  • The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD has been updated in many different ways including more power, more cameras and a fresh interior. To test this new heavy duty Silverado we hooked up a fifth-wheel travel trailer and pulled it around for the day to find out just how well this truck can work.

    I'm firmly in the "we have enough power now" camp. What GM is doing, focusing on usable low end power, and maybe increased MPG, that's what I'm looking for. This duramax and the SO cummins are ideal IMHO, really looking forward to the comparison between this truck and your ram SO towing the same trailer!

      I agree. Just used my L5P to pull our fifth wheel thru the Shenandoah mountains at the speed limits. No sweat. Coolant temp never budged even in 90 degree heat. Trans stayed under 165, incredible. The 10 speed is bodacious in the mountains. Yes, we have enough power now, at least with my loads, but I’m way under GCVW.

      Yup. Any power increases in the big 3 after now will benefit hotshotters, farmers, and other heavy towers/haulers… and people who have as much or pride than money and want to brag how much better their brand is (and of course those who don’t buy but like to spectate, comment and criticize). People like me, and thousands more, who have a moderately big 5th wheel and boats or whatnot, now have had for a couple of years plenty for our needs. The cooling advances are probably more important than incremental power increases, and the 10 speed transmissions make

    Two passengers 400lbs.
    You're at your maximum payload without any other things in the truck.

    Hey guys great video! When your using the exhaust brake, are you expecting it to just turn on immediately when you push the button? I’ve found with all 4 of my Duramax trucks that it works best when I set it and forget it like tow/haul. I find that one good brake application (similar to hill brake assist) not a tap will then turn on the exhaust brake. I’m so impressed by the brake when it’s done this way, it will slow my truck down 30-40 km/h over a 800 meter run on a 4% downhill with 19,000lbs in tow. It truly gives a confidence when traveling on secondary highways with traffic lights, 80 km/h to 0 km/h type stuff. Great review! Love seeing trucks being used, makes for the best reviews!

    • @TroyGouldYYC
      @TroyGouldYYC 10 месяцев назад +4

      Same. I don't find it doing much until I tap the brake pedal, and the truck detects that I'm going downhill. Some times I find it too aggressive where I just want to maintain my current speed.
      Admittedly, I'm new to diesel trucks. So, I'm also learning how to use it.

    I’m not sure I totally agree with your statement of being over on payload being legal. I suppose it would be possible to exceed the 2900 pound rating and still be under the GVWR which is what really matters.
    The good thing with the GM trucks are they have the best in class axle ratings (5600 standard front with 6000 available and 6600 standard rear with 7250 available). And then new for 2024 is the max towing package for the 2500s which essentially turns a 2500 into a SRW 3500 minus the 12,100 GVWR which in the commercial usage world would almost guarantee a class A cdl for most any equipment trailer. But anyways, the max tow package gives the 3500 SRW rear suspension package and ring gear and increases the rear axle rating to the same as a 3500 SRW along with increasing the GVWR to I think 11750 pounds. So that would give you 400 pounds more payload as compared to a standard 2500.

    WITH ALL DO RESPECT! Good review overall, but I need to say you are a bit off base when it comes to the engine exhaust breaking system. There seems to be a constant complaint about the exhaust brake on the GMC in comparison to the Ram . KEEP IN MIND THAT THE Allison 10 SPEED TRAMSISSION IS MUCH DIFFERRENT then that of the RAM! The GMC approved (Allison transmission) has 10 speeds and if you use the engine brake and column controls properly, the engine brake works extremely well. I mainly drive in the Rocky Mountains (of Colorado) and towing a 12,500. fifth wheel with a 2022 Chevy 6.6 Diesel, 3500 HD long box . What I have experienced is when the exhaust brake is needed and, when the right transmission gearing options are implemented, the exhaust brake system works exceptionally well.

