Thank you so much for watching!
The sun has not yet risen, but my husband and I are already standing outside waiting for the bus. It will take us to the place where our life in Mindanao began. Another adventure, but today it's not ours..
One of our subscribers wanted to come to the Philippines and contacted Boria. This would be his first trip so he needed a guide. We arranged to meet him at the Davao airport.
After an hour of waiting, we finally saw Denis coming towards us.
Denis was tired from the trip and we hurriedly headed to the bus stop.
I found an apartment in Tagum on Facebook a few days before Denis arrived. I also called the apartment to confirm that we would be arriving soon. Everything was great until we arrived at the address given.
When we arrived, we were told that there were no vacancies and that they had not received any calls from us. This was ridiculous since we had only talked to them a couple hours before. We tried calling their number again, but we couldn't get through.
We're not going to let this unpleasant event ruin our day. Denis needed to buy some things, so we went to the mall. We decided that he would stay with us until we find him a new apartment.
At home, mom and I are making dumplings for dinner.
The next day Boria took Denis to the Mako center to show him the market. They also want to ask the locals who rents an apartment nearby.
Denis is fascinated by the neighborhood.
For lunch mom and I made grilled fish, vegetable salad and crepe.
The next day we helped Denis move into his apartment.
After we moved his things, we drove to the city of Tagum.
Denis needs stable internet for his work. We went looking for a company that could install wi-fi.
We went to the market. We'll buy some groceries and tell Denis what things he can use in his household.
I bought some cassava and a bunch of red bananas.
After wandering around the market, we got in the multicab and drove home.
Today I am going to make one of my favorite desserts - cassava suman, or grated cassava wrapped in banana leaves. But first, we need to ask for banana leaves from the neighbors.
According to Filipino beliefs, a butterfly is a sign that a deceased relative is making himself or herself known. I told my husband that it might be my late grandmother visiting me.
I washed and peeled the cassava and then grated it finely. It takes a lot of time, but it's worth it. The cassava juice is a little bitter, so it needs to be squeezed. I then added coconut cream, condensed milk, a little sugar and a pinch of salt.
To soften the banana leaves, they need to be heated over an open flame. This way the leaves will not break and fall apart.
The wrapped cassava needs to be steamed for about an hour.
This dessert is perfect with tea.
Denis has only lived in his new apartment for one day and asked us to find him another place to live. This apartment has very thin walls, so he can hear everything that happens outside. He could not work properly. It was a culture shock for him.
I found another apartment in Tagum city, and we helped him move again. On the first floor of the building where this apartment there is a laundromat, a canteen-carinderia and a bakery. There is a hospital nearby and the city center is only 10 minutes away. We hope Denis will be comfortable here.
Denis wanted to buy clothes and a backpack. We took him to our favorite place, a ukai ukai or second hand store.
This store is very big. They sell not only clothes, but also hats, bags, shoes and kitchen items.
Boria found some new swim trunks. They still have the tag on them.
We bought fish and vegetables at the market and headed home.
The Internet is a very powerful thing. It allows you to watch videos taken on the other side of the world, communicate with people and much more.
The last few days have been a bit tiring because of the problems. But we are very happy that people are discovering the beauty of the Philippines through our videos. And we intend to continue to show you the authenticity and simplicity of island life."

There are quite a few Filipino women who are married to their foreign husbands who are vloggers like Avelovinit I love her vlogs, Kito Family and Inday Roning, so many Pinay vloggers but I only watch those that have interesting vlogs and I also watch other foreign vloggers again only those that have interesting and educational subjects. Island life is a new additional vlogger that I newly discovered and follow. To be honest there are so many Filipino vloggers on You Tube but that aren’t interesting to watch.

Hi. Thanks for your new video. Waited with anticipation. Darlene, you are such a capable lady. It’s not easy settling down at another place where you don’t speak the dialect. I experienced that. My first exposure to Cebuano dialect was when I was 21 years old. It was a big struggle for me so I communicated with locals in English and Tagalog. I did learn the dialect and was able to translate and interpret (for foreign event speakers) from English to Cebuano. Well, that was donkey years ago. I’m 64 years old now….Best regards to your husband and mother-in-law.

