- A few weeks ago a friend of mine saw an add for this old VW LT31 tow truck. He sent me a link and told me to buy it. Well I did, sight unseen! Now a few weeks later I have gone to pick it up. Will it drive home?

Bringing back memories for me! I flew out 1200 miles from my home to drive back sight unseen 1979 Mercedes turbodiesel! No issuses! Great memories. Got a motel room one night! My 1st car was an Audi LS100!
,As long as the metal-moth hasn't chewed on it too much, it looks like a sound investment.
You should add a tachometer so you will know whether you are lugging that truck's engine or not.
Burger King AND ice cream! That is a trip that my child self ]would remember!
It was a great day out together
I worked for AAA's National Office for much of my career, so I'm partial to tow trucks, but never have I seen one like yours. I think it is great and will be very useful. I also enjoyed the scenes of driving along the Swedish landscape. My wife and I visited Sweden for the first time two years ago to reunite with family members who have not been together since my great grandfather emigrated to America in the late 1800s. It was a wonderful experience that your video brought back to mind.
The engine sounds good. It will be fun getting it back into tip-top condition. Looks like you found a bargain. Nice.
I think so too! Engine seems to be in good condition so far
That's a great buy Adam VW LTs very reliable and easy to maintain they were very popular in the UK used for all sorts of work and their were Camper Vans as well once you go through it I am sure you will be very content with it best regards Andy Allen.
Thanks Andy! From what I have read they do seem very reliable and parts are cheap for them. It needs a few small things but should be good soon.
Great Idea 👍. Just make sure you have good quality tyres regarding the weight it will transport.
It will need new rear tires pretty soon. I will be going through the brakes too.
My dad had a lt31 panel van in 1982,older model than this with the round headlights.it was a1979 model year.was a good van,had the petrol porsche audi engine in it.allways started but used to churn over a while before it did.it allso had a automatic choke.nevee faiked in the couple of years he had it,replaced it with a mercedes 207d,that was a good van to.
It's remind me the first Ford Econoline generation (1961-1967) bought by older brother. He never drove it ( 3 speed manual on the column ). Nobody in the family was able to drive manual then. I will like to see what you will be able to do with it.
Those Econolines are really cool
Cool! Look for a gps speedometer online. They are very inexpensive and works very well. It uses 5v from an USB phone charger. I used one when the instrument pack on my XJ40 stopped working, until I found a replacement unit.
I think as a business asset it is nice to have . I did notice from the travel video that the commercial trucks in Sweeden are cab over trucks . In USA we done away with that style of commercial trucks with the conventional front end . I held a Class CDL myself and drove 18 wheelers across the US from coast to coast . We referred to cab over trucks as widow makers as there is nothing between u and the front of vehicle .
Great truck...will give you all sorts of options in your business and acquisition of new classics for yourself. How big a vehicle can the VW Truck haul? Would an XJ fit? BTW, your kid is adorable and will always remember how cool his dad is to take him on this trip.
From the measurements I have made an XJ should fit on it. I really do hope it is a trip he will remember
Good choice Adam. It should work fine for you. Brings back memories of my 1965 Ford econoline van I had in the 70’s !
Those are cool vans!
Looks OK and sounded right. Just needs all the usual fettling, thank you for posting.
Thanks for watching!
What a cool looking truck, what's the ride like being sat over the front wheels ? I can see this with a fresh coat of paint from the Jaguar range and the Living with a classic logo on the doors 👍😁
So many memories great choice interesting vehicle
Lovely new (very useful) toy 😊!
I think it will be!
2:22 It's in better condition than that other VW 😅
Haha true
VWs slant six. Rumors have it the engine was meant to go into the first Audi 5000, but made the car too nose heavy, so one cylinder got cut off to make the 5-cyl.
That rumour does make sense. It seems a pretty elaborate engine for a truck
A lovely adventure! You're braver than I for sure 😊
It was a blast
Its so handy to have a car like this in your business. But, sorry to say, I think you will have problems loading passenger cars on this one. Especially cars with low clearance to the ground. They will not go over the bend without planks under the wheels and so on. I really hope I`m wrong. Good luck.
I would also check out its tare (unladen) weight. The gross permitted weight is 3100kg/3.1 tonnes. If you will be carrying XJs, I think they weigh about 1.6 to 1.8 tonnes, so if the unladen weight is more than 1.3, you may have problems.
They were stylish vehicles for a light commercial - quite a neat, clean look to them. I hired an LT28 back in the mid-80s to fetch a chest freezer across southern England. It was quite brisk- don't forget it is quite low geared to cope with the load, so unladen it should have flown up that hill near the Bastad turn. I did find it uncomfortable over the length of the journey (about 2 hours), also a bouncy ride upfront when unladen.
