I was just thinking about how I loved this aesthetic when I was a little girl and I’m lowkey getting back into it. The poodles, Paris, cute little designs, all of it. I loved the art style
I’m a graphic designer and I love your inclusion of visual/printed stuff alongside the other media! It’s so interesting to see the kinds of histories and analyses you’re making of the 90’s/‘00s!
Ahh thank you!! So kind of you. I’m a fashion historian so print and digital culture are so important to me 😊 I would love to do more from that period too - it’s just far enough away now and really fun to revisit
I've been randomly daydreaming about this aesthetic recently but couldn't remember enough about it to do my own research - this deep dive is exactly what I've been looking for! Really bringing me back to when I would read Lucky magazine cover to cover as a kid hahaha. Thanks for making this video and excited to see what you make next! :))
I didn’t know there was a name for this but I am known to hoard such images on my Pinterest board. I was a super imaginative kid with older sisters during the golden age of Shoe Diva aesthetic so it’s definitely insanely nostalgic. And, if nothing else, explains my ongoing fascination with line art and painterly art style. I love the whimsy of it all mainly!
That brief mention of Nagel has me hoping that you do a deep dive into 80's new wave fashion. So glad I subbed, really enjoying the context and commentary to the different eras of fashion.
wowwww i havent heard this term before and this is the aesthetic that completely shaped my idea of what it means to be a woman. i think its interesting seeing people say that this is the womanhood they were promised as if they wish they got that life. i understand idealizing it as a kid i was totally doing that too and i still love the aesthetic. but im glad womanhood is not as narrowly defined as this, it's interesting seeing how it so perfectly fits into stereotypical gender roles for women while balancing a vague idea of empowerment. i like it best as an aesthetic as opposed to how i want my life to be lived, which i think is how most people like it anyways like u said more self awareness. its sooo cute though
Oh man, I was way too much of a NLOG to fully appreciate Shoe Diva at her height!! But I know I was given things with her on them because I took French in high school. Love this aesthetic examination and I'm here for any other ones you do!
omg i've been seeing this aesthetic recently and it really makes me nostalgic for the bold and fun fashion of my childhood! i would love to see more videos like this!
I am obsessed with your Eyeliner. It matches the shape of your eyes so well and i think its really pretty. Also, the video caught me so off guard. I remember this aesthetic so fondly as one of my childhood memories. Thank you for bringing attention to it :)
I love these random deep dives on things and aesthetics I remember from my childhood in a nebulous way that I could never put a name on or know how to find. Thank you for your well presented, qualitative videos.
I love your videos! Well-researched, fun, and feminist! You touched on this, but I also love the legacy of shopping as it begun at department stores at the turn of the 20th century. Women finally had a social place to go without a chaperone without it being looked down upon. It’s also how we can show off that we make our own money and own our own things! Girl power! 🎉
thank you for giving it a name! I didn't know. I love this aesthetic and wished there was more media made with this intention of fun, girly, fashionista. Usually they shy away from this aesthetic. Just look at what they did with the live version of Winx :'( I was also obsessed with nintendo fashion games. Would love that nostalgic deep dive!
I'm an archaeologist, and I used Goffman's concept of the Total Institution (from his Asylums) to challenge the idea that the Roman army was a catalyst for cultural change in Syria. 😂 But despite that, I'm generally fun at cocktail parties, and a big fan of clothing history and 60s-90s popular culture...
I recognize the art styles! I didn’t know what to call it as a kid but now I can find some the art I used to like. I remember loving the drawings in the books Madonna wrote lol (the English Roses) and the art of makeup companies. I still have a makeup bag from Lancôme with that style.
I was a shoe diva as a child! My mom and I always shopped at thrift stores and one time I found all these tiny heels, obviously owned by an adult with small feet, but they fit 10-year-old me perfectly. My mom still calls me Imelda sometimes (as in Imelda Marcos, who famously owned 3000 pairs of shoes). Now I work with animals and wear sneakers every day 😂
Hello DAAAAHH-LING!! Until you are a crossdresser who needs to find shoes in size 13 or 14--THAT is when you REALLY become a "Shoe Maven"! Which is even MORE specialized than a: "Shoe Diva"!! And HOW could you NOT mention "Jimmy Choo" and "Louboutin" and "Blahnik"?!? SHAME on you! (hehe!) Enjoyed the vid, girlfriend--as usual!! Nicely "tongue in cheek" and charmingly "passive aggressive"!! And seriously, extremely well researched and presented intelligently and articulate OHH...and don't forget: Imelda Marcos! She is the ULTIMATE shoe hoarder! Also, looney as a Jay Bird. (and fashion can indeed be a "powerful tool of self-expression"...but ESPECIALLY when you have the ability to AFFORD it!) PS: and dear LORD--"Ethel"?!? BLEECH!! Call her "Margo"--a MUCH more alluring name from the era--and for YOU! Hugs!
Your Unsolved video has 225,000 views. Your other videos have like 25,000 views max. This should be telling you something. Not every channel sticks with the modus operandi it began with. I think you're a very good speaker. But as a straight male, most of your videos dont speak to me. But I'll keep checking in. 😊
Sorry, straight males aren’t my target demographic. I’m going to continue posting the content I like to post and allow my channel to grow the way I want it to.
Wild! Thanks for the shoutout!
Thank you for all your wonderful work!!! 👠🛍️
I had forgotten about this aesthetic. A staple was also that white fluffy little dog that was more of an accessory than a pet.
