- Welcome to Part 1 of my Sicilian island series. If you've ever dreamed of travelling to Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, Lipari or Sicily during the summer, this first episode should give you some idea of the beauty, the volcano, the history, the ties to the golden era of Italian cinema, the Italian food and the local way of life. As you know, I am a great lover of vintage cinema and the love story of Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini is one of my favourites. You can find many more videos on my channel about how I learned Italian and moved to Italy. Making these episodes alone is very time consuming and expensive and if you would like to support my work, you can find my Patreon page here:

You can find my recipes and other information on moving to Italy, learning Italian or my filmmaking equipment on my website:

WOW! This cinematography paired with the music and the beautiful stories is absolutely breathtaking!
This is not a youtube video, this is a masterpiece! I 100% would go to the cinema and pay for it.
What a beautiful love-story, both Mr. Rossellini and Mrs. Bergmann seem like fascinating people, thank you for sharing the story with us!
Hearing you host talk about how he was able to fulfil his dream and the way he sees his beautiful island is also truly inspiring. You really do have the talent to find beautiful stories...you see I totally could go on and on about your talent forever.
I am so glad that you found someone to share all those beautiful memories with. It gives me hope for myself.
I hope you are feeling better by now, sending lots of love and good energy your way 💛🌻
Judith xx Gosh Judith, after weeks of work, it’s so rewarding to read that people like you appreciate the effort and all the little details. Thank you for making me feel so special. ♥️📽👩🏼💻
Kylie Flavell Nothing makes me happier than hearing that I could make a fellow aesthete and sensitive soul feel special. Because you are and you can be very proud of it, it’s certainly not always easy to see and feel the world this way 💛
@@KylieFlavell I'm truly emotional watching your SIcily playlist today. I will be subscribing to your Patreon to support you and sharing your channel as well. This is much needed food for my soul! I am 48 and from Aruba. I discovered my love for Italia at age 22 and have been fortunate enough to travel throughout Italy and much of Europe three times, but never made it to Sicilia which I so regret. Thank you for this work of art!
Indeed. Incredibly Beautiful. All of my emotions are spilling over.
Loved the interview with the Strombolano Milanese. The Chopin Nocturnes Opus 9, N.1 immediately sweeps you up into another dreamlike dimension. Combined with the amazing landscapes of Stromboli, it adds a pure and nostalgic feel. Bravo and well done!
At a time where traveling internationally is impossible, I cannot express my gratitude for your videos and the inspiration it brings me. I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Tuscany last October, and I have yearned to go back since. In lieu of traveling back, I'm happy to be watching your travels through Italy in such a cinematic way as consolation. Grazie mille per la tua arte!!
Julien Boissonnault Thank you so much, Julien! This means a lot to me.
Kylie, thank you once again for this stunning, thought provoking video. I am always amazed at your ability to capture beautiful imagery and pair it with philosophical and poetic discussions. Seeing the beauty in the world around us is one thing. Seeking to understand the why and how of that beauty is taking it to a deeper level. Thank you for bringing the joy of Italy into my life in a time when I cannot go there!
Nancy Mullen Thank you for your continued kindness, Nancy.
Kylie, your videos are so pure, kind and truly made with love, they tell such a beautiful stories of beautiful people, it's so inspiring!
Beautiful and such a romantic story, and captivating cinematography! Your personal touches and story truly make this an incredible experience. Thank you Kylie!!!
I am so pleased you viewed the volcano from a safe place. We lost 21 people last December when Whakaari (White Island) erupted, here in NZ. It reminded us all that volcanoes must be respected.
Wonderful video. I've traveled the globe. Italy is at the top of my favorite list. Not just for its beauty, but the people, and their culture. I loved sitting in the open air cafes watching the families, couples, and friends strolling arm in arm enjoying the evening, and each other. They seemed to have the secret of how to truly enjoy life. I was in Naples at the time. I remember speaking to my brother and trying to convey this sentment at the time. He spoke of his time there in the navy and spoke of it as a trash heap. I was shocked that he saw it so differently. My time there was magical. I felt its ancient history, the richness of life, the food, the smells, cobbled streets, and always the beautiful blue mediteranian. I wanted to live there.
