- On October 31st, 1999, Egypt Air Flight 990 is heading out over the Atlantic Ocean to Cairo. Dinner is being served, when suddenly, the plane begins plunging toward the water. Minutes later, all 217 people on board are dead.
Can you work out how this disaster happened?
From Season 3 Episode 8 "Death And Denial": There was no distress signal, no obvious sign of malfunction. Did a bomb bring the plane down? Is there a mechanical fault with one of the most popular airliners in the world? As pieces of the plane are pulled from the ocean, the mystery deepens.
Investigators pore over the wreckage. Tiny rivets in the plane that help control the elevators were broken before the crash. Egypt Air insists this was the cause of the tragedy, but the National Transportation Safety Board pushes further.

Yes! Al Batouti pushed forward on the yoke! Put the plane in an unrecoverable dive. This was no malfunction. The Egyptian Authorities are still lying about this!
I think this guy was really disturbed. He changed the controls while mumbling something 11 times. No evidence for malfunctions of any kind. The only malfunction was the disturbed pilot

This is your propaganda. Are you a relative or something. Seriously.
@Dimitra Georgiadi you're the propaganda. What do you gain on this propaganda?
It was 100% intentional. It’s no coincidence that only moments after he’s left alone the plane starts wildly diving. There’s no explanation for why he was pushing down and continued to do so even after the captain told him to pull up. There no explanation for his unresponsiveness to the captain either. It also makes sense as to why he was so insistent to swap out early, he wanted to crash the plane asap. There’s just far too much evidence he did it on purpose and it’s outrageous Egypt tried to cover it up especially when the elevator malfunction wouldn’t lead to a crash.
He could've had a medical problem. The man was OLD.
@@CajunA79idk what medical problem would cause him to continue to push the plane down the whole time. You actively have to use the yoke to push the plane down it doesn’t just happen by accident. This is literally how the investigation of Egypt Air 990 concluded:

Dude 💯. I mean, what madness!!!
I was given three months notice I was losing my job. But I continued doing my job. But my responsibilities did not include flying an airplane. That is what is ridiculous about this scenario.
Its quite obvious he crashed the plane on purpose!!! No failure!!! Done on purpose!!!
Thankfully, we now have aviation rules where no "one" pilot is in control of a plane here in North America. I believe that this is now a consistent avaiation rule worldwide. If a co-pilot, or pilot needs to use the washroom, it is my understanding that the first flight officer/head flight crew member would be in the cockpit while either is away for a bathroom break.
My sincere condolences to the families. Crushing.
I think all airlines do this, especially in the wake of other instances of a sole pilot being in the cockpit and crashing the plane, including the now infamous Germanwings 9525 flight.
I actually saw them do this on a flight I was on recently flying out to go diving. I was sitting close to the front and the first officer came out of the cockpit and was replaced by the purser (head flight attendant) until he returned.
I do hope this is true, but, I'm reminded on the recent, purpossful downing of German Wings flight from Barcelona to Berlin. The pilot was alone in the cockpit and flew the plane into the side of a mountain in France not long after take off. I think there may be times when only one person is in the cokcpit and at the controls. I hate that thought.
I heard in today's news that some major airlines are considering reducing flight crews and relying more on automation and remote control.
Yes, that is correct. When I was a flight attendant, we would have to wait in the cockpit for the pilot to return.
North America has been doing this for awhile, probably since 9/11, Europe has adopted it since the German wings incident. And hopefully China gets on board after their recent disaster of the same nature.
No mystery, he crashed it.
But the Egyptian authority say otherwise.
@@johna.4334 Aiii....is just like silkair 185. No one can fucking agree and both side is too bias to agree on

