This is a really helpful video. Knowing that the finger going up is the faster motion really helps. I'm going to practice everday and check back in 3 months.
Ex.1. 2:50 Ex.2. 3:42 Ex.3. 3:50 Ex.3. 4:53 Your channel jelp me so much! Thank you ! Your explanations are very clear and i can understand everything.I am learning viola professionally but i have problem with vibrato and this video helped me to overcome it.
Thanks so much for this. I recently came across your videos. Apart from the specific lessons you were teaching, I kept thinking, "This guy's vibrato is really nice! What is he doing?"
An incredible excercise to loosen the fist finger falange, thank you so much!!!! Always have struggled with vibratto and haven't had teachers that explain it very clearly
This is interesting, I don't teach this type of vibrato to beginning violists, is there a reason you start with finger/wrist vibrato? I was always told (and teach) arm vibrato first. Violin students, it's a different story!
I try not to differentiate between different vibratos and notice that different people gravitate towards different vibrato styles. I will make a video about this! Thank you for your comment and I am a fan of yours '
First of all, this video really helped me to develop a proper vibrato. Thank you very much for that! My vibrato tecnique is not really the problem at the moment. My issue is, that due to artritis in my left index finger, that finger is a lot stiffer than the others, which makes it harder to do a proper vibrato with that finger. Do you also have some tips or tricks to tackle that problem?
I think I need a bigger shoulder piece I'm having trouble keeping my violin stationary at my neck. When I try to do vibrato I end up shaking the whole violin lol I also seemed to be having trouble hitting my e chord without hitting the a simultaneously.
Ah... Yes... That is my brandt style raised chinrest... So comfortable and available at my website... Violazone.com... violazone.com/products/frisch-and-denig-chinrest There is a video at the site... It had been a blessing to use this chinrest! Cheers!
Hi Ronald, I seem to be able to do it all apart from the very last part - the vibrato. I feel like it will never come, I just can't understand how you move so fast.

I will recommend that all of my violin and viola students refer to this video to refine their vibrato technique.
That is great!! Thank you
This is one of the clearest explanations of vibrato that I’ve seen. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, Ronald.
I am not a musical instrument player, but I like your exercise on vibrato for viola.

hello professor, this exercise i practice for 3 weeks till now every day, every single exercise for 10 min. i've notice a really improvment.
Man, you really get into your viola. Look at all that rosin dust on the top plate under the strings there. You really play a lot.
You very much remind me of John Lovitz 😂 thank you for your lessons! I needed a reminder to drill these excercises so my vibrato doesnt get weird.
Sounds great... Which John lovitz movie do you like?
@RonaldHouston

I use tonal energy (te tuner). Watch my videos about it!
Do you recommend learning the finger/wrist vibrato in 3rd position before progressing to 1st position?
If it is more comfortable for you
