Both geniuses. Alex was actually more intelligent. I met him at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas in 1992 and he was playing piano in three lounge. Cleaning crew recognized him and the manager of the hotel said, well whatever you do, don’t tell him to stop. Let him play. It was very early in the am and he just played and played and played. All kinds of songs. Rock, classical, jazz. Drumming with his left or right hand on the piano to keep the beat as needed. He wound up leaving with a beautiful young Latina woman who worked at the hotel.

Alex and Eddie Van Halen are Rock Gods. Immigrant kids who didn't even speak the language early on, but learned it, worked their asses off as musicians, wrote and performed amazing tunes, etc. I'm so sick to death of idiots praising Diamond Dave, who did nothing other than leeching off other peoples' talent (exhibit 1: His first solo record consisted entirely of covers. I rest my case). Meanwhile, Eddie was writing great music, and he and Alex were perfecting their art. Long live Alex and Eddie Van Halen, true geniuses. Everyone else? Hangers-on.
I think they're great too but the truth is their recording output ground to a halt after Sammy left. A few years later Eddie looked like a homeless person at death's door. If anything it's become clear over the years that the only way those two can be creatively productive is if they let someone else take the reins in the band.
There are no other Gods besides Lord Jesus Christ as we all will find out on judgement day.

Just imagine the sounds coming out of their bedroom when they were kids. Probably some amazing stuff, their is a tight bond between those two. I love all of Van Halen’s music both Roth and Hagar. But let’s be honest the reason we all like Van Halen is the sound of those drums and that kick ass guitar work, I don’t care who is singing.

In haert and soule and special in eachother, Alex and Edward soulbroh"s from birth ,I hope so much that Alex is gonna do something Cause he is a awsome drummer HE DRUMS LIKE EDWARD PLAYED GUITAR , and thats on his best Alex Van Halen just is a Bad ass drumplayer and EDWARD AND ALEX ARE BORN IN HOLLAND thats a part of there gift my Broh's from Holland. @@chucktanner3826 It started way before that in '84. Buy and read Noel Mon'k's book Runnin' With The Devil." He was the manager through the entire Roth era. It's also free on RUclips as a book-on-tape sort of thing.

Alex's comment about Holdsworth is actually very interesting. Probably the most innovative technical genius ever, but could he write a memorable song? Not so much. Eddie had virtuosity but maybe even more importantly wrote songs that people can hear once and always remember.

From all accounts Michael A is one of the really good guys in the business. He was screwed over by the other guys in the band. In the beginning all the profits were split equally. By the time the band had finished touring in support of their third album Michael had begun to amass a small fortune. He was good with his money and in large part stayed away from the drugs. His bandmates and particularly Ed had blown almost all their money on the excesses of the rock god lifestyle. Ed had a huge drug habit and was constantly broke. Dave and Alex were not doing much better. The three acted like any good drug attic would and conspired to dramatically decrease Michael’s share of the profits in order to fund their drug habits. Michael has too much class to ever speak of any of these matters publicly, but several people close to the band have spoken how publicly on his behalf. Being a virtuoso musician doesn’t necessarily mean you’re not an asshole.

Ed always seems so different in interviews. Here he is introspective and so nice and loving - other times he's so pissed off and grouchy, and then there's the drunk Ed who's confused. I'd like to meet him but you never know who's showing up when it comes alcoholics. Has anyone met him?
