Congratulations for verifying what I've been saying since "cold air intakes" hit the market.....they suck in hot engine compartment air, which is less dense, and contains less oxygen as a result, making less power. The factory air duct system actually brings in cooler air from in front of the radiator (typically) and REMOVING that fresh air system for something that draws in air from the hot engine compartment is ridiculous, from a power making standpoint. The 1 mpg increase seems real and is interesting though. So glad you were able to recover from your injuries. Please stay away from motorcycles. The old timers saying is "There's 2 kinds of motorcycle riders; those who have laid a bike down, and those who are going to lay a bike down." Stay safe.

Your running a open box so of course it is pulling engine heat in. To see a difference you need a closed system pulling air from somewhere besides the engine bay

The cowl (where your AC gets outside air) is a great place as it's cool, safe from rain or snow and gives you a bunch of extra room in the engine bar by removing the giant factory airbox

That’s not the authors fault, it’s more K&N’s fault for false advertising of a “cold air” intake.. when it really isn’t.

the box isnt open once the hood is closed. the rubber strip you put around the housing becomes a seal when the hood is closed so that open compartment is now cold air completely seperate from engine bay heat

I recently installed an S&B CAI on my car for just over $300. It definitely breaths easier than stock, and works better than I was anticipating. It won't give you a huge increase in horsepower on its own, but it's still noticeable. And the exhaust is noticeably louder when accelerating over 3k rpms. I'd recommend it, as it's a fun and easy performance mod.

Let's see...K&N Cold air intake from Amazon $274.00. MPG savings 1 mile/gallon...so 25 miles on my full tank, which gets 15m/gallon at we'll say 3.00/gal...So fuel costs me .20/mile, so I save 120/yr..so the K&N pays for itself in roughly 2.5 yrs...hrm. Shortly after that and the full exhaust, I purchased a Diablosport Trinity and had DiabLew make me a custom tune. It ran so much better once the custom tune was installed! These are more like ram intakes compared to a real CAI. The one I had on my car dropped down in front of the front driver tire. It would collect all of the cold air flowing beneath the car! If you ever notice when you're driving around in the winter time when the air cold your vehicle always tends to run better because it actually has cold air going into the engine!

By definition alone it's not a "cold air" intake. The stock system actually pulls air from the "outside" through the fender. The K&N full systems as well as others like it just pull hot air from inside the engine bay. The only advantage they have is the additional amount of air they can pull from the surface area of the cone filter and possibly the routing of the air to the intake to reduce flutter or turbulence. In my opinion, these systems are only efficient or effective with the addition of upgraded turbos and full exhaust systems. As a stand alone they are a poor placement of your hard earned money and offer little performance improvement. That said, they do look cool.

It's not really a CAI: the engine bay is not properly sealed. For that reason the inlet temperature is higher than with the standard intake, that was sealed to the side of the carbody

I just installed my Rough Country CAI, yesterday. Missing a key attachment point for a sensor. I jury rigged it by cutting out that connection from the stock system.. Grinding the diameter down to fit, and 2 part epoxy took care of it. I hate when Mail order QC takes a fat dump on the parts I order.

Is there some kind of duct brining in fresh air from outside? Because if not, it’s just sucking the hot air from the engine bay. Technically that’s not a cold air intake, it’s a short ram air intake.

    • @JohnWargo93

I am thinking of installing a short ram in my acura TL purely for throttle response. The Dbw sucks. It is also easier to clean and replace the ram filter. I drive 90 percent highway so my intake temperature may be more stable.

I think if I tuned the truck properly to take in consideration cooler and more direct air, and more airflow out the exhaust it would correct the issue and yield better fuel mileage. Same thing with HP gains. From my understanding you definitely gain some with bolting it on, however a tune will gain you the best increases! Adjusting the CPU for the cooler and easier air flows. Hope that makes sense!

Typically you do a bit.. just because you’re letting your truck exhale a lot faster and with more volume. My set up after exhaust I lost only about 1mpg average so nothing too bad. Truck ran a lot better but sacrificed a little fuel.

Get smart, fab an aluminum filter box get a cai for it and have external tubes from aluminum box pulling fresh air from somewhere other than the engine bay, results steady colder air better mpg. Depending on certain motors, throttle body spacers can even help with a little mpg and throttle response. I have a 1998 2500 dually with the 350 vortec 4l80e combo , 3:73 gears on 35s and it gets 17-18 mpg on average

  • @ageorgeson393
    @ageorgeson393 2 года назад +1

John, no you haven't covered everything. You didn't cover the fact that you need to adjust your settings of your ECU (Engine Control Unit) a mini computer. As all modern vehicles have them, they do as it suggests, manages your engine. As the cars are tuned with all the stock fittings. If you put after-market gear on your car and not adjust/tune your cars ECU to accommodate the changes, then of course your car will not operate as expected. Temps will still be high as your putting a performance enhancing part into a stock environment, although you did cover temps as such, but don't you think you need some form of 'outside-the-engine bay' air? Then you'll get the 'cold-air' for your intake. Otherwise, an informative video.

  • @GenX_US_Marine

Nope, I hate cold air intake systems. My Hinda had one and it ran like complete crap. My gas mileage suffered and it didn't run right at all. I put back in my OE air intake system and my car runs, sounds and feels better. My gas mileage went back up. That stupid cold air intake filter kept falling off on mine and it drove me insane. I took it off and just stepped on it uninstalled the stuff and threw it away.