Pat Herron Sounds like you got to the core essence of Italy, Pat. 😊😊😊
This is so sublime and poetic and ethereal, and just simply stunning. I hope you allow yourself to breathe and re-boot and sleep and dream and rest, because I feel like you are channeling your dreams, heart and soul into these films. I feel you are giving away a little part of your soul to all of us who sit transfixed by your rolling images, they are so precious. So please, don't ever let that creativity burn out because it would be indescribably sad for the planet. Because I really think there are such huge things to come for you in the future. You are so so talented, and have such a beautiful eye for cinematography that is rare. I can't wait for part 2. Or any other stunning film you release here on youtube, or in Hollywood for that matter. But until then ... :) Grazie Mille!!!
samantha karl What a compassionate soul you are. Thank you for such heartfelt concern and support. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
You have incredible talent. You are a master of beautiful lyrical languages and you use it intelligently to relate your story.
Ugh, this was so worth the wait! What a charming man and a beautiful conversation! Those shots were incredible too. Thank you for this Kylie, we all appreciate the time and creativity you invest into your films. When I have a bit more money in my account I would love to become a patron! x

Bella Sicilia.
Can someone pls tell the song played on piano? It's beautiful!
It looks like you are distracted from your journey, married and settled down.
You broke so many hearts, including mine 💔💔
non ti faccio nessun complimento perché tanto ne ricevi a bizzeffe, il mio sarebbe superfluo..
Però voglio provare a fare un indovinello.
Secondo me nella Parte 2 o 3 or whatever ci mostrerai Salina, magari ispirandoti al film “Il postino” leggerai una poesia di Pablo Neruda durante le riprese dei luoghi incantevoli dell’isola..
Chissà!? 😃
Luis Muc un complimento sincero non è mai superfluo ☺️
Kylie Flavell É vero, i complimenti sinceri sono balsamo per l’anima 😊
Buonasera everybody. On Friday and Saturday, I got a strange migraine and was seeing more than one volcano 🤪 so I was in bed unable to look at a screen or open my eyes for 24 hours. Sorry it is late! I hope you like it! ♥️♥️♥️
Blessed 🙏💐
Oh my gosh, my Prayers are for your fast recovery, we need you my friend.. You have made many people happy. Thanks for sharing your life and times with those that watch your channel.
Absolutely NO need to apologize. Ever. 💞Do take care Kylie. (I've had several severe migraines this past month, I know the pain and I feel for you.). This vlog was well worth waiting for; MAGNIFICO, davvero mozzafiato! Blessings (🇨🇦) xx
Like it and delighted you recovered!
maybe the body is sort of getting tuned up with energy of Stromboli
This is why I became a Patreon (possibly your first). You bring out the best in the people and places you make your films about. You let people open up and show their souls, as you do yourself. Art comes from the soul, craft from the mind, you are an artist.
Michael Garlick YES, Michael - you were my first Patreon and I think about that every week when I see your name at the end of the credits! And what touched me perhaps the most was that all this time, you’ve always believed in supporting me for the element of my work that is probably my most fulfilling - in-depth conversations. Essentially, trying to understand others and help them be understood. 🙏
@@KylieFlavell I produced hundreds of TV broadcasts in California and in NZ. From this experience having worked with dozens of hosts I spotted your special ability from the very first video of yours I saw. There is every probability my next production will be based in Cannes France. Kiwis and Aussies are neighbours anyway but Cannes and Italy are too.
Beautiful island. What a beautiful, warm man he is too.
Finally 😍 this makes me feel like I am watching a romantic movie! You have an amazing talent bless you and will continue watching your wonderful videos 🌷❤ hope you are staying safe 😊
Rania So happy. 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you Rani!
Thank you for just using subtitles and not trying to translate as he speaks. It kept the flow and energy in a wonderful way.
I prefer this too thanks Kylie!
angel7823344534 Thank you. Most of the content where I translate was originally made for TV because American and Canadian networks won’t accept shows with subtitles - they tell me their audiences won’t read them. I believe Netflix also stated 70% of their audience will turn off a show unless it’s dubbed rather than subtitled.
@@KylieFlavell That's quite annoying, but people are quite lazy.