I think the engine was a one-off, derived from the VW 6 cylinder.
@@neilbucknell9564 Agree. And seems a little short too for Jags. Hope I`m wrong.
Hi Adam, there is a 1974 Jaguar XJ 6L in the junkyard near where I live. It is a complete car (at least it was this morning). Anything you need off of it before it gets scrapped? Let me know, Cheers, Doug. And I will be in Sweden 24 June.
Cool car transporter, clean it up and fix it up and it will give you years of savings rom tow trucks...
Thanks! I think so too. If I use it 5 times it will have paid for itself
Had a 92 T35 for year's over here in England - 2.4L 6 cylinder Audi diesel engine ( Old Volvo's used the engines as well ) and twin rear wheels . 14ft x 7ft alumnium flat back for haulage - Mine cost £450 / $475 in 2004 and i sold it for £500 / $550 in 2019 . Engine cover had a flap to check the oil but had to be removed to check the water like your's = i made a cut out in the engine cover where the filler cap was and cut the rubber mat bigger around the cut out so it worked like a flap to get to check the water EVERY DAY .
I fitted heavy duty rubber bump stops on the rear , they were full height between the axle and the chassis - but with 3 ton on the truck dropped just 2" and with 75psi in the twin rear's it looked like it was still empty .
New gearbox drive for the speedo is cheap - plastic gear wears and it's just a bolt to remove to replace , but drop the old one out and count the teeth as it matters .
Parking brake on them all used to wear , i removed the rivet to take the ratchet out to file the teeth and reshape the point on the pawl , put a bolt through with nyloc nut so it could be taken apart again .
The winch is a joke - an ATV one that will pull a Quad bike out of the mud but no good at all for winching a vehicle on .
Check the mount is good enough to take a 3 or 5 ton one as it's whats needed to use a suitable size wire rope . And fit a remote so you can sit in the vehicle while loading so iff the winch line breaks you can slam on the brakes .
Cheap 12v wifi camera for android phones is good as well , fit it on the top of the cab so you can see when reversing and when sitting in a vehicle loading so you don't go over the side .
Headlights were bad as well , mine had big round 1970's bulbs that were like yellow candles lol , fitting driving lights is essential iff your going to be going down country roads at night .
And you may find the ramp ( beaver tail ) is a little sharp of an angle and short for some vehicles . Modern lower ones may scrape the bumpers .
After market clutch cables can be an issue as the plastic end that fits to the pedal break - Use VW ones as they last for year's .
But the key to making it last is check the oil and water daily , they got a bad name because people were too lazy to remove the engine cover to check the water and boiled them and blamed the vehicle .
Used to take my boys out when they were pre school , had a board that sat on the seat under the child seat and went into the glove box ( my trucks was was open , no drop down door ) for them to put their feet up on to stretch their legs out on long ( 6 to 8 hour ) trips out , Both grown now but the oldest still has his toy collie dog he used to sit in the corner of the screen , he said was watching the road for us .
Best part of owning this will be the memories with him at your side ......
That tow tuck has a gas engine. When he checks the oil level, you can clearly see the distributor cap and spark plug wires.
@@mikedx2706 So observant - your point is ? .
Aha the same engine in my 86 Volvo 240 d6. Sweeeet
Well not, it’s a gasoline engine
After your comments and information , it's a no brainer ! Well done !
Anyone else spot the Audi component? OOOO
I’m going to enjoy this Adam. Does it have a tipping bed for loading?
it will make you money. smart move.
I think so too
Them VW Lt are reliable old vans carry and tow well but really slow just the body do rot really bad I had one but they are to easy to get stolen trust me as mine did I did get it back mine was twin wheel back axle but I had to do alot of welding but after a couple of years and many miles hard work engine went bang and scraped it but im in the uk hope you have look with it 👍
The LT28 had the 6cyl 2.4L Diesel from Audi. That was the same engine Volvo used in the 240 D6, 740D and the 760TD.
I am pretty sute VW/Audi never used an inline6 in any passenger car during the 1970's nor the 1980's.
It's a neat little truck but it does seem to have a very short final drive ratio which is not ideal for highway travelling.
I think the ratio actually isn’t too bad. It’s just not running very well and I didn’t want to push it too hard. I think it will do highway speeds no problem at all after I sort out the engine.
His truck has a gas engine, not an Audi or Volvo diesel.
It’s built to carry a load, and do a job. If the straight 6 has to rev, let it !
Looking forward to seeing tow truck videos.
I'm confused what country are you in I'm a new subscription
do it have a inline six
Yes, 2.4 VW Audi gasoline
a den är odödlig
