I couldn't stop smiling throughout this episode. What a stunning hideaway and breathtaking view to inspire such a delicious caponata. I'm glad you mentioned the raw, rustic nature of Lipari and it's people. It's so true it's not as glamorous like some of the other islands but it's authentic, real, and the beauty of its simplicity and ruggedness is what makes it so special. Love to see the walk to the church too!
Ps we met a wonderful deli owner in the main street in town by the name of Pina. I think her shop was called Pina's (can't remember) but she sells amazing food there. We bought most of our supplies there to make lunch and dinner and she is such a character.

As always, superb camera-work editing , story-telling, music, sound and COLOUR!!! Oh, the COLOUR!!! In the best spirit of magic realism, the food and the making of it seems to have a transformative effect that slowly infuses the narrative with increasing amounts of love, laughter and happiness. The aroma literally wafts off the screen. In the end, I feels it's appropriate to turn away and head down the hill, to leave you two in your private moment.
I have one very small aesthetic/technical critique which I hope you don't mind me giving. The pre-lap (J) edit where we see the hammock and hear the shower water start to flow before you cut to your back is a nice bit of editing. Then you cut to the shadow and the discarded bikini top, the stairs and then back to your back and then the exit down the stairs. While there's nothing wrong with the sequence per se, it seems backward to me. The discarded bikini top, which is a key contextual, visual element seems in the wrong place and therefore makes less sequential sense. But, the bikini top could function as a good establishing shot and would make more narrative sense by introducing the shower scene, if you cut to it first after the hammock shot, which would serve to explain the running water without totally revealing the shower scene, yet (i.e. building visual tension). Then cut to your back, the stairs (good predictive establishing shot of your exit point) to the shadow (nice shot and fixes the 180 degree rule problem of the stairs facing in the wrong direction), back to your back and then the shot of your legs exiting down the stairs. Inductive editing is tricky because you're building a sequence and telling a story in layers rather than linear time. For someone who is self taught, you are instinctively very good at it. But, even the best editor, sometimes needs fresh eyes on a project. If you were a run-of-the-mill RUclipsr, I wouldn't even bother. But, you are so good, I wanted to take the time to make this small suggestion. It's the old editor (and film teacher) in me. I tend to deconstruct and analyze film and video, almost subconsciously (and probably too much, LOL). I hope you're not offended. It should be clear, by now that I love your work and think you have a lot of talent.
This is so fun to watch. I’m an American girl that lived in Italy for three years and spent a year and a half or more in Sicily after going both places dozens of times as a former flight attendant, romantic and foodie.
My move started in 06 and did the very same thing you’re doing, going everywhere in Italy and enjoying every single magical experience. Making lifelong friends. Most of the time single but with a companion from there for a fun while too. No iPhone then and just a small cell phone, laptop, a camera and journal. Spent a lot of time in Tuscany, cooked everywhere, did help exchange, and just serendipitously went around the entire country and every corner of Sicily - all of your shows brings back so many memories. 😭 Some of the best years of my life. Such a great experience. Someday I’ll be back! Keep the great videos coming. xo

AdamBomb, hi. Just make sure you have enough money to survive if you’re not planning on working right away. But look up HelpX www.helpx.net/ if you don’t already have work lined up, you might be able to find some. It’s harvest time for grapes, and they can always use help. The best advice is really just to immerse yourself in the culture and talk to random Italians. They are some of the most inviting and helpful people I’ve ever met in my world travels.

AdamBomb Also, sorry I was busy in the middle of doing things when I wrote you, but another really important thing to know is just as many words of Italian as you can. Strike up a conversation with anyone. They have the best body language and tone. I didn’t know more than 10 words. Spaghetti, Grazie, ciao, Boun giorno, uno, due, tre, pizza, vino, Ti amo. Boh. Depending where you’re from, the language should be relatively easy to pick up. If you’re not unfortunate like me being from America and not having taken a foreign language until I was in my mid-30s, you’ll be golden. ☺️

Lipari is a dream.. I've been meaning to get there many times and even though I've been to Sicily several times, I never seem to get to Lipari.. there's too much to see in Sicily and so little time 💛❤

Leila A Thank you so much. It’s lovely of you to appreciate how much work even a few seconds of clips is in reality. Over the years I’ve become quite adept at filming discreetly without having to ‘stop life’ to get a shot. Also sometimes I make choices to respect the company I’m with. For example, I’m sure it would have been interesting to interview a local down in the town of Lipari but this would have ruined the point of staying in this remote casa, which was to detach from people and the world and just find a peace in isolation without rushing around trying to cram too much into a day. I tried to leave in a lot of the little moments in between talking to camera this episode so you could see a bit of behind-the-scenes and hopefully get a more natural feeling of what things are like in between shots. 📽😊

It is my dream to one day live here .
My father introduced me to the island in 2012 after I raised my family here in Australia and finally got the opportunity to travel .. I now have visited 4 times and can not get enough of lipari and the islands. Re connecting with family who still live there .
You are so true in your description of lipari .. it’s authentically Italian, raw, salt of the earth people within a setting of true beauty .
The life my father tells me about he had living there as a child and young teenager is just awe inspiring ..we also trek tracks he walked as a child from town to quatropanni,canetto,san Salvatore with views on the tracks to die for making each visit we have all. The more memorable and calling for our return before we leave .. I never want to leave I feel so relaxed every time I visit ..
I can’t forget to mention the taste of the tomatoes and fresh produce is like no other . That volcanic soil certainly has what it takes to make it all taste and grow so much better ..

mistiemoo1 my father always told us stories too. I finally got there in 2017 and again last year. Dad left for Melbourne when he was only 25 but he still remembers clear as day his life there. I don’t think I could live there but a month would be lovely.

