Loved they had the dude that played Yoren in game of thrones say the line "it'll be a feast for crows"... that meta shit!
Nyda I caught that too😊
There are tons of other gems like that. They gave us a whole YEAR to excavate it all.
A Jon snow was spotted during the Duny-pavetta brawl ‘muh queen’
So glad you’re here with Witcher insights.
I KNEW it was him! I also caught that but thought I was wrong when I went to the actor's Wikipedia page, and didn't see The Witcher mentioned in his list of works. Should have gone to IMDB.
Don’t know if you noticed but the actress who plays Calanthe plays Maggy the Frog in Game if Thrones. Didn’t notice at first but someone pointed it out to me.
Harry S Nice catch!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I recognized her immediately. GoT was such a favorite of mine that I find myself looking for actors from the show in just about everything I watch. I'm actually surprised that there weren't more actors from GoT in Witcher.
That's why she looked so familiar every time I saw her! I was so confused why I felt like I recognised her haha
Jack Purkiss yeah I was convinced I’d seen her before too. Her performance is probably my favourite in the series.
Harry S
I was wondering what I recognized her from, but I kept forgetting to look it up. Thank you.
He’s called Jaskier because that’s his original Polish name. It translates into Buttercup so they changed it to Dandelion or Dandillion in English.
shinrugal they should have gone with the English or games translation of Dandilion.
@@SlowBoatSailing no, you don't traslete the name of people. The games and books should have keep the original name.
@@anaiglesias9972 why ? Because the show should be in Polish and
called the Hexer if that's the case. You wouldn't know the show is originally Polish from the show Beside Jaskier.
@@jasonpelletier8066 In Polish the show would be called Wiedźmin. The Hexer is just a different translation than The Witcher.
@@marciusnhasty right but it's not in Polish . So to say you can't translate the name to what everyone knows it as is silly . It's not about keeping the show polish.
17:40 If you stop the video at this time, there is gold round thing attached to Geralt's sword. It's Renfri's medallion. Geralt took it when he left Blaviken. He gave it to king Foltest before the battle with Striga. Triss returned it back to Geralt after the battle. Basically the show runners made another circle. Geralt failed to save one princess in Blaviken (Renfri), but redeemed his mistake by saving another one in Temeria (Striga). In Episode 4 he attached Renfri's medallion to his sword. It's literally the Sword of Destiny :D
3:39 Queen Calanthe should be 12 years old when she won her 1st battle. Because Ciri is 12 years old. It's from the dialogue between Geralt and Calanthe. Geralt said something like: "I have not been in Cintra for 12 years". Well, when he was in Cintra, Pavetta was pregnant with Ciri. So, it means the time gap is not 30 years. It's 33 years.
21:54 Cmon. It's not Sparrow. It does not even look like a sparrow. It's Zirael. Also known to humans as Swallow =)
Also the symbol before ep.3 is a Temerian lilly with monster claws.
The sword of destiny is also connected to Ciri (another Princess) and Brokilon.
The show contradicts Ciris age although in episode 1 she states that she's the same age as the queen when she won her first battle which would be 15 but in episode 7 when Geralt meets the Queen (after the scene with the assassins) he states that he's been gone for 12 years which would make Ciri 11 - 12 years old. Just wondering if anybody else caught that.
Not really, he coul have went to see he queen after de born of ciri and before pabetas death
ma fe No, mousesack already notifies Geralt that Ciri‘s parents are dead when he went to check on Ciri. He gets thrown into the dungeon right afterwards aswell. So if he hasn‘t spent at least some years (which is unlikely lol) in the dungeon, the OP is right.
i think ciri meant to say that shes the same age of her mother when the queen first won her battle
@@mafe2315 Garalt also didnt even know Ciri was a girl when he arrived right before the invasion.
Am i trippin but when the witcher was younger with his mom( having the flashback) wasn't the gold dragon in the fireplace
Yes, but Borch wasn't accualy there in the past. Garalt was hallucinating.
Gray...did you have a look at Geralt and think "He would have been a damn good Rhaegar"
Simone adams - this was my first thought
Yes!!!!
thank god he didnt.....
Simone adams Geralt/Henry is too big, I think Rhargar is more lean..
I started watching and looked it up on IMDB before I realized it was actually Henry. I thought he resembled the Rhaegar from the marriage scene to Lyanna. I also thought it looked a lot like the crypts of winterfell too but I don't believe that is the case.
Nicely summed up. I try to explain how seemingly unrelated elements in stories are thematically linked, and people just look at me like, "what's a thematic?"