Kylie Flavell that’s a really sad thing, people are getting more and more lazy :( personally, i’d prefer to watch a show with the original audio and just read the translations cuz you’re learning as well. All the technology around us and yet we dont take advantage of it, just sad. I guess it’s true that as our phones get smarter, we get dumber :(
@@KylieFlavell How horrible, dubbing is the worst.
{sigh} people, support her on Patreon . This is worth it all
Jennyfer Parra super kind of you! 😘
DONE!! ❤️❤️❤️
Magical!!!! I’m so excited for part 2
Absolutely stunning. My husband and I watched tonight while eating a delicious pasta dinner I made and talking about when we will be able to travel again. Love from NYC.

Coming From the Caribbean, These videos are better than anything else I could find on Italian Culture on RUclips! ThankYou.
Suvir Vasudeva so kind!!!
As a senior in high school in America I can only dream of doing what you do. I live vicariously through you Kylie! Well that and I have an unhealthy spending habit of rouje and Parisian clothing lusting for a life elsewhere.

After watching your documentaries, I am always left with this feeling that I don't know how to explain. It's meditative and introspective in a spiritual way. Thank you !
palide2003 OH WOW! This is the feeling I always hope to leave people with. 💙🙏
@@KylieFlavell I completely agree with the comment above...you are a true unique blessing!
If I could love this a million times over... I really enjoy these conversations with the locals, hearing about their journeys and life perspectives. Just listening to them speak makes me feel more connected to my Italian roots. Can’t wait to see more Kylie! ❤️
Clarissa Addante So glad you liked it, Clarissa. I much prefer going a bit deeper than just asking one or two banal questions but then I worry that others may not find locals as interesting as I do. So your comment is appreciated!
Kylie Flavell There is a definite authenticity when you chat with the locals. I wouldn’t worry about your questions being banal, you’re doing a great job! If anyone out there doesn’t agree, take comfort in knowing you have at least one person who is a fan!
Kylie, you have such a way with words and an incredible talent for videography. I'm crying tears of joy, longing and gratitude. Thank you for your kindness and giving us such a visual treat during these difficult times. 💗
Emily A. Ohhhh thank you sweet Emily. 💓💕
This isn't just a video. This is a film. Thank you, Kylie. You are a woman of substance and it shows in your work. Grazie.
mzlilybriscoe Such a sweet comment. You make me feel very special. 💙
"When you are passionate, everything is possible..." What beautiful words from that man... Continue to realize your dreams, Kylie, you give me the hope I can realize mine as well... A particularly "wow" film, certainly my favorite from you until now. Gratitude and take care of you! (no need to apologize, we all have bad days and need a break when our body claims for it ;-)
Kylie- each week we receive a gift from you and they just keep getting better and better. A feast for the eyes, ears and balm to the soul- that is what you give us all. In these troubled times, this beautiful escape means more than you can ever imagine. I wish you and all who read this health, safety and to know the pure joy of the simple things in live.
T Darish What beautiful words. Thank you so much. 🥰🥰🥰
I adore this story. My fraternal grandparents came from Sicily. It is a dream one day to go there. This man has the confidence my father had. He was the most amazing man in my life. I will get there one day.
Ok Kylie I don't know from where to start or what to tell you. YOUR VIDEOS (When I say videos I feel like it's not fair) YOUR STORY TELLING MASTER PIECES are a break from the daily ugliness we witness everyday from the news and the drama. In a fair world you would be well paid and well known. Because your work does not need to go through stupid algorithms. Your work is a therapy for all the ones who wonder. THANK YOU KYLIE PLEASE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING,WE NEED IT. You have no idea how much you inspire me, and remind me that there is still beauty in this world outside the narrative that we are sold of typical job, living to pay the bills and enjoying live occasionally. I truly appreciate the passion and the efforts you put in these master pieces ❤️
Young Mind This means more to me than you could know. I’m here still mentally exhausted from making this and you just put such a grin on my face. Thank you!
I wish I could ‘Like’ Kylie’s films x 1000 but your comment as well👍👍👍👍🌺
I’ll be 18 in January and I’m from California my, ever since I was little I was always attracted to the Italian culture and the atmosphere of Italy I found your channel a couple weeks ago and seeing this video really makes me want to go to Italy and probably move there and raise my future children if god blesses me of having children of my own :)
It starts with a dream!❤️
Loved this Kylie, he is such a sincere down to earth man. And your words are so captivating! Beautifully shot film --because it truly is a little film --so amazingly shot and told.
