@@ZackHoherchak it’s funny. I was just going to say that the best Teleprompter software I’ve used is on iOS and it uses AI to listen to my voice for the script so I don’t have to start in stop with a physical motion.
That will be the thing that causes me to switch from my clunky/huge/heavy GlideRight using PromptSmart Pro to the El Gato Prompter. I’d even save the subscription price for the PrompterSmart Pro app and constantly having to sign into my account. I’m looking forward to any reviews on this.
This is great news! I was just coming to comment that I love my Elgato Prompter but am surprised they don't yet have voice follow... and now you (almost) do. Yay!
I had this setup ages ago when I first got my foot pedal connected to my teleprompter. It saved me from a lot of ‘scroll-sasters’ and ‘cue chaos.’ No more teleprompter tantrums-just smooth sailing and foot-tapping fun!
I just got my pedal out and started using it with Prompter yesterday. I was trying to figure out how to get this exact setup and was stumped. Thanks for the tip! I do find I can use the Magic Trackpad for scrolling back and forward, but it's visible and the pedal is a better solution if you can get used to it.
Update!! I bought the Prompter and Pedal combo! Thanks for the tips and tricks on how to set it up.. On a side note the customer service line was awsome and Brandon with customer service really helped me out. But it all started with your videos about the Prompter.. Thanks again for all your videos!
Thanks so much, Tom. This is indeed a brilliant combination. I started using them together a few months ago. It has completely transformed the way I make videos. (And Prompter is, of course, fantastic for online meetings.) But thanks so much for the tip about the scrolling. I had been trying to work out how to do forward scrolling for ages! :-)
Tom, this is clutch - I primarily use the pedal for editing, and this is such a pleasant surprise. I saw your other video from last week on the prompter and found this one to develop my implementation optimization plan. I really appreciate this content!
I don't have the Elgato as I had purchased a larger prompter about a year before it came out. My favorite uses for any prompter are 1. for screen presentations. Im looking at the screen and the camera at the same time. 2nd. Looking at chat during a live stream. In both cases it creates a better vibe than looking away from the camera to look at the screen. To the viewers it feels like you are talking TO them rather than AT them. Normally I don't use scripts, just a list of bullet points to jog my memory. Again it creates a more natural feel of talking to the viewers rather than at them.
I don’t normally use scripts in my videos, but I pick this up for when I do sponsored inserts. So it wasn’t supposed to be an every day tool for me, but then I found out that I could broadcast the screen from OBS directly onto the Teleprompter it was a game changer. I do a lot of product reviews and I can now be looking directly at the screen reading the details I’m talking about it and I don’t have to look weird staring off to my left or my right. I also use it for zoom calls. I’ve had a bunch of people ask me how I managed to have the camera directly in front of my monitor like that and still see what’s going on. 😅
Thanks for the video Tom. I’ve been LOVING my Prompter and with the StreamDeck+ I’ve settled on buttons and dials to advance and scroll back if I want to redo by voiceover. Long thought about the pedal to add to my elgato arsenal but might wait to settle on my workflow with my two stream deck. (xL as plus)
The elgato stuff really seems to be well thought out and interworks well. I wish it was more affordable though. Question: To Tom and other prompter users - Do you script word by word, like a tv news reader, or do you just list talking points like people often do for presentations? I'd be interested to hear more about peoples' work flows and creative process. This seems especially interesting when Tom is capable of riffing in real time so well...!?
I usually use bullet points to stay on track. Sometimes I'll create what looks like a word-for-word script (you can sort of see it in a few examples here), but even then I still usually just read it more as bullet points. Sometimes writing the whole thing out helps my brain process the thoughts better, especially if it's a more technical topic.
I bought the prompter / foot pedal for the same reason as you. The prompter is great. Really pleased. The pedal is awful for a teleprompter control! It makes too much noise when you press it, particularly the centre one. Any suggestions? Thinking either I will have to use it barefoot so I can feel it better and perhaps press it lighter, or wrap it and my foot in a towel, or dismantle it and try and put some deadening material inside the unit itself. Previously I used bluetooth page turner foot pedals, which are lightly sprung with no clunk at all. PS just tried the voice control, not expecting much because it has been panned elsewhere, but in short test with a good mic close to mouth, it worked surprisingly well. Arguably better than footpedal. So far, anyway.
You can swap out the springs in the pedal to make it a little less tough to press, but I guess I've just learned to have a light touch 😁 There are times when I stomp the pedal too hard while talking though and you can definitely hear it on camera, so Voice Control has been a welcome update for sure.
@@tombuck Hadn't noticed the springs, thank you. Putting in the HARDER springs makes it easier to depress the pedal without the clack of it hitting the stop. Not ideal, but much better.
