  • I recently purchased an 03 Ford Expedition with the 5.4 2v V8 engine. I am showing how to make a free performance intake as a specific addition to the Free horsepower intake video done years ago. This one is for Ford 5.4, 4.6 V8 engines in the F150 250 350, E series Van, Expedition, Excursion, and the same intake believe it or not is in some of the Ford 4.6 mustangs too. This video is from my Mad Boosting Channel and I decided to post it on here too since I do not have many subscribers to Mad Boosting yet. Please Subscribe to MAD BOOSTING, share, like, and check out all my new videos there.

I tried the air box mod, with one from a junk yard. It did nothing. I put the OEM one back on. The cool air, is drawn in from behind the fender, not the hot engine compartment. Over 100 degrees MAF air temp, timing is retarded and power is reduced, to prevent detonation.

I'd like to clarify something here. The smallest diameter passage in the air intake system on these 5.4's is in fact where the intake hose connects to the fender. Removing that bottle neck will in fact increase your engines ability to breathe and subsequently increase torque, not horsepower, as there will be less air restriction acting upon the physical leverage applied to the crankshaft from the pistons. However, the increase is minute unless you are accustomed to pulling a decent load on a trailer (more that 2,000lbs.) Also, when cruising under minimal acceleration your fuel mileage will decrease and changes in air pressure will cause your engine to run more rich during cruising which will over time cause more carbon to build on valves and piston tops increasing predetonation.
I ave tried this and many shortcut mods on my 02 Expedition XLT 5.4 and the gains are never worth the trade offs.
There is no shortcut to performance. Either put in the effort in research, money and wrench time in for performance gains or leave it alone.
If you want a quick a noticeable increase in performance without shortening your engine's life, save up for a 400$ tuner. Put a tune on it and leave it alone. You'll get up to 25hp/40ftlbs torque gains if that's all you do. Get rid of the factory mufflers and put a 40$ turbo muffler on it to let it breathe a little better but dont bypass your catalytic converters. They are most of what is keeping your heads clean. If you want real gains you're looking at heads, cam, pistons, rods and intake/injectors.

Do not do this! See the hose leading towards the engine? That is 3” in diameter. The inlet for the air cleaner only needs to be THAT size, by cutting away the air filter protection all you have done here is exposed that filter to rain and puddles. Do the gotts mod and that’s it.

  • @rodsatheart

Removing the engine cover does nothing for under hood temps, and removing the insulation will actually increase temps due to the hot hood. I would try trimming just the top of the filter housing, and leave the bottom as a heat shield. Maybe even trim the top back more. Yes it is getting hotter air than using the factory tube, but the volume is greater, even through a factory filter so there will be a small gain. The trick is getting maximum air flow while still staying with in the parameters of the Maf and factory tune.

Yes actually it does help to pull that big huge piece of plastic off the top of your engine that gets severely heat soaked and hotter than Hades if you think that doesn't hold more heat into the engine and engine bay you're silly that's like telling me if you added another one on top of it or another one on top of it that it wouldn't get any hotter really now you have three huge hunks of plastic that sucking a ton of heat and get hot as hell to the touch alone try taking it off your car on a hot summer day after driving they're pretty damn hot aren't they set it down on the sidewalk and feel it in about 20 minutes if there isn't a breeze blowing to cool it off it's still going to be pretty damn hot plastic retains heat quite well open your hood on a nice hot day after driving and feel how damn hot that air is how much of it hits you in your face reach your hands out there and run over the top of that big plastic cover and feel everything good then take it off and go drive around for a while then open up your hood and tell me there isn't a difference bud I could tell the difference on my old Subaru years ago and it only had a 12-in x 12 in little plastic cover on top of the motor my ml55 AMG has about a 2 ft wide by 2 ft long hunk of plastic on top of the engine and that sucker gets hot very I have three of those SUVs at the present moment and all three of them have that thing off and hanging in one of my storages also took the insulation out from under the hood of those particular SUVs same thing noticeable difference and I don't know this my hood being any hotter cuz after maybe 15 minutes of driving with the insulation under the hood the insulation gets hot as hell and so does the hood now I have a big old piece of heat soaked blanket 5 in above my engine stopping all the hot air that's under there from dissipating and going anywhere my hoods are cooler to the touch in the summer after driving when you open the hood up and all that hot air and Funk and smell hit you it's half of what it was with that big piece of plastic on top of the engine and that big old blanket right above it those things aren't exactly made out of a space-aged material you know they're not reentering Earth's atmosphere trying to keep heat out when they build automobiles they're just building cars and the reason for that crap being on the underside of your hood is so your hood doesn't get so hot from your idling engines engine stuck in traffic and just some cars run way hotter than others and the tolerance and space between the engine and hood are different than others it's there to protect your paint actually. You saying removing that cover makes no difference is like telling me the intercooler sitting on top of a WRX engine doesn't get heat soaked and is way more efficient than it being down in the front bumper catching cold air

Also the purpose of the slight restriction on the intake is you have a high pressure going to a slightly lower pressure which makes air cooler and denser being able to pack more Air into a smaller space. Engineers designed it that way for a reason.

