The Shock Valerie Bertinelli said in her book that Eddie got offended when DLR refused to be a groomsman at their wedding. Eddie never got over that, according to Valerie.
He's stupid and socially awkward. That's why he drinks and tries to exude a "bad ass party-guy" persona which is totally phoney and he can't pull off. He's a goof who can play the guitar well
As brilliant a guitarist as he is, he said he still gets extremely nervous before shows, to the point of almost vomiting. His dad Jan was a musician and a drinker and smoker. He probably didn't know any better, and gave Eddie a cigarette and a beer when he was a kid, to help him relax before playing to calm his nerves. Eddie, at heart, is shy. Sadly, it became his way of coping with media and the rocker lifestyle. In most earlier interviews and concerts he has a cigarette or booze or both. Drugs were also in the mix.

@@RyanMonty You're missing the point. Gene Simmons saw the band because they were getting a lot of good gigs with DLR as their front man. Who changed the name from Mammoth to Van Halen? Roth. He was a great marketer, in addition to his songwriting and performing abilities. Eddie was great, don't get me wrong. But there's a ton of great guitarists out there who never made it to that level because they weren't in a band that could draw crowds. They play around here and there for years and then they decide to get a "real job". Ed was lucky to have Dave working with him, and vice versa.
I wouldn't say I was ever a huge Van Halen fan but for me, Diamond Dave was the heart of that band, all antics aside. Couldn't stand what they did with Sammy despite their popularity. To me, they just devolved into another hair band at that point.
Typical corporate journalist statement: “Eddie sounds real bitter about David’s split” And then when Rona calls him out on his false tough guy bravado.. @@Rob-bo7yn So read Eddie's interview with David Fricke of Rolling Stone a month later on this tour. Fricke mentions Eddie's "breakfast beer". Fact is, when you cannot get up in the morning without dry heaving and having the shakes, and you must have alcohol to calm it, that is a severe problem. Edward himself has talked about how he used to get drunk as early as 12 years old, always before school. There is no need to "lighten up". That is a severe problem and nothing to be proud of. Alcoholism killed his father later this year (86) and would have killed his brother if he would not have quit that spring after realizing the death of his father as a wakeup call.

Also Dave’s band kicked Van Hagar’s ass. In the last 5 years Ed admitted that Dave was part of the DNA of the best version of the band. In the end the original VH is the best HARD ROCK version. DLR Band is the second best HARD ROCK version Van Hagar is the best RADIO FRIENDLY/ADULT CONTEMPORARY POP version. And VH III had some of Eddie’s greatest playing on it. It’s all worth listening to as long as the singers stick only to their own lyrics. Peace! R.I.P. Edward Van Halen 1955-2020.
Mrs. Norman Reedus yes, The Van Halen brothers are very vindictive.. they were just trying to disrespect Roth. If you see the look on sammys face when Alex made that statement he acts like that’s the first he’s heard of that...
Mrs. Norman Reedus , it is unfortunate and sad. I am a huge Van Halen fan and respect their contributions in taking rock to the next level. In my opinion, artistic people Can be very insecure, because their art is so personal, they subject themselves to criticism, and are often defensive.. also, people who make bad decisions often feel the need to justify those bad decisions. During this particular interview both of the brothers were deep into addiction, which also opens the door foe insecurity.. do you honestly believe Sammy Quit? Eddie swears up and down that’s what happened, then he says Sammy had a poor work ethic. I’m sorry but that’s really hard to swallow conditioning Sammys constantly cranking out hit after hit in the years leading up to his career with Van Halen. I was at one of the last shows they did in Oklahoma City. Eddie was so wasted he busted his ass falling down when he made his entrance.. I do give him credit for not missing a lick while he laid on his back trying to get up. I know from personal experiences with people who are dependent on drugs or alcohol, that they can’t help not telling the truth when they were wrong. I guess I just chose to believe Sammy.. The first record they did with Sammy (5150) was as magical as Van Halen 1. It was a tremendously beneficial situation for everyone, the predictable tale of drug and alcohol abuse had.reared its ugly head once again at the end of this awesome collaboration... I was broken hearted when they split.... Does this sound plausible to you?

