I think the Oscar’s are fun to see who’s nominated. But overall I don’t really care all that much. Besides if an actor or film I really like is nominated- the only category I care about is the best animated feature. I always enjoy seeing animated foreign films get noticed. Amazing video as always Alicia!

As a self professed cinemaphile (derogatory), I have such a love/hate relationship with awards season. I think how much I care about shows like the Oscars and the Golden Globes depends on how good the movies of that specific year were, and this year, the films were INCREDIBLE and that reflects in the nominees. I’m fully expecting either Oppenhimer or Killers of the Flower Moon to sweep tonight. That being said, yes, there needs to be some real systematic change to the Oscars so that more incredible performances and stories from minority creators get highlighted and rewarded

Cinephile (derogatory) is so real lmao same and couldn’t agree more! I always watch more or less out of curiosity, but the last few years I’ve been actually excited to see how things play out.

I don't know exactly why, but I still "care" about the oscars, which is why I watched your entire insightful vid Alice!
I haven't watched the show in yrs, and am painfully aware of the many shortcomings of the show&awards, but like you imagine that tiny improvements over recent decades have led to a better selection of noms&winners. It's an unnecessarily slow evolution of the process, but time does march on!

I must say I was really impressed overall with the set of winners we got overall. Also, I believe this year set the record for most number of non-English language films to win various categories in a single year (4 films: GODZILLA MINUS ONE (VFX winner), THE BOY AND THE HERON (Animated Feature), THE ZONE OF INTEREST (International Feature Film and Sound), and ANATOMY OF A FALL (Original Screenplay)) (that Sound win made my jaw drop and was so well deserved). Non-English films have really been making strides in various categories these past few years! There has been a clear evolution in the types of films being recognized nowadays, and it fills me with hope in that regard.

And yeah, the Academy has a lot of problematic issues, for starters, the very notion of an institution giving awards immediately puts that institution in a power and authority position. While it retains relevance, well, it's better it has the best possible representation and practices. Congrats for this video!

2019: The best-reviewed film of the year was Lulu Wang's dramedy "The Farewell." I've seen it. It's a lovely film, both smart and sweet.
The Academy ignores it completely. Not a single nomination comes its way. Meanwhile, it honors the polarizing "Joker" with multiple nods. #OscarsSoMale
I admit I do enjoy seeing movies I love earn nominations and awards. "The Boy and the Heron" won Best Animated Feature last night and I couldn't be more thrilled. But I've long since given up seeing Oscar wins as clear marks of quality.

No we should not care. Any awards or polls can only recognize a small fraction of films (whether they have diversity guidelines or not) instead of the totality of film achievements. To truly appreciate film, we need to forget these polls and awards and just appreciate the totality of the medium by having a broad taste and seeing as many types of films as possible. I believe it was Quentin Tarantino who said that a list of films that are in the top 50 or whatever always pales in comparison with the list of films that are not. That has proven correct in my decades of movie-loving life. Alicia, have you seen "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" from 1970? It's a fantastic and influential murder mystery. And yet it will never be nominated for any awards or listed on all-time best film polls.

I grew up watching the Oscars during the 70s, 80s and 90s but I haven't watched in the past 25 years. It turned into something that just wasn't very enjoyable and seems more about a political and social agendas than an award show. The standards listed in order to be nominated pretty much means I won't ever be watching the Oscars ever again.

Daaaaah--ling...wrote you a loooong comment, I hope it posted. THIS one shall be MUUUUCH shorter. Mentioning movies, one you MUST see if you haven't, is the legendary film from 1976, toe Oscar winner for screenplay: "NETWORK"! It is a writing and performance masterpiece. Some miss the point that it is one of THE most brilliant satires of ALL time--especially in regards to the entertainment industry, as well as just what people have to deal with in life in general. Was FAAAAR ahead of it's time.
Am including a link to TWO of the most famous speeches from it. They are devastating and on the button! One is the business owner of a television network. It sums up the fallacies of coorporate greed than anything ever honestly stated in any medium. The most famous being the "I'm Mad As HELL..." speech. That that is the well-known line from it...but it is one before it that GETS it there, and that is one I have lived by for since that day back than when I saw and heard it! And it is direct and simple and perfect, and it is: "I'm A Human Being, God DAMN it! MY LIFE HAS VALUE!!" What more needs to be said ?! I hope you'll watch the entire film.