Engineers work with limited resources to make hp and maintain emissions while at the same time the bean counters say you got $12 to work with for design and parts. When end users decide to modify stuff they are looking at hp and power and economy not emissions or trying to save 12 cents on each part. Yeah the engineers may be smarter but they are always working with their hands tied and not allowed to do the smart stuff only the crap they are allowed to do. this is the reason divisions like SVT can make massive improvements all around because they have a wider room to work with. the cars are limited production so the emission requirements are less strict and they can apply more expensive parts to the problem because the list price is higher etc.. A smart engineer designing a dumb set up is still producing crap it is just that he knows it. doesnt change the fact that it is a crappy set up.

Great idea, the maf will sense the hot air and retard the timing to help with detonation. The inlet whole is small grower to large to make the air move at a higher velocity and make it denser which means colder and carrying more O2. You literally made your car more vulnerable to dirt and dust in order to decrease overall performance and hp, get lower mileage and probably detonation if your maf isn't working perfectly.

Someone didn't pay attention in physics class lol. That bottleneck is what creates velocity, pulling air from the fender is what keeps it cool. Unless you're adding cams, doing head work or stroking the engine, in which all cases would require more fuel, your intake has more than enough air. Leave the box alone and add a free flowing filter, done. Half the people that do this mod, put it back, the other half feel the placebo effect.
Also, any gains would come in HP at the top of the rev range where you never drive at the cost of low end torque, if you're not running lean. Same with throttle bodies or carbs. Smaller inlet creates more down low torque increasing velocity. Larger inlet adds hp and takes away from torque, pending you are within applicable timing/ fuel tables.
Think of a SC, all it does is force air induction at higher velocities, right? All this only works if the air being pulled in can be pushed out at a higher rate, which is another whole conversation.
At the end of the day it's your vehicle and if it makes you happy, then that's all that matters.

The heat shield on the hood doesn't hold heat in that much the purpose is so the paint doesn't get baked off of the hood because of the heat. And also does sound deadening. Best bet would be to get a cheap hood scoop or mount two electric fans on each side of the motor to blow air down out of the engine compartment.

100+ degree air, causes the ECU to reduce power, to prevent detonation. That is what being sucked it, under the hood. The engine temp is not changed, by removing the shield. That protects. Ignition coils and plugs, from water. The under hood cover is for sound deadening, not heat.

With out the intake tube it will not pull that cooler air. You say its a restriction but the MAF see the air flow coming into the system and optimizes the fuel ratio. What you just did has been proven to cost hp throughout the rpm range. You are better off leaving it alone. On any engine with 250 hp or less if you replace the stock box which pulls cold air out of the fender well with a simple so call cold air intake which pulls hot air from under the hood you will lose hp every single time. Cold air intakes are foolish at best. I seen people come into the dyno shop saying they got 400hp from all the mods they bolted on, only to find out they down 20 hp from stock.... gimmicks. You can gain hp from exhuast and a tune if you have a chassis dyno to back it up, otherwise you're just waisting you money. The by replacing the stock 05 4.6 f 150 very restricted muffler with a more open muffler you can see some gains, but with a hot air intake those will be erased. Do what you want I don't care. Gotts mod made very little performance gains and possible poorer fuel economy do to cpu sensing all the cool air plus higher amount of oxygen coming in basically throws ya a dang code when you mess with stock flow air supply .these engines need more air flow and easier exhaust flow but you can only go so far my advice would be to cut the reducer nozzle off replace with large enough pipe to fit in fender and filter tube then remove the silencer that's in the 90 degree bend with the raised lines on it however at idle the iac will fluctuate and you will get a rumble vacuum cleaner noise only hear at idle every once and awhile .DIY tip is to replace reducer nozzle with a dollar tree thick plastic like batman cup I'm serious lol fit perfect for me and then paint or not either way worked great and super cheap had it on for 6 months no issues and is firmly in place and heat has not affect the plastic

An engineer's goal is different than a consumer's goal. Engineer works for the manufacturer and designs everything for solely the manufacturer's interests. Manufacturer wants engineers to design vehicles to be practically maintenance free for the warranty period. Pushing and improving the performance envelope does not comply with this agenda. More performance is more potential wear and stress to vehicle therefore engineers design to reduce performance. Designing a restricted flow airbox is one of the easiest ways to reduce performance.

