    While the original inlet tube was a restriction, it was truly a "cold air intake" from the factory. You have now removed the restriction, but have changed it to a "hot air intake" as it is now pulling air from the hot engine compartment. I left my air cleaner assembly as is, but removed the small inlet portion, and replaced it with larger diameter PVC pipe.

  • @CrisAnderson27
    @CrisAnderson27 2 года назад +7

    Did this to mine 6 tanks ago. Had previously done something similar to the Gotts mod (removed the intake silencer through the fender well). My truck is an 03 Supercrew, 6" lift, 35's, removed fenderwells. Exhaust is a set of Pacesetter longtubes with the offroad Y-pipe, into a single 3" exhaust dumping through a flowmaster in the stock location. I'm running a 5 Star SCT and the Economy 87 tune. The Gotts mod got me .5gal to 1gal average improvement four years ago with that setup. This got me a solid 1.8mpg average improvement over that. Truck is more responsive and seems to pull harder in general. Torque is definitely up, as is towing mpg (nothing serious, a few loads of hay...mowers, etc). Even an empty trailer used to KILL my mpg with this beast (truck weighs 6200lbs). I'd lose 3mpg from the gate.
    Free/effective is a win/win in my book. These guys saying you shouldn't do it are probably the same ones who told me not to put longtubes on my truck or I'd blow all my torque out the exhaust, lol. I say do it.
    Future mods may include a pair of cams if I find something off the shelf I like. Who knows? Large and unrestrictive intake and exhaust tracts with proper cam events builds far more torque than a restrictive intake/exhaust tract ever will.

      You can simply monitor your IAT sensor values. I Performed this on my truck and my IAT at idle remains is in the 60-80 deg. That's while my truck is 180-190 Deg operating temp. and IAT drops more when I'm at freeway speeds due to increased airflow from exposure. Breathing in 5 to 6 Grams per second at idle. PS METAL TUBING GETS HOT🔥TRY PVC.

    Just fyi... The filter being freed up gives it better air intake. But the "cold intake" comes from the intake connection between the throttle and the air filter. That's where most of the heat is lost. So essentially you just made a mass air intake system. Or a warm air intake as previously stated.

    I totally agree that the snorkel on that thing is a big restriction and removing it will allow more air flow. I think it would be better to find a way to plumb the air intake back to the hole in the fender with a larger tube for heat issues. To me opening the front up on your aid box allows more air sure but you can't control where the air is coming from. How do you know your not sucking in hot air from behind the shield vs from the front? you would have to have positive pressure coming in from the front of the filter.
    Any way nice job you didn't hack it up and your seeing some improvement in mpg so its working just wonder if it could be better?

The k&n kit has a heat shield that limits air to the corner of the engine comparment. A k&n increases flow. This "trick" may also increase flow. But, you aren't getting cold air with a soft plastic intake tube. Start the truck and run it, and the plastic tube heats up with the engine, heating the air flowing through it. Aluminum tube, mesh filter, run from the bumper area is the way for cold air. Heat "KILLS"... Cooler condensed molecules of air assists in creating effective horsepower. A better improved exhaust flow (i.e. larger exhaust system) will scavenge heat away from the engine. Therefore having a matching cold air intake to a proper exhaust system will give you some measured horsepower and engine longevity.

    Does everyone still like this mod who has done it? Is your computer accommodating the increase of air even if it is hot air?

    • @jakewright6386
      @jakewright6386 5 лет назад +2

      Your computer can more than compensate without any issuse. With this modification you should get as much air flow as a cold air kandn setup with one more added benifit. It is securely mounted in the engine bay. My kandn cold air has a cheap generic bracket that always seams to vibrate loose and causes the filter to sit to close to the inner finder and rubs a hole in my $75 filter. Also i have had issuse with the mass air flow mount leaking air and causing a lean code or mass air performance code. If you spend the extra money and eleminate the factory elbow (silencer) this is trully a cheap bomb proof efficiency up grade. I am going to go to the junk yard and do this to my 99 and scrap my over priced problem kandn cold air intake.

    • @jakewright6386
      @jakewright6386 5 лет назад +3

      Another benifit is you can still run paper filters and sont have to worrie about over/under oiling your kandn. If you over oil it will coat the mass air sensor and trip a c.e.l. and under oiling will alow dirt to inter the engine. Well done look forward to more from you.

    Please people do not do this. This makes your vehicle suck in hot air from the engine. The only time a cold air intake actually works is when it is away from the engine. Sure your vehicle is sucking in more air. But it's hot air, which kills your MPG and makes your truck run like shit. If you're gonna do this, spend the money and do it the right way. You'll fuck your vehicle up by doing this.

      Kinda funny...20 people have said they did it with actual positive results...then you come in and say "NO DON'T DO IT, YOU"LL SCREW EVERYTHING UP!!!"
      I did this a couple months ago, before I found this video. I did it similarly as well, blocking air from the back of the engine compartment. Net result after 6 tanks is more torque, more power, and an average 1.8mpg improvement...and that's coming from winter into spring (35°F days to near 80°F days). I also calculate my mileage by resetting/recording my trip odometer and dividing by gallons of fuel at fill up. So it's not based on some cheesy computer calculation.
      Oh, my truck is lifted 6", with 35's. I also have pacesetter longtubes with the pacesetter Y pipe, no cats, and a single 3" exhaust dumping through a flowmaster.
      So I'm guessing unless you've done it and screwed YOUR truck up...you should stop claiming others will when people who have done it state outright that it helps.

    NO that is not a cold air intake you are drawing hot air from under that hood as soon as the fan sucks air in through that radiator it is HOT that hot air is blowing and circulating all around that engine when truck is running if you were to pipe it infront of radiator then you have a cold air intake. That engine is hot and it is drawing in hot air as well

    • @MrPancho728
      @MrPancho728 3 года назад

      Your engine will still get hot that is what the thermostat is for depending witch one. There is 2 different kind one opens at 190 and the other that opens at 210. If you live in cold weather states you would want to have the 210 and if you live in the south (Texas) you want 190 so it will stay cooler

    • @MrPancho728
      @MrPancho728 3 года назад

      I never said it will over heat that was just a answer to the question of what if you live in colder place 210 is good and your normal thermostat but in the south where it gets hot 100 degree temperature you would want the thermostat to open at 190 to keep truck cooler but it ok to run a truck with 210 degrees thermostat
