Sawmill video - • SAWMILL - The Machine ...
This is Ep. 4 of the off grid build. This structure will serve many purposes which will probably change throughout time. For now it will serve as a both a place to stay and play. In this video I am fortunate to mill a huge FREE oak that I will use for flooring in the build. First as sub flooring and the remainder as finished tongue and groove flooring. It might not look like much progress but the amount of effort to go from tree to standing on the flooring is quite a bit. I also add bridging that both strengthens the walls and creates a nailing surface for the siding. In preparation for the roof framing, I placed 4X4s as top plates. This makes for a strong attachment point for the rafters and supports the gable end overhang.

I liked how you showed everything including the milling
Including showing the APEX with little twigs .
I like the way everything is done.
I concur
I compound
Totally agree. Love the process from the cutting of trees all the way to the finished product, all done from the same site.
What a beautifully done book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxo4aMFkUegBx-KHPIJlfwKPHu7kQXAR9N ! The text and the photographs are brilliant. It is thorough and genuinely informative. Joseph Truini got another winner! No one does it better! Love the Cape Cod Shed with the Blue door!
It's all great! The whole process shows how independently a structure can be built with the right skills. As long as you're not burning out on the editing process keep them coming!
I've been watching for years now, I'm an old woman who will never get to do any of the stuff you're doing but I enjoy it so much..all of it, even your sponsor adverts. You are a remarkable young man and it thrills me to watch you progress and grow. Great admiration for your work ethic, your sharing of your thought processes and your humour, the music.. they're wonderful videos. I'd be so proud to be your grandma!
I'm mesmerized when you show the milling process.
It is interesting to watch!
Love that! It was relaxing to watch.
I enjoy the milling. And I appreciate that you’re showing us what you’re doing, rather than telling us what you’re doing. I miss the last house you were working on though.
Yeah I missed the last house too I'd like to know the update and see what's going on with that if he had time that would be nice 👍
How do we know when someone is passionate about building? When he’s outside working at night by headlamp. ✨
With that music, I half expected to see you Riverdancing on your newly constructed floor :)
😂😂😂
I think the balance is perfect. I love everything about it.
I agree, I really enjoy seeing the small to medium sized clips of the whole process. A bit of the milling, the design thought/layout, site site-up, construction and the finish work. The whole process is extremely enjoyable to watch. Plus it teaches and shows people that, even though this work takes some skill level, its can and should be learned by anyone.
I’m remodeling 2 houses right now. Every time I get tired I watch one of your videos and get motivated to continue. I’m much older than you so I don’t work at night. It’s amazing to see the things you accomplish working by yourself.
Should be called the "wish"channel :
Wish I had the land
Wish I had the mill
Wish I had the tractor
Wish I had the energy
Hell, wish I had a ft of that ruff cut oak
Wish I could help/watch in person
I'm so envious, congratulations on your blessings and hard work.
I wish I have a husband like that 😧😁🤣
@@nevarez7L Pity the poor unhandy schmuck who is married to his wife’s friend.
Wish I had a husband like him
@@sharonc9259 🤣 yes so true
He should rent seats in bleachers for people to come and watch, haha.
I CAN'T SAY THIS ENOUGH. ''I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!''
Poor old oak tree, it is now doing you some good.
I think the balance between milling and construction is good. I appreciate seeing the entire process, and would love to see you build house too.
I kept thinking through the whole video that I would love to see a house being built like this too.:)
That mobile saw mill is one of the coolest ones I have ever seen!
Exactly what I was thinking. It's badass!
same here, never saw one like that before
That's a top of the line model with all the hydraulic assists for loading and rotation. I think (I could be wrong) that thing is about $40,000.
@@MrClarkisgod I wondered how much it was too and while that model (Timber King 2220) is no longer sold, the Timber King 2200 is around USD $64k.
You'd need to be milling a lot of timber to justify that, unless you're also milling for others and earning income from it (which I believe I recall him saying he does from time to time).
One thing I'd recommend is investing in some chaps, especially if you're out there cutting by yourself.
Great comment! I'd add a face guard and hard hat combo. The screened face guard doesn't fog up like safety glasses.
