As I am former Air Force Special Ops, I listened with interest at his stories and smelled BS. Most people dont know that Special Ops in all branches can be kind of boring day to day, and most operators will tell you it"s a lot like being a fireman (Everyone wants to know about the fires but not about washing fire trucks, doing paperwork and rolling up hoses...) Maybe 2 percent of your time is spent doing something really exciting or fun. Its not really like the Charlie Sheen movie...but this guy claimed all sorts of exploits. So I asked him one day "Where'd you do your jump training? Ft. Huachuka or Ft. Sumter?" He chose Ft. Sumter. Neither are correct, and a SEAL would have immediately picked up on it. In fact, Ft Sumter closed a few years after the Civil War. So I pulled him aside during a break and called him on it. He never said another word about it in my class. But the twist to the story is that an actual SEAL was seated two rows over from him and never uttered a word about it until the last day. He said he had been recording the liar's stories with his phone for laughs back at his unit. Classic.

I was teaching at a major university in Florida when a student in one of my classes claimed to be a SEAL. He didnt know that I was active duty at the time. As I am former Air Force Special Ops, I listened with interest at his stories and smelled BS. Most people dont know that Special Ops in all branches can be kind of boring day to day, and most operators will tell you it"s a lot like being a fireman (Everyone wants to know about the fires but not about washing fire trucks, doing paperwork and rolling up hoses...) Maybe 2 percent of your time is spent doing something really exciting or fun. Its not really like the Charlie Sheen movie...but this guy claimed all sorts of exploits. So I asked him one day "Where'd you do your jump training? Ft. Huachuka or Ft. Sumter?" He chose Ft. Sumter. Neither are correct, and a SEAL would have immediately picked up on it. In fact, Ft Sumter closed a few years after the Civil War. So I pulled him aside during a break and called him on it. He never said another word about it in my class. But the twist to the story is that an actual SEAL was seated two rows over from him and never uttered a word about it until the last day. He said he had been recording the liar's stories with his phone for laughs back at his unit. Classic.

Anyway, I was talking about my jump school experience toward the end of class and the SEAL casually mentioned his jump school - with the fake SEAL sitting right there. So I asked him a couple of things that only a real SEAL woud know and he nailed it. You could practically walk on the air in that classroom when everyone realized fake SEAL had been outed. Serves him right.
