As a blind listener I am happy his reading is measured and with a good Cadense. Poe is my favorite author for his mind is how I feel about life. We all are in a world of chaos and cannot escape until we die. Literature is our only balm in human life.

The Raven is phenomenal, and of this selection the Telltale Heart is my favorite. My very favorite Poe story, however, has to be Shortness of Breath. Absolutely hysterical story.

I find it pretty stupid that people say stuff like
"They should have chosen someone else to do this recording"
When, in fact, Librivox gives EVERYONE
the chance to try and submit their recordings.
You can find more than enough people with recordings of Poe's, Lovecraft's or whatever you want with a simple, ridiculously easy search in Librivox.
What, too lazy to go to another site?
One that is practically /made/ for Public Domain audiobooks?
Bottom line, if you don't like this
    1. Don't listen to it
    and
    2. Go to Librivox to find one you may enjoy.
That's all there is to it.

To. Ryan: an educational note: E. A. Poe was an American, ergo, from America; born in the US of A, attended West Point, which is located in America. You have heard of that country, correct? How in Amontillado's good name do you think reader should have English accent? And to which English accent do you refer?

@@jillfanning749 ** I know this is an ancient comment but just wanted to add (Tho' I know Poe claimed to dislike allegory it seems pretty obvious TCOA is one. About a man who turns the table on life itself by chaining it within the wall of a catacomb. Fortunato (fortune, guilty of perpetuating a countless ills) is unwittingly taken, while dressed as a jester, led into the deepest bowels of the earth where he is suddenly chained to a wall (after being stupefied by wine, and being led on by the promise of a particularly sublime Amontialldo). The bricks represent the months and years of one's life, one laid on top of the other, until the last one is placed and the world simply moves on as if you never were, your bones alone in the dark for all time. The secrets of your life buried with you.

I'm enjoying this. Yes, the narrator does sort of sound like the joker, but be fair, the joker would give this tale the darkness it deserves. i believe the narrator made a great effort to give us a dark tale. he succeeded.

A good long while ago, I listened to an LP at my local library of Poe's tales, enacted by Vincent Price, The Cask of Amontillado being one of the stories, and do feel Price's voice is an acquired taste, that recording was, even today, at the very top of the list.

I see more comments bitching about people criticizing this narrator than I see comments that ARE critical of him. A few people said he sounds like The Joker (I wouldn’t call that criticism personally just an observation) and many many comments saying they love his voice and he did a great job. What made you post this in the first place? I saw two or three other comments similar to this, chastising people for complaining about free content or telling them to read it themselves. Just curious why since I can’t locate many genuine criticisms

With the thousands + of Poe fans, no one has come forward to continue the decades of ritual and deserved respect of leaving brandy and roses at the Master's Tomb. For myself, I live many thousands of miles away but surely there are several within reasonable distance to demonstrate the annual pilgrimage of honor. BTW: Amontillado remains available for those devotees so inclined. Quite delicious, may I add.

I heard a record many years ago in the public library, long before there were ever words such as Internet or personal computer or wifi, and it was a recording of EAP's tales performed by Vincent Price and others, and while I don't recall the other stories, I do remember one: The Cask Of Amontillado. With the headphones (great big things, no piddly little earbuds those, to allow the sound to wash over the listener) on, it was an incredible experience. Still the best version of the tale I've ever heard. Thanks for your uploads.