All technical evidence in this and Silkair showed that it MUST have been the pilot(s). People of special interest groups always say "no one like us could have done this". there is also no honor in killing several hundred people for no reason
It's hard to admit that your close relative was a mass murderer.
If indeed it WAS mechanical failure, isn't it odd that the failure happened as soon as the guy was alone in the cockpit? Hmmm...
It's crystal clear that el Batouty crashed it on purpose: his job was hanging by a thread because of his inapropiate behaviour and he couldn't pass the First Officer rank despite being almost 60 years old. Not only that, but his behaviour made things even clearer: the most obvious sign is that he made the young first officer to leave the cockpit earlier. Then, he waited for the Captian to go to the toilet and then he turned off the engines and made a mess with the controls.
And the icing on the cake is that he didn't seem shocked by how uncontrollable the aircraft was or by the situation. He never answered anything to the captian, just kept flying, clearly, to death.
You dont have to be an aviation expert to realize that this was no accident by mechanical or design failure. It was on purpose.
Never tell a pilot
"it is your last flight'
I studied Flight 990 for over 18 years and I have been flying for 38 years with over 26900 hours of flight time. I found out just by using Common Sense in this case coupled with the background of the Co-Pilot it appears to me He more likely than not was unstable mentally. I know this Aircraft inside and out. It appears his career was soon to be ended before his retirement and he held a secret life that got out by complaints. He could appear normal in all cases and pass a Medical Evaluation of any type, but his reported actions bring to life he had some sort of mental problem with his always wanting strange women to go with him. Put yourself in his shoes at the time when he felt his actions were going to be exposed when he got back to Egypt. It has nothing to do with Religion at all but his disgrace that was coming made him to only think about what people were going to do and what would possibly happen to him when he got back home. In simple words he wasn't going to be charged with any crime but only Shamed by his actions and he had a big ego. He was not going to let his good name be ruined. That was a normal flight with an un-normal Pilot behind the Controls. He was not worried about anyone else but himself and going out as a Hero Pilot. His actions leading up to the incident were not normal at all. In my years of flying, I had two Co-Pilots removed from the flight deck and one was restrained due to being in my opinion unstable. One got off the Plane had 18 years of Flight Service and a family and was never heard from again ever. No one ever found him or his Cessna 182RG he got in and flew off with. Both of my actions were sustained by investigation. Both of those Pilots were unstable and could have been dangerous or deadly to my Flight. Both had hidden secrets that un-nerved me. I respect the people of Egypt and their beliefs, but I do not respect any foul play on the Flight Deck. My unbiased opinion on this one and may all the Souls on board rest in Peace in Heaven.
Right on....🟥🦖🟥
That’s incredible good job 👍
I think what was highly disrespectful, was the Egyptian authorities trying to cover up for Batouty and discredit the findings of a highly respected agency like the NTSB. Unfortunately it's a cultural thing, rather than a religious one, for people from this part of the world where I live, as well as West Asia to fight and never lose face even if they are wrong. The chief pilot should have waited till they got back to Egypt before relieving him of his duties because ego runs high in that part of the world and it only takes a very short te for someone to take such a drastic step.

