  • Google's newest video doorbell boasts great value and serious smarts. Plus, it dodges most of the criticisms that take down other doorbell cams on the market.
    But a $6 monthly fee for Nest Aware subscribers and a few missing features put a damper on its success.

    I bought and returned this. Other than the video quality not being great the two biggest issues were that it wasn't 3 hours worth of events storage (i.e. multiple 30 sec clips adding up to 3 hours), it is events stored for 3 hours before cleared which is a real issue if something happens at night and the clip is deleted before you get up. Secondly when you get a notification and click on it, I would get the message that the video is not ready for viewing and you have to wait a while until it's available.... totally unacceptable and can't believe Google released a product with these types of issues.

    • @johnt6022
      @johnt6022 2 года назад +2

      Hey GK, thanks for mentioning this. I was thinking of buying one and after reading your message and a few others, I am reluctant to go ahead. This three hours of events is confusing. So if there are multiple 30 second events in the day that total three hours and I don't watch get a chance to view all those events, it simply disappears ?

    • @GK-qc5ry
      @GK-qc5ry 2 года назад +2

      @@johnt6022 Hi it is more like it records the last 3 hours on a rolling basis only. So if something happens at 1am and you wake up at 6am, there won't be a record of the event unless you pay the monthly fee to save events for longer. I had thought you could save 3 hours worth of events, but that isn't true. Only the last 3 hours are available to view which means you always have to have a phone on you and be connected. The video quality wasn't as good as a Ring or Eufy. The Eufy if wired is a very good alternative. Even on battery it's pretty decent and no monthly fees.

      @Kastigador19 2 года назад +3

      @@plainlybasic2300 I’m telling you it doesn’t. It doesn’t detect and record far away movement. I can appreciate the heat issue but that can be designed for within reason. There’s after all plenty of wired security cameras in hot humid climates. I certainly would not expect battery powered operation to be recording movements only because that would burn up the battery. Wired though is quite different and I have found full recording useful many times when motion was not flagged by Google. I have zero concerns about bandwidth as many people have unmetered connections. I can understand for some people it’s a problem. There really should be an option to flip between two modes or they should make separate hardwired units full recording and battery powered units motion/ai only.

    Great review, after having the doorbell battery for almost a month, I don't recommend it at all:
    1. the button is not clear for people to press! it sound silly but delivery people are knocking on my door not noticing the button (google made it too modern (very thin light on the button no symbol of a bell or anything) that doesn't convey the purprpose which is annoying.
    2. even when wired the battery keeps dropping off under 75% which what where it should stay at when wired according to google (meaning you will have to charge at some point as it will not work after getting to 3% even when wired)
    3. It's not good at play back events, a lot of times when playing history of events, the image is stuck but you can hear the sound of what's happening making the event useless
    4. there is no way to remotely restart the doorbell, you will have to take it off and press the button behind for 5 seconds. you will have to restart it at some point when there is a glitch (and it happens)
    5 if the action was too quick you will only see the last end
    6. Google home is a mess, they have learned nothing from nest app (which is far more better)

    It seems no reviewers of door security cams discuss the obvious weakness that doorbell security cams can be easily and rapidly removed from wherever they are "mounted". A person comes to your door in a hoody and face mask and tears your security cam from its flimsy mount. HOW DO YOU PREVENT THEFT? Couldn't a security door cam be designed so the lens could be attached to the body through the door peep hole and the electronics is attached to the lens and hangs inside the door? Also, blue tooth motion activation and could reduce the need for long storage, if the device only recorded when there was motion in the area.

      there are such devices. but also i believe ring offer some sort of "theft replacement" guarantee (though that might only be with a subscription). I'd suggest you (or anyone else) do not use a doorbell as your only security cam - I have a doorbell camera that i use primarily for doorbell notifications but also have traditional cctv mounted out of reach covering a wider area. A bigger concern for me is the doorbell has way too long a delay at sending notifications and then loading the app - someone could break in, help themselves to whatever is closest to the door and be on their way before i even get a notification from nest. thankfully my cctv does almost instant notifications

      And this is why I now feel dissapointed after buying one. I understood this wrongly (comming from a 6 year old zmodo doorbell). If any event happened more than 3 hours ago you will be unaware with googlw doorbell. If anyone rang the doorbell while you were at work -> no event stored. If you sleep more than 3 hours, bad luck. Google does not store 3h of footage, more like less than a minute/user on average...

    This thing will not work in prolonged winter temperatures. The thing runs off battery EVEN WHEN HARDWIRED, there is no way around the battery, and the battery fails below -10c. It will not charge via doorbell wires, and you have to unhook it and take it inside to charge via USB for at least 5 hours. The battery does not hold its charge in cold weather and will last as little as 1 week. Be warned.

    Wrong about one thing, if something happens the night before it will be there saved. It doesn’t record continuously. Only when it sees activity. I can usually go back days to see video. Each event is limited to 30 seconds. But if it sees something after the 30 sec, it will create a new video. You people obviously didn’t even try the product, only read the pamphlet 😂