ARETUZA, not Artenuza
AEDERN, not Aden
FILAVANDREL, not Filandrel
NAZAIR, not Nazir
CONCLAVE, not Concleve
Having said that, nice analysis of the overarching themes, they make me appreciate the series more
And rare species, not rare spices :D
And a lot more holes in knowledge..
Also Cirilla not Cirella and Calanthe not Calantea
also Aedirn as well 😉
I wasn't going to even watch this show but Xmas Eve my husband had to work from Noon till 9 pm and I had all day to wrap and binge lol. I loved this show and its even better with you creating content for it!
Great and cohesive breakdown! Probably makes everybody appreciate this season more. I did notice two mistakes though: It is Aretuza not Artenuza. And Ciris emblem is not a sparrow but a swallow since her name Cirilla is based on the elven Zirael which means swallow.
Great breakdown. The law of surprise and timeline was confusing me.
I heard a shout out to GOT "a feast for crows" and "not on my watch" when Gerald was in the wagon with Yuron 👍
I compare Geralt to a combination of Jon Snow, Jorah Mormont and Sandor Clegane
What? Lol. Also dont compare post source material GOT garbage to the witcher. So far The Witcher starts out strong. Imo its actually better than game of thrones first season. Though I'd definitely say the witcher books aren't in anyway as good as ASOIAF... Maybe because I read it in english? Who knows.
Why are RUclipsrs saying "timeline" instead of "time periods"? The stories are occurring on the same timeline but are being shown non-chronologically.
I have never read The Witcher books or even knew of them before the Netflix show. that being said I was confused as hell watching the 1st few eps, until I realized they were time jumping. Watched a bunch of other video "explaining" the show, this by far was the best one! Thank you #subscribed
Thank you SO much for previewing this series after GOT! I love The Witcher! I've missed your narration and great content! (Shout out to SmokeScreen also!) This is a totally new world for me so I was very confused many times while watching. All the episodes in two days btw :D So thank you, this is very helpful! In future I'd love to hear more insight and history of the world and most importantly its different species, things I might have missed in the episodes , was left out from tv but happen in the books, things that might be helpful to know etc. Keep making us great videos and thank you
Why do you keep saying "Artenuza" I'm like 99% sure it's Aretuza..? There's no N.
Thank you for pointing this out, the pronunciation was driving me nuts!!
Also called Filavandrel Filandrel. Cut out an entire syllable.
Came to say this also...
Was thinking the saaaaaame THIIIIIING🤔
Cuz I’m slow
Apparently the reason they called him Jaskier (pronounced ya-skay or ya-sker I believe) is because that's his original name from the books before they were translated, and "dandelion" is actually a poor translation, it would be more like "buttercup" in a more direct translation but the translators/the game creators decided that was too feminine. This is just what I've heard
You are right and to be honest it is understandable, I think it is a good adaptation.
@targarynka I am glad that they went with Jaskier and made it their own. The thing I do not get is people relating it to GOT.
@targarynka it's called a t y p o
I was SO confused about what was going on. I finally realized there were at least two (and more likely three) timelines when Geralt showed up at Queen Calanthe’s party.
It just dawned on me. "Rare Species" being the title, obviously makes one think of the golden dragon, but as you mentioned, this episode's theme is legacy and family. The more deeper hidden message that because both Yennefer and Geralt are sterile, nothing will come of their relationship naturally, but with Ciri - which they don't know yet at this point. So their legacy is also a "rare species" due to the act of destiny and Ciri possessing the powerful Elder Blood.
So glad you're doing Witcher vids!
Best breakdown I've found on RUclips by far... Good job as always @GrayArea
Why do you keep referring to Ciri's timeline as being in the future, shouldn't it be considered the present?
The symbol at the beginning of the third episode is not only a hand of a striga, but also a heraldic emblem of a lily - the crest of Temeria.
And the reason for translating Jaskier to Dandelion was simple. In Polish it's the name of a flower (buttercup) that is very close to a word "jaskrawy" (flashy). So the translator chose a flower that has a name with a similar vibe: dandelion, like a dandy.
Great video Gray!
This is so great. Thank you very much for this summary and the work you put into this video! :)
Jaskier is the original polish name for Dandelion from the books (untranslated)
Jason Craig ahhh ok that makes sense
I read it actually means "Buttercup"? For some reason changed to Dandelion. I guess the point is he just has the gayest name imaginable.
