The Last of Us Part I
R.I.P Annie Wersching. Her performance in this game was masterful. She will be dearly missed. She made Tess feel real.
I'm still shock. This game and her time in Marvel through Runaways was what made me love her. RIP Annie Wersching.

So damn good in everything she did. An absolute shame.
Just last week her character Tess just died, and now, this is so tragic 💔 RIP thoughts to her family and friends. This must have been so very difficult on them.
🙏🙏
The line “we’re shitty people” always stuck with me. She wasn’t a shitty person she was a survivor. I didn’t think that made her shitty.
"There's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me"
Such a great line. The show expands on a lot of things from the game and I do appreciate it, but also I love the subtleties within the game. It tells so much with so little and lets your imagination fill in the blanks.
It's a great line to show the player whatever they may think about their bond is true. It isn't forced and it's kind of the low hanging fruit to bring it up in the argument to force Joel's hand.
Tlou is probably the best when it comes to dialogue and nuance. They give you the perfect amount, where it doesn’t feel like they’re throwing exposition at you, but it’s just enough to fill in the blanks. It’s such a joy to watch this and part 2s cutscenes.
Tess’s death is the most outright tragic one in the first game. She chose to give up her own life, not just because she doesn’t want to become a runner, but in the hopes that Joel and Ellie will go to the Fireflies and help create a cure, in order to delude herself into thinking that her life meant something.
But because Joel prevented the cure, her death was absolutely meaningless like she feared
@@TheWeekendWarrior490 Ehh you're sure ? Always thought that Ellie was the only one
@@TheWeekendWarrior490 I’m not sure if that’s correct. At least I’ve never heard or seen the game make any reference to that happening.

RIP Annie Wersching 🥺
🥺
Not that I don't think the show version of this was good, but I really liked that line here where she says "Look, there's enough here that you have to feel some sort of obligation to me." I think that really summed up their relationship well in the game, where it was made a lot more subtle than them just outright cuddling in the first episode. It was nuanced and only hinted at; not necessarily romantic in the normal sense, but something intimate and much closer than between anyone else.
Yes! This! Implying a strong connection takes her out of the “obligated romantic interest” it gives her more depth.
The show pushed the romantic implication much harder.
The other part I disagree with was the “kiss of death” moment. It kind of took away from the bravery of her last stand. Like, why have her last moments be a loss of bodily autonomy?
Do we ever find out what happened to Sarah's mom? Joel never talks about her.
@@drummerguy438 My guess is that she's already infected and the thing growing inside of her must have made her doing that. Or else it's just her weak moment.
Yeah, I thought Tess’ last scene was better in the game. Makes it much more explicit that Joel has to continue the journey for her and she goes down fighting
Agreed. Ironically the game depicted a much more complex “adult” version of their relationship than the show did.
3:39 My favorite moment in this scene and the game as a whole. Just the way you see Tess composing herself for what's to come. Love how genuine that looks.
Rest in peace to our queen Annie Wersching for lending us her voice and creating one of the most iconic characters in gaming.
I must say, this actually feels more like a movie than the other versions. Now, I played the game on PS4, not PS3. But the fact this version doesn't always include a black screen before a cutscene, or maybe it does sometimes, I don't know, it feels a lot more like a immersive experience through the overgrown and apocalyptic U.S

they made her ugly af in the remaster
I think the dialogue in the game was better than the show, but the sacrifice she made in the show was better than the game.
When Tess takes that last deep breath, that's what gets me every time.
I like how the game doesn't romanticize Tess's death. It's the cost of doing business in a world that's gone to hell like this. Death is just an everyday thing. You can still feel the emotion, but what's done is done. Tess isn't quivering or crying. She's already accepted her circumstances. She doesn't even go down in a cheesy blaze of glory. She's gunned down like an animal. Humans are far worse than anything nature produces.
she killed 2 of them before they killed her, I'd say that qualifies as a blaze of glory. Not a Nick Cage explosion on a bridge type glory but 2 guys ain't nothing.
@GrapeApe88 but I want to know she kill them from shooting or she was already "zombie"
Nature produced humans
That's true seeing her body is the saddest thing ever 😭

