Hey guys! Thanks for watching the video! You may have noticed that I didn’t talk about the operating range of any of the units. I left it out because I think antenna placement and RF coordination have the biggest impact on wireless range, intermodulation distortion, and dropouts. Also, the unit’s range is largely dependent on line of sight which is highly impacted by if you DO or DO NOT have an external antenna on a stick (above the audience or performers head) and a distribution unit. I should have put this in the video but failed to do so. Sorry about that! Again, thanks for watching! PS: Axient didn't fit into the budget for this video so more to come later!
This has got to be one of the best comparisons of all of the Shure wireless models! I would like to see a follow up explanation of the different capsules. Thanks so much.
I think for small productions SLXD is the best value as most artists would still be happy to work with it since it's Shure (Audio-Technica costs less and has more features, but a lot of people don't trust it), you can get all of the cool capsules, even the newest Nexadyne, it's scalable and networkable, dual reciever saves you on antenna and power combiners, and the price is great.
Update on the Nexadynes. They have been pretty good. Only have used them on MC. Closest thing I can compare it to is a KSM8, has that mid range build up like one but definitely has less stage bleed compared to a KSM8
@@calebbarrera8990 Did you get the cardioid or supercardioid version? I wanted to upgrade the handhelds at a local theatre but concerned the supercardioid will have too tight of a pickup pattern for most emcees.
Been a Shure/Sennheiser wireless user and tester myself, and this has to be the best comparison video I have ever seen. Hope to see you do a review of the Axient Digital wireless series, as well as Sennheiser wireless system comparison.
We have BLX4R with Sennheiser G4 (recently upgraded to Sennheiser EW-D). The BLX4R has been Phenomenal for us in all areas. I'm only now looking at the SLXD
Great video! I was torn between the blxr and the slx due to budget reasons. But seeing this video I think I'm gonna go with the slx. Seems more of a long run system, and as my mom always says, poor people buy expensive stuff (meaning they buy things that are more reliable that last longer and you pay much once, and not often)
Would suggest spending a bit more effort on discussing the difference in setup, particularly scan types and scan results distribution (networking). I share your concern with the QLXD segmented display but as you mentioned the RF and audio quality are similar. I'm personally preferrable to the ULXD system, but for a considerable price increase. For those interested, you can probably find the video demoing the ULXD high-density mode on RUclips, where we showed members of the audio press how many transmitters can operate in a single band. An introduction to how each of these system work (or not) with Wireless Workbench for frequency coordination. Good job overall! Too bad the Axient system is pricey for the "average" user! :)
This is good feedback man and I appreciate it! I would have loved to get more into the networking and distro side. Maybe in another video. I love the ULXD too and use it on almost every one of my jobs. Thanks for watching!
For my rig I went with Sennheiser because I like the sound of their mic capsules better... But when it comes to radio technology, Shure rules the roost! This is a great comparison of Shure's wireless systems.
Yeah, in hindsight I wish I would've included it in the video if not to only talk about how different it is than the rest of the units. Thanks for watching man!
I had the BLX2 PG58 wireless microphone systems, now they are at the church I run sound at, we use it in the multi purpose room, they work well for the purposes that we need them for. I have the SLXD4 SM58 wireless system.
The BLX is fantastic choice for something like a multipurpose room. I think Shure did a really nice job with the SLXD at that price point. Really good system.
@@SilverCreekAudio I’ve heard that the SLXD is really the only option if you need a lower cost wireless microphone system for doing a live sound event, the BLX systems are prone to dropouts.
I think that's accurate. The BLX system, in my opinion, is designed for low pressure situations while the SLXD can stand the pressure of a live environment much better.
Yep dropouts blx its just not a pro mic i have the slxd not a single issue just rock solid. I do like sennheisers but even the ew-d can dropout and this a digital system.
This is a great comparison video! Looks like PGX didn't make the cut, though. I have two of the dual SLXD systems with SM58, and they've been rock solid. I'm getting ready to replace all of my Audio-Technica wireless mics that I use with headsets for a high school theatre with Shure SLXD + SLXD1, looking to run 16 mics at once. For the bang for your buck, SLXD is, in my opinion, a good option.
One that everyone sleeps on more on the budget side is the PGXD system. It’s 900mhz instead of 2.4g like the usual cheaper digital stuff so it doesn’t get much interference from wifi and bluetooth. You can get systems used these days for around $300. Interchangeable capsules and it runs on AAs. IMO it’s the perfect intro kit for karaoke / small parties / small bands. Hopefully Shure comes out with something to compete with Senn EW-D[x], in particular the dual channel per half-u rack unit. Senn’s on-camera EW system is also amazing and Shure doesn’t have a good answer to that just yet. I’m a big time Shure guy generally but the EW-DX just had all the features I was looking for in a dual mic compact setup. Running Earthworks SR5117 capsules on it too. Very happy with the results.
