WHAT THE HELL!!! An hour online trying to figure out what was wrong with my dash lights and this guy nails it one minute into the video. WHY IS THIS NOT COMMON KNOWLEDGE??? Thank you very much!!
My dash lights went out and I went to my car owners manual for help. After being more confused, couldn’t find a fuse link decided to goggle the fix. Came upon your video and “ woolah “ problem solved. Thanks for saving me time and headache. My rt tail light was burnt out , replaced bulb / fuse and dash lights worked. Thanks again
You are my hero. I just bought an Astro van with a good sticker, but no brake lights and also no dash lights. In the past, that has been the headlight switch. I bought another on, but no improvement. I also couldn't find an blown fuses. So I took apart the taillight assembly and the bulbs still look OK. I decide to unscrew one and the glass part is just spinning. Went to the other side and same thing. I had to use pliers to get the bulbs out, but when replaced, everything was fixed. I spoke to other car guys and they didn't know the dash lights can go out when you have a blown taillight (or two).
What year is your van ? I have a 92 Astro and no headlights at all, I replaced the Headlight switch but no repair. I downloaded some troubleshooting steps and at the end of all tests it says the problem is the Headlight Dimmer switch. I will try replacing that and see if it works. My dashboard lights are also not working but that seems to be the cluster switch. I will change that also.
I have a 2005 Astro van. Having the same problem. I have headlights and the lights come on when I hit the brakes and I have no running tail lights and no dash lights
This is great information. Most of us go down the wrong rabbit hole trying to figure out the problem. For weak daytime dash lights, which I have in my 12 year old Ford Expedition, I'm going to check the tail light bulbs and grounds for corrosion. On Fords, this is a fertile area in which to find the cause of problems when multiple MILs appear, odd DTCs, and apparently dim or non-functioning cluster illumination and other dash lights. Thanks again for this video. And, yes, I have already removed the cluster and reflowed every solder joint, and replaced the dimmer switch, but still can't read the odometer or any other back-lit messages in daylight. At night, it works fine.
thank you , im a 62 year old my dash light when out few days ago , just checked rear lights and will be on my way to get the light to replace it my self,, was about to take it to the mechanic you saved me bunch of money i cant spent now 👍👍👍
6 years later and this information is still useful! Rear-running lights did go out at the same time now that I think about it. However, I do have one question. Before finding this video, I had taken my cluster apart to check bulbs and voltage and found some current coming through the leads that go to the cluster lights. However, they didn't work and I tried expanding the metal leads in case they weren't making contact to no avail. I also checked each bulb individually (all still good) and saw no issue with the circuitry. Just wondering if the rear-running lights would cause the voltage to be too low for the cluster to turn on? I should mention they are on the same switch from factory.
Brilliant video pal. My dash board lights went out but no bulbs were blown. It turned out to be a wiring fault with my towbars electric plug. Rewired in a new plug and all's well again. Thank you..
Thanks so much! My dash lights didn't work and I thought I might have spend a lot of money to get them to work. Thanks to your video, I tested all my lights and noticed the parking lights also did not work. I replaced the fuse for the parking lights and my dash lights started working too.
Great info, this is exactly what happed to me. My rear drivers side tail light went out and so did my dash panel on my 56 chevy. Who would have thought. Thank and for the help, much appreciated.
Thanks for the tip. I just picked up a 2000 Chevy Astro van with no dashboard lights working and I figured it was a fuse or a bad headlight switch. I'll check the taillights first.
Thank you Richard! yeppers fuse for the tail lights, but put in another and pop pop pop - so maybe bulb causing short - haven't got that far, but that's okay - moving in the right direction! You Rock!
Tried this to fix the back lighting on my instrument cluster on my 2003 Chevy Tahoe. It didn't work, but I found that my front passenger side turn indicator was out. So it's a small win. Thanks for the video.
I never comment ever on these. But this guy asked sincerely in my opinion ,and honestly, for how much he saved me monetarily I will do as he asked. Go and get a bulb first. It worked.
