My husband and I auditioned for a production in the summer of 2007, but we didn't get parts. At auditions, when this scene was being read, the guy who auditioned for the Captain (and ended up getting the part; he's been dead for about two or three years now) actually shouted "Whistle!" every time the script called for him to blow his whistle.
This also reminds me of the time I saw the "Rodgers & Hammerstein: The Sound of American Musicals" documentary, and the late Theodore Bikel told a story about when they were rehearsing for the original production when a Navy man and a Marine were called to observe his whistle-blowing, and when it was over, they approached him and said, "Sir, you're holding it wrong and you're blowing it wrong, but you're making the right noises."
This is the best play of the sound of music ever it makes me happy when Maria married the captain in this play
