You're most welcome Tsuki and thanks for you kind words. Finding a right violin can be challenging . in my opinion it is always worth to try many violins without time pressure until you find the one you like and make the playing easy. Happy violin playing!

Hi Joy, Are the violins hanging on the wall mostly for decoration? or are they instruments you often play? I always thought it was safer to keep you fiddles in their cases. Love your videos and positive energy!

For an adult, a full size violin (4/4) is better, but 3/4 size can work too for people with small hands. Happy playing!
