Kei truck owner in Japan here. As usual this info is spot on. There are millions of these trucks in Japan. A great many get used commercially in delivery roles and do high mileage but a huge number are owned by people who only use them Sunday to carry a dirtbike, or who drive 1km to drop off farm produce, or are elderly and take meticulous care of their truck but seldom drive. I have many friends who drive the low mileage cited here. Not unusual at all.

Me too... the shaken-sho never lies. Back and forth to the field once a day, and to the market maybe twice a week.
There's good high-mileage ones out there too, taken care of the Suzukis especially will go a loooong time before they break.
      Cheers.

I go to Japan fairly regularly and have always been struck at how rare older vehicle are. You just don't see 10, 15, 20 year old vehicle. I always wondered what happened to them, guessed they were either scraped or exported. Thanks for answering that. I have also never seen a single vehicle with any body damage.

That’s a nice informative video And I really would love to purchase one of these mini trucks! But so far nobody has done a video of the true cost of importing one of these trucks! Yes the dealer shows the CIF or the FOB when it leaves Japan That’s only the beginning for paying once it arrives you have to deal with customs which is an automatic 20% import tariff on trucks versus 2.5% for used cars of the total purchase cost of your vehicle! So if you paid $2000 for the vehicle excluding everything else you automatically have to pay a additional $500 for customs! Then you have a terminal fee where they charge you for driving your vehicle off the ship to the lot usually $130! Then you have to pay your “customs broker” that handles all the paperwork because you’re not allowed on Federal terminal property without a security pass! ( customs broker ) When you add it Up figure on another thousand dollars on top of whatever you paid for buying and shipping for the Truck! I would like to see a video of the total and true cost and Procedures for importing and purchasing and imported one of these fine little trucks! Thanks Dan-o

I've always seen that once 5 digit odometers have rolled over, the new numbers will no longer be completely level, they become jagged.

The only thing I would add is that kilometerage on a kei truck can easily mean very little. What really matters is who has been driving it, and for what purpose? For example (btw: I live in the sticks of Japan) the guy across the street/river from me died, so his widow carried on with the planting and harvesting of rice, and gardening. The only problem is that she didn't know how to drive a stick, so wherever she went was in first gear with the rev limiter going nuts. She only drove half a kilometer from her house to her garden plot. When she got back home, she would spend about five minutes trying to back it up into her driveway, riding the clutch and revving the hell out of the engine. She did this probably three times a day during spring and summer.
In other words, very low mileage, but it paid for every kilometer traveled.

Hey guys, thank you very much for your information. All of these trucks are used commercially in Japan, they have no other purpose. If one of them is used to deliver fish around the greater Tokyo area it would then have more mileage. If another were used on a rice farm, it would have low mileage. It doesn’t correlate to the way we drive or what we do with vehicles in North America. The Japanese are innately fastidious about maintaining everything, most of the trucks that make their way to North America are in remarkably good shape. I was one of the first importers of these trucks into the US many years ago after having spent time in Japan. Buy one, you’re gonna love it

Appreciate your video! We have a qualified opinion and you are being straight up with your information. We only import 1990 to 1995 units so we have to be even more careful when purchasing. Agreed, there are rollover trucks that could make their way into the country, but a little common sense goes a long way! We've been fooled before and probably had ten out of 1,500 trucks show up with five digit odometers and are rollover trucks. It's obvious when you see one. They look, sound and feel like they have over 100k kilometers on them.

I own a 2002 suzuki mini truck I purchased it from Alaska Mini Truck with 9000 km on it. It still smelled new. it was 14,500 price to my driveway.
that included the lift, and the atv tires rims.
    why did i get it.
    choices for my needs.
    my need:
I have a home I am buiiding in Seldovia alaska. I had the need to transport building materials up a hill so steep, that a ford-f250 with good tires would have been challenged.
I also wanted basic transportation. I also wanted my spouse to be comfortable in it.
I looked at the polaris ranger, as I had driven one in the villiage for 3 years. while its hill climbing and handling on the gravel local logging roads was great, I bought the mini truck for the following reasons:
I hauled an entire home, including the main beams, and trusses up my 1000' hill on the back of the mini truck. ( 40,000 lb so far)
I exprimented and limited myself to 1200 lbs on average, my max was 1800lb up the wet muddy hill in the rain.
The sides fold down, enabling 24' beams to straddle diagonally the bed, yes driving down the road was enabled by kind understanding locals.
The polaris cab always filled with dust and noise making comfortable conversation less than ideal.
Power brakes, Power steering, windshield wipers, doors, no dust, quiet, great heater and air conditioner..blinkers too.....
I can go anywhere a ranger will go not to include deep rutted, side hill or swamp.
The gearing is lower than a polaris, in low, very easy to creep up a wet hill.
I love the polaris ranger, it has a great place, especially in rural alaska.
If recreation had been a part of the recipe of my needs, i might have weighted the polaris higher, except there is no way i could have transported all the plysheet, and beams i hauled with the mini truck.
My wife loves it, the quiet, the warmth.
Had I known more of the pluses before purchase, it would have been an easier decision.
The known, the polaris, the unknown, the mini truck.
I absolutely positively am not slamming the ranger, or other utv. they are great products.
I hope i have helped with my input to help swing someone on the fence to either go the utv route or mini truck route.
    that is all.
    in our town specifically....
polaris, exceeded at: fun, speed, cornering handling, off-road, hose out after use.
mini truck: comfort, hill climbing, load, long load, quiet.
    more added later:
mine came with a speed restrictor on it, as I suspect d.o.t has issue with front crash impact standards. I removed the speed restrictor, on gravel, it feels fast enough at 35-40, on atv knobby radial tires.
I can not get it registered to drive on alaska state maintained highways, i think that there are states that will allow that. it is possible to get a " friend " to purchase yours, register it in his state, get a registration, then transfer it to your state to get a registration.
I could not register mine at the alaska dmv, i did register/title it as an atv, the 7 year snowmachine/utv sticker. Geico didn't give me hassle on insuring it.
the local trooper, who ignores the 20 year old unregistered vehicles on the road, most of which are often driven by guys leaving the local bar at 1 am sunday, only asked that it be insured.
so mine is insured, with and atv sticker, not a license plate.
I also recommend getting the fuel injected option if possible, mine starts up instantly after a 6 month winter sit.

Even if they were, rolled over, i mean, it wouldn't be that much of an issue to swap various things and redo the engine. It's such a small package that say over a period of 2 years, you could slowly change everything on them to spec. Small, simple, easy to work on. If there's a vehicle type that follows the K.I.S.S. philosophy to a T, it has to be the Japanese mini truck.

I would be more concerned about corrosion than mileage especially with trucks used in coastal areas. Low mileage doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't subjected to severe service or salty sea air. Do you have someone in Japan that pre-inspects the vehicles you bid on? Or do you buy based on the auction site photos only? Kei trucks are cool for sure but I personally would love the next size up such as a Toyota Town Ace with a diesel and duallies!

    • @4sonsoffroad
      @4sonsoffroad  5 лет назад +2

Depends on the situation but we do avoid certain auction houses for that reason. Most auction house inspections are detailed right down to the smallest scratch so major rust or corrosion is almost always listed. If for some reason we are unsure or not satisfied with the auction inspection then yes we book a personal inspection before bidding.