No not every aftermarket performance mod does actually do anything but most of the time it helps like a better intake and exhaust for performance at the cost of comfort and sound if you are a person that hates your cars and always run them on 87 octane to empty gas tank then fill them up by 20 dollars and not up to full line.

You realize that the "blanket" under the bonnet has a purpose right? It's not a heat blanket, the reason it is held on with plastic push pins, is so in the event of a fire in your engine bay, the pins melt and the blanket falls on top of the engine. It's designed to smother out the fire, even though it doesn't always work.

And when it comes to mass-produced vehicles, they're definitely not considering people taking things to another level. There's a reason why tuners and other mods exist for cars and trucks on the road. And I've seen it plenty of times when you take away OEM parts and replace them with aftermarket. You can gain fuel mileage as well as performance enhancements easily. To sit here and say that the manufacturer built something perfect and everyone will appreciate it is beyond ignorant. You can always make things better by tuning and changing things around. That's why you have super cars and hyper cars...

@@ndane2 I at first was going to follow what he did, but I did not want to cut factory parts, I looked on ebay and for just at $30.00 (tax included) I got a cold air intake and it came with a reusable filter.. I also gave it a toon up, new plugs wires, I already do oil changes every 3 months or 3,000 miles, I started using a fuel clean additive when I fill my tank, I use higher grade fuel, that itself already gave me better gas millage (if I use cheap fuel my MPG goes way down) after doing the cold air intake with using the fuel clean additive I average 12 MPG more that is combined city & highway.. Where I live and the driving I do, I drive about the same amount of miles city driving as I do highway.. To give a better comparison, my Truck is a 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4l 4WD.. My neighbor has a 2015 Ford Expedition 5.41 4WD, We both dive about the same distances, he uses the cheap gas, does not change his oil very often.. He spends like $100.00 more on fuel a month then I do.. I hope this answers your question.. The main point (lesson to be learned) is the better you maintain your vehicle, the more reliable it will be.. Now for the other things this guy did in the video, I did not do.. Another good tip is to keep your engine and engine bay clean.. I make sure bolts, nut's & belts are all tight, I check for leaks I power wash the engine an engine bay about once to twice a month. Keeping it clean you will be able to notice problems visually easier and I believe, that in itself improves the performance.. I also have my transmission fluid & filter changed every year, I do mine in the spring right around time change...

@@TheWolfster001 Sorry, but the only way you can gain an extra 12mpg out of a 5.4 is have a Prius push you from the rear while going downhill. A cold air intake and new spark plugs combined with premium fuel and "special additives" aint gonna get you there. For my business Ive owned over a dozen F250s with both 2V and 3V 5.4s and the most efficient of them could barely average in the teens for mpg. We tried many tricks over the years to boost fuel milage, and raising tire pressure is the best way to get any gains and that gives a 2 or 3mpg boost. Please do more research before posting a mod like this. Engine bay temps, even out as far as the fenders are intense. The radiator fan moves a lot of air and pushes it out in all directions, especially now where a low pressure is created. This is so bad for performance. Didn’t you learn from all the rice burners doing a pop filter mod like this??
Also, think about the size of your throttle body intake diameter. Going much larger than this is not needed as there is your ultimate bottle neck. The trumpet mistake size, that you made fun of, was designed big enough for what this engine needs. The OEM design also protects better from dust and water. But hey, you got some views and that is the only thing that matters, right?
Your first mod should have been a K&N filter to allow a bit better airflow. Beyond that is the more serious stuff.

With the hood shut and driving, hot air will never rise and trap "hot air" under your hood it will get sucked out from the bottom while you driving lol. As for the intake system that ford engineers built is all common sense. That bottle neck you're saying is not a bottle neck, the maf sensor id is about the same size and does not need to be bigger for the power that these trucks make.. hood blanket? Helps protect your hood from paint fade! Especially if you are idling for too long.. you made your truck worst case If you feel any difference it's just placebo Effects

    B. You destroyed your breather which I would never do. The on board computer is programmed to sense the air in and out and you just altered that so will probably have a check engine light on and will probably run lean now.
    C. You talk about "IMPROVED GAS MILEAGE" but yet you put a dirty clogged air filter back in. How does that improve gas mileage?
