I don't worry about recalls. I am happy they are doing them. Go back 20 to 30 years ago and most of the things that should have been recalled was stuff you ended up paying for.

@@SPHINX144 the interior materials on the AMG E are in a completely different ballpark of quality compared to Ranch/Platinum/Limited. Yes, they are nice trucks, but they are using low end veneers in very small quantities... the doors have barely anything on them other than plastic. The interior in general is like 90% hard plastic with 10% dressed up trim. The AMG E is loaded with ultra clean carbon fiber and has grossly superior infotainment and seat quality, steering wheel, screens, the list goes on.

Another great video! Thought I would pass my experience with the new F150 Hybrid.
Just returned from a 2000k trip towing a 6000 lb RV trailer to Rapid City, SD in my 1 month old 2021 F150 Lariat. We used the truck to power the RV when boondocking. I can say I am very impressed overall with the amazing electronics but also have a few gripes. 1) my mileage towing has been terrible. Averaging between 5 and 6 mpg at 70mph. I do hope that will get better once the truck is broken in ( you'd think it would be by now). 2) When driving in town (kansas City) I have been really impressed with my mileage, so not all bad. Driving in the mountains was effortless, and my gas mileage was incredible when not towing.
    3) The center console shifter, really is rather "clunky". I have always been a fan, but think it is time for Ford to do away with it. 4) I have not had any annoying squeaks but do agree, the electronic alerts make you feel like you are driving "a nag". Seems like the vehicle is always "harping" at me about something. I understand the need for warnings but they should figure an update to tone that down, once you have been recently warned.
    Keep the videos coming!

My buddy bought this truck yesterday, he took me for a ride and this truck can drive it self. Nothing new these days, but really nice to have. The seats were so comfortable, 110v and 220v outlets in the truck bed, 110v outlets on the dash for the passenger, interesting set up. Its leather inside, chrome package and I think he got it for $58k. We all have so many options these days.

Ford tech here.. my primary concern with these trucks and why I won't own one myself, (yet) is the hybrid drive assembly. It consists of the engine clutch, electric motor and transmission torque converter. It comes all in one unit , and sits between engine and transmission. Ive done a few 40, 50, 60k mile trucks that the clutch failed, which requires replacement of the whole assembly because its non-serviceable. The part alone is $7500, plus the labor is intensive due to having to remove the transmission to replace it. Luckily, ford offers an 8 yr/100k mile warranty on hybrid components, so due to that ford covered each one. But I would be very concerned about needing one of these after warranty period if you do keep the truck for that long. Some people put 100k on a vehicle in a few years. The whole bill parts and labor was just shy of $10k that ford paid, id hate to see a customer pay that much for a freaking clutch.

As a new PB owner I really enjoyed your video! I bought a PB lariat with the 7.2KW generator option. In a week I've found I use the generator almost daily on my farm. I use the 240V outlet with a splitter cord that supplies 6 120V outlets. For my small welder I have a 240V adapter cable. That was one of the big reasons I bought the truck. Yes, I could buy portable generators. The closest equivalent inverter generator is the honda 7000 watt inverter generator which runs about $5k. I have a 15KW pto generator and small 4KW portable. I really love the generator and the rest of the truck too!
Why do I like the generator? 1) I don't have to worry about gas 2) quietest generator there is except for a solar/battery genny 3) efficient; unlike other generators this one does not run constantly unless I am doing something like welding 4) no more lugging generators around or hooking up the generator to my tractor. 5) convenient...I always have power where ever I am with the truck.
An amazing piece of trivia, at least for me. I just sold my original owner 94.5 F350 XLT 5spd RWD CC power stroke ... and the tow rating for that truck was less that the tow rating is for my lariat with the standard tow package.
In a previous life I worked quite a bit with electronic manuals so I don't find them as off putting but do understand.
Noises...yep annoying but moving from my first generation powerstroke to this is like night and day. Have owned hybrids before...braking, weather and speed are all major factors. Again I really enjoyed your video (s) thank you!

You can select regular cruise control by making the change in the settings. Haven't had the radio station random change but when my wife was driving see would hit the tab button on the wheel accidentally changing the station. While I get the gripe about the rust on the unpainted areas under the truck, I do appreciate the care taken in painting the inside of the boxed frame where the cpetitiom doesn't.

This will replace a bullet-proof 2008 Toyota Highlander, and be a trailer tow rig, replacing a problem-free 2006 Sprinter camper-van. Our other car, a two year-old Tesla; has few quirks, and solid build. Now poised to pay the same as the Tesla, for something that comes out of the gate squeaking, leaking, rusting and false-alarming, with glitchy gauges, and useless owner's manual. Finger's crossed.

