I had to stop the video half way through to write this comment. The RUclips algorithm machine sent me to this video this morning and I’m so grateful. Your level of detail, patience and thoughtfulness to the audience is inspiring. Thank you
Welcome to the lovely experience that is a Vincent Briggs video, It's like your soul having a spa day. I was so happy to see this come up in my subscriptions as I've watched all the others. Going to have to dole it out to myself slowly over the next day or so for maximum delight (and progress on the handstitching I'm doing while enjoying it).
@@dinahfromkabalor Sadly, RUclips's algorithm 'downgrades' videos where the viewer doesn't watch to the end in one sitting. It sees you as an 'incomplete viewer'; ranking it as an 'abandoned watch' by assuming that the video wasn't engaging enough to hold your interest. Engagement algorithms are a rather blunt tool, and sadly they often harm content creators.
'I put my dragons facing inwards so they can see each other and say hello, because they are of course good friends.' Absolutely delightful! For very thin masking tape, modelmaker's tape goes down as thin as 1 mm - Tamiya, Humbrol, and AK Interactive are common brands. Tamiya also does masking tape that can go around curves.
Yup! I have some 2mm Tamiya and you can get surprisingly tight curves with it because it's got just a bit of stretch. Car pinstriping tape works similarly. Both can be pricey tho unless you find them on sale. But yea, the modelmaking, miniature painting, and Gunpla hobbies (and car detailing lol) niche is a great source for teeny masking tapes. There's also masking fluid (liquid silicone?) that can be painted on and pelled off. Not sure how it would act on fabric/leather tho.
To quote a larping friend: "Be careful with leather dye, for you are also made of leather." I don't know how to set dye in leather, but if you figure out how to get the purple to stop purple-ing you, that would be a good blog post!💜
It's definitely good at sticking to skin and only skin! I've tried laying wet scraps on paper towel, and soaking them in both cold and boiling water, but still the only things it's stained are me and another pair of light gloves. (Though thankfully that was only one tiny spot)
I am so absolutely mesmerized by your skills!! The fact youve made 9 pairs and have already made so much progress is amazing!! I am so glad to be recommended your channel. Youre an awesome human being, keep up the great work!!
I dont know what magic it is, but while usually i watch youtubers on 2x speed and still get distracted often, I was utterly absorbed by this. I just sat and watched the whole hour at single speed. Entrancing work. And the gloves themselves are beautiful. Thank you.
this isn't meant to be a jab, but you might be watching too much tiktok and are used to fast-paced short form content. i used to be the same way, but then I stopped watching tiktok and feel normal again lol
@@GossamerAtara lol I'm thirty, I don't have a tiktok! Or any social media really. I am also immune to tiktoks allure because it's all just random videos. I love how long your videos are. So many shots that are not sped up of drawing, cutting, stitching, painting. It's so comfortable to watch. I savour it. (Also a Canadian friend of mine suggests Tandy.)
I have no idea how I ended up here, but I am so very happy it did. Even though the period is not my jam, nor am I the target audience for menswear, I was utterly captivated. Someone mentioned in the comments how thoughtful you are of the audience and after binge watching your every video I have to agree whole-heartedly. I really appreciate how clear you make the instructions (like in the leafkerchief as of 'don't flip it, rotate the pattern') and why and where. I found it immensely helpful to have someone say 'don't do this because X instead of just 'don't do this, period'. Helps with my scatterbrain.
The striped gloves are so beautiful, and I absolutely love the way you step through the entire process of figuring out how best to make something--it's absolutely fascinating. Thank you!
I’m only 20 minutes into the video, but I had to pause to comment! I love your explanations and demonstrations of everything, and I feel like I’ve gained some knowledge already. Please keep making videos like this. It’s very enjoyable to watch. I’ve subscribed!
I am definitely going to be using this life hack in the future. I cut my painter’s tape all the time, and I have literally never even considered doing this. It’s quite genius, really.

I’m so glad the algorithm suggested me this video. I understood very little about the whole glove making process but was still invested into watching it all. I don’t subscribe to many but if your other videos are like this, I’d watch them all.
I saw your reconstruction photos a few years ago and only recently found your channel. I can't stop watching it. You do so much. And it's very beautiful, thank you for your work
Absolutely amazing work as always! I don't know what it is exactly, but i really love Vincents videos. Something about the slow, but not to slow tempo, the immensely soothing voice, the soft lighting, giving just the right amount of detail to make me feel I can follow along and actually "get it" without ever wanting to skip any "irrelevant" or too lengthy parts. It is like they have just the perfect balance. As if they achieve the actual "optimum level of arousal" for my autistic brain. It is almost as if I can feel my brain purring the way a much content cat does.
(I realize that made it sound almost like something sexual, it is really not, not in any way shape or form! "Optimal level of arousal" simply means just the right level of mental stimulation for a person to be at their optimal level of awareness or performance)
I don’t know a thing about sewing or fashion, but I love history and I loved your video. I usually keep videos playing in the background while I’m doing something else, but my eyes were glued to the screen on this one. Your craftsmanship is incredible.