As well as little wood blocks cut to a point that you can hammer into the log as you cut those big logs to keep your bar from binding when you get to the bottom. It’ll save your chain and your bar lots of wear and tear
Safety first
Just the right balance. Not a lot of talking , just doing. Very enjoyable.
I think it's a great balance. I find myself skipping forward, but only because I've seen countless hours of similar stuff. For someone new, it's beneficial.
I think you’ve struck the perfect balance in all of your videos. Just keep on doing what you’re doing and we’ll keep watching. ❤️
Yes we will 👍
Your editing is on point, a good amount of everything and still entertaining.
Fell the tree, mill it, build a house ...not many folk have the skills to complete the cycle... wonderful to watch. Cheers from Scotland 🌿🌿🌿
Your audience will engage with whatever you find interesting or are passionate about. People watch this channel because of you, not because you show us too little or too much milling. Keep a simple structure; man has plan, show how man executes plan, let us bask in the glory of your results. Don't be shy about your achievements. A lot of people have a lot of good ideas, but to actually realize them, that's gravy. The glue is you talking and explaining about anything you find significant or interesting on your journey. Keep on trucking, love the channel!
In my opinion the entire process from sourcing your lumber to laying the boards was fascinating and held my attention throughout, also watching a hard working craftsman “ getting stuck in” is an inspiration . All the best from Scotland 🏴.
As a carpenter I am really enjoying this series. Thank you for all the years of fantastic content!
I like the amount of detail. There are other channels that are 100% carpentry or 100% saw milling, and you don't want to try to copy them. Watching this was 20 minutes well-spent. Thanks for taking the time and doing all the hard work and sharing it with us!
My dad built a cabin in the woods, 20 x 20, all gas operated (fridge, stove, generator, etc.). We called it the "cabbage". A cross between a cabin and a cottage. We loved it!
Everything is perfect! I could even watch longer edits of you doing this stuff.
Yes I wish they were a little bit longer too maybe get a little more in depth in what he's doing.
So far I have loved the series. I think you have done a great job showing all the steps without making them drag out too long. I honestly cant think of anything I'd change to improve upon how you're doing it currently. Keep up the great work.
I have no advice. I loved watching the entire process from the fallen tree to usable lumber. That actually was the coolest part. All your videos have been very interesting so far.
Amazing how much work one guy can do, especially a guy who knows what he's doing. 😀
He has come so far in such a short amount of time. It just goes to show how far hard work and determination can take anyone. Success is a mind set and he has it in ample amounts.
Thank you for numbering the videos. It makes it so much easier when binge watching.
Thank you for making these. 😃
I think the way you lay these videos out is perfect. I like that you take the time to breakdown your thought process, it makes the end result that much more satisfying
Don’t change a thing!!! Perfect balance, we love the detail work, and also the prep and some milling. Keep up the good work
I like seeing that Joovy Noodle behind you on the brick half-wall. It's great to see kids learning to ride bicycles or scooters. It's just the same as I have for three children.
I admire the way you and your wife approach life and I wish you both the very best. (But please be careful not to have an accident.) I have NEVER been disappointed with a video. You produce some of the very best content on RUclips.
There is something about building a dwelling with your own hands, own lumber.....I'm in awe.
I could watch that portable sawmill all day. 😀 I also loved all the tricks you showed to “straighten” raw wood. Thanks!
Everything you’re doing here is fascinating.
I'm really enjoying the format, and how you are including the 'work' that is going into the milling of the oak.
I always find the milling process very hypnotizing. I like the way it is, mixing both parts. I also like learning the basics of how a "house" gets build in the first place in North America...
I watch your videos because of how you have been mixing all your different projects. I'm also adding a comment for your haters. Nothing in your life is stopping you from doing what he does, but he has built his projects up over the years. He didn't come into this flush with cash and plop it all down at once. He has worked hard over the years to scrimp and save and build his inventory of homes. If you want this put in the effort and you can grow like he has over time. What you don't see is the extra work he does for the upkeep required for rental homes. His day does not end or begin with the video. You don't see so much work he does behind the scenes to keep his homes, pay his taxes and keep his tenants happy. A long term tenant means guaranteed income. So I applaud everything you have done to provide for yourself and your family while doing something you love!
I enjoyed the downed-tree-to-stacked-lumber process. Watching your sawmill cut is enjoyable.