A useful summary, Tim - thank you. Some gripes will be addressed over time by flashes and OTA fixes. The one BIG issue you overlooked - which you struggled with when finding a Powerboost before 12/31/20 - was the stupendously poor job Ford did with its rollout. This is now disguised by the microchip shortage but remember all the 'built' F150's that were stored awaiting quality follow-ups. Orders going back to Fall are still awaiting production. Windshield, door alignment, some drive train rust issues far beyond yours. And zero communication from Ford.

My friend took delivery of a Powerboost Lariat a couple of weeks ago and we spent the day visiting him and his wife last week.
There was a lot of conversation about the new truck and the special order experience.
Both of them expressed that the truck kinda jerked and did not feel very smooth when starting out and when it shifted between electric and gas power in normal driving the engine starting up and the switch over from the motor was not smoothly executed.
They both expressed hope they would get used to it.
Hollis took me for a drive and everything they had talked about was very evident to the point I wondered if something was wrong with it.
This week I test drove a Powerboost King Ranch and a Platinum 3.5L.
The King Ranch Powerboost operated exactly like my friend's Lariat and the Platinum 3.5L was unbelievably smooth and the engine/transmission operated seamlessly.
Functionally I understand the way the hybrid system works but the low level noises associated with the regenerative braking is also annoying.
I know it is a first generation effort for the F150 hybrid but I was surprised at how unpolished it feels to drive or ride in.
On the plus side Hollis and I sat out in the truck for 30 minutes having conversation and the way the air conditioner works on the Powerboost is impressive.
Temperature was in high 90's and the battery operated the AC keeping the air very cold, once in a while the truck would start itself and run for a couple of minutes and then turn off.
Anyone that normally idles their truck for long periods for the AC would really appreciate this, I do not know if the battery operates the heater or if it is still dependent on hot water flow.

I like the FORD innovation and I think that truck looks pretty good. Although I hate the digital owners manual. If you blow the fuse for the display, for whatever reason, how will you look up the location of the fuse block, especially if there is a hidden one behind a kick panel or something else weird that might not be intuitive and you need to look it up. I know you can use your phone but I go many places that are our of the way and don't have service. I am sure people will give me a 1000 and 1 ways to look it up but in my opinion give me a paper manual any day. Thanks for all the great videos.

To add on to my MPG comment of the ecoboost, one owner in the forums suggested to lock out 10th gear and raise the RPM to about 1700-1800 when cruising 70-75 mph, (depending on the gear ratio). Reason being, the slightly higher RPM increases the horsepower without dipping into the boost. Cruising at 1500 will lug the engine, forcing the turbos to increase the boost. The boost is what kills the MPG. It sounds counter intuitive, especially to those with V8s and other NA engines but it does make sense. I have yet to try it, but my truck is a 2012 steel body with the old 6-speed and 3.73s.