I’m so glad you’ve released another video. I always sit down to work on some fiddly crochet project while watching your new videos. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gloves AND keeping me company while I work on my own project
lovely video, and thank you for taking the extra time and material to make them up in a non-patterned version for the ease of our eyes. I appreciated that. beautiful gloves!!
Ohhhh it felt like I was being let in on an excellent secret when you moved the thumb on the card stock pattern by cutting around it and flipping it. Magic!
Those are WONDERFUL, so whimsical and pretty. Also, your video is very well made, it's very nice to watch, even when some of the technical parts get a little complicated for my sewing competences. It's always fun and happy to watch very competent craftsmen work, but the fact that you show all the steps and errors and readjustments and self-teaching makes it even more interesting. Thank you for the very nice moment in your company.
The algorithm brought me here even though the only sewing I can do is mending, but everything was explained so clearly I actually understood the process lol The gloves came out amazing! The Art Nouveau design on the dye-painted ones is beautiful, as well! And the masking tape and wax paper trick is SO GOOD, I'm definitely going to use that in my own crafts at some point. 👍
I now remember why I have a drawer dedicated to “Wardrobe Maintenance” when I was younger I had a very enviable figure that required alterations and I wore better crafted & better fabric objects. I had polish for every color of leather. Until a home fire I had extra buttons from every corresponding garment. I have a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and customized clothing. It also makes a difference that so many clothes are such fast fashion and made very cheaply!!! Thank you!
I am utterly in love with the craftsmanship and outcome in this video. I've been following you on Tumblr for ages but haven't been active there for a while. I'm so happy I stumblede across your youtube channel today.
Fifty seconds into your video has shown me all the evidence necessary to know I’m in the right place, and am now twice as eager for the rest, as well as exploring your channel 😊
Yes, gloves are a gratifying aggregation. One day I'll make black pair with bright orange stitching. The leather I used had a fused tricot back which made them stronger and easy to sew.
Vincent, I really appreciate how thorough you were in this tutorial! A lot of costuming youtube tutorials can be hard to follow because they sacrifice detail and clarity for time, but your inclusion of every single step of this creation process, from actually creating the finished product to showing your experimentation and mock-ups makes this one of the clearest and most inciteful tutorials I've seen in years. I fortunately have some leftover leather that needs to be used up, I'm looking forward to revisiting this tutorial to make some gloves of my own once I finish my current WIPs. Thank you!!!
Hi Vincent, I'm fairly new to your channel but have loved every episode. I like your pace, the fact that you discuss your mistakes and remedies, and of course the finished products. Your needle work and patterning skills are amazing and I appreciate your dedication to your craft. Bravo, and keep going! I look forward to all of your next projects, and I just have to say that I'm not sure I could see myself making all of those pairs of gloves at 10-12 hours stitching per pair! How wonderful! Also, your button hole tutorials are the best I've seen and have been a game changer for me, thank you! Best wishes :)
I tried sewing gloves during lockdown from a written tutorial, and it felt so impossible and frustrating. I love how completely you break everything down--to look at the finished gloves it seems like inconceivable witchcraft, but when you see all the individual steps, you think "Oh! I could actually handle that!" I think you've inspired me to try again.
Also, I really love when you and other sewing/crafting video makers explain steps where you didn't do it the best way, and what you would have done differently! This is so useful for my shortcut brain that goes "oh but maybe we could just..."
Your video brought me megajoy today! I thought it was amazing! NOW i feel like I need gloves! The dragon was so sweet! I loved your sketches of dragons!
I love your humor LOL! I very much would love to make a pair. Those are gorgeous, even if they are prototypes. I am in awe of the tiny stitch work. Thin masking tape can be found in the drafting section or model painting section of the craft stores. But your method of cutting painter's tape is probably cheaper, and more satisfying. It probably would be a good idea to measure for both hands individually, since most people have one side of their extremities larger/longer than the other ever so slightly. I don't know if you have a Tandy's Leather up in your area, but it was always the place my grandfather went to get his supplies.
I dont think I would ever be sewing leather gloves(although I now really love the idea of striped gloves), but still I find your video very educational and useful, so many tips that can be used on other projects. I really, really, really appreciate your attention to detail (the fact that you decided to make another pair, so that it would show better on camera and not put strain on eyes, wow!). I also love the feeling of pure passion that just radiates from your videos. And I appreciate that you leave in all your mistakes and explain them. We all learn best on the mistakes, even if they are not ours. It also gives others confidence. Its good to know that other also have to "fail" a couple of time before they get their (near) perfect results. Sadly, some creators skip this part. About marking... have you tried used up ballpoint pen? So it leaves pressed in impression. Or maybe typical ballpoint pen? The cheap bic type. It might be even visible on dark colour as it leaves it weird shiny(almost oil slick) residue. Just leave it to dry completely before smudge testing. (I have once destroyed my childhood doll this way, the ballpoint was rubbing of if cleaned it immedietely, but when i left the tattoos over-night... it was permanent). And when it comes to cleaning leather: the magic eraser sponges can work wonders.