If Smell-A-Vision was possible, enjoying the smell of this freshly milled timber would be off-the charts!
Please do give us the satisfaction of seeing the sheetrock in the 9000 house! That transformation is so satisfying!
You remind me of myself when I was your age. Longtime ago lol. I think you are doing a real good job! you are providing a great service for our younger generation. Keep up the good work!
The balance is just about right - for me.
Excellent music choice - as always.
Incredible camera supported explaining. The sticks were awesome. I can truly imagine the look now!!!
My great uncle built a cottage behind his parents house (which became my grandparent's and now my aunt's) for his new bride right after WW2. He had built a boat (the Terengi) to sail down the Alabama River, and the cottage has that kind of lake/boat feel. My grandmother's cousin lived in it for many years; she was an artist and built lots of dollhouses and little puppet theaters that all of us cousins loved to play with. It's a great little house (as is the family house) and your idea to build a cottage reminded me of it.
I like the balance there is for milling. Honestly, I love everything you post, and have been enjoying it for years now! I find the milling very interesting, and honestly for the stuff you're doing, it makes a lot of sense. It's cheaper, a little more work, but very rewarding in the end!
I like this series. I would have no issue watching a video twice as long with more detail. I am happy to watch them the way they are. Good content either way.
My kind of hero. We need more people who build.
I think this series is perfect. It`s a good balance of milling the lumber with the end result of building with it. I wouldn`t change it up much, if at all. This series is seeming more like a show I used to watch on PBS with a guy who worked on primitive type stuff, more olden day stuff, Yankee Craftsman or something (not the Norm show Yankee Workshop), great show and this is a great series reminding me of some of the PBS classic how to shows.
You have a good balance of milling and construction. I am always impressed by the number of skill sets you show us on your videos.
Thank god for milling your own wood and having enough for firewood. With high price of lumber/home merchandise you can't go wrong doing it yourself saving a bundle of cash. Nice progress. Be safe out there.
I do miss the other series (renovating existing homes that are in rough shape), but I'm enjoying this series as well. The practical side of me thinks it's because I'm working on my current home, and have gotten some ideas from your channel. Overall, really nice work!
Really enjoy this series. Enough detail on each aspect in the process without to much of one, and not enough on another. Keep it up.
My Dad retired from Disney starting before opening day . After growing up inside Disneyland I think you are just as good as any of those Imaginers Disney found.
I enjoy everything. Coming from a carpenter background (grandfather, father and husband), it all fits into what I already know. I understand the pleasure you get from seeing the finished product. Milling is interesting. Thank you.
seeing you go from tree to milling to building all in the same video is so cool. Ya did good :P
The balance is just right. I'm really appreciating the explanation/rationale of what you're doing as it comes along. It's awesome to have some one demystify the whole process and how things can be adjusted/changed as it goes along!
Hi, you put just the right amount of information into all your videos, you hold the attention of your audience and your videos are very entertaining, just continue the way you are
Definitely like seeing you go from the woods, to the mill, to the project itself. There’s a satisfying progression- a veritable circle of life, if you will. 🐘🦒🦓🦁
Building process is great, informative to those who don’t have building knowledge. Everyone has a different system for construction. Your house, your project, your time frame for completion
Love your chain saw technique.
I think the ratio of milling content is fine. The milling is unique, so it makes sense to feature it. I'm enjoying this series so far.
As far as your idea for building a proper residential house out of your own milled wood, I would call it 'The Forest House'.
Thanks for the thoughts.
Always thought you maintained a good balance filming all aspects. It’s enough to give people an idea but not enough to be boring or overdone.
I have enjoyed everything from the cutting and milling of tree to your construction process.
I am loving the harvesting, milling and building. I have no doubt of your capacity to utilise everything that can used, It is a real pleasure watching you create.
I think your instincts for this video series is spot on. Keep on doing what you're doing. It is awesome.
I truly liking the entire process from cutting to milling to building the actual structure. Explaining the little things is also very informative and seriously eyeopening
Seeing all the process from cutting the tree to nailing the board is great. Balance is good - milling is not too extensive. Keep it up like that.
