Hello teacher. The truth is that we violists don't have much material, and having this channel here is a true gem! A luxury ! I am Spanish, and in our literature we do not have much viola material, and it is a shame. Nowadays, thanks to technology, things can be translated and understood better. Thank you very much for that channel and keep going, we violists need you! a big hug And sorry if my English is not very good...

This is truly the gold standard on basic technique. It works just as well for the violin and you can play along with him. His is amazingly clear about what he wants you to do, and provides a lot of common sense advice along the way. His advice on getting the ringing tone (resonance) is just bang on. I admire his tenacity on not giving up completely on vibrato, which giving up has become a kind of cult nowadays.

This is awesome, thank you! I am a college student who has been playing viola since fourth grade. I am not a music major or anything but I love the viola and don't want to give up playing. I really appreciate all of your videos to help me continue improving, especially since I can't afford lessons right now. Thanks again and your work is greatly appreciated!

Yes, as a violinist, I was raised on Sevcik. My teacher, Vera Barstow, used Opus. 3 to teach spiccato. Also. Op. 8 and 9.

@@RonaldHouston My progress is so slow and incremental. I have talked to quite a few string players - they all say, "Yeah. That's how it is in the beggining.."
My fingers are going down in the right places more often, now. I have a long way to go. I will not give up. I will continue to find it - to LET it be easy. One day, I'll play beautiful phrases.
A hurdle for me is that my first and primary instrument is piano. Left and right hand want to sychronize rhythmically - it's been a velocity limiting experience for me on guitar in the past and it is the same on viola. Go figure!! I'll get it, though!!!!

@@RonaldHouston Yes, I agree! French horn is great, piano is it's own world - an illusion creator for sure, trumpet is magnificent and fun, guitar is oh-so-nice...
But viola is the human voice of instruments. The sound. Ah, the sound! Gets right under my skin.

Wow, no ugly constraining shoulder rest, with mostly a Russian bow grip and a concise pure wrist vibrato. Who would have ever thought that would work? What would Heifetz, Elman, and Seidel say about this abomination of methods? Don't let any of the modern violinists about this. What a horror it would be if they ever started to sound like the old Russian greats!