Shure is nice, but I've used Sennheiser EW for years and I've never had an issue. But I've always thought of trying out the Shure (since I use the GLXD wireless for guitar) This video is awesome! I've been debating getting the SLXD. Thanks!!!
I just wished he would have changed transmitters from the BLX2 as he was speaking on the different systems. But this was a great comparison video. He definitely helped me make a decision on what unit type to choose for my church.
Thanks for watching dude! I do switch transmitters in every section of the video. They're just all SM58s and don't sound radically different (in my opinion) overall.
@SilverCreekAudio Good deal with them sounding exactly the same. With the difference not being too dramatic, then I can actually look at a lower model than the1 I was thinking of at first. Less features, but still sounds good. Thank you for making this video!
I have the BLX24r, and the SLX24, mic tone the SLX is smoother and a very even almost compressed response, tons of clarity without being harsh , very natural for speaking voice. The BLX sounds great it sounds like a Shure no complaints. But, the BLX in a ceremony crowd and or with overcast weather it drops in and out if the mic isn’t within like 15 feet from the receiver. A terrible experience . I have not had that issue with the SLX. No drop outs, tons of range. I really feel confident turning that on. One thing to note is it won’t sound or perform great if the speaker holds the mic at their belly and u gotta crank the volume to hear them (the worst lol) but if u know anything about mic handling it sounds so good I’m extremely happy with it. I can only imagine how good the more expensive models are. Love me some Shure mics 🙏🏽
I agree with you. SLXD is a great bang for your buck. You can have a great system with an Antenna Distro and Shure Workbench and networking. It's not the best best... but good value.
Great video! Just some thoughts, 20hz - 20khz sounds good on paper but most professional systems are shaving off significant portions of the upper and lower frequencies. In most cases the engineers just need 50hz - 16khz at most. Secondly, none of these systems including the Axient will ever ever be better sonically than a wired Beta58 or Nexadyne. Just something to keep in mind.
100% agree man! The main reason we use wireless mics is because clients want them. I remember an older engineer telling me once, you can spend thousands of dollars on a wireless mic system and it might ALMOST sound as good as a wired 58! Thanks for watching dude!
I was in for an upgrade of my 2 channel Samson analog system and looked at Shure SLXD and QLXD. But opted for the then new Sennheiser EW-DX. Many of the QLXD functions at an SLXD price point. And much more. Really like the network scan functionality with Bluetooth pairing. No more syncing issues in bright sunlight and holding the transmitters awkwardly in front of the receivers. Also the always on displays on the transmitters are really handy. I’m very happy with Sennheiser system (6 channels).
Hello friend, thank you for this video is really helpful. Quick question, I am looking to replace 10 Sennheiser EW 500 G4. We have replaced about 4 transmitters so far and two are in bound to be changed, so instead of continuing to replace the transmitters I want to propose a change of system. Which one would you recommend for a medium size use? Again, we have 10 wireless mics and 7 wireless in ears. TIA!
Not change the ew500 to any shure model! Don't make a mistake! Just buy other capsules. Try Heilsound RC35 and RC37 with your ew500 with ambient adapter- it's really the best of the best! The new sennheiser's systems ew-d or ew-dx -don't work better when yours ew500...
Kind of wish you would’ve mentioned the older GLXD and the issues they have. For anyone who has never used one, they are horrible. They are extremely range limited and their signal does not pass through obstacles well. You also have to constantly update firmware to make them relatively functional… on both mics and receivers. The axient wireless are expensive but have amazing interchangeability with other capsules (can run mics other then Shure) and will work perfectly every time.
You know, it never really occurred to me to include a unit to address it's short comings (don't know why), but it's so obvious to me now how interesting that could have been. Maybe a series on older units and their issues. Thanks for the comment dude and thanks for watching!
Been rocking 2 PGX-D digital systems (900mhz band) for a couple of years now, with sE Electronics V7 capsules on them. They've been rock-solid, but it looks like they've been discontinued. :(
For me in corporate audio, it’s really nice to be able to hand someone a microphone they can turn on and off as needed to make announcements, etc. for the whole day without worrying about the battery, or me babysitting the console. Especially when I’m running 10 breakout rooms in a conference. Clients constantly get confused about the Senheisser mute switch vs power buttons. But in a live show or band I could see the benefit of hiding the power button, but in that case I just lock the power switch on the Shure mics
Maybe it depends on where on the planet you use them, but here in Europe the transmission with GLX is awful, with BLX being great, even the more expensive SLX is problematic. But that aside, after working with Audio-Technica and feeling their receivers, the materials, weight, build quality, there is no going back to Shure although I find the company one of the best microphone company around.