the show is doing this game absolute justice, the changes that they make do not take away from the game at all but instead add depth and stay true to the story it is amazing never in my life have i scene an adaptation so spot on they even use the same lines. Bravo to everyone working on the show.
Yeah I'm really enjoying the show too. One detail I find strange in the show that they changed is Ellie isn't really wanting to be around Joel at all. Here she expresses gratitude, even though they're being paid she knows they're keeping her safe. But in the show she seems really rebellious, and at the end of ep. 2 she even yells at joel that she doesn't want to go with him. I'm guessing they're doing it that way to leave more room for a relationship to develop, but still feels like a weird choice given the circumstances they're in
@@tomoates8568 yeah considering it’s a show they will have more time / scenes to build their relationship, it is still early on
Thats naughty dog for u unlike halo and the witcher .
Eh i feel like they doing an ok job cuz to me every emotional moment so far seems rushed and acted out far worse than in the game.
I disagree. None of the emotion hits the same in the series and the changes they have made make it feel more generic. A hivemind really??
As someone who has never played the game but watched cutscenes and started watching the TV show, Rest easy Annie wersching.

R.I.P. Annie Wersching
(1977-2023)
R.I.P
After Joel and Ellie, Tess is easily my favorite character in the whole of the two games. Annie Wersching made Tess real and somehow made a whole ass redemption in all of 4 hours of game play feel so genuine. She will be dearly missed and her legacy as a masterful actor should not go understated. Thank you Annie
I can't believe the voice actor who played Tess passed away. Cancer is awful. Screw cancer for ever existing!
i can't believe they changed Tess's face in the remaster to look like a 60 year old meth addict
The facial expression is perfectly accurate!
no its not. first of all, they made tess ugly in the remaster. there was no reason to change her original look.
Anyone else just watch episode 2? When the fungus went into Tess’s mouth it gave me goosebumps. So nasty!!! I actually like how the show portrayed the urgency to end Tess’s life in the show over the game.
Yeah, watching her hands shaking, and her rushing Joel and Ellie out before they could say goodbye really showed how quickly you can turn if bitten near the brain.
TLoU the game really emphasize on man v man, like the infected are only a small obstacle along the way, but in the show it's really just man v fungus, they make it that the infected and fungus are very very dangerous enemies, we can see that on the game we're fighting FEDRA while on the show they fought a horde of infected
i prefer she goes out this way than the fungus, like WTF she should of went out fighting and not like a scaredy cat
@@Chad-bc9viI just watched the post episode interview and the creators state they want it to focus on the human to human story rather than just a zombie apocalypse. We’ll see how it turns out
@@liljdub08 well the story is of course human to human, I'm talking about the enemies, uhh the encounter, you can see that they change it from Tess sacrificing herself to a group of FEDRA soldiers to a horde of infected
Came here to refresh my memory after tonight’s episode on HBO. No wonder the whole last part didn’t ring a bell, it’s completely different lol. Not a bad thing at all, just a different take on the same event which I can appreciate.
It's because they make the infected far more dangerous in the show, I mean some of them are connected with one another?? One small mistake and you'll bring a horde to you? Yikers, I bet nobody wanted to go outside, not even FEDRA, like in the game
But I love it, they make it that every encounter with an infected far more scary and tense :)
@@Chad-bc9vi yeah I'm interested to see how they take it, I was sad there are no spores but bringing in the hive mind capabilities of fungus and having patches be connected for miles could be really interesting.

