Okay, commenting now after watching... It's just amazing how much research you do and how passionate you are about fashion history. I dated a fashion designer for 10 years and my sister used to be the couture designer for Ralph Lauren, so I spent many years listening to people who are passionate about fashion, and it's truly a joy to listen to you. I know how much work you must've put into this, so thank you! :)
I love seeing this! People dont deep dive into 60s and 70s fashions like this because of how much new and unique things came from that time. Id love to see more dives into different corners of vintage/mid-century fashion! Or even like evolutions of fashion through a decade or "era" I just love how much you incorporated the cultural implications and influences of the time here and your "french pimple" video. I'll keep watching if you keep creating❤❤❤
in both of the original pilots (it had two) for star trek the women wore pants same as the men. it was the female cast members that advocated for the miniskirt uniforms.
OK but I genuinely adore this video, you put so much research and work into this and it was both informative and super fun. I have such a soft spot for this sort of fashion
The please was all mine, @@aliciavquinn. I don't really care about "fashion" per se, but your vids make the topic relevant to me... How do you do that anyway?!?
I found this channel through the Unsolved Mysteries video, but this video was super interesting too! I don't really care about fashion, personally, but I love a history lesson that explains elements of the past well. I've enjoyed videos Kaz Rowe has done on fashion for the same reason. They answered questions for me like "What was life like for women wearing corsets? Why on earth did corsets even come about? How did corsets evolve at the time, and how have they evolved since?" Like, it's easy to say, "corsets, WTF?!" but it's really interesting to learn some more history, especially if it explores the human experience and socio-political goings-on at the time. Anyway, I'm really glad I found this channel, and I'll recommend it to people when related topics come up. A couple things I'd recommend looking into are audio mixdown (and general audio mixing) in the video editing program you use, and how best to use your sound recording setup. Hopefully you won't need to go so far as room prep or turning off AC, though 'cause that's a big hassle, IMO. I bring this up because your videos are a lot quieter than most RUclips videos, and I had to turn my volume all the way up a few times. Also, I'm very aware of how hard it can be to get great audio sometimes. Fortunately, there are a lot of easy, automated steps in audio mixing that will do most of the work for you. (some you do have to finesse, but it becomes second nature, especially when the recording environment and voice doesn't change much.) To be clear, this is stuff I'm currently familiarizing myself with. I've wasted so much time manually adjusting audio levels when I could've used a compressor and then just tweaked it. I'd say it's embarrassing, but hey, I learned now! 🤣I have a good ear for detail, but for a long time I just never thought to research basic tools of the trade, so to speak. You probably already know a lot of this stuff, but I wanted to bring it up, just in case. I hope you find your ideal work-flow that makes this stuff simple, 'cause I'm already looking forward to seeing new videos from this channel, and I've only seen two, so far! Keep up the good work! I hope this channel goes far, because you're really good at making fascinating informative videos about stuff I didn't even know I would be interested in!
I love the bonkers levels of costuming they get into with Star Trek. It reminds me of a blog I used to follow called Fashion It So, which covered the fashion of various TNG episodes.
Ahh yes!! 60s medieval revival is one of my favorite fashion sub genres of all time! I have a collection of 60s medieval dresses and am planning a deep dive on that topic too 🥰
For me, definitely, this has become one instant favorite video essay! Awesome video! and the outfit is super cool. I love the earrings🤍, too; but the makeup is sooo good! 💙💙❤ This video prompted me so many ideas; it's very engaging and interesting. I really like that, while having an appreciation for fashion, you still have critical comments on it. Talking about science fiction is so fascinating because it reveals how not only history but also imagination is tied to its conditions of possibility, sometimes being even more revealing of ideologies than historical events. Utopia, a hyperbolization of current values; and dystopia, a hyperbolization of current anxieties. (also, I sense there is some colonial thinking on some of those narratives, aliens, settlement, discovery and conquest of another planet [land], tied to the gender elements). Thanks for your insights! very informative and well delivered!
Thank you for this thoughtful comment! I’ve read it several times over ☺️ and couldn’t agree more - I think that particular aspect of possibility in Sci-Fi and horror reveals SO much of its given culture climate. And very true re: colonialism themes…some of it is just straight up glorified western imperialism but in ✨space✨ Thanks for watching and commenting, as always!
I feel too ugly to submit anything for the fashion show, but I do love to coordinate outfits...does it have to be mod style,or just an outfit we really like?
When I was a little girl in San Antonio, Texas, our lunch ladies made a huge grayish meat ball with craters for the kids' lunch that day. It resembled the moon to celebrate the lunar landing. Also, I proudly wore a pair of girls silver go-go boots that week.
1. Great job! 2. CONGRATULATIONS on the virtual fashion show gig with the sponsor. 3. You have a repa list?😳 4. You would have made a great Batman villainess. 5. Makeup looks fab!
@@aliciavquinn My apologies. It seems I misheard you. I'm making reference to a particularly nasty running gag from the early internet days. It's the kind of thing a refined woman like yourself should NOT be subjected to.
I have been looking for some of the designs from the movie “First Man” because I really like what the wardrobe designers did to match real 1960s men’s clothing styles. Glad I landed on this video because I got some solid notes. Thanks, Alicia!
My favourite Fashion Era ❤ experimental yet practical. Pierre Cardin, Andre Courreges, Paco Rabanne... Love retrofuturism and how the idea of future is represented in every decade. Please watch the fantastic costume design for the Italian Sci-fi film "The 10th victim" by the iconic Sorelle Fontana, so underrated. I need s part 2
This video is so, so good!! In high school and college I was well and truly obsessed with the Space Age aesthetic. Seeing your highly researched, thought-provoking and fun analysis of this era was delightful! [Edited for grammar]
That was great, thank you! I am always fascinated by the big time models from the 60s- They were not as well known as years later, but still made a large impact on popular fashion...I would love to see a book or whatever digging into the stars of modeling back when...
Such a comprehensive and fun video! You really did your homework! Total slay! ❤❤❤❤❤ Would love to see 60s space age futurism and 90s/00s Y2K futurism make a comeback!
This was a great essay, very informative and well researched. Also perfect timing, as I'm incidentally working on a clothing mod for Fallout 4 right now.
I tried to reverse image search so many times - usually I have all of the sources readily available but that one is a bit mysterious. I’ve seen it credited as from a Pierre Cardin photoshoot and also from a rare or lost 1960s Muslim film (?) sorry I wish I could share more; will update if I’m able to!
Even if Retro-Futurism as a concept is more or less complete bunk when it comes to speculating on the likely trajectory of the future, as an artistic motif it’s almost peerless. Some of my favorite pieces of media (e.g. Fallout, Batman the Animated Series, Thief) have tended to base their design elements around anachronistic futures that remain defined by the idioms and conventions of the eras from which they stem. If nothing else, it makes for a strong visual component, much like how Barbarella is only recalled with fondness due to its distinctly psychoactive envisioning of intergalactic life…alongside Jane Fonda’s scant sartorial sense in the picture.
Fascinating. Do you happen to know if there is a name for the short standup collars you sometimes see with these space age fashions? Thank you. Like all the background history of the era you provide.