That was very kind and generous of you guys to help out a subscriber and go above and beyond with finding him a suitable place to settle and handle the complications that ensued. It seems his personality is not as accomodating as Boris' and Mama Katya's which is vital for adjusting to island living. Having an open mindset helps a lot in decreasing the the stress of change. He might have been more suited to stay in the modern BGC area in Manila first before going straight to the province. He did look overwhelmed like a fish out of the water. It is very intimidating to go to a foreign country by yourself, especially with a language barrier and immediately faced with no place to stay. You guys were Godsend in helping him - he might have ran straight back to the airport otherwise and booked the next flight out of the country! 😂 Thankfully, the second apartment was so much better than the first with the amenities conveniently below. Good job Darlene! How long was his stay and was he there to find a wife? Did his experience meet his expectations and what was his final impression? I hope things went well for him.
Those dumplings and your cassava suman look so delicious! You are so patient, but I'm sure freshly made is much better tasting and outweighs the convenience of the frozen ones. Love seeing Mama Katya's tea set in use again - so pretty! Suman with tea does seem like a perfect pairing for merienda.
The next episode looks like a lot of adventure. Excited to see it soon! Thank u for this vlog! ❤

He needs to move to a nicer place quiet and secured but that place will be a little expensive if he’s willing to pay. The province is very different, life is laid back and not as what a foreigner like him will expect. Tagum city is nice lots of cafes and trendy restaurants. Becoming Filipino Kulas always like to visit his friends there and he enjoys the province. It takes time to adjust to a new whole culture of a new country esp. coming from Russia. Hope he gets acclimated sooner but he just needs to be patient if he wants to live in the province. Otherwise, he can move to bigger cities like Cebu or Makati in BGC

There are lots of Condos in Davao City proper for rent. Verdon Parc Condo at Ecoland, Davao City has still lots of vacancy. That is situated beside the Indonesian Embassy and a meters away from St.Paul's College. Proximal also to SM, Ecoland near the Terminal Bus of Davao City where you can ride a trisikad or an e-bike if you don't want jeep or taxi because there are lots of short-cuts to pass. This new high-rising building of this DMCI property is just infront of our own house. But I guess, apartment proximal to Davao City is more economical than condos depending on the kind of unit you will like. There are variety of units to choose from according to your own preference.

Your friend Denise is right. I myself is not comfortable with an accomodation that is so chaotic and noisy. He will really be disturbed. I myself had seen the trouble before he arrived on that place. I could not stay in a place with an unrepaired shower, no internet, and a chaotic, noisy environment even I myself is a Filipino. That is why privacy is very important in a Boarding house. You are not the only one who is living there, that is why you must modulate your voice. So do not live in a place where a family is renting where there were lots of children running and screaming around. Usually children and adults are becoming more noisy when other people are present. That is common among Filipinos that they become more disturbing when a Visitor has come, because they too are excited. And we must understand that Denise needs his privacy even just a bit. And you ironically seldom find it in a Province when the City has more silence in condos and apartments? So we cannot blame him. And I really admire the hospitality of the couple especially Darlene who assisted him all throughout his needs. On the otherhand, I do commend the ability of the Owner of that first apartment to attend the repairs despite of the inconveniences. At least he tried. Salute to Darlene for being a good Cook and a good Tourist Guide! 👍💝🌼💖

It was my 3d or 4th day in Ph. And I moved at weekends... They have celebrated something, I don't know what. Only later I understood that sining and drinking all night - can be at weekends only. And I had a temerature - accomdation.

@@ДенисПрокофьев-у6щ You better transfer in apartments that are quiet and has no family especially not within Squatters area or a semi-populated place where people can get in and out. There are lots of Apartments out there owned by one Caretaker or OFWs. Single accomodation are also available like Townhouses. In faraway provinces, they cost around 3k-5k to 10k pesos depending on your negotiation. Anywhere that has a family with children or a nearby store or houses that operates a videoke is an annoying place. Because singing for them is their relaxation and bonding time among Relatives and Neighbors. Only Condos or Apartments within Davao City you can find a much peaceful place to stay because they have strict restrictions and regulations.
