    Two things this video prompted me to say;
    1) people swoon over how good Nicholson, Pachino and Washington are, but they’ve no comparative range the way Phillip had. They’ve had good roles in certain movies to be sure, but they’re essentially just playing versions of themselves in everything they do. Phillip was a true chameleon, he disappeared into his character’s and gave them all such distinct personalities….he didn’t do phone-ins, he did performances.
    2) Jessie Plemmons is the continuation of Phillips magic.

    • @andrewh7370
      @andrewh7370 Месяц назад +2

      Excellent observation. I think your most accurate juxtaposition is Pacino. It’s very difficult to find a role in which he extends his range like Philip could. Washington, perhaps, reaches his parameters in Fences (2016), which explores the experience of one black family living in the era of segregation and the unfolding of the civil rights movement. His character, Troy, struggles with intergenerational trauma, bitterness, and the inherent trickle down effect of parents messing up their children, which results in those children subsequently messing up their children, and so on. Washington effectively portrays a flawed, weak individual, who eventually loses everything he fought over. I’d say this, in general, is a departure from the “normal” version of himself that you’ve referred to above. As for Nicholson, aside from a few naturally raunchy and inappropriate rom-coms, I’d argue that his range meets its maxim in About Schmidt (2002). Described by Roger Ebert as “essentially a portrait of a man without qualities, baffled by the emotions and needs of others. That Jack Nicholson makes this man so watchable is a tribute not only to his craft, but to his legend: Jack is so unlike Schmidt that his performance generates a certain awe.” Nicholson’s character, a widower named Warren, confronts the disinteresting meaning of life and the grim reality that he’ll soon be forgotten. Cathartic tears in the final scene represent a complete withdrawal from Nicholson’s normality.
      RIP Philip - The Chameleon

    3:32 this. this right here is why he's the best. The way he delivers this line is not very theatrical. It's not sexy. It's raw. It comes out as an outburst, which is what it is. I feel like most actors would have committed to hard to the line itself rather than "let it slip" like the way Philip did here.