I prefer the original line-up and the first six albums, but MAN did DLR shoot himself in the foot by leaving. VH was still really successful without him for the most part, and his solo career got weaker with every album until he was a punchline in the 90s. The instrumentalists might have been the core of the group but DLR was still the front man who made them stars. I think Sammy was great too, but I hate to see them so dismissive of Dave.
Eddie made them stars.
Without Eddie Van Halen, nobody ever knows who David Lee Roth is. Without DLR, everyone would still know who Eddie Van Halen is...
@@RyanMonty How would everyone know who EVH is? Was he going to go solo like Hendrix, who sang? I don't care how good Eddie was, he needed a great front man just like Randy Rhoads needed Ozzy and Page needed Plant. Remember, Roth was also the lyricist for their hits. Eddie needed Dave just like Dave needed Eddie.
@@JewandGreek because he revolutionized Rock guitar. It didn't matter who sang. Anyone competent, and they were going to be famous because of Eddie. Period.
If Eddie is a mediocre-to-good guitarist, nobody knows who Van Halen is.
@@JewandGreek hell, Gene Simmons wanted him to play in KISS. I promise you he woulda been just fine...
Where did he just throw his cigarette? On the floor??
NO. He flicked it in to an ashtray 2.4mtrs away. 😎
Now we know who was starting all the California wildfires.
What's up with the breakfast club dance at the end? That was painful to watch.
I wouldn't say I was ever a huge Van Halen fan but for me, Diamond Dave was the heart of that band, all antics aside. Couldn't stand what they did with Sammy despite their popularity. To me, they just devolved into another hair band at that point.
Always was and always will be daves band

75 años (76).
Did those guys ever spend a single sober day back in the day ?
I hope not
Why would they?
Typical corporate journalist statement: “Eddie sounds real bitter about David’s split”
And then when Rona calls him out on his false tough guy bravado..
Bryan just glares at her…
“We’ll talk…aka…”how dare you embarrass me on National TV by not agreeing with and telling me what I wanna hear”
F the Media!!
I can’t think of one Sammy song I like!
Eddie,
Rona's hair made me appreciate the 80's being over.
Rumor has it the carpet matched the drapes.
Check out Eddie always with a beer and chain smoking. That’s what got him. I was doin the same thing back in those days.
He never really stopped until maybe 2008, but you see videos of him still smoking in 2010 2011
Do you guys do exercise? And the man smoking at her face!
😂😂
Van Halen at one time was a good band especially after David Lee left but the bottom line is it’s over kids😞
Has been since Balanced
Well it certainly is over now.
Why are they playing You Really Got Me so damn fast?? 😳 ( ... and why is Sam wearing a diaper? 3:03 🤣 )
Sammy, those shorts ugh... he certainly didn't dress better than Dave
Eddie with a beer first thing in the morning. Can't even do an interview without drinking.
The interview was obviously recorded and then run on the Today Show. Granted he had his problems with alcohol, but there's no way to know what time of day they did the interview. Lighten up.
Have you read Noel's book? Lots of what going on at this point is explained in the years preceeding. Great read!
I was thinking the same thing thing .. and coke Cain
@Fryx Ur Now the musicians being interviewed are popping Xanax and opiates before the interview.
@@Rob-bo7yn
So read Eddie's interview with David Fricke of Rolling Stone a month later on this tour.
Eddie and Alex talking so much shit about Dave! "The core of van halen"???? Dave was the life! Eddie was the music!
@Erik remember dave got back in the band in 07? At that press conference?...when Eddie said.."my new brother"...he always talks shit! Love the musician, love the bad ass guitar god he always will be...but, man...that guy sometimes!...always talking shit!
