You do not bend the steering wheel. There is a bolt you remove I believe is 9/16. Half way down the steering column and the whole thing will move out of the way.
that's which is just connected to positive and negative from the running lights on the dashboard. you should be able to tap into that with no problems. those lights turn off two separate light switches. the first switch turns on the running lights. the second switch turn on the headlights and possibly the running light at the same time depending whether it's a three-way switch
if the wires got really hot that means that you are shorted out somewhere most likely you are touching ground. Are you sure you're connecting it from hot to hot? if the connection is correct most likely one wire is going to be pinched with the body of the truck somewhere

That’s not a parking brake in fact it probably says right on it “not for parking”.
You lost me as soon as you said to bend the steering wheel. Just pull the damn thing off rather than hack it up!

I tried doing what you did , but the wire got really hot so I had to disconnect it. Any idea on what I did wrong?