Thank you so much I couldn't figure out why my dashboard light went out for no reason out of the blue one day while I was driving. I was trying to Google it trying to find out why checked everything everything was good battery was good fuses were good. and then I watched your video and it told me to check my lights which I did and which I did have one that was out I really appreciate you thank you so much you really put me at ease. I was very stressed out about how much money it was going to cost me to get my car fixed so thank you.
Hey Richard Ray, It's great to see ya bro. All four tail and running lights went out. All fuses good. Then I noticed that the dash lights were out too. And then I noticed one of those pain in the wazoo low beams was out. AAAAARRGH! The Sky is Falling. OK the sky is all good. But I thought that my wire harness was attacking me from all angles. Thanks for the genius is simplicity type mellowing words of automobile wisdom oh great one. I should have tried changing the bulbs. I can go back to being lazy again. Whew!!! Many good things to you and yours.
Thanks Richard on your good tip but my problem seems different. This is regarding my Cadillac Escalade ESV 2008. See if you can help. After my battery going weak due to long parking time, and a recent jump (That has not been very unusual in past but always with happy ending and uneventful, this time my car started but I noticed no dash backlight at all so I can't see any speed or data but all four indicator levels are flashing blue constantly. I don't see a failed lamp. I was told to disconnect battery over night that didn't help either. Another suggested solution was to keep the key in the door and hold it for longer than 10 second and that was with no avail. Do you have any suggestions before I get it to the dealer that might ask for one of my kidneys to repair? Thanks man.
Super experienced mechanic replaced my ignition switch and that evening I noticed that the light over the engine temperature indicator was really faded. When I mentioned it to him he acted like he had no clue why and yet this YT guy indicated that with Chevy El Dorados there was a connection between the lights going out and the ignition switch. I found that fascinating. I have a Toyota Corolla. It's been a month or so since that happened but now it's completely faded out. I can still see it with the other part of the dash lit up but I wonder what's causing it. Is there a connection to the ignition? I'm having a faulty starter as well because I bought a crap refurbished one from AutoZone. It's literally been sketchy since it was first installed 2 years ago.
Cool. Trouble shooting this electrical issue with Intermittent instrument panel Replaced a burnt out wire and bulb, and still same issue. I did replace ignition switch, with no trouble starting or anything. So I'm going go over everything from lights to grounds and I'm not ASE Certified 😭. Thanks for info
Thanks for this info! I nearly didn't watch the video after skipping through and not seeing any car parts visible. One of my Nissan Terranos probably has this very problem - it's my old farm hack, so no biggie. The other Terrano - the road one - has no dash warning lights showing at ignition "on" position except the handbrake light. Any thoughts there? All the fuses in the kick panel are good. Alternator isn't charging, if that gives any clues. Thanks.
1996 cadallac fleetwood brougham, center console went dark, no AC, no heater, no radio, defogger, nothing between the two fan outlets, checked numerous sites. Looking at yours to possibly get some kind of hint.
I just got a 2000 Pontiac Boneville SE and drove it last night....dash lights dont work for the gauges...PRND321 works fine...warning lights work. but I dont know how you figured it out but I think I'm gonna go fix 3 of 4 of my tail lights right now....
Thank you for sharing. I don't know why so many miserable people go around giving thumbs down to videos they probably didn't even watch. What goes around comes around.
i have a 98 honda civic lx i noticed my dash lights aren't working but then also noticed i have a break light out so if i fix this issue will it for sure fix the dash lights as well ??
thanks you are the man just had my dash lights go out one block from the house was ready to start ripping things out watch your video check and the tail lights were out fuse blown replace it and everything is working.
97 Nissan pickup truck that I raised from the graveyard. My dog ripped all the wiring harness out from under the truck. when we got it ruining we couldn't find why the idiot light wasn't working. That helps.
Hey Richard, great tutoring. I have a much older ambulance. Its a Renault Master T35 year 199something. mum was driving u a hill and noticed to row dash lights go out. Then the engine stalled and she stopped. The head lights work and the rest of the dash lights. Got to go help tomorrow. Any advice mate?
The jeep 96 I got lost dimmer then lost dashlites then tail lites. It was my dimmer switch panel thing that did two jobs at once. Good video though 😊 made sence.