Then Eddie shit on Mike Anthony too later in life .
@@zabercrombie24 oh yes they did! Super sad...he didn't deserve that at all.... From what I can tell. Eddie and Alex both live in a weird bubble that only the brothers comprehend as perfectly fine!
His playing wasn't showcased with Dave? She clearly doesn't know WTF she's talking about. That's why he had instrumentals on 4 of 6 Dave records.
And Dave tried to stifle all of it because he hated being overshadowed by Eddie.
Not a fan of Van Hagar fan but it’s all great because of Ed and Al. I can’t stand to hear Hagar singing the classic VH. I love Eddie. Hagar’s lyrics are not even close to Diamond Dave’s.
I’m calling BS on Alex saying “Sammy was our first choice in 77”
As opposed to DLR?
Mrs. Norman Reedus yes, The Van Halen brothers are very vindictive.. they were just trying to disrespect Roth. If you see the look on sammys face when Alex made that statement he acts like that’s the first he’s heard of that...
mark overstreet oh wow. Yeah I’ve heard that enough times not to believe it ! How can the world’s two greatest living rock musicians be so insecure?
Mrs. Norman Reedus , it is unfortunate and sad. I am a huge Van Halen fan and respect their contributions in taking rock to the next level. In my opinion, artistic people
Can be very insecure, because their art is so personal, they subject themselves to criticism, and are often defensive.. also, people who make bad decisions often feel the need to justify those bad decisions.
Oh course! That statement wss made to piss DLR off.
Smokin refer Eddie?
Van Halen With Sammy in 78 would have broken up by 86
Sammy turned Van Halen into a soft rock adult contemporary Top 40 band
Imagine how weak that first album would've been with Sammy on it
Maybe so but a lot of us love the Sammy days ☺️
@@staceyroberts3468 I bet you also loved Disney's Peter Pan 👏😄
Sammy and Eddie both are to blame for cutting off the balls of the music. Pretty much everything the band did after 1984 with Sammy is just horrible.
If they didn’t have those hits, they probably would have been dropped from their major label
@@bechawk3434 lol, what bull...
Van Halen didn't need to resort to weak top 40 Sammy Hagar songs to keep their record label happy.
Metallica, Guns & Roses we're putting out hard rock heavy metal music and weren't dropped from their label
You've now been schooled 🎓
Eat em and smile smoked this album.
I pick David over Sammy as the superior front man !
Everybody with at least one ear should do the same, I think.
"Alex, Michael and I the core of Van Halen?" Bullshit. Read Noel Monk's book. He notes how Eddie and Dave wrote all the songs. Mike and Alex were decent backup guys but mostly lucky to be along for the ride.
Exactly Eddie and Dave were the core of the early Van Halen
Sammy looks like he’s wearing a diaper lol
How ironic Mike is with Sammy now.
David Leave Roth
i could tell form the thumbnail this is def not "high quality" in fact, almost total opposite!
For a VHS copy from 1986 it is.
I prefer the original line-up and the first six albums, but MAN did DLR shoot himself in the foot by leaving. VH was still really successful without him for the most part, and his solo career got weaker with every album until he was a punchline in the 90s. He just didn't seem to get that he needed that strong musical foundation to ground his schtick.
If you're a true Van Halen fan Eddie and Alex were the band and I thought they were better Sammie don't care what anybody says David Lee Roth was too much of a macho man
5150 is a great album, but it’s not Diver Down
Geez if she smiled would her face break loosen up gurl
That's true!! Ted Templeman..(Yeah, DAVE'S Ted!!) At first wanted to FIRE Dave, and suggested Montrose front Man Sammy Hagar!! Ted, along with ALOT of others looked at Roth as to much of a Jim Dandy (Vocalist, Black Oak Arkansas..) Copycat, and he finally grew on him.
"Do you guys exercise"....wtf?????
Much better quality?? Its 30 years old!! Why upload?
