I love the idea of having a salary cap but it works for leagues like NBA because it's tied to the league revenue but more importantly, there's only 1 league to manage. It would be impossible to manage individual league salary caps in soccer, especially in Europe due to continental cups etc. Even if the leagues had their own caps, because the higher cap league would attract the best players, Champions League would be even more dominated by bigger clubs. So it'd be a rich gets richer situation. It was a great video Tom, thank you

    • @TomFM

Strangely enough I was watching some videos on the NBA salary cap earlier. I really like the idea but it would be so difficult to implement in European football.

Experiment idea, apologies if already done. Could you potentially get a second tier league above a top tier league and how long would it take, what manipulation would it take?
So for example could you place a transfer embargo on all Premiership teams and destroy facilities. Embargo all teams in the championship, give them perfect squads and perfect facilities. Although I'm not sure if it would be doable and see if the championship through competition wins could over take the prem or break into the top 5 leagues.

And that is why you can’t implement a salary cap in England - as you’d lose all the top players abroad, and you don’t really get *that* much change at the top.
Did England’s international team improve however?

This experiment is very funny, but if we are honest it fails because the game and it's AI are not ready to handle this.
The AI fails because it's clearly making bad deals, with some players earning high salaries that are not registered, it would have made more sense to sell them or just let their previous contract expire, so the game is not capable of handling salary caps correctly.
Another thing that should happen is that with Premier League salaries going down, the rest of the big 5 would have their salaries going down as well, because there would be fewer clubs able to pay those high salaries, but again the game is not able to handle that.
Still, it does show what everyone knows, that salary caps should be implemented as they do create more even teams on a nationa and international level. It's why mid-tier Europe clubs cannot be competitive in Champions League because they can't keep their best players, as any club in Premier is able to pay 4x their salary...