I loved this! I've always loved Italian culture and dreamed of going to Italy one day. A few months ago I decided to learn Italian and go visit Italy within the next year (post CV-19 of course). When I finally get to visit I want a truly immersive experience beyond doing the usual tourist activities. I want to speak with Italians in their language and learn about their country from them. I've watched so many travel vlogs of Italy that I find them boring since they offer little in terms of culture. Your channel is exactly what I was looking for. Also, your Italian is excellent. You sound very natural. Thanks for the video and I look forward to the rest of your content!
One thing I admire about your videos is your use of inductive visual language. You contextualize the locale in layer after lusciously beautiful layer as if you were baking a mille feuille. I worked in the film and media industry for many years and now teach film at university and recognize in you, not just a very talented film-maker, but one with a special and unique voice and a mind's eye with incredible visual clarity.
Brian Lewis What a remarkable compliment, Brian. Thank you so much for noticing such detail. 🙏
This video is a masterpiece. I loved every single minute of it. Thank you Kylie for this.
You have inspired me.
Bryan Nilo Thank you with all my heart, Bryan. 🙏
Kylie, you have outdone yourself with this one. Intensely beautiful and poetic. An undercurrent of quiet unrelenting passion. The music couldn’t be more perfect. It’s all love, just love. You must have felt this project very deeply. And something’s been awakened in me and I don’t know what it is yet, but something’s changed. Thank you.
By the way, this video and the last couple of videos I did not receive notification when they were put out. I might have been accidentally deleted from your list?
Murielle Alloun This is so kind of you. Thank you Murielle. The depth of your appreciation is so rewarding for me. That’s sad about the notification - I wonder if others have this problem too? Have you also clicked the little bell, as well as subscribing? Sorry it’s so complicated!
Thank you so much Kylie! This was lovely - the cinematography is amazing! I am missing Italy so much this year, and something about your videos makes me feel like I am there, tasting the food, chatting with locals, and relishing in the beautiful scenery. Your videos provide a much needed escape, and have me dreaming about the next time I can see Italy again. ☺️

Kylie, this was the most beautiful cinematic episode you have done to date in my opinion. Thank you so much! Your words, your passion for storytelling and love and respect of Nature and the locals you interview always fill me with a sense of happiness and wonder. Here we go again: Bella Italia!
Kylie if you will continue your beautiful work, then one day I am sure you will receive the Oscar, Golden Globe or some similar prize. And perhaps someone will write a book about you and you will leave the fingerprints to the next generation. Over the years by practising you can create new ideas and more great films. 🤞
Julia Juliaana So kind, Julia!
I found myself immersed in your storytelling. That teaser preview - eerie ominous dissonant score - chills and heightened awareness. What a dramatic way to set the scene and mood for Stromboli. Leading in through the wartime story of the woman from Latvia and the romance between Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini (playing out her story). With dramatic close-up night-footage of eruption, weaving in the contemporary presence of “Iddu”, by grounding it all with in-depth intimate conversation with Guiseppe. How brilliantly you, through people, implicitly lay out the aesthetics of the mundane in a far grander narrative. My mind, soul and hearth expanded, yet unable to explain exactly how and why.
Your perspective, that gravitates towards in-depth intimate authentic conversations, is part of what cinematic storytelling seem to have lost, to increased escapism from it. You provide escapism to reality, through aesthetics of the mundane. The encounters and connections between people - relatable and recognisable as the randomness that frames life - that resonates. As pivotal events in life can be due to random encounters, that lead us onto a new path of choices.
Quite Unique ✨✨✨
bzznz Thank you. You consume my work so deeply and it is truly gratifying for someone like me who is so careful with every detail. ♥️
@@KylieFlavell Thank You Kylie, for sharing refreshing layered perspectives through your beautiful skilful art and delightful luminous persona. Appreciating how much attention you put into every detail to compose an immersive resonant experience, I find myself increasingly introspective and curiously analytic to what makes it resonate - I’m of course also trying to decipher how you do it, because you are brilliant at it. ✨✨✨✨✨
Watching your videos is therapeutic for me. Thank you for everything you do. You are a special soul.
