    I watched a 10 minute video on vibrato yesterday from a woman who didn't say a single thing about moving your hand away instead of towards you, and it looks so much easier the way you showed it. You teach everything so well

    Hi joy, thanks so much - after a number of years struggling on my own I watched your clips and have really started to improve. One trick I’d like to share is that if you can practice at night play right next to a wall near the lights - your shadow will show and you can watch to ensure your wrist/arm stays in place and better learn the feel of the movement. Thanks again.

    Very good points there. Being older beginner (still am) on the wrong side of fifty, it has taken me 4 years of patience and perseverance to get some decent vibrato going and its still not there, but at least its huge improvement from when I started.
    I watched many video on vibrato and there two factors which never get mentioned which has been a problem for me. 1: Spasms. It has been very time consuming to learn to control a certain speed of vibrato. At certain number of oscillation and/or at a certain speed, it goes almost into a spasm, where I cannot control the speed, it being either too fast or too slow. Over a long period time this has gotten better, at last. Only time fixes this one. 2: Dry hands. I get very dry hands in cold weather which results in the fingertips being almost like glass, no friction at the fingertips at all. Try doing vibrato with glass fingertips and see how hard vibrato is. I use a little powdered rosin mix on my fingertips to provide some stickiness to get around it.

    Violin vibrato is especially difficult for those of us who have played guitar for many years.
    Our wrists rotate in a different axis across the strings rather than in line with the strings.
    So, it's very difficult to retrain the wrist. It may take at least a year, maybe more.
    Guitarists also press the strings harder than violinists. It's a difficult transition.

    • @deathwarmedup73
      @deathwarmedup73 2 года назад

      i never considered that. i've played electric guitar for 30 years and my vibrato development has been exasperating. it seems to suddenly break through and then i lose it again. i did figure though that you can get away with much less finger pressure and that helps.

    Thanks so much, these are all really good tips that will help me. One issue I have is I already have a bit of a shaky bow arm and when I try to do vibrato the shakiness is even worse since now the violin is shaking as well as my arm, is there anything that can help with that?

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад +1

      It's normal to have shakiness when you are new to vibrato technique as your muscles are new to this unique movement. Once you can vibrate a specific number of oscillations, try to vibrate with narrow and slow oscillations which will reduce the entire movement , therefore less shaky. I hope this helps. Happy violin practising!

    • @zeniktorres4320
      @zeniktorres4320 4 года назад +1

      I had the same problem for a long time. Gradually it will get better as your muscles, tendons and joints will learn to absorb the movement instead of shaking the violin. Just keep trying and over time your subconscious mind will work its wonders on your muscle control and joints. Be patient.

    Your lessons are amazing ! I'm an absolute beginner and self-taught, how can you get your violin to stay there on your neck without falling? Oh my it really feels heavy! I know i still have to learn alot of things but i just wanna know if that's possible after getting used to do vibrato?,, Cause I've noticed when doing vibrato, we tend to shake the violin due to holding it using out thumbs and wrong hand movement,, but does supporting the whole violin on your neck has a role? It's a weird question but I'm curious

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад +1

      All questions are valuable Gupoi. It's normal for beginner violinists to feel the way you do. Just like when we are new to a new sports activity, we feel unstable or not completely in control. With a bit more time, your body will get used to it and better at it. Here are two videos about holding the violin while vibrating. ruclips.net/video/3DZG6r_eeGI/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/zk62cBzIVGY/видео.html

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад +3

      Choosing right vibrato has more to do with the type of music. Music from different eras require different types of vibrato. Here is a video about it. I hope it would give you some ideas. Happy violin playing! ruclips.net/video/DEAgNXZvVxw/видео.html

    Hi Joy, this is Ada, the legally blindcstudent. I'm learning vibrato and because I play by ear, I find that hymns are a good way to practice using vibrato. I have 2 questions. 1. I'm a left hand person, but because I have no vision in my right eye, I bow with right hand and chord or play the strings with my left hand. I'm really having trouble bowing. Any suggestions. 2. How does one become your student? Thank you so much.

    • @JoyLeeViolin
      @JoyLeeViolin  4 года назад +2

      Hi Ada, it's nice to hear from you again :) Here are my answers to your question. 1. If your left eye can see, how about if you try to practice in front of mirror , so that you can use your left eye and check your bow arm? If this doesn't work, one could try to find a way to feel the sound by exploring different angles of the bow arm. 2. Please send me an email to "topiaviolins@gmail.com" for detailed info about taking private lessons via Skype. Thank you Ada and wish you happy violin playing!