  • @shitloveaduck
    @shitloveaduck 3 года назад +5

Excellent comment on the XLT being a much heavier optioned vehicle than it was before. The safety features alone are great, but with the 302 A package it is a VERY loaded vehicle. Especially once you get into the hybrid and add the moonroof into the package. Better brakes, better frame, better suspension better powertrains, more comfortable, better fuel economy. It’s just not the same anymore, the XL actually compares to a 2005 XLT.
Yeahhh, the recalls are just there. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda the more “reliable” brands all have recalls. It’s what happens. Now if the vehicle is breaking down and stranding you,,,,, then it’s time to get p*ssed off.
I haven’t had any real issues with the varying fuel economy. I drive in a very consistent manner, mind you. I don’t speed, I use cruise control to a fault really, but my driving is really consistent unless I’m going off-road. Then I drive to the conditions. 2 friends drive F150 Hybrid Limiteds, $94,000 Canadian dollars!!! One drives as fast as he feels. He shouldn’t because he is half deaf so the trucks being so quiet as they are now, he drives frighteningly fast sometimes. His fuel economy is all over the place and he complains. We can’t get it through to him that the speeds he drives, a Prius would be hard on gas!! The other friend doesn’t trust cruise control, never has, and his fuel economy is not as good on the highway, but the same in the city. I haven’t had a chance for quite a while to speak with the other few guys that have bought Hybrids this year. I know initially one of the guys that was able to snap up a XL that was dealer ordered as it was still on the transport truck!! Hahaha. He drives a lot like me and was initially doing very similar with the fuel economy. I have not noticed a difference yet in the fuel economy between the XLT hybrid I had before the accident, and the Lariat I have now. I do have a slightly different levelling kit and what I think are better tires in BFG KO2s versus the Cooper ST Maxx I had on before. If anything it is possible the Lariat with more features could be less fuel efficient, but the tires are making up for that.
My biggest complaint lately is that there are a lot of hybrids starting to show up in my area and I often end up in a discussion about the trucks and the conversation goes,,,,,,,” did you try this? How was it? Did you try that?? How was it? And if you know the answers and they don’t, they use you for the manual instead of reading it for the, selves!! Hahaha. I just stay out of the city instead! Haha. I was fueling up today in the small town we live near, and wound up in that discussion at the gas station. Now when they ask, I say nope, not yet, but will try it out soon and play stupid as possible (not that hard for me,,,,,).
I love my truck in Iconic Silver. Would prefer the Blue, but you cannot get that colour with the sport appearance package and I like the 18 inch wheels! I kept them with the lift and they look good with the more aggressive tires. The recalls are not too annoying to me. I haven’t had quite the issue you have with the trailer on behind. When I back up, it’s a bit annoying having to ok the fact a feature is off. They can do better than that. I have t had it freak out when I left it hooked up overnight though. I have had it hooked up to a 18 foot V-nose car trailer and a R-Pod travel trailer. I love the generator feature. The truck is faster than my 2019 Raptor, but not much. I can feel the difference off the line though.
Time will tell if the features stand up well. I’m gonna test the heck out of them this summer. If we come out of lockdown, we have a package waiting out at the off-road area we use to build a very large shop with 3 of the walls being sea containers and a wooden front for the overhead doors to close it in fully. Nice Review, I usually like the sport trim with body color on trucks and I prefer them on the RAM and GM trucks but for some reason I to prefer the chrome on the F-150. Only thing this XLT lacks is 4WD auto both GM and Ram offer that on their mid line trucks. I think it would be especially beneficial on the Ford with so much power and being extremly light on the rear end, would be nice for driving in the rain.

I bought the 2021 Ford F-150 limited hybrid nothing but issues I’m at 8,000 miles I do a lot of driving. The wind noise is a issue with mine as well. My exhaust rattles extremely loud I’ve taken it in to the dealership now 4 times. I have had so many issues with this truck I am actually in the process of a buy back. And I was approved. Shifting issues, AC blowing hot air had to restart it to get it to have the AC blow cold. Im extremely upset. I did watch your videos in the past prior to purchasing this truck and I liked alot of what you had said well now I regret the truck completely.

I have a little over 4,000 miles on my hybrid F150 as well. Do not have any rattling issues, sorry to hear that. The MPG is weird, basically if you hot rod around in it, you get awful fuel economy. Only negative I have is the beeping when its in reverse. Wish I could turn that off and just have the engine kick on every time I put it in reverse. I also had one software glitch that scared the hell out of me. Fortunately it has only happened once. Don't need to go into details, but I almost had to change my pants.

that bit about the truck beeping with trailer issues and maddening, repetitive warnings in simple scenarios is why we need people doing this kind of review on vehicles. To many utubers get a vehicle for a day or two and then make a video. This is good stuff.
Can't wait to see the 300,000 mile review!
Just kidding. I do hope u keep this longer to illustrate the issues that creep in but in this line of work you probably have to switch vehicles more frequently. I think being the guy that does a 6 month, 5000 mile review could be a niche you could own. Buuuut then u could do only 4 a year...Also, maybe the odd fuel economy jumping around comes from using the truck to power electrical equipment?
How does that work? If you run a trailer and/or a saw/welder does that show up in the MPG in the trip computer?

City driving is pretty consistent though... consistently horrible at 14mpg. I wonder how consistent the 5.0 is? It may be lower than what the ecoboost can achieve but I'll be happier knowing its gonna get 20-21 mpg on the highway every time!

Yep, we are in a truck shortage due to the microchip issue.
There was not a Hybrid available within 500 miles of my home but I did get the 3.5 and almost every option.
MSRP was $72,xxx and the dealer added a $3K markup.
Having sold new Fords back at the turn of the millennium, I knew about invoice and holdback.
I managed to get the truck for a fair price below MSRP inspite of strong protests from the dealer.
-My power running boards are very noisy.
-I have improvement suggestions for the front and rear cameras.
-I bought the FX4 package and wish those cameras were mounted lower, perhaps fish eye lenses and would operate in off road modes while moving 5mph.
    - I do not like the power stowing shifter.
    - I do have worries about electronics longevity and durability, I live in humid, coastal Oregon.

