Remember when to get a solid red dot with 50k hours cost 600-800? Now you can get Primary Arms, Holosun, Bushnell, etc from $100-200 and it works great. I'm hoping for the same thing for NODS. I hope within the next 5 years or so we can get white phosphor bino NODS for under $2k.
Having only used the PVS 7B's and the PVS 14's I really prefer the monotube. When it came to moving around in MOUT and in rural patrols I appreciated the ability to not ruin my natural night vision in both eyes which is pretty damn useful in an operational environment. Also I really wish they would have issued counterbalance weights for our helmets in the marines, that would have really helped with the constant head and neck aches from having the nvgs hanging out the front.
The older I get and the more night time trips to the bathroom I need I think it's time for night vision. Do they have magnified versions so I can get a proper hold?
I took an old Soviet tank drivers night vision set (retails around $250 depending on which warehouse you get it from though the price can vary as high as 1000, I picked mine up at a surplus store that shipped from Czechoslovakia For $250) and normally it's meant to be plugged into a main power supply on the tank, However. They have a switch that allows you to select 24 volt / 12 volt and it will run off a simple 9 volt battery. so I've got mine set up with a toggle switch for on / off. an IR flashlight and laser light combo. it's not ideal but for less than $500 it's a pretty damn good cost effective poor man's night vision that works better than it sounds, some straight up metro Exodus type shit but believe me it works 😂
Thanks for this video. I'm getting ready to make my first decent NV purchase, and this was very helpful. This in addition to SilentSolutions videos on understanding spec sheets have been a huge help. Starting out with a (relatively) lowly thin flmed Gen 3 PVS-14 setup because I'm not ready to shell out the coin for dual tubes or filmless mono, but any NODs are better than no NODs.
Great video I just subscribed. I fancy myself as a gun guy for over 35 years, but I was clueless when it comes to night vision until I started my research, still very new to it and need to learn more but more informed now. Your video and knowledge is much appreciated. In the beginning of my education, I was leaning heavy to PVS 14 monocular, I'd set my budget around $3500 to $4000, as time went on and I looked more into NOD's I changed my mind. Your saying buy once cry once is so true. I just ordered a turnkey package from US Night Vision (told them I ended up at their website because of this video). It's the day after Thanksgiving and I called US Night Vision and the owner John answered the phone, that says a lot right there and gave me piece of mind that I wouldn't be left high and dry if I needed product support if I purchased NOD's from them. I ended up buying Gen 3 dual tubes articulating green phosphorus with bump helmet set up. The white phosphorus was out of my new budget. Yes I had to spend more than the 4k, ended up spending 6k but buy once cry once.
15:50 Another good option to this is using a canteen holder on the right/left upper chest of an IBA with 5-50 cord attached to the NVG and the canteen holder. You can store NVG in canteen holder on IBA and if it falls off your helmet the 5-50 cord is only aprox. 12 inches. Saves your neck and saves your ass from an Article 15.

@@VT560T yeah you can, not that hard. But if you're planning to end up having to do that anyway, you might as well start out buying a cheap used tube kit, and installing a new intensifier yourself. Last time I tried to price that out I think I came up with like $1,500 for a Gen 3 PVS-14