I have been watching these little movies for a while, and finally had to post to say THANK YOU for these virtual escapes to place that I long to see and dream of escaping to; even though no country dare allow any Americans in right now and I’m a piano player in New Orleans with no way to work! 🤯 And like the thousands of New Orleanians with Italian heritage, my ancestors were from Ustica, Lipari, and Contessa Entellina. In fact, so many Sicilians came to New Orleans 100-150 yrs ago, that much of the “French” Quarter was known as “Little Italy!” 💚🤍❤️
This is the first video I’ve ever seen of Lipari and I must say that this place speaks to some strong ancestral root in my soul! Again, watching these has been extremely HEALING, and with all of the chaos going on here in the U.S., I just can’t thank you enough! 🙏❤️🙋🏻♀️

Kylie, your episodes are such immersive experiences for senses and soul - incredible scenes framings sequences, engaging entertaining and informative. I’m always watching episodes on bigscreen with adequate sound-system, to do your art justice and get the most out of them. Showing more of behind-the-scenes and (finally) including your partner dialogue and dynamics, makes it all the more delightful and relatable - always resonant, also when the style of narrative is different. The enormous kicks of passion you get out of the simplest things in life, like shopping celery or the scent of herbs, are quite adorable - and very relatable - few seem to get it. My experience is, that there's few things more primal essential and bonding, than a couple making dinner together. You seem a quite adorable couple.
I’m guessing that house on Lipari will be fully booked after this. Love that house, robust, rustic, gorgeous views, secluded for silence - immersion for awareness of nature and energy, those there before you and with you now - a place for aware reflection (and careful grocery-planning). My greatest joy comes, not only from your thoughtful brilliant work and philosophy, but from finding people like you online, with a heightened awareness for aesthetics beauty knowledge and the detailed subtleties of what surrounds us all. Bringing that sensitive awareness into being for others, as part of the mundane, is what true artist and philosophers do.
bzznz I say it every week to you but it bears repeating: the little details you notice, your appreciation for all the elements required to make a production and a story transporting just give me such a boost of energy and motivation and optimism. Optimism because I too, find it refreshing to know that people like you exist on the internet in a world that can sometimes feel shallow, ignorant and arrogant. Culture is what matters the most in life because the beauty or misery that is one's life cultivates from the culture that is present. This is one reason, out of so many, as to why I have always loved Italy. I've always wanted to live there and I watch your videos inventively. Very nice, Kylie.
Only in Sicily I have seen the white figs definitely my favourite with white wine. I was in Palermo last year and the caponata is totally different to the caponata in Catania.

Bellissimo video! Ti do un consiglio da siciliano sulla caponata! Se pensi che le melanzane è meglio cuocerle con poco olio piuttosto che fritte sappi che ti sbagli perché essendo 90% acqua... Assorbiranno l'olio comunque, quindi se ne metti tanto, lo faranno in modo più veloce mentre se ne metti poco, ne assorbiranno di più e diventeranno più "pesanti". Cmq ti adoro

Joyfully watched this with my husband tonight after we moved here to Sicily just two days ago! Moved from the US to Syracusa/Catania, where he is from. Caponata is one of my all time favorite Sicilian dishes I have fallen in love with. Because these places, the shots from the drone are so amazing, so gorgeous that they are hypnotic. I can´t believe there is a place with such blue...woow...I wonder how you manage to film all that by yourself. What a hard work it must be. That´s why I thank you a zillion times for sharing those amazing shots with us. These landscapes are so dramatic, so delicate, so romantic. The details in your filming, the tiny flowers and the sunset, the blue tiles , the fruit, that beautiful purple from the eggplant while making capponata (we love it here in Brazil). I absolutely love the way you grasp these moments. Details make a difference, hum? Beauty lies on them. They have to be revealed. There´s so much poetry in them. Also, while watching I was so , so happy for you because you´re full of joy, your eyes shine bright when you are close to your bfriend. I feel as if he makes you truly happy! When one our kids started culinary school years ago they had a day when they were supposed to cook a family recipe. Josh fried egg plant, zucchini and panelli. The chef told him that frying vegetables in olive oil is not a cooking method. But it is is Sicily. In fact, the secret to our vegetarian lasagna in our restaurant was the layer of fried eggplant. PS, we also fry the capers.
Watching this is a great way to spend a rainy Sunday morning. Once again, outstanding.