Without taking into account the... Uhm... Kiss, this is so much better. The dialogue is just superb in the original. "guess what, we're shitty people Joel" just conveys that desperation to find redemption in her final minutes so much better. "this is not us" It really shows just how absurd it is for Joel to take this task on. I'm glad the show is not a 1 for 1 retelling of this story, it would never surpass or even match the original if that's all it was. But I hope that if they keep reprising big moments like this that they at least consider more of what made the original so impactful.
I think that Tess’s death in the show was done better than it was in the game. It did a better job of portraying a sense of urgency and sacrifice. Whereas in the game, all she did was stall for time against for force that Joel could’ve taken out himself. They’re both great nonetheless, and I appreciate the twist they put on the show in order to keep things fresh for veterans of the story.
I think right now as of episode 2, I prefer the game performances because the chemistry is 100% there. I think that the show's characters are written darker, more jaded. I think both Joel and Ellie will get to their fun, relationship building moments for sure, but it's a slower build in the show. I respect the show's choice to make Joel and Tess' relationship a bit more of a "we don't love each other, but we need eachother" instead of a real romance. They really want Joel to be 100% emotionally detached from everything when he finally starts to care about Ellie.
@@dylandog1289 idk i felt the complete opposite. I think Tess and Joel's relationship being more apparent is indicative of him being more vulnerable in the show. Additionally almost right away they had that scene where he had a flashback of Sarah when they were being held at gunpoint. His reaction was a violent one, but it was born out of a protective instinct that I don't think was quite earned yet.
@@helloruiz think from a practical perspective given that Joel eventually does pretty much take everyone in the capitol on you're not wrong. This was much more clearer in the way that her sacrifice served the story. But as far as her trying to convince Joel to take Ellie to Tommy and revealing she had been bitten I just didn't feel it as deeply. Idk maybe I've watched that scene play out so many times it just feels weird watching a different version of it, but it feels like every line in this exchange betrays a little nuance in what's going on in everyone's heads. Here's one example: in this version she says this is her last stop, Joel reaches out towards her and she backs away not wanting to risk infecting Joel. This is what tips Ellie off and then she says that Tess is infected. In the show Tess says she's staying (which given the context i don't think is as good of a line) and Ellie out of nowhere says that Tess is infected. Joel looks confused and then Tess goes towards Joel and he's the one that backs away scared of getting infected by Tess. Subtle difference but it changes the tone for me. And just like that one there's a bunch of small changes that don't really make for a scene that moves me as much.
@@helloruiz delusional
Tess looked so young in the ps3/ps4 version. This is a better look for her, you can see her facial expression worn with stress more clearly hence why she looks slightly wizened. Tess is a lovely character, too bad she died so early.
This scene is SO much better acted than the show.
The show is good enough, but it did not live up to this scene.
I agree. I think the show is OKAY, but not up to the performances the mo-cap actors did for the game. I realize it's a different medium and maybe some changes had to be made, but I think they did a better job acting for the game. The TV Tess was just not Tess. (And Sarah was too old, I think).
A lot of the dialog in the show seems kind of rushed and it's just like they're reading their lines. Didn't like the Ellie immune reveal, either. Or when Joel was lying on the couch and Ellie asked what he was doing and he said "killing time." There were more pauses in the game dialog and it seemed like they just rushed through the TV dialog of the same scenes, if you get what I'm saying.
@@mythra7174 completely get it.
Him saying "It is over, Tess!", in the game, hit much harder than "Tess, it's over.", in the show. The game seemed to have more conviction, but the lines have overall been good.
I think it's just because Pedro has a softer speaking voice. I interpret his version of Joel as someone who is incredibly broken, less emotional, and tired. Not a bad thing, just a different take.