@@robswitzer8334 yes jaskier is polish for buttercup I just think it was lost in translation of the books though
@Vicodyn i luv u so much
@Vicodyn yeah I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head mate
It's "Aretuza" not "artemusa". And it is not "J" in Jaskier. It's "Y". Call him Dandelion, and you'll be fine. The forest is "Brokilon" not blovikon. "Duny" is like "Dune" or "Dunnan Knut" not daniel. "Dancing" is the coolest way of saying it, although hilariously inadequate, because Geralt says 'let's dance' right before a hand-to-hand combat. Anyways, 99/100. A superb synopsis.
bruhhh no one cares😂
I didn't know Duny was pronounced that way, thanks!
I was thinking of exact same example of reading Duny like Dune :) by the way it should also have a soft "n" sound as in French accent. Sure, not many care but I actually really like all names Sapkowski came up with and like to hear them read properly. Props to Henry, everytime he says "Jaskier" I get goosebumps.
I'm pretty sure Duny sounds like Dooney
Your reviews never disappoint. UR very talented
Gray Lady returns!
Loved your analysis. Looking forward to more!
As soon as this video started I was immediately intrigued.
Tysm for making these videos! I went into the series completely blind and I was pretty confused, but you’ve cleared almost everything up, and I’ve definitely fallen in love with the Witcher series! :))
Elder blood, this isn't all elves that have it but a particular bloodline. Ciri is part of this bloodline and she could potentially be more powerful than Yennefer, by alot.
Loved it besides this. Thank you for the content and welcome to the witcher universe.
Nope ciri becomes a witcher cus that's what I chose in the game, not a sorceress!
@@christophershoup6598 Cool, but regardless what you chose in the game. She has elder blood, she has had it since birth, hence the reason she can teleport and the reason the wild hunt was chasing her.
What an awesome breakdown!!!! Great job girl!! 👍🏾
i know nothing of the witcher except the netflix series. do you have any idea how confusing the damn timeline was to me?
Hopefully my video helped
Same here!!
I am totally with you. Luckily Grea is here to help steer us.
@@GrayArea Absolutely it did.
You’ve explained this very well. Thank you
Thank you! Really, really enjoyed this video! I went into the season sort-of blind. I had watched your previous videos and other, but I haven’t read the books and I’m not a gamer. I LOVED the show! I could tell pretty quickly there were different time lines going on by catching a few things they said. After watching your video, I’m even more excited to rewatch it!
Sooo happy ur doing vibs on the Witcher :) Love it!
Excellent video! Thank you!
awesome! thanks so much for explaining. you make the viewing experience so much more enjoyable!
There's no 'n' in Aretuza :)
Where is this Arktenuza?
Omg such a good explanation. I was lost bc I didn’t know what was present and what was past. I’m 4 episodes in and now I know how it all flows together. Thx.
You did a really good job!!!!!!!! Thank you for this!
Amazing! Thank you for this.
Good! This is exactly what I’m looking for right now.
You know what . I get going through Netflix and seeing this. Then I saw you making videos about it, so I watched season 1 all day today!!! I love it 🥰
AR-e-TOOZ-a.
YASK-ier.
Job well done. Thank-you 🍻
I've missed you Grey. Glad I found you here.
Love your reviews!
Great video as always! You were my source for GOT content and now The Witcher. Thank you!
I love your videos and commentary! I really appreciate the time and work you put in. Thanks so much! Trying to fill that GOT void in my heart. Looking forward to more of your videos and the season 2 of The Witcher. Until then, I'll be here searching for all the details I missed. #sweetsummerchildrenforever
Very nice to see you again!
Thanks for doing this video for those of us who are confused by the different timelines. One of the best explainer vids of Witcher series on Netflix.
The glyph of Episode 5 "Bottled Appetites" does indeed show the merging of Geralt and Yennefer both physically and spiritually, however the symbol below represents the female reproductive system (uterus and ovaries) implying that Yennefer longs to repair her non-existent reproductive system so she can have a child. It is also the symbol she magically paints on her body before she engages the djinn in a power battle. :)
You're doing Witcher now?? Yay!!
Sweet Summer Juice!
It is not a sparrow. It is a swallow. You will find out this in the end of whole story
I watch a no spoiler review video before watching the series, so I was aware of the timeline being all over the place and was paying a lot of attention to it and that helped because it might be slighty confusing. You did a great job on this video as always!!!
Thank you .. that explained everything. I will watch it again. You are Great...
I really needed this juice!!
He is named Jaskier because that is his original name in the books and the series is based in the books not the game.
Thank you! I was confused after reading the first book.