I have a 2009 Silverado. O e minute the Gage lights are fine. I park and then i go to start the truck and they dont work. Just started doin it. I checked my lights like u said ut all good . Any suggestions. Im hoping it not the $80.00 switch. Thank for your time. And how the hell you loose alll that wait?.
I have a Rav 4, 2024, and after pressing buttons on the windshield for the left/right and door light recently my vehicle now has no lights in the instrument panel to illuminate temperature/defogger, A/C heat etc functions lighted up...did I disable something from the windshield light control?! TIA.
I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt. The dash lights work, but I notice when I start it not all the idiot lights come on, The bright light, parking brake and seatbelt lights come on but check engine, overhearing light etc... don't come on. I'm worried I won't know if I'm overheating( since there's no temp gauge) or need to check engine for something. These are the ones that come on and go off after starting it. What do you think? Thanks
Hey thanks for the tip . I started my car and all of the sudden my dash light and my speed thermometer and gas gauge isn’t working . Would you know why ? I own a 2003 bmw 325 ci . Thanks
It was the turn signal/ headlight switch on my 95 nissan truck. Sometimes they would work and sometimes not, it also affected my rear brake marker lights (parking lights) when the dash lights weren't working.
Mr. Ray what if you are blowing the gauge cluster fuse on a 03 ford expedition ever run across that problem???? Oh yeah, great vid awesome Info thanks.
common problem with wires for OD switch inside column shorting out due to rubbing www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1159588-gauges-fuse-keep-blowing-when-i-move-gear-shifter-to-drive.html
I just replaced the instrument cluster on a 2012 Mazda 3. Now the Immobilizer is flashing and not allowing the Vehicle to start. Any Ideas? Thanks Richard
Hi Richard, this info is great. Just a question, my climate control, hvac, headlight switch and other lights do not go on(the switches do not light up at night) but also watching this video i know that my number plate bulbs are out and should this be my problem as i haven't had a chance to get around to the shop and change those bulbs.
Okay. What if the dash lights don't turn off at all?? They only turn off when my driver's door is *open*. It is annoying as now I have to always leave my driver's door slightly ajar so the lights inside don't come on. Sometimes, though it randomly doesn't do it. What does this mean?? I have thought about trying to get someone to just remove the fuse for the dash lights completely just so I don't have them so I don't constantly have to worry about a possible dead battery.
I'm having issues with my dash lights not working. I've checked & replaced all of my exterior lamps to insure they are working properly. I have also replaced my headlight / dimmer controller and checked as many fuses as I could and still nothing. I can't find a specific fuse for my dash lights. Where is it located? All of my other interior lights are working along with my radio lights. Any insight as to what I'm missing? 2004.5 GMC 2500HD 403 Duramax (LLY)
what should i check for my 2010 cadillac CTS4. my instument control panel/gauge displays is totally black. no lights and no needle movement at all. also, on the dual climate control functions... only the passenger side is illuminated and you can adjust the temp. the driver side is blank. Any suggestions would be great. fuse, tail light. and fyi... my driver side head light (normal) is out. only the highbeam comes on - the driver side and not on the passenger. but the regular light comes on the passenger but not on the driver side. i paid the dealership $850 a couple of years ago to replace the instrument control panel. i don't want to have to do that again. fingers crossed. please help/advise.
Ford did a Light Control Module bypass due to a headlight failure. With in 2 weeks of the Ford bypass I loss my blinkers, Tail lights, panel lights, over head dome lights, the panic button on my key fob no longer triggers to horn for panic, when I lock the door the horn doesn't beep anymore like it used to. Is it possible the bypass work is faulty causing this problem. They are telling me they did nothing to the LCM just bypass it. I know the bypass requires splicing and cuts into to specific wires. I also know the LCM does control everything I just mentioned but it seems hard to believe it not related since I didn't have the problems before. Now the only thing that works is the headlights and my break lights. Everything else lighting wise does not. Whats your opinion. I go back to the dealer tomorrow to have them confirm what they did is still good.
