He even didn't take his one hour of recreation inside the ADX Florence supermax prison for several years because he didn't allow to let the officers to see his body because of the procedure of the strip search in which he has to strip down his body completely! 0:21 the first time I traveled by plane I was 4 since then my family and I traveled very frequently and every single time since I can remember I always would look down my seat searching for a bomb. My family and friends laugh at me but this is the prove that the tradition I decided to follow 20 years ago was the right one. Imagine if this man just like me decided to inspect his seat before the plane was on air? Also doesn’t hurt to make sure that your safety jacket is there and not missing for some reason.
That doorman is a hero. Thank goodness he is someone who sees something, says something. The way the FBI agent, Frank Pellegrino, grins while speaking of such horrific events is just bizarre. And those pilots' skill in landing a plane without steering control is just incredible, and shows the high level of competence. Who'd have thought of using the tilt of the plane to steer? Just so well-done!
I wanted to add the same thing about the FBI agent. Why would you grin when talking about horrific events? It's good to be proud of yourself for catching an important bit of information that helped the investigation (the Casio watch thingy) - but it's bizarre to maintain the grin throughout the whole interview
Here's the reason why the amount of liquids brought on carry-ons are limited. Crazy this happened a quarter of a century ago but we're still dealing with the consequences!

Back in 1979 i was flying from heathrow to aldergrove belfast. Before i was allowed to board the plane my luggage was searched, they took my cleansing lotion from me which was less than 100ml. Also we didn't take off because there was more luggage than passengers. So we all had to disembark and pick out our luggage, the 3 suitcases left over when then taken away checked and blown up. Which proved to be explosive. Because of the security of the staff we survived. Shame they weren't so vigorous back in 1994.
Kudos to the pilots and the crew! Thanks for bringing the passengers safely home. Also to the joint efforts of the Japanese, Philippines, American and Pakistan Goverment for the capture of a very dangerous man. Prayers for the souls of his victims
@@tamara2102 Bombs detonating on board are usually very bad. Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie. Air India 182 off the coast of Ireland. And while it wasn't a terrorist bomb, there was an explosion on board, TWA 800 over the Atlantic. All of these planes had a bomb explode in flight and all of them crashed soon after. So, the fact that they managed to land it is quite impressive. Yes someone died, but that is better than everyone dying.
@@tamara2102 Yes it would have. But at least the casualty count was low. It could have been worse. So, yes it is a tragedy someone died, it was a miracle that was it. They landed the plane though, it didn't get torn into pieces.

A few years ago I was on board a THAI 747 getting ready to fly from Athens to Bangkok. It was 4 PM and after the air hostess have closed the door the plane wouldn't move for almost an hour, then all of a sudden the captain announced that we were all to disembark the aircraft and go back to the terminal. Everybody was frustrated and had initially thought the aircraft had some sort of technical issues and followed suit (the captain never mentioned technical issue as he made his announcement on the PA) But we began to sense that something was wrong as flight crews hastened each passenger to leave the plane quickly like they were in a rush to empty the plane. Inside the terminal we were all gathered in one lounge and watched in disbelief as airport authority towed the plane with a pushback truck away from the terminal building followed by several firetrucks with water hoses pointed at the aircraft. This is when we realised that this was not a technical issue with the aircraft. We were stuck in the terminal building for 6 hours with rumours spreading around that an "extra luggage" had made its way onto the aircraft cargo hold without the passenger boarding. Then at 10:00 pm they brought a bus and drove us to the stricken 747, the bus drove further and further from the main airport area so much so that I thought we were going outside the airport!?! Then finally they let us out onto a remote tarmac right on the edge of the airfield. Luggages were strewn about everywhere on the ground, they told each of us to go out one by one and identify our luggages and show our boarding pass to authorities then reboard the plane. This went on for another hour or two as each checked luggage is reloaded back onto the plane. Then we finally took off never to be told whether they've actually found the luggage that the terrorist have planted or not. The flight that was supposed to land in the early morning ended up in Bangkok in late afternoon. No apology or compensation was ever made and the incident never made it to any media outlet. This was by far the worst flight experience in my life but I'm also glad we didnt fall victim to the terrorist's plot.
This actually makes me SLIGHTLY less annoyed with the TSA-I get the shoes and liquids thing now. And I’m not offended by body scanners, they’ll get no thrills from me. I get it’s all part of the bigger picture. But I wish they wouldn’t hire temp employees. Having done that, retail, etc, I wasn’t super committed to excellence. Pay them better and hire the best! Like he said, there’s always another terrorist perfecting their craft.
The problem was that Philippine spec aircraft had the seats in a certain configuration, that would have made his plan successful. However this exact aircraft was ordered by, spec’d for, and delivered to, Scandinavian, which when it got bought by PAL, didn’t line up with the others. His research into seat assignment was figuring on a PAL spec aircraft, only if he had known which exact aircraft would be flying the route, and extrapolated the modified seating arrangement accordingly, and booked 28K or back, would he have been completely successful. Yeah well he didn’t, so he wasn’t.
They don't check the airplane between flights? On school busses they have to go through bus after pickup and dropping off. I'm surprised to learn it's not required on a plane or did they just fail to do this? They'd have seen the device taped underneath the seat if they had.