Here we are again! That’s a real Christmas gift!
Team no skipp!!! Read the coments in between yall... Thank you for posting this gray awesome content as always. All things or most things witchy i like so im here for this! Also im re watching and catching on the things you talk about here.
I think queen calanthe is the same person who played Maggie the frog in GOT
Correct
And circle hits the square
This is fire! Dang girl it was on point
Gray you have some serious talent when it comes to analyzing intricate stories. Keep on doing what you do. You should really read the books if you haven't. Doesnt seem that you have?
Wuuuuuut! My juice 🧃🧃! 😃 I was waiting for this 🍿
very watchable show can't wait for season 2
He IS Jaskier. The weird thing was to translate it to Dandelion.
it translates to buttercup in Polish, so perhaps Jaskier isn't his actual name, it's just a nickname.
@@bigfudge2031 it's actually his artistic name. His actual name is Julian. But he calls himself Jaskier, because that is his "stage name".
Jaskier is actually pronounced "Yaskiyer" not "Jasker"
4:47 nobody gonna mention that weird sound?
Gray Area!
you really do know your Witcher trivia but guuuuuuuuuuuurl you're butchering those names so bad 😂😂
Missed your vids Gray
Also, this is clearly a very vast world, many ppl I'm sure are watching without subtitles and are not English speaking, so things get quite confusing at times, so maybe you could give us a tour and a little insight of different locations and cities, so it's easier to remember them :) That would make a great vid :)
I always watch with captioning because there is so much importance in the dialogue that you miss because we are used to communicating with less words and still understand.
In the emblem of episode 5 there is hidden the emblem that Yennefer used in her spell, while the whole emblem resembles the djinn's amphora and even has the plug over it. I think it symbolizes the binding of the fates but also simply the story (i.e. this whole djinn affair) and parenthood (via the fertility symbol).
It took me a while to get the timelines, but this helped even more!
Your video is awesome the series on the other hand...I’m still giving it a chance. So confusing. This definitely clarified some things. Can’t wait for season 2.
By the time Ciri first meets Dara, she had been alone for 3 days she says. So maybe a week and a half for her timeline.
Yup and in the final episode when Geralt meets the guy with the cart piling the bodies of the Cintran refugees he says they've been "dead at least a week" - they died in episode 2. So around 10-12 days in total for Ciri's timeline
Great video!
Time for the Juice!
First time I came to your channel. I really like your narrative style! When you broke off ".. some Henry VIII .." I was laughing my ass off. Subscribing!
Damn it’s going to be a long wait till season 2 😔
ET CETERA. Not ECK cetera.
Thank you so much! I didn't understand anything and you explained it! Gerald is a character I didn't understand much, I still have questions though...
I lost it when you said Filandrel instead of Filavandrel lmao.
You are the bomb!! So smart. Been doing a lot of studying girl!! I haven't gotten very far in books yet and I've only watched up to episode 3. I'm so impressed 👏👏 Didn't know about ages. Or why Geralt's hair is white. Thank you so much ❤️📚 You'll help me see more as I finish show and read. I ordered Sword of Destiny and Book 2. Almost finished The Last Wish and have book 1 Blood of Elves. Thanks again!!
Who did your intro? Love it
Gosh how much have I missed your voice ❤️
Great video i wanna know more about his mother.
how is Dandelion not old by the time Ciri is with Geralt? He was at the banquet when the curse was broken on her father. She wasn’t born yet. He should at least be a little older, but seems to be the same age regardless no?
SHON R.W he might have been around 18 at the banquet and around 30 later on
I didnt even notice how the writer was connecting all the topics in each episode like how they did for episode 2 with the elves in every timeline, loved the video 👌🏼
Best review and explanation for those who aren't familiar with The Witcher - like myself😊
I subscribed during GOT. So happy you’re providing content for this one too! Insightful as always. I read the comments. I don’t give a damn about whether there is a “n” or not. Don’t change a single thing! You do a wonderful job. ✨💫
I am going to share this video with everyone who is having trouble understanding the Witcher season 1.
Juice time!!!
Enjoying your vids and enjoy hearing from another woman. Ya know your stuff!!! New to Witcher but enjoyed the series alot!!! Knew I was missing stuff cuz I just don't know the story. Thank you. Will probably read the books before season 2. Thanks again. 😎😎😎
No joke my cats name is: Iz!!! Have had her for abit over a 1.5 yrs now.
The odds!!! 😎😎😎
When I got her no one knew her name so I named her Iz!!! Never thought of it as a name before!!!
