I think the Oscar’s are fun to see who’s nominated. But overall I don’t really care all that much. Besides if an actor or film I really like is nominated- the only category I care about is the best animated feature. I always enjoy seeing animated foreign films get noticed. Amazing video as always Alicia!
@@aliciavquinnthe boy and the heron is an incredible movie! Studio Ghibli never disappoints. It’s got a beautiful story and breathtaking animation. And always absolutely adore your content Alicia!
For me it’s my superbowl, my family and I go all out! We get the living room decorated, we do the ballots, it’s a huge thing and since we’ve been doing it since I was 5, it holds a really special place in my heart
Awee we actually have a similar tradition at my house! It’s really festive and a lot of our friends love film as well and we all try to watch as many nominees as possible, so it’s always a fun time with everyone.
As a self professed cinemaphile (derogatory), I have such a love/hate relationship with awards season. I think how much I care about shows like the Oscars and the Golden Globes depends on how good the movies of that specific year were, and this year, the films were INCREDIBLE and that reflects in the nominees. I’m fully expecting either Oppenhimer or Killers of the Flower Moon to sweep tonight. That being said, yes, there needs to be some real systematic change to the Oscars so that more incredible performances and stories from minority creators get highlighted and rewarded
Cinephile (derogatory) is so real lmao same and couldn’t agree more! I always watch more or less out of curiosity, but the last few years I’ve been actually excited to see how things play out.
Fantastic video on point as always. You are so very well spoken and well researched, I've been glued to your content since I became aware of you. Keep it up!!
Another banger of a video. It is refreshing to see more diverse films being recognized, even if it is too many years too late. Can’t wait to see what you put out next!
I don't know exactly why, but I still "care" about the oscars, which is why I watched your entire insightful vid Alice! I haven't watched the show in yrs, and am painfully aware of the many shortcomings of the show&awards, but like you imagine that tiny improvements over recent decades have led to a better selection of noms&winners. It's an unnecessarily slow evolution of the process, but time does march on!
Thank you kindly - and I’d have to agree with you on that! I’m an optimist at the end of the day, so I’m genuinely excited to see what’s to come and cautiously hopeful about these (long overdue) changes.
never clicked on a video so fast, saw u pop up and didn't even read the title ❤ outfit looks incredible as always, i love that u look like the award with all the gold :))
I must say I was really impressed overall with the set of winners we got overall. Also, I believe this year set the record for most number of non-English language films to win various categories in a single year (4 films: GODZILLA MINUS ONE (VFX winner), THE BOY AND THE HERON (Animated Feature), THE ZONE OF INTEREST (International Feature Film and Sound), and ANATOMY OF A FALL (Original Screenplay)) (that Sound win made my jaw drop and was so well deserved). Non-English films have really been making strides in various categories these past few years! There has been a clear evolution in the types of films being recognized nowadays, and it fills me with hope in that regard.
I always enjoy your videos Alicia and this was very well done. I hate injustice and unfairness so something needs to be done to create a level playing field. I notice that you now have 107K subscribers which is very good considering your short time on youtube. I look forward to your next film. Thanks.
Hey Alicia! Happy belated birthday! I hope you had a great day! Thanks for your comments! I started following you for fashion history, then the cool looks and your super amazing talent for makeup, and now I stay for this content! your opinions and analysis reflect your cleverness and background as a historian. (those editing gods really listened to our prayers xD) And yeah, the Academy has a lot of problematic issues, for starters, the very notion of an institution giving awards immediately puts that institution in a power and authority position. While it retains relevance, well, it's better it has the best possible representation and practices. Congrats for this video!
Absolutely nailed it, per usual!! so insightful!💖 this year was such a great year for movies that I’m actually excited to watch the Oscar’s😂 my fingers are crossed for Lily Gladstone🤞🏻
2019: The best-reviewed film of the year was Lulu Wang's dramedy "The Farewell." I've seen it. It's a lovely film, both smart and sweet. The Academy ignores it completely. Not a single nomination comes its way. Meanwhile, it honors the polarizing "Joker" with multiple nods. #OscarsSoMale I admit I do enjoy seeing movies I love earn nominations and awards. "The Boy and the Heron" won Best Animated Feature last night and I couldn't be more thrilled. But I've long since given up seeing Oscar wins as clear marks of quality.
hi alicia!! so far i have loved all your videos so i was excited to see this in my feed, especially since i really only follow the oscars through youtube content lol. but i just wanted to let you know the volume/gain in this video is a little bit low and it's very difficult for me to hear over my laptop speakers at max volume in a room with regular ambient noise. it would be awesome and improve accessibility if you could raise the gain a little bit in the next one-- which i look forward to! :D
Thank youuuuu I appreciate your honest feedback - truthfully I am still a super spring chicken figuring all this out but recently got a new camera and mic so hopefully the audio issues I’ve had will be remediated in my next video! 😅
Honestly, after the shit they pulled with Chadwick Boseman, I realised the oscar’s are not worth messing up my sleeping schedule (i live in the UK so it runs from 12am to 3am)
No we should not care. Any awards or polls can only recognize a small fraction of films (whether they have diversity guidelines or not) instead of the totality of film achievements. To truly appreciate film, we need to forget these polls and awards and just appreciate the totality of the medium by having a broad taste and seeing as many types of films as possible. I believe it was Quentin Tarantino who said that a list of films that are in the top 50 or whatever always pales in comparison with the list of films that are not. That has proven correct in my decades of movie-loving life. Alicia, have you seen "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" from 1970? It's a fantastic and influential murder mystery. And yet it will never be nominated for any awards or listed on all-time best film polls.
I just finished watching. Very informative! A watch party sounds fun. Hollywood has dubious beginnings and has obviously been orchestrated from its inception so its progression through the years seems organic but may have also been orchestrated as well.

I grew up watching the Oscars during the 70s, 80s and 90s but I haven't watched in the past 25 years. It turned into something that just wasn't very enjoyable and seems more about a political and social agendas than an award show. The standards listed in order to be nominated pretty much means I won't ever be watching the Oscars ever again.

You just want more foreign film's to win over American Film's.
Y'all just tribal for y'all own.
The Boy in the Heron shouldn't won over SpiderVerse.

No, you had it right the first time, it's "Was". The "was" refers to "the awards show" (singular), not "the awards" (plural).