Today's vid is GOOD balance. Love seeing tree harvest, milling (especially wet lumber shots) moving into construction. Lots of action today- well done 👍👍
I love the milling shots. The wood from that tree turned out beautifully. I am glad you showed the details like the blocking in the walls, this is informative.
I enjoyed the process totally. Preparing the tree, milling & using the wood was lovely to see. I also liked seeing the difference between fresh cut, dry & more dried wood. I would watch more detailed videos, I am thankful for the content. Very enjoyable
Love to see the more "traditional" style of building/framing. Great stuff!
I love your videos. First time I watched thru RUclips ads in a long time.
I'd love to see more milling, but you're right that it's not really the main focus of the video. You'll have many other milling videos in the future, I'm sure. I have no complaints about your videos, I just enjoy whatever you choose to share with us. It's an exciting project and I always look forward to your new postings. Great work, thank you again
It's a perfect balance of everything, wouldn't change a thing.
I think you showed just enough of the milling process to make it interesting. I'm enjoying the build and am amazed at your ingenuity at getting things done without any helper! Watching you work after dark is also interesting. ;-)
This felt like just the right amount of detail and length for the amount of work you covered in the video. Great stuff! Stay safe and God bless!
That is a slick industrial grade almost fully automated band saw sawmill. I now know how you got all that wonderful wood you been saving for furniture projects.
I think you have a good balance on milling and building. Most of your building process is doable. Keep up the good work. You seem to have great balance in your life.
Yes, it is quite a mill. Gives me access to a lot of lumber.
I think there is a nice balance of both. The fallen tree is a great tree for milling! Nice and straight! Nice boards! Enjoying this build - looking forward to the next one. I will say I miss the other house you are working on. I am excited to seeing the finished product.
Must be so satisfying for you to build something so nice after fixing all the crap. A nice break for you. I enjoyed the music and scenery. Thanks.
I think the balance between milling & framing was perfect. Keep up the good work.
Kid, I am enjoying everything. I have a deep love of milling and seeing you work up logs and get the most out of them is right up my alley. I will enjoy watching a roof go on this structure and seeing different ways people tackle the project is a part of this whole build. I will be anticipating just how you tackle that as well so hammer on and get some more of the thumbs up okay
I think you have a good balance. There's plenty of each step to get a good grasp of what you're doing.
That's hard work man! Keep it up!
It's great to see natural wood being harvest and turn into great project. To see from start is mesmerizing!!!
I’m absolutely loving this series…just keep doing what your doing….or change it up 🤷🏻♀️I’m here until the end…😉😂 love the build the music and you really look like you are enjoying it…you are an inspiration! 🙋🏻♀️🇬🇧💕jane
Really like the way you're building this, looks damn near indestructible!
You asked - I think it's a good balance between milling and building, plus how you got the tree to the mill. In addition you left in some things you could easily edited out - 9:07 & 22:22 - shows that no one is perfect - except our wives!
I love the milling process, cracking open a tree and seeing its beauty for the first time. Good balance to your videos, I love it.
Thank you for sharing this build with us. I'm not a builder, but the level of detail is just right for me. Enjoying all your videos.
The milling process was awesome, made me fall in love more with wood.: )
The video was just right. Your family must be very proud of you and your accomplishments,
I think you have pretty good judgment regarding how/what you show/tell. And it seems you are generous in responding to questions. I find it all interesting.
Thank you
I enjoy you showing some of the milling. I can smell the sawdust....oh the memories! However, I am carpenters kid so I love to watch the building process.
good content. watching you grow as an entrepreneur reminds me of someone 40 odd years ago. enjoy and build lots of memories
The balance is perfect, honesty you did a great job showing the process from tree to building.
Looking foward to the guest house idea.
It's all good. Your videos are always entertaining and filled with good process content. You remind me of my eldest son. Your mother must be very proud of you. Keep up the good work kiddo.
I like the detail of all that you have shown. Please keep showing the milling process I find that fascinating. I also would like to see more detail of your build however what you have shown is good. I like it when you explain what you are doing then just show the process at a faster speed.
What's cool is the more successful you become the cooler machinery you can buy and show us.
As long as I'm watching you work, I'm not. I'll watch anything you put out. I have the same nailer and besides it running out of nails all the time, I like it.
Can I have the make and model of the nailer?
