    I love this story, every part of it. I love how Geralt doesn't want to choose between them but he doesn't hesitate to protect the innocent people on the market and in the end, he is seen as the monster who killed all those people.

    There's only other element you didn't really touch on for long is the fact that Renfri and her gang were going to kill innocent civilians as a method for drawing out Stregabor. I can't remember the details, but they were basically going to kill one person in the market every so often until he came out to meet his death. If Geralt didn't intervene, innocent people were going to die. I don't think Geralt would have interfered with Renfri if she was just going to kill Stregabor by himself, but she was essentially a terrorist, which made her a monster. Maybe not a biological monster but she became a monster as a way of avenging her victimization. That makes her a very sympathetic monster, but still a monster.

      Wanted to say exactly this. Decent vid overall but that was a crucial part to miss. In the end Geralt didn't choose the lesser or greater evil nor does he care which is which. He did what a witcher does and slay the monster that Renfri became through her desperate and vengeful actions. Personally, I wish he'd killed Stregabor as well but I can see how that'd cause more complication.

    Even if Renfri was mutated though, it doesn't mean Stregeborn was right though. She isn't the sum of her mutations any more than Geralt is. Stregeborn will use the mutations to justify his evil, but whatever the autopsy shows, it still won't settle Geralt's guilt, just let Stregeborn absolve himself.

    Great video, as a person who has been into the games and the books for many years I love that you've started doing Witcher themed clips.
    Regarding the autopsy I disagree with you. I think that Gerralt didn't want the wizard to do it because he knew he couldn't trust him. As a Witcher he knows many wizards look down on him. They view him as a tool that they sometimes have to use but nothing more. They don't even view the withcher signs as "real magic". They think that the witchers are backwards relics of the past. Add to that their shared past - Gerralt knows that the wizard only wants to use him when it suits him. Also, Gerralt thinks the prophesy is bullshit, and that Renfri simply wanted revenge (which was understandable to some degree). Also, the wizard, who wouldn't want to lose face, would have claimed she was a monster no matter is she was one or not. He simply wouldn't have been able admit he was wrong because that would have meant that the move that was made towards the girls in the first place would have been wrong, and that would have caused political intrigue, as well as put the wizard in a bad light. So, giving Renfri's corpse to the wizard would serve no good purpose. The only thing it would do was to allow the wizard to get more "proof" to what he had been saying the whole time - that she was a monster - in order to improve his standing and save face.
    In shot, to justify the horrible crimes towards the girls through more lies.

    "Snow White and the 7 Dwarves Vibes,"
    Renfri of Craydden IS Snow White. The Witcher Universe is where all of the fairy tales come from. But in that world they are darker than how they are told in ours. In the books when she killed the Huntsman after he raped her, she joined a road side gang of 7 Dwarves who were her friends, Stregobor put a sleep spell on her and Prince Charming freed her. But then she took over his kingdom by a military coup and killed his father. And she had a Stepmother was
    "Good"
    Except she had a magic mirror from the Goddess Nehelenia (a Goddess worshiped by the Celts and Germans in real life) that showed her that one day, Renfri would destroy the Kingdom. She hired Stregobor to find out if it was true.
    So she accidentally created the future she saw in the mirror.

    For me lesser evil is about not to chose lesser evil. Geralt pick a side and decide to kill Renfris men. He is wrong. He lack knowlage to make "lesser evil" choice. In reality Stregobor refuses to leave tower evan if Renfrii kills all villagers.
    If Witcher does not show up in market everybody lives. Renfri would not kill any of villagers if she knows that it will not work. (Stregobor never leaves a tower). Renfris men lives. Renfri lives. Stregobor lives.
    In the end what anybody gains in Geralt involved in case? Seven unnecessary victims, thats all.
    In a market scene after killing her men she come back from having talk with Stregobor.
    From book:
    "'You've made your choice,' she said slowly. 'Are you sure it's the right one?'
    'This won't be another Tridam,' Geralt said with an effort.
    'It wouldn't have been. Stregobor laughed in my face. He said I could butcher Blaviken and
    the neighbouring villages and he wouldn't leave his tower. And he won't let anyone in, not
    even you.' "
    I belive point was to convinced reader to never choice the lesser evil. To never pick a side in somone els battle.

      Mireal, well put.. Gray you missed this one important bit to the Lesser Evil. If Geralt does nothing and then Renfri and her crew carry out their plan of the market place massacre. That's the Lesser Evil...and Geralt kills the crew and finally Renfri.

    Gray ... good vid on the Lesser Evil. It's a fab little short story. Who was telling the truth, Renfri or Steroborg? It's a tough position for Geralt to be in the middle and make a choice. I did feel for Renfri and what had happened to her because of the prophecy. A couple of the other posters highlighted that you missed out Renfri and her crews plan to massacre civilians in the market to draw Stregobor out of the tower as also being of the "Lesser Evil". Renfri's crew had committed a similar massacre in Tridam and that forces Geralt to pick a "Lesser Evil" by having to kill Renfri's crew and save innocent lives. Little did those innocents know how close they were to being butchered that morning.

Stregabor is a POS, definitely lesser evil. I think Geralt really liked Renfri. Can't wait for next story!!!!. These are great videos. I can sense your passion for the stories. It's awesome. Why do I feel like you completely missed the point of that story? The point is that evil creates evil, in the end Renfri was little better than Stregabor. She was ready to murder random people on the street just to get her pointless vengeance. Geralt obviously didn't care about Renfri's mutation since he was a mutant too so he knew that wasn't the key to what made her a "monster". He didn't choose Stregabor's side because he thought maybe Renfri was a mutant and so killing her was the "lesser evil" that he doesn't believe in, he chose to kill her because at that moment she was the one who was about to harm innocents. Which is simply evil as it is and that's the only thing Geralt cares about.

    • @GrayArea
      @GrayArea  4 года назад +4

      Pointless Vengeance? She was raped and her life was taken from her because a wizard said those girls were cursed. They had already killed most of them. They weren’t cursed. Geralt didn’t believe in it either. I trust his moral compass.... over the ramblings of a mad wizard.

    • @Tomviel
      @Tomviel 4 года назад +4

      @@GrayArea Vengeance is always pointless since it doesn't recover what's lost and doesn't help you to find relief. We agree on that Geralt didn't believe in the curse but then why do you think he killed Renfri? In the video you say he killed her because he thought she might be cursed and so killing her was maybe the lesser evil. That's clearly not the case, Geralt doesn't believe in the lesser evil and I'm pretty sure that neither does the writer. He only killed her to prevent her massacre, that's all.

    I haven't read the books, played the games or watched the show but I've watched some RUclips videos about the stories and clips of the show. So, I might be wrong about some or all of this. I really think it could have been that Geralt really just didn't want to see anymore good be sacrificed at all, at that point in his life. The way I understand it, this situation happened relatively early in his career and the show made it seem like he was very bitter about being a witcher at all. I think the reason he couldn't choose the lesser evil is because he didn't want to see Any evil. When Renfri was going to sacrifice town people to draw out the wizard, Geralt wasn't prepared to tolerate it (but, I think the show beautifully made a point when the little girl first met Geralt and was telling him about how she killed her dog to sell to the wizard for money for new clothes, which is a monstrous thing to do. Then, it's the little girl that Renfri almost kills. Then, the little girl rejects Geralt when he is stoned and banished.). It's also definitely an event that would induce PTSD. I would be interested to know if Geralt ended up avoiding towns that winter because of the trauma he received in Blavakin.