    Maybe in Canada. But from what I've researched, exceeding tow limits Is illegal in the states, and you could be held liable in court for exceeding that if you are in an accident.
    My 2500hd is 8100 curb weight on sticker, which means nothing. Its 8500 with me, the wife,full fuel and DEF tank. Add hitch 200lbs, so true curb weight is 8700lbs. So i already decreased my 3100 lbs payload to 2500lbs before even connecting to a trailer. Its a awesome truck dont get me wrong. But most 5th wheels are 2000 lb pin weight empty. Most at that dry weight when ready to go camping, can be anywhere from 2500 to 3000lbs. So my point is, and you touch on it a little. Dry numbers on both the truck and camper really mean nothing. Those are numbers off the factory floor for both. Camper salesmen and dealerships will downplay the tow numbers, truck manufacturers and dealerships will inflate the tow numbers. The only way to know for sure is to fill the tanks on the truck weigh with you and your significant other. Take that weight, subtract sticker curb weight, then take that number off payload capacity. Thats your true payload. On the camper, 20% of the GVWR to calculate pin weight. I would be willing to bet, 90% of 3/4 ton trucka on the highway with 5th wheels are over weight. What you're "comfortable with" i really dont think a jury of your pears will care about.
    To each their own though

    My 23 3500srw is 3671 payload and 21200, I don’t understand why people still buy 2500 trucks for towing

    In Canada you may be able to go over rated payload or tow capacity, but it is illegal in the US. If you intend to tow south of the border you are opening yourself up to both prosecution and, should anything bad happen, lawsuits.

    Once again, the exhaust brake doesn’t work just because you pushed a button. It needs to know what speed to hold at. That happens when you have set the cruise control and the trailer is pushing you downhill above the set speed. Then it kicks in to hold your set speed.

      @Jason-yq1zs my 23 duramax exhaust brake is useless. Traded one of them in on a ram and it makes the gm look pathetic handling big loads in the mountains especially.

    I guess you haven't driven the new Ford lately because the exhaust brake is as good as Rams now

      We haven't been in the updated diesel Super Duty yet. Only a gasser.
      We'll have a new diesel coming in the next few weeks and we'll be sure to tow with it as well to put the exhaust brake to the test.

      Try all three dually diesel brands going down on a long way down hill 10% to 15% grade and you will not say ford will be close to ram's exhaust/engine brake. Until Ford and GMC/Chevy make that happen, I will say guts-glory-ram...lol.

    Why not go to a SRW 3500 and be within all of the weight ratings? I'd wager moving up to the 1 tonne category is entirely reasonable if you're towing heavy enough to need a heavy trailer endorsement on your driver's license (not sure about Ontario, but in BC that would mean any trailer over 4600kg or 10,120lbs.).

    With the immense number of 3rd world sourced key components on modern GM vehicles (over 750 on Chevrolet Trucks!), I would not try to pull a trailer across the street with a Chevy / GMC truck let alone any significant distance. Having spent 10+ years working for the AAA Automobile Club in Public Affairs, I was astounded to discover how much GM was willing to compromise the quality, durability, and dependability of their vehicles to buffer the bottom line (and executive bonuses accordingly). GM and especially Chevrolet has become a brand for the naive and uneducated.... They are neither American nor quality vehicles!

    The front end has an overbite appearance. I hope they have a new design in 2025. I do not like all of the chrome that Chevy and others are using. Brushed aluminum looks better especially on trucks.

    More views increase the workload and are a band aid for a bad driver. They are there to make money for GM not for a good driver. They are not needed and just distract the driver.

    • @TruckKing
      @TruckKing  11 месяцев назад +3

      I sort of agree with you. In my opinion modern driving aids should be viewed as a bonus, but not as something to be relied upon. I try and drive as if the cameras weren't there, meaning still checking all my blind spots appropriately with the mirrors. Relying on these systems can get you in trouble.
      That said, especially for slow speed maneuvers, it's hard to deny the usefulness of the cameras for simply showing you areas around your truck and trailer you wouldn't have seen before. I think the camera's true value is in emergency situations where a dog or person steps in the way at the last second at a spot you wouldn't have been able to see otherwise.
      That's why I think more camera views are always helpful, but it is the driver's responsibility not to be distracted by them and use them in situations where they have the most benefit. - Stephen

      Thats how I feel about automatic braking. It makes people "lazy" when needing to pay attention and stay alert. At the same time people are lazy and dont pay attention and I don't want to be rear-ended at all. Its a catch 22