@@parchemiarz in one she goes out whimpering as she lets some infected stick tendrils down her throat. The other she goes out gun in her hand, fighting till the very last moment tooth and nail
I like the pause before Ellie says Tess is infected. In the show she says it too fast, and what about Joel’s “IT IS OVER TESS” line?! So much better in the game but the show is pretty good overall
Yeah, I think that Anna Torv has turned in the best performance in the show so far, followed closely by Pedro (Troy's "It is OVER Tess!!!" is hard to beat). Bella has had some good moments, but she still seems a bit nervous acting out the part. She definitely seemed more relaxed and less "rehearsed" in episode 2. Can't wait for the Bill episode, Offerman is PERFECT as Bill.
I think in the show they are going for an ellie who is a tad bit trigger happy like a coping mechanism or somw sort
In the game she gave the feeling that she was getting tired of the whole thing ( knowing her past and all that)
Imo they both work depending on how they will handle it
@@dylandog1289 if anyone would survive in a zombie apocalypse, I fully trusted that it would be Ron Swanson
There’s a lot of lines in the show I noticed they take from the game and say it too fast. Especially with Joel. Hope I’m not the only one who noticed that
Spoilers because we all know why we’re here:
I cannot stand the way they treated Tess in the show. How they changed her death from defiant and in her own power to some cringe-out, voyeuristic garbage. Yeah, the “kiss” could be a neat behavior to explore for the infected. But not with our Tess, even though our time with her was short, she’s one of the most poignant female characters in the game (besides Ellie) and someone that a lot of players definitely connected with. Her going down in a gun fight shows us just how resilient and downright damn stubborn she was, killing at least two or three guards as a testimony to how lethal she is. In the show, seeing her freeze up when the infected approach, seeing her practically being violated while pulling off what essentially boils down to a simple trick that anyone can do, it’s so insulting to her character.
Tess fucking deserved better in the show, at least the game knew how to give her a proper death that correlated to her character.
Edit: Came back here and I find out Annie Wershing had passed away, fucking hell. I will always love that she gave us Tess, that she gave us the actual badass woman (that Abby failed to be). God bless her soul and I hope her family is doing ok.

@@geneInMyveins72 The thing is that I don’t think the show is bad or awful. I just feel like narratively, writing the death like that just doesn’t suit Tess. And it makes me a little worried for how they might handle Henry and Sam’s deaths.