@@dickfitswell3437 right?! In fact, a lot of people who commit suicide do things like that -- they'll buy stuff for people, give valuable possessions away, etc. -- it's like they're settling up because they know they're about to end their life.
Very unfortunate
Condolences to friends and family of the departed souls
Reuploads like this do make it difficult to keep track of what I have seen and what I haven't. Though I suppose I do appreciate that they are uploaded at all.
i have a playlist of all the different mayday videos on my channel, check it out and tell me about any ones i missed lol
@@scratchthatfnaf Nice job, thanks! I've saved the playlist
It is against the law to have only one person in the cockpit if someone goes to the bathroom someone else has to Sit in until that pilot comes back you never have just one person in the cockpit
It's like that French plane that was crashed by the first officer while the captain stepped away.
I'm amazed the 2 people in cockpit rule wasn't introduced earlier.
Egypt authorities trying to cover up what actually happened, so sad and sickening.
That pilot waited for a chance to purposely crash that plane. He chanted the phrase 11 times never answering the captain., He took it off cruise control and that is when the plane started to dive.He got disgraced by losing his job because he was sexually harassing women and stalking them. How many people do you know that get accused by strangers of sexual harassment more then once and by different women. The Egyptian government is deplorable for protecting this sexual predator. He was held accountable before it was something that Egypt would be disgraced by so they covered it up. That informant sounded credible and sincere and feared for his life because of the person that they were trying to cover up.
Very dreadful situation to be in 🤦🏾♂
This story is worthy of a Hollywood movie if not the tragic fare of people on board
I was thinking that also! Start with the crash and make it mysterious then investigations + hearings and Egypt outrage
It would make for a good movie if done right. The same for the Fed Ex flight, except the perp there would have to be made white, instead of black, since it wouldn't be politically correct!
The Egyptian investigation team's unprofessional attitude is a slap in the victims families face. Furthermore, it's a betrayal of their own military considering the passengers included their servicemen. Egypt Air should not have let a lame duck pilot be a part or the crew and should have flown him back to Cairo.
It had to be a pilot error. That idiotic relief 1st officer left all alone decides to sabotage the flight. Credit to the captain for fighting the zero gravity to reach the cockpit and to put up a valiant effort.
when you are a leader you don't cry but fight how to find a way... world is a place of little joy and a lot of challenges...
The captain should have called the other first officer or other captain to the cockpit, forceably remove the crazy pilot, had him cuffed and under arrest if there was an air marshall or a law enforcement officer...This is providing the flight crew can undo that psycho pilot and save the plane and 250 other lives
Remember that there was severe gravity going on! People could hardly move from their chairs, it was said that pilot reaching the cockpit was a serious feat
High G forces caused by the plane diving and climbing made it almost impossible for anyone to leave their seats.
Your turn off the engines and the auto pilot and then pull the plane down it’s obvious he wanted to die
For whatever reason El Batuti crashed that plane. Everything happens immediately after he is left alone in the cockpit.
I hope noone faces this 😢😢😭😭😭 i feel heartfelt & scared so much everytime i go by flight,I use night sleeping tablet sometimes i pull side person’s hair or hand.
As an experienced pilot myself, this one is obvious. If there is a mechanical, the crew verbalizes the symptoms, calls for checklists, etc. this F/O did none of that. An idiotic religious culture is at the root of this tragedy.
the relief pilot was too old to be flying a plane....he caused it to dive and tear apart
No mechanical failure, "competent" pilot at the helm. Can't help but think this wasn't an accident.
I found it very strange that the commentators to this video nor other investigators even once mentioned anything about the fact that the pilot who come back to the cockpit exclaimed once or twice in the black box recording that the engines were shut down. This would obviously have been an important item of investigation and required a plausible answer to those defending or accusing the pilot in question. There must be a explanation as to why the commentator did not comment on that exclamation by the returning pilot but I personally don't get it.
They were throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick. I remember when this happened. I remember just hearing it in just the sound of his voice that it was on purpose. A doctor I worked for was supposed to be on this flight
The real question to ask here is why are Egyptians not people of integrity!
the actor who played first officer Adel Anwar is handsome
I saw a slithering snake as he entered the cockpit...the younger co pilot should have stood his ground and refuse that snake trying to boot him out of his rightful position as co-pilot...lesson here is...never give this kind of news to a person until his last day.
No coverup.
60 year old man took the controls BECAUSE he intended to fly the plane into the ground.
Absolute monster.
What did that cop pilot get out of doing that ? Killing all those people, WHAT ???That cop pilot was mentally unstable. The families will never get over this wrong that was done to their loved ones. My sincerest condolences to those families who were made to suffer because of that cop pilots illogical actions.😨😧😩😬😠😠😡
Why are you calling him a cop?
@@MB.543 I think they meant co-pilot and it was by far not his fault. I sort of blame the Captain, not the man "CAPTAIN".... he was clearly mentally unstable. The first 2 in the cockpit were doing just fine. It was the other pilot called "Captain" who had serious mental issues if jot schizophrenia.
@@MB.543 lol, maybe because he had authority due to his senior rank.
waterbird91;
It’s called “co-pilot”. Not cop pilot.
Are there any Egyptians watching this? What's your opinion now, 20+ years since it happened?
as an Egyptian, I think and believe that AL-Batuti is the one who intentionally crashed the plane BUT I also think that the reasons mentioned above is not enough I think there is more to know about that person.
Read Nowayfagbughazaleh comment right above yours to answer your question.
I live how the nephew said it shows its a cover up!! Are you serious yeah covering up how your uncle murdered all those innocent people cuz his feeling were hurt
I felt so sorry for the man who killed himself.
I was SO angry at the pilot who murdered his passengers and crew.✈
He’s a murderous pos I feel nothing but disgust. Suicidal or not. other people with suicidal ideation, you know, just want to end ourselves. Not HUNDREDS of innocent ppl
It's so long ago but i still remember that crash very well. I didn't knew that the 767-300 ER has a seperate navigation display.😂