So 4 weeks my dash light has been flickering on and off and then it's fine now yesterday and went off the whole time I was driving then this morning it was off when I start the car then I start driving and it came back on I'm wondering if it's a fuse if so it should be an easy fix right I just replace the fuse or like you said it might be a tail light or headlight but I haven't checked to see if they go out I don't believe they are out which makes me think that it possibly is the fuse but now you're saying it could be a switch so I would like to fix it myself if it is an easy fix but I need to First figure out what is wrong with it in order to fix it
Instument panel is totally dark at night! One cause = On my 2013 Lexus RX, to the left of the steering column, there is a tiny light-bulb symbol with "down" arrow on one side and "up" arrow on opposite side. The arrows allow adjusting the brightness of the instrument panel lighting. It is totally dark at night (unless headlights are cut off) if the "down" arrow is all the way down. As you press the "up" or "down" arrow, an image comes onto the instrument panel to demo the degree of brightness. Someone may have turned them all the way down (deliberately or by mistake).
I got 2006 range Rover won't crank no lights on dash except airbag light with key on position. New battery all fuses and relays checked ok. The head light don't work either and the horn. Could it be a bad instrument cluster?
2004 Toyota Corolla, half of the heater control lights sometimes work and sometimes they don't, only the left side has this issue, Auto electrician checked alternator, no current leaks, brand new battery, what could cause this issue ?
2009 ford Edge in the rain we loose dash lights and head lights only when the switch is in automatic. Switch in manual On all lights work fine in the rain.. No rain everything works fine.
Hi i have a nissan altima 2008 3.5 the gas light on dashboard doesn’t work to replace the light do i need to change the whole part ? Or just remove the cluster and replace bul ? Thank you
I have a Dodge Ram with a bad dash light for headlights. Only the light comes on when I have the fog lights on. The headlight switch seems to be working great. No play in it or clicking. My next step is to go to auto zone and see if they might know and maybe later I'll try a new switch.
This video blew my mind. I was driving on the freeway in my 2000 golf at night and my cluster lights just turned off. Had me like wtf how much this gonna cost, but wow it really was a fucking tail light! This is a life hack to me tyvm💯
Richard, I have been having issues with my 2005 Dodge Ram. The gauges light up but none of the warning or informational lights light up. The odometer, gear selection indicator, high beam indicators and even the turn signal indicators wont light up. All lights and turn signals work outside the truck. I did the instrument cluster diagnostic test and the gauges did the sweeps but no lights or codes came up in the odometer area. Any idea? Thanks
I have a 05 Hyundai Elantra and on my way home the other night the dash lights went off. I continued to get to the house and when I arrived, I did in fact have a passenger taillight out. Today I replaced the taillight and the dash lights arent on still. Checked the fuse and its fine. Not sure what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My 2000 ford expedition sun visor light don't work, engine compartment light (under the hood) doesn't work and rear wiper doesn't work either. Noticed that all stopped working about the same time. Already replaced the wiper motor and still doesn't work. Switched relays in fuse box in engine compartment and checked all fuses. Everything seems to be OK. Any thoughts
hello buddy. Joe here all the way from England. I have a Nissan primera 4 door saloon year 1998.I had a original nissan primera tape deck radio with code etc. I had a audio guy install a CD player with aux connectivity, a 1200 amp and sub woofer. before he installed it I had tail lights, dash lights and a fog light and dipped and sidelights. I now have only indicators , full head lights (front) and full beam and no tail light or dash lights. I've changed the tail light amp and still have no tail lights. could it be a wire that has tripped or the earth wire that has been put on a bolt in the bonnet
did they use a plug & play wiring harness or did they cut original harness? most problems would be wired radio wrong amp fuse or burned out bulb in rear of vehicle often the dimmer switch is turned off but that would not affect the other lights. there is fuse under hood and also in cabin I believe. but do not have diagram for that vehicle.