@@fortnight3138 I don’t blame the actress in the show, but she just didn’t give me “hardass” vibes the way game Tess did. a lot of mixed opinions in these comments about which version did it better which is interesting. I think the game did a better job of making it clear she was infected before Ellie says it, but I like that it's a huge mob of infected instead of FEDRA soldiers who suddenly show up. They also set up the new "the fungus can alert other nearby infected to your location" thing and then followed through with it here so that was neat. They did Tess, dirty. She is a bad ass and they showed her dying in a freeze panic. Nope.
Joel seems less reluctant to take Ellie here than in the show. Like he already cares more about her in light of his daughters death. Pascal is a good actor but they should've made him less apprehensive to the idea getting her to safety at first.
but in show he almost kisses her here they are too far from each other
This was way better than the HBO series. Same with Sara's death.
So far they havent been able to top any of the performances from the game.
The show runners keep changing little things to make it better, or add depth but I feel like they are doing the opposite.
nah it had a bigger impact in the show, the reason the did it this way in the game is because you have to keep the player playing of course so you bring some enemys to fight.
@Luca-van-Amerongen they brought enemies to fight in the show too. A bunch if them. They didn't have to fight the guys if they did it the same way as the game, they could of just ran.
I respect your opinion though I disagree with it 100%. They changed the dialog up a bit in too in that scene. As I played the game several times over the years and replayed it in anticipation for the show I think of the scene as it's equivalent is playing out in the show. In my mind, the game did it better.
But thats my opinion.
@@matthewdh123 Well look at this way, you can always enjoy watching/playing the game and it can just be fun to watch show for the differences to which gives some extra surprises to people who have played the games too. In HBO version I had a feeling that Joel agrees not go back home, because the plot says so. Here I actually believe he made the choice. Ellie is far more likeable - she seems to understand how serious is the situation and appreciate the risk Joel and Tess are taking, she looks to be genuinely sorry for Tess. In the series she's acting more like a smart ass high school student that was forced to do some annoying chore. Altogether the scene is far more emotional. That shows what a masterpiece this game is - it's better even in aspects that are generally consider inferior in games vs live action...
Tess fighting the infected vs the soldiers was a better decision IMO
HBO version?
@@wtconroe879 HBO bruh
RIP. Loved how they used your likeness in TLOU Part 1 for PS5.
R.I.P Annie Wersching 😔
Wow the motion capture actress just died in RL
R.I.P Annie Wersching
I miss Joel's "oh christ" when she shows him as it wasn't in the show.
Atleast in the show Tess actually achieved something, here she gets killed off screen
Delusional
@@alessandroofthemediterranean "she took out 2 of our men" vs she fucking destroys a horde
@@parchemiarz "fucking destroys a horde" just feels like a Walking Dead cliché. Being gunned down so easily makes it feel a bit more grounded.
@@aceofspades477 I agree, that’s what made the deaths in the games so impactful. All of this buildup and drama in the show just takes me out of it tbh
Game feels more realistic and gritty, even with the performances. The kiss just took me out of it personally it was so extra
It wasn't a kiss. It was to spread the infection quicker.
Instead of arguing over which version of this scene is better, why can't we just appreciate both? Both are great in their own ways.
No coz the game version is much better anyways
The TV scene don't even come close to this. It feels more realistic.
Watching after episode 2 for comparison and both are as heart wrenching as I thought
Didn't know her death scene is more sad than the show she's gunned to death... RIP Annie Wersching...
Rest in Peace Annie Wersching 😔🙏🏽
Those who played the game before the show are legends
As far as I'm concerned there's only "the last of us".
No part I or Part II.
Just the last of us.
The show is very very good, but this scene is just so so much better in the game. I just love how the dialogue plays out, and the look of acceptance she gives when Ellie and Joel leave has just stuck with me ever since I played the last of us for the first time, it says so so much about her character. It's small, but it's a shame we didn't get that in the show.
And obviously the kiss is pretty funky (Obviously it's not an actual kiss, I get it was transferring the infection) I liked her dying off screen. Just hearing the gun shots stopping. It's haunting and much more effective, at least to me.
I liked her death in the show a LOT more, it was miles more tragic. That infected kiss, is so beautiful but gross and terrifying at the same time. The game death is just "bland", and dying by normal humans and guns, idk if it is because they are pixels and is not the same as watching real actors/people acting, but i find it very bland in the game.
Her death in the show had more emotional meaning towards the audience. Felt more heartfelt on the show than the game. The character development of Tess from episode 1 and 2 and how she ended her life on episode 2 had more meaning in my opinion. This is just my opinion.
@@h.l.4723 yeah. In the game she is left there, and you continue playing. Ellie doesn't even react until a minute later and is not that emotional. In the show everything was instant and the emotion these actors put in the scene was just heartbreaking.
@@h.l.4723 I respect that. I just felt like we got that same character development in the game, and it felt a little more grounded and less overly dramatic (pun intended 😎😎😎😎)
@@LFNZE fair. hmm I felt like the animators did a fantastic job, especially with this part one remake, I got all the emotion w/o the overly dramatic explosion and gentle zombie "kiss" but it was gross and hit just as hard. I think I just prefer the more grounded version in the game. Also I wouldn't say it's bland to just die by humans. I feel like one of the themes of the last of us is that people can be uglier than zombies sometimes. Just in the last episode I feel like Sarah's death isn't bland because she got shot by a human
Man I don't know. HBO Joel and Ellie just doesn't hit it for me. Joel doesn't give off the hardened survivor feel in the show like his game counterpart. He's a little....mmm...for lack of a better word, softer? Maybe it's his voice? Troy Baker who voiced Joel in the game had a deep commanding voice full of passion and emotion. The show Joel just sounds flat. Sometimes it almost feels like he doesn't believe a word that's coming out of his own mouth. There's just no conviction. And Ellie...ugh...the game Ellie is innocent as a kid should be, but street smart and spunky. The HBO Ellie sometimes hits it but not always. I don't know.
I agree, TV Show is like a watered down version of the game.
Tess's character model looks so damn real.
I do think Tess' sacrifice in the show is more impactful but the game still executed this scene better. From the revelation that she's infected to her final words. I thought the show was gonna go for a World War Z moment where the zombies ignore her cus she's already infected but they really didn't need to have Tess make out with a zombie in her last moments....
Yeah the 20-like tries with the lighter were also a bit much. Does that even happen in real life? Won't you after the 5th try think that it's empty and try something else..? I didn't get why she wouldn't just pick up a hand grenade either. Those were scattered all around her. Imo the TV scene was awful, and not very believable.
This hits differently now. RIP Annie