16:15 The fact that the Japanese traffic airlines didn't understand and they had to bring an American to communicate is UNACCEPTABLE and UNPROFESSIONAL.I mean Wtf, they NEED to be fluent in English!
A very good account of this is found in the book “A Thousand Years for Revenge”, by Peter Lance. He gives a tremendous account of the hunt for Ramzi Yousef, a chemical engineer by trade, and the evil genius behind the first World Trade Center attacks. Yousef is the reason we could not carry liquids on planes for so long. He miscalculated by just a few feet where the fuel tank was under the seat he targeted on this flight. Great job by the pilots to save the flight, sadness and prayers for the man who lost his life.
You know, the strange thing is, it's almost easier to do this today in some ways. I mean, cellular devices if you can make modifications subtle enough, and considering the lithium batteries, basically are begging to be used for this.

So this could be one reason why we are not supposed to transfer seats without requesting any crew member.
I think it’s cuz if something were to happen they would check seat number to passenger for identification

The aircraft was not used in passenger service after the incident. The plane returned to service as a cargo airliner. The incident was a test run for Operation Bojinka, which was uncovered by the American government in early 1995. The operation was the precursor to the 9/11 attacks, which was the deadliest terrorist attack in American history.

Ramsey Yousef was incarcerated in the most secure unit inside the USP Florence ADMAX in Colorado called Range 13 in which he was incarcerated under the so-called non human contact restriction. He even didn't take his one hour of recreation inside the ADX Florence supermax prison for several years because he didn't allow to let the officers to see his body because of the procedure of the strip search in which he has to strip down his body completely! During this time he was visited by the chaplain - an orthodox priest during this particular time - and he (Ramsey Yousef) asked if he could get a Bible to read it and to study it and because of his studies of the Bible he has renounced Islam and converted to Christianity and he even eats pork and is taking his recreation times since this time! Sure, the BOP and the Justice Department do not believe in his actions of becoming a believer in Christianity and they are thinking that this was only a trick to get more freedoms inside the ADX Florence supermax prison, but he has since then left the Range 13 unit and is now in one of the General Population Units and can be together in the recreation yard with a small group of other inmates to talk with while he has his one hour of recreation inside a slightly bigger cage as his own cell in the Gen-pop Unit there! He even can talk with Theodore John Kaczynski and many other inmates there! That's the information about him I have! Greetings from Captain Sarah Sutter (Boeing 747-400F/Boeing 747-8F)

My family and friends laugh at me but this is the prove that the tradition I decided to follow 20 years ago was the right one.

Back in 1979 i was flying from heathrow to aldergrove belfast. Before i was allowed to board the plane my luggage was searched, they took my cleansing lotion from me which was less than 100ml. Also we didn't take off because there was more luggage than passengers. So we all had to disembark and pick out our luggage, the 3 suitcases left over when then taken away checked and blown up. Which proved to be explosive. Because of the security of the staff we survived. Shame they weren't so vigorous back in 1994.

Wow, remarkable flying. A bomb exploded on board and only one person died? That is quite impressive. I also love the clear friendship the crew has.

Al Quran recitation in this video. There is no connection between Islam and the terrorist.
Oh my. Prayers to that man’s family. How awful.

You’d think the bomber would be smart enough to know to not pick the very front seat of where the tank is if the point is to blow it up
The problem was that Philippine spec aircraft had the seats in a certain configuration, that would have made his plan successful.
Chemical engineers will know
It was a different type of 747 than he expected
@A Volpe gooooood question. If he were perfectly intelligent, he wouldn’t have gotten caught.
It's nothing to do with a "cause", you've got to be pretty cold blooded to be able to calmly place a bomb in a seat and scurry off and not look back.
last words _ those who forgot the past, are destined to revisit it
They don't check the airplane between flights? On school busses they have to go through bus after pickup and dropping off. I'm surprised to learn it's not required on a plane or did they just fail to do this? They'd have seen the device taped underneath the seat if they had.
Exactly my thoughts...
I guess they didn't check under the seats. They probably do now.
It was inside a life vest pouch where they couldn't see.
This was 18 years ago; think about how many changes in how busses are run and checked have happened in that time