Hi L&R "XRays". My Chevy Lumina 1996 dash lights are lost. I have checked all lights. All lights working ok. When light main switch is off radio lights are ok, but turning switch on...no dash lights and radio light goes off too. Main switch dimmer is not working, but when turning to the end it will light up interior light. I checked fuses too and the seem to be everything ok. Air conditioning is is only thing which is not working. Clutch in compressor is not working. But thats propably effect my dash light issue. -Rale
I have a 1998 Ford Expedition and I need to replace my rear third light connectors since they are carroded. Will this cause my instrument panel cluster lights not work?
Thank you!!! That's exactly what happened and you saved me hundreds of dollars from a shop. Your video is 7 years old and its 2023. Thank you
WHAT THE HELL!!! An hour online trying to figure out what was wrong with my dash lights and this guy nails it one minute into the video. WHY IS THIS NOT COMMON KNOWLEDGE??? Thank you very much!!

Thank you Richard. This is 2023 and this information is still good…🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU GOT THIS JEDI KNOWLEDGE, BUT THE AUTO-FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE.
carl moore Love it!
I love these videos! They can save you a lot of money.
Lmao right!
Lol. I was thinking the same thing. I was like...is he for real?

Dude, this make perfect sense. My headlamp went out and that triggers my dash lights to flickers. Thank you!🙏🏾
You're a nice guy Richard. I am sure you will help many that are not mechanical ofay. Cheers, Fletch - NSW Australia.

How did u lose the 116lvs?
you're a genius. Thank you so much for this information. I freaked out when my dashboard lights did not turn on. One of my side front lights is out.

I will change the light bulbs tomorrow and Daddy will be her hero again

What car you have?
Thx from Sweden. 😊
You, my friend… are a legend. 👍🏻 thank you ☺️
Wow never would have thought.thanks so much!!!
would this be the same situation for a 1989 chevy k1500 truck?
@@RichardRayBuyHerbalifeNow Thanks I'll check it .have a great weekend I'll let you kno!
Thank you this was useful information I appreciate that and that does make a lot of sense.
Great advise, blown fuse for tale light, fixed the dash light issue!, Thanks a bunch!!
Thanks Richard!! You just saved me!!
I have 2005 Chevy trail blazer and my abs brake light ,service air bags and the fix light on my dash board will not go out what should I do
I'm having issues with my dash lights not working.
Thanks Richard you saved me a lot of money and frustration
Thanks
Thank you Herbalife Mecanic 🌱
Thank you so much, this is what happened to my husbands 1984 El Camino.
I was having the same issue with my 84 Elk. What a coincidence!
Would a license plate light also cause the dash lights to fail?
yes someone mentioned that was their fix
A front left marker light cause this also???
Thank you Richard! 👍
Good shout ,nice one mate
Will this apply to the rpm and speedometer needles not lighting up?
yes exactly also check tailights
Thanks Richard . This was a new one to me.
Thank you just saved me from removing my cluster. All it took was a screwdriver and a brand new bulb.
Thanks for the info.
Switch in manual
On all lights work fine in the rain.. No rain everything works fine.
2011 Mini Cooper. No turn signals, half of the dash lights, and the windows are not working what does this sound like the problem could be?
Hi i have a nissan altima 2008 3.5 the gas light on dashboard doesn’t work to replace the light do i need to change the whole part ? Or just remove the cluster and replace bul ? Thank you
I have a Dodge Ram with a bad dash light for headlights. Only the light comes on when I have the fog lights on. The headlight switch seems to be working great. No play in it or clicking. My next step is to go to auto zone and see if they might know and maybe later I'll try a new switch.
Thank you very helpful you saved my day and time thanks again
I've changed the tail light amp and still have no tail lights. could it be a wire that has tripped or the earth wire that has been put on a bolt in the bonnet
did they use a plug & play wiring harness or did they cut original harness?
most problems would be wired radio wrong
amp fuse or burned out bulb in rear of vehicle
often the dimmer switch is turned off but that would not affect the other lights.
there is fuse under hood and also in cabin I believe. but do not have diagram for that vehicle.
-Rale
thank you so much! you were such a big help! it was just a fuse i thought it would cost me more so it was a major relief
I have a 1998 Ford Expedition and I need to replace my rear third light connectors since they are carroded. Will this cause my instrument panel cluster lights not work?
