I sang this song in a 4 -part boys' choir way back in 1958 during my secondary school in King's College, Hong Kong. We won the annual school competition. It is still a nostalgic memory of the old days in British colonial Hong Kong.
Upon further review. It is simply unbelievable that this is a high school choir. From what planet did that soloist get those solid, manly baritone notes into the same voice with that beautiful tenor range? I hope he's a professional by now.
I am stunned that this is a high school group. Amazing tenor soloist- and what choir director wouldn't kill to have a true bass in her/his high school vocal ensemble?
just wow. this is well done on all levels, and i mean arrangement, soloist, basses, tenors, the balance of everyone combined, quality of singing, interpretation, dynamics, everything. it's such a dychotomy with the faces so young, amazing
I just wanna say -- I've been listening to various recordings of this on RUclips, incl Louis Armstrong and Paul Robeson -- which I very, very much like. Friends from Coppell -- this is my favorite!
Thanks for hearting my comment after 12 years, Bro. Listened to this for the first time in years. I got shivers in the initial a capella part. Sang along with the soloist and tears started streaming down my face.
This chorus and this arrangement (including piano) have done a marvelous job of capturing the spirit of this piece. This IS a dark song- just read the words! This is NOT a toe-tapper- this is a lament. Livelier? 102?? Bite your tongue!! Director (please tell us who you are!), chorus, Kevin, pianist- Thanx to all of you for giving this to us all.
I am plesantly surprised that these young men sound this good they are excellent. A High School Choir i now know that there is still hope for our youth
Listen to those basses beastin'. This is awesome and I'm SO happy to find this version. Heard too many jazzy/gospel version that just don't have the impact this does. Who is the composer?
@@feliciaharris553 you're right!! I know the basic history of spirituals and I think that is another reason they are so impactful now. "Tell old Pharoah let my people go." It's a powerful message.
Kevin! You have a magnificent voice. I hope you have done something with that voice after this video. Beautiful voices in the choir! Congratulations to your choir director.
WOW, this is a high school choir? The basses and the soloist are particularly impressive. And the sound is very clean. I don't hear a lot of noise or bad notes, except one in the piano near the middle of the piece. Good sforzando and pianissimo.
I am in this chorus and Kevin (the soloist) is def a tenor his lowest note is like a couple notes below middle C. and his tone of singing is a tenor anyways not just because he is young but its how his voice is and im not trying to start the argument again I am just saying..
The video is amazing, but it was just...awe inspiring for those who were there in person. My school was there watching you perform after us, and we were at the banquet, though I could have sworn your school got the gold, but I much have been mistaken. We got the Spirit of London award that time around, I only wish we were going back next year. =]
When I was a freshman in high school 33 years ago we had more than 14 boys in the choir................a few years later the choir director retired due to bad health I went to a concert that his replacement was leading. There were 8 boys in the choir vs. more than 25 girls. Girls just like singing in high school more than boys do.
r5t6y12 In my school (Currently a senior in highschool) We have a classroom full of 26 male students and in the women's portion of the class about 30. Us in the male group usually get along WAY more than the female students. (Drama ETC.) Also in different classes.
According to the score, there is no indication whether it has to be a tenor or bass soloist. When Moses Hogan recorded it (Moses Hogan Choral Series 2002 double cd), he used a bass soloist with the soloist using his falsetto on the high, soft parts. The use of the treble clef was to avoid ledger lines.
soloist has SOUL! The arrangement was weird b/c the piano kept going in and out and just when you thought it wouldnt come back it did which was reallly weird. But where is this choir from?
Hmmm I think this is the best version on youtube... Although I think I have heard better. Still good though. If you have any suggestions of other versions please enlighten me.

This is 11 years old now but you dudes rocked it! Reminds me of my days in HS choir fun times!

This is absolutely beautiful 💯🤲🏾
I am stunned that this is a high school group. Amazing tenor soloist- and what choir director wouldn't kill to have a true bass in her/his high school vocal ensemble?
*3 years later*

Still is
got struck in the heart... solo, basses, harmonies, direction of the choir... wonderfull ! !!

Absolutely gorgeous! My choir is learning this song now and I must say that you guys were simply incredible. And the soloist has a tremendous voice.
0:38 someone put on headphones and tell me what low note did that bass hit god damn and not to mention the tenor solo sounds god almighty
It’s an F2 to a G2, Which is pretty low for a choral song.
Boundary F#2, the dude who sang it was a beast. He made All-State Mixed choir twice as a Bass II. He's probably singing opera now.
they snapped !!! I throughly enjoyed this bass gang !
Amazingly great, I'm learning this in choir. That soloist was great.
Wow...what a performance. They all have such beautiful singing, and the tone and timing of the entire song is flawless! Truely a form of art :)
I am plesantly surprised that these young men sound this good they are excellent. A High School Choir i now know that there is still hope for our youth
@rootedinfaith3 - This arrangement is by Moses Hogan. It can be purchased from most choral sheet music outets online. It was arranged in TTBB.
Listen to those basses beastin'. This is awesome and I'm SO happy to find this version. Heard too many jazzy/gospel version that just don't have the impact this does. Who is the composer?
Check Moses Hogan
It's louis armstrong
It is an old slave song.
@@feliciaharris553 you're right!! I know the basic history of spirituals and I think that is another reason they are so impactful now. "Tell old Pharoah let my people go." It's a powerful message.
We sung this song a lot when I was a child. Especially growing up in the AME Church, it was a staple before the 80s.
So beautiful !great job!

Traffix88 You haven’t listened to the Moses Hogan singers then, lol.
I'm so glad I got to see this in person.
I'm still moved when I listen to it, I remember sitting in the pews stunned.

My favorite rendition of this song, by far.

there were a LOT of good things here, #1 is getting that many teenage boys working as a group!
When I was a freshman in high school 33 years ago we had more than 14 boys in the choir................a few years later the choir director retired due to bad health I went to a concert that his replacement was leading. There were 8 boys in the choir vs. more than 25 girls.
