    I started with the DesView and upgraded to the Elgato Prompter. The fact that the Elgato Prompter fits lightly onto my lens with rings is super awesome. The DesView did the same thing, but the Desview text is too small and I could never get the speed "just right". My only issue with the Elgao Prompter is the clunky software, but it has been improving. The one big annoyance I have is that when connected and you Alt-Tab, you have to look at the prompter to see which app you'll be alt-tabbing into.

    You may need another screen for the glide gear but you need a computer connection for the Elgato. If you’re going to be filming in the same location constantly then Elgato is the way to go . If you’re going to be filming in different locations and offices , glide gear is superior .

    First of all thank you for this review. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to make the switch from my GlideGear to the Elgato. For now I’m sticking with my GlideGear and PromptSmart Pro software. If, and when, Elgato improves their software to equal or improve what I’m already using I’ll most likely switch.
    As you mentioned the biggest issue I have with the GlideGear is my camera is literally trapped on it. It’s a total pain to remove it and every time I do the biggest issue I have is getting it back in the same spot. Just the slightest bit off and I the fabric that surrounds the lens gets in the way or the camera isn’t aimed exactly the way it was.
    The other issue is that PromptSmart continues to make me log back into their website to use their software. I’ll sit down ready to record only to find the script I saved isn’t on the app. It took a while for me to realize that I had to log into their website again. Logging into their app is also necessary to use the paid Pro features like voice activated scrolling. At least it will allow me to copy my scripts on my iPad and paste them directly into their app. Once I discovered this would work it’s saved me a lot of time.
    I’ve heard rumors that Elgato has heard our pleas and is working on improvements to their software. This includes a voice activated scrolling feature that’s supposedly in beta. It will be interesting to see if this actually happens.

      @donbullock-techihound Месяц назад

      @@mycosys Adding a quick shoe might be possible but it will raise the camera higher in the GlideGear and most likely cause it to be too high and cause the top of the teleprompter to come into view. There is still the issue of keeping the fabric shield that goes around the camera lens out of view.

  • @sushi_donut

    I've been thinking of the Prompter purely out of connivence and cutting bulk, since I've been using a Glide Gear-esque prompter setup with a android tablet & free wireless screen mirroring app. It's surprisingly stable, as a mirrored or secondary monitor setup for video conferencing/meetings/etc - but to your point it's bulky and requires a lot of steps. When I needed to read copy, I just used a simple web interface (but I'm sure there are plenty of other means currently.) Having said all that, I'm still on the fence and am now considering a dedicated 10" portable monitor instead of my tablet; Liliput for example have HDMI mirroring built into their firmware. Just wish the options weren't originally built for the DSLR era, as so many of us are streaming with mirrorless. -whew- Great video! haha, hope this helps someone?

    I have the elgato prompter. I like the simplicity. It does have some limitations. The screen resolution is a problem for MsTeams, as some of the buttons are not on screen. It also needs a power switch. I would like the option to turn it off. This is complicated by the fact that I cannot install software on my work laptop. I use it everyday Sony A7IV with 45mm F1.8 FF lens.

    We used to have a teleprompter operator who progressed the script more or less depending on her mood rather than the speed of your delivery. Even in the university TV studio we operated the teleprompter from the gallery, of course these were three camera ops and there was a teleprompter on each camera. I don't recall how the script was loaded though, I think it was just pasted from a document. But, yes an essential bit of kit.

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  Месяц назад +1

      @davidsillars3181 having someone else control my script would enrage me 🤣
      But yeah...it should be pretty easy for Elgato to take some hints from the other apps out there.

      @@DarkCornerStudios Back in the day we had several different options for the teleprompter. The talent could use a foot pedal to control the speed themselves, another presenter from the show could operate it or an extra camera operator or flood director could do it.
      During live news updates it was a camera operator or floor director on crew that had the job. The problem is that the updates were in Italian or Portuguese and none of the cameras operators or floor directors spoke either language. You had to get a sense at how the presenter was reading. Whether they seemed like they were rushing or dragging. But how do you do that when you can't read the printed text? The broadcast was in Toronto. So in the stories there would be words or names that you would recognize. Mayor David Miller. Prime Minister Paul Martin. They became the markers that you would use to judge how you were dealing.
      One day I was working on a Saturday on a Greek show where the producer sat in the studio and operated the prompter for his two on camera presenters. It helped him be close to the floor to support his talent. However, some issue came up in the control room and the director and technical director needed the producer to go in and settle an argument. So as a spare wheel (who later developed a spare tire) I had to jump in to operate the prompter. Forget not reading Greek. It doesn't use the same alphabet! I don't know if I made them race or if they sounded like they were having a stroke.
      I'll add that in my days working in the studio with inexperienced on camera presenters in local community cable television or in multicultural programming coaching some green talent I found that using a teleprompter is a good idea. But it is also another skill set to learn. So research, interviewing, writing, mic handling, turn and spin plus reading from a prompter.......while trying not to look like you are reading from a prompter. In my side hustle work working on videos all sorts of would be talent always thought they could reinvent the teleprompter with a friend or child holding paper or rolling sheets of paper. "Will this work?" Well it will be very clumsy and look like you're reading something below the camera, to the side of the camera etc.

    Respectfully, I disagree...I would've had the same sentiment when this device was initially released. The app sucked and yea the copy and paste option was hell annoying. Since then they have implemented quite a few features into the app and have even said that voice recognition is coming very soon. Recently they also added the ability to paste an entire document and it has it automatically format the doc into respective sections.
    Yes there's work to be done but I think it's solid for the price point.