The only real issue I have with the 3.5 EcoBoost is the waterpump replacement...maybe it's a little different with the F150, but with the SUV's and cars (Taurus, Explorer, Flex), the waterpump is an expensive piece of preventative maintenance to be done about every 100k miles. That's my concern with the engine/truck lasting 300k or 15 years+. The tech (ECU, TCU, etc) don't bother me.

I have the base model 2021 F150 4WD XL. They skimped on many things, but my old truck engine (2009 fwD F150 XLT 247,000 mi.) blew up in June and it was 120F and almost nothing was available and the dealers wanted top price for the few they had. (Before the 2009 I had a 1997 4WD F140 that had 332,000 miles and still ran like new when i traded it in because they were selling trucks at a good price at the time and offered a decent trade in too - $28,000 - $4,000 i think...I was thinking of trying for a million in that one.)
    Various problems:
The Pirelli Scorpion tires. One just totally broke on a smooth dirt road in an area out of cell phone range. Abruptly went flat. Didn't hit anything, not even a bump. Couldn't see anything wrong. Had a hard time getting the spare on. Couldn't get the pole in for one thing. Bought 4 new Michelin truck tires. The guy at the tire place said the Pirelli Scorpions that came with it were not made 4 a big truck like this, they were car tires. When i called Ford later the guy said people prefer car tires (!) I shld hv brought it back to Ford but i needed to do things and neither Ford dealer in town was answering their phone. I reported it to the NHTSA Complaint #11438697 29Oct2021. I should have saved them, or at least the blown one, to bring to Ford, but I didn't.
I don't have a normal mirror on mine like he does. I have a part concave mirror that is dangerous especially in an emergency as the eye can't quickly adapt to the different perspectives. The 1/4 concave part is useless.
The electronic compass on both the screen and the dash only work on very rare occasions. Ford service said it's a known "software problem" and Ford is working on it and an update will fix it. Baloney a software problem can be fixed overnight. This is already last years model.
It has about 7,500 miles on it now and I have already HAD TO ADD TWO QUARTS OF OIL! It's not dripping oil on the ground. I don't know where the oil is going but it is a brand new engine. To add to the mystery the oil level has stabilized the last couple of weeks and now seems to he holding steady.
The base level infosystem screen is not as nice as his and is unintuitive and obnoxious, same with the online only manual, as he mentioned, and the XL screen lacks many of his features and is smaller. Old sytem buttons and knobs were so much more intuitive and safer as they didn't detract attention from driving. I also have his radio changing stations/modes/suddenly starting problem.
A warning came telling me something is loose in the oil system (!) like a missing oil filler cap, but now that warning is gone. I did remove the oil filler cap to add oil, but that was the day before.
At two points the back up camera went black and it flashed "see dealer". The infoscreen has also gone black a couple of times.
The on off thing is annoying. I need to remember to push the shut off button every time i start it to stop it from doing that.
Mine has had a seat belt recall.
Warning "malfunction indicator lamp regulatory" came on at one point. Now it's gone.
    Small 23 gallon gas tank.

    • @Pickuptrucktalk
      @Pickuptrucktalk  3 года назад +2

I don't think the ride differs that much with the sizes, I think it matters more on the tread of the wheel IMO. I certainly didn't notice any difference between the XLT and Limited for example with different size tires.
No issues with the moonroof and I do like it. Makes the dark gray days seem more sunny with the extra light in the cabin for example during the winter. As the weather gets warmer, I often close the back half and open the glass on the front half. This way I get the warm air inside the cabin without the direct light coming in from behind my head.

2022 F150 Powerboost here, 12k miles on it, bought it brand new. It is constantly in the shop, and when it is they have it for 3 weeks or more because they do not have staff at any of the 5 dealerships near us that can work on them. We have had the plug in the bed corroded and cause ground faults twice, the aux transmission pump went out, the battery has had to be replaced twice, It has had issues with switching from electric to gas causing it to overheat. When it does this it will not shut off for up to 10 min after pressing the button. Sometimes it puts itself into a limp mode where it has barely any power, supposedly so it can get you to safety and shut it off. Ford has refused to buy it back. Currently it is in the shop waiting on an aux transmission pump and has been for almost 6 weeks. They cant support it, wont buy it back. When we took it in this time even before they kknew what the problem was they told us it was going to be there for awhile. This truck is a POS. If you are thinking about purchasing one, run away fast!

My friend who works in the infotainment sector said that Ford historically went with the minimum recommended specs on the hardware to save on money, and then kept on pushing the hardware to the absolute limits with unrealistic expectations. I used to have to disconnect the battery on my 2008 Focus about once a month.