I need a pair for my airsoft team meet this Saturday. Mommy said she would buy them on eBay if I got a real job and moved out of the basement . Yeah right take me to court mom!
I don't know squat about night vision. It wasn't standard police issue, and wasn't even part of SWAT back when I was a blue guy. Fast forward, more schooling, and now, I'm in a psychiatry practice so those days are gone. But if I were still a young single guy on this income, I'd buy all kinds of cool Garand Thumb stuff.
Hey bro, you put out some really informative reviews about gear n training. I watch some as I am a ole paradog n retired. I run with a wilcox g24 I think, n ITT PVS14 +P both platforms helmet n weapon mounts. Then generally go with a Trijicon REAP IR thermal primary on my LWRC SPR M6. They stay retired in my war chest most days. But if we ever go hot with shtf, I can atleast guard my gkids. But I am no Rambo. One thing I'd say for veterans who might be deployed in the sh** box. Foreign soldier here, yet trained with the Big Wolves n SOFs. Keep your sh** tucked well an Always make sure you n yours did the shake down before each mission. Rarely ever mentioned an few carry. We were issued black jacks n various defensive knives. I'd mount my black jack behind either my helmet or tucked into my load out harness. Only makes sense imho, as it's a last ditch tool if you find yourself on the dirt. Its saved my own life 2x n others as well. You go through enough doors, you'll find yourself blindsided on your back. It happens guys.
Ok, so the big take away here; panoramic is out, and binocular is out. Mono might be in, but then I've got to have a bunch of other crap so I'll probably just stick with a flashlight, LOL.
If you're gonna go the flashlight route, use a variable brightness blue led, dial it all the way down until the beam seems black and white, and that will let you navigate terrain at night without being seen at distance because blue light scatters the easiest and is also the color least visible to night adjusted eyes
if you have home defense indoor in get a gen 1-2 pvs 14. They can be had for between $200-$1000. They will work just fine, and the person breaking in will not have NVG. Puts you at a large advantage compared to them, which is all you need.
I just traded my Panobridged 14's for a pair of Nivisys NVAG-6 (ANVIS-6), bridged 14's is just too front heavy on a ballistic helmet, and a bonus to running the ANVIS-6s is that specifically from Nivisys they're approved for aviation use by the FAA (nice to have that option having my rotorwing pilot rating)
I love John Lovell he's a great guy that I've learned much from I wish I could afford to travel and attend his classes he is one person I watch a lot besides you because you have a different unique view on all the gear, and with realistic prices
Man, I loved the discussion on WP or just ole green. Before I bought my NVGs, I worked with both. The WPs I never could get used to or comfortable with. I think it has more to do with my age/generation. I didn't hate the WP, but gave me a headache. Using dual PVS14s, Mod Armory articulating bridge, and G24 mount. Great presentation, G-thumb. Glad to see you out of that doctor shmock.
In the usmc i had a pvs 14 that was 1 week younger than me, hated that thing lol. I just got my first rig a wp pvs 14 and i love it to death im definitely digging the higher specs of a modern unit plus wp is easier on my eyes over hours of use. Fred Latin Medic you can buy a PVS-7 for like 1500$ and a PVS-14 for like 2000$ or you can buy gen1+ NVGs for like 300$ gen 1 is good for airsoft, night navigation, sightseeing, path finding, and just general use at night.

This has been a good exchange. Solid job, guys.
At least you can afford them so you must be doing something right.
The older I get and the more night time trips to the bathroom I need I think it's time for night vision. Do they have magnified versions so I can get a proper hold?
G Lewis OMG!!! You made me spit coffee all over my key board.🤣🤣
Practice without nvg will help you get hold while using nvg 😂
G Lewis 😂😂🤣
Training is soo important. The first time using night vision was quite difficult moving through grass, brush, and mountain trains.

Which NVGs do you recommend for air soft? I wanna make sure I get it on my birthday/Christmas list. Mom has to save up.

Title: “basics of night vision”
*Proceeds to pull out the most advanced/ expensive nvg available.*
John Lovel is a great guy. Glad to see some cooperation
This guy has lost or knows someone that nearly lost SI
Wow, your mom is way cool to let you shoot airsoft in the basement like that. How'd you get it to sound so lifelike?

@@VT560T yeah you can, not that hard.
But if you're planning to end up having to do that anyway, you might as well start out buying a cheap used tube kit, and installing a new intensifier yourself.
Last time I tried to price that out I think I came up with like $1,500 for a Gen 3 PVS-14

My pants are around my ankles right now.
It happens guys.
gen 4 is going to be digital and a game changer for night vision forever
Great informative content, great to finally get the idea of owning night out my head. At a stretch I could put the bracket on the credit card
I was being facetitious more than anything and only had indooor, home defense in mind, but thanks for the insight. Good information there.
BrianWORD ...
if you have home defense indoor in get a gen 1-2 pvs 14. They can be had for between $200-$1000. They will work just fine, and the person breaking in will not have NVG. Puts you at a large advantage compared to them, which is all you need.
If someone breaks in you don’t have time to put on night vision
bro this guy's max prestige on call of duty
I just traded my Panobridged 14's for a pair of Nivisys NVAG-6 (ANVIS-6), bridged 14's is just too front heavy on a ballistic helmet, and a bonus to running the ANVIS-6s is that specifically from Nivisys they're approved for aviation use by the FAA (nice to have that option having my rotorwing pilot rating)
I love John Lovell he's a great guy that I've learned much from I wish I could afford to travel and attend his classes he is one person I watch a lot besides you because you have a different unique view on all the gear, and with realistic prices
Wow these 4 cylinders are amazing imagine the batteries so much power in such small size
We're all different whats important is getting what works for you!
