I made the decision to quit 2 days ago after 10 years of drinking regularly and lot of times getting in trouble and risking my life. I’m doing this for myself and my wife too! Wish me luck!

Hello everyone I’m glad I found the site very informative. I retired in 2022 and had a lot of time on my hands to sit around and do some drinking. I should’ve kept working. It got so bad that my daughter noticed my decline very quickly. She showed me a picture of myself one year prior and then showed me a current picture and it was drastic. I had to immediately go look in the mirror because I thought I still looked cool, because I looked 10 years older in one year and some change. I called recovery centers of America. Even my address went upstairs, took a shower, pack my bags and went away for 30 days. It was a great decision. It lasted for about nine months. I’m not as bad as I was before but I see I still got a lot of time on my hands so I have to make some changes. My start date is going to be March 8, 2024.

Last time I got drunk I was sick in the street like a total scumbag, did endless shots with fake pub friends, woke up on a friends sofa (unsure how I got there) and had a 3 day hang over in which I thought I had alcohol poisoning. When I caught up with my daughter who I hadn't seen in a week, all I wanted to do was sleep it off. I haven't touched a drop since 5th April (longest stint since teenage - not even a mid week top up. Nothing). Got rid of all the booze in the house. I'm done. Since then I have so much more energy and I'm a better person. More focused and a better dad.

Did detox in 2017 was drinking at least 6 beers and 3 shots of vodka a night. Now slowly been drinking more and more from a couple to 5 a day. So last Monday I deiced to taper it off and try to quit again. Yesterday I started to get sick and nauseas, hope that goes away soon and pull through this.

Super helpful video! I have been a light drinker all my life and don't abuse alcohol. But if you're a problem drinker you need to quit or cut it down. The lower your weekly consumption of alcohol, the lower your lifetime risk of an alcohol related illness. If you're a heavy drinker, stopping suddenly or reducing your alcohol use too quickly, can lead to severe health complications, including seizures and even death. Consult your GP or a local alcohol counsellor before you try quitting. Thanks for the valuable and very useful information Doctor O'Donovan!🙌❤👍

If you are a light drinker you should consider eliminating it altogether. Do you REALLY get that much enjoyment from drinking a poison? Is there REALLY any benefit?
Then why do it at all. I can ingest poison in small doses and it won't hurt me, but it surely isn't good for me.

Quick question (hopefully) - I want to cut down on alcohol for my overall health. I have one glass of wine each night (according to bottle, it is actually 2 standard drinks). It's my way of relaxing and winding down after a really hard day. I'm a mum to 3 kids, the eldest with special needs, and my days are incredibly stressful and exhausting. There is no off switch for me and no one else to take over the care needs of my eldest while I have a break. I can't even take one day off as some of what my eldest needs can't be done by anyone else, and needs doing several times a day. There is nothing else I know to do in place of that glass of wine to help me relax and unwind once the kids are finally in bed. I watch a show, have a glass of wine and try and switch off from daily stressors. What can I replace it with? I need one small thing that I can look forward to at the end of each day when I'm so exhausted that I don’t know how to get through another day. I know a glass of wine isn't a healthy way for me to have a few moments of down time, but I honestly don’t know what I would replace it with that has the same effect and is achievable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Canabis. .. it's the only non physicaly addiction that is easy to pick up and put it down again......I find ...I slipped into a glass of scotch after stopping canabis for 6mnths at Xmas .... with the scotch ..I've gone from 1 glass .to a pint a night ..since Xmas ..I'm going back to weed ..it helps me sleep...not addictive ..will soon be legal across the board...but ..it's horses for courses ...and lesser evils ..if it is 1 glass of wine....you don't really have an addiction.....if ...it's 1 glass ..how big. ?..... I don't see a problem in a glass of wine I wish I had your fortitude.....my son has aspergers...is doing 3 A levels. . hoping for an A A B .to access his modern languages degree....I go through every lesson with him at the close of day ..he's my motivation....to draw that fierce intelligence out of a boy i understand fundamentally helps me ...I feel for you.... blessings ❤

My late mom signed my brother up for drug and alcohol therapy for a whole week.
My brother came back, he became more dependent on alcohol and hard drugs.
My dad told me to leave my brother and I did in 2007, these days I heard he’s still dependent on alcohol, but he’s married and he’s unemployed since after 2005.

Often residential detox isn't for everyone...it didn't work for me...as a teen..it simply highlighted my levels of addiction...it whispers your problems in the ear.......I'm now on maintainance methadone...plus tranquillisers for alchahol....I'm 50 and it's a lifetime journey now ...... sometimes therapy for the young can be the wrong attack .sadly ...some people will just shift to chaotic .. realising the level of the problem isn't as bad as everyone else...they ape the doses they hear touted..quite frightening levels of use...Ive been there its tough.... addiction sucks ... especially around our young......sadly

I have a serious flu last Friday, I would like to quit the the alcohol at the same time. Haven’t touch any alcohol since last Friday. I have all the withdrawal symptoms, I don’t know is because of the virus or the alcohol dependence? But isn’t matter. How many days I can be cleared? Also how long or how much maximum I can consume ( on social events) thanks a lot

I am quitting today. The reason I am quitting is because I can no longer control my intake. I tried cutting down and once I start drinking, I always want more. I can NOT limit my intake. Last time I said if I can not control my intake, then I need to quit. I can’t control it, so I need to entirely quit. I turn into an idiotic monster when I drink over my limit.

All the talking in the world 🌎 seems to do nothing. Reading books, watching videos, even praying to God. I don't want it to take a tragedy for me to slow down. It's one of the hardest things to do when you enjoy it and want to slow down but need to stop... Addictions ain't nothing but the devil controlling you.