Thank you for mirroring your dragon designs. It irks me when symmetrical items (gloves, earrings, sleeves) have designs facing the same way rather than both into or away from centre. Amazing tutorial. I might have another crack at sewn gloves
I have trouble putting into words how much I appreciate this video of yours. I do believe that gloves would be too advanced for me at this stage, but the way you talk about each step is very encouraging, makes me less afraid of mistakes and just overall helps me to understand what steps are needed. I never realised how fashionable gloves are. Love the stripe design and the dragons. They give the gloves a lot of personality. Thank you for sharing your sewing with us.
Beautiful, considered craftsmanship, Vincent. It's therapeutic just to behold your satisfaction in your work. Long may you find fulfillment in your endeavours!
There are tools you can use to create an adhesive stencil so that, rather than having to peel each piece of tape off, you can remove the stencil off all in one piece. We have a Cricut that we use for many applications, including designing templates for carving woodblock designs and 19th century style quilt appliqués. And perhaps using a small brayer instead of a brush, to use the least amount of paint while getting the most even coverage without seepage under the adhesive.
Awesome video. A couple years ago I wanted to make myself some gloves that actually fit an searched RUclips for videos. There wasn’t much out there and what I did find definitely did not cover all the fine detail you went into. Well done and thank you for taking the time to share what you have learned with the rest of us.
Check out the masking tape in the automotive painting section. There are narrow tapes that also are flexible, for ease of constructing complex sharpe shapes when doing fansy paint jobs.
I am never going to make a pair of gloves ( purely because a lack of desire) But i loved learning about how. I love all of your tutorial videos, they're always a joy to watch.
Thank you for filming the close up sewing tutorial with the plain pair. Both gloves are so well done. Thank you for sharing your learnings, so many tips and tricks. You’re absolutely delightful and the editing and different angles and perspectives made the hour go by so quickly.
These are so wonderful!!! I'm completely obsessed with the little dragon design. Your attention to detail is amazing, and your explanations are super clear and helpful. Seeing you make so much cool stuff with such dedication and patience and such an intense work ethic makes me want to make beautiful things too. I always feel like your approach to personal creative projects has a level of professionalism thats very impressive. Man, it's just so so cool :0
For glove conditioning/rehydrating I've used normal Kiwi conditioning oil meant for leather shoes on my hogskin gloves after wearing them for a snowball fight during which they got soaked through. As with any product, you probably want to do a tiny test but they didn't discolour mine, which are a lighter natural brown. I love the way your new striped ones turned out and must now add a green stripey pair to my long list of future makes because they bring delight to my soul.
WOW, Vincent, just wow!!! So happy to see a new video from you. Not happy that i failed to notice it yesterday when you posted. I'm going to have to check my settings. The stripes are perfect! Nd your dragon friends, divine! I love your attention to detail. I especially love that this video is over an hour long. Oh how my heart soared upon seeing that. I also thank your friend for assisting you. Nd thank you for being you, Vincent!! You truly are a breath of fresh air!
The stripes look amazing!!! I am a rather tall lady and with that hight comes long hands and feet. It’s nearly impossible to find gloves that don’t make my fingers feel webbed. I have a gorgeous hot pink coat with a 60’s vibe and elbow length sleeves. I always thought it would look amazing with some longer gloves. You have got my wheels turning and I think I may try to make a pair (not in leather for my first try). Thank you for such detailed advice and information!!
I really appreciate your channel and especially the videos like this covering the smaller articles that often get overlooked or neglected in modern historical garment making. I've seen so few demonstrations on glovemaking from this period, let alone any as clear and thorough. You bring a much needed care and attention to detail to the things you make and how you present them. Also can I just say I absolutely adore the dragon, and have to admire how well you've nailed the style and feel of the period. If you ever find yourself making new stockings in the future, I know I for one would be tremendously interested in seeing the process similarly demonstrated.
I'm delighted to learn that you use a flip phone like a true gentleman! Anyhoo, I've been in an awful rut due to some terrible past experiences with overworking myself in the sewing department, but I think watching your videos may help me reapproach the skill/s again so I no longer have to be haunted by my empty sewing machine desk + mounds of unfinished projects. Thank you kindly for sharing what you do!
This video is charming and mesmerizing. Thank you for sharing your mistakes along with your successes. The final product is STUNNING. As a fellow owner of Angelus leather painting products: I haven't used them yet. Thank you for imparting some courage to go for it ☺
Those stripey gloves are the bee's knees...dunno if bees wear gloves on their knees but hey that's their business. You're so clever and the dedication to detail impresses me no end 👍keep sewing whatever you want😉🥰
I wish I had your level of dedication to 18th century men's fashion but for 19th century clothes. I know, that extra century probably makes you hold your nose, but what can I say, I'm in love. On the subject of putting an image on your gloves (the medalion), there is an excellent video series here on RUclips that details a DIY intalio printmaking technique using repurposed, thick, plastic packaging and a pasta roller. I'm certain that the technique could be adapted to printing on thin leather as easily as it does on heavy paper. I have a pasta roller and a bit of free time. I'll see about getting some suitable leather from the local leatherworks and maybe do some experiments on your behalf. Thank you for your wonderful videos. I really enjoy them.
Hurray! I was so happy to see a new video from you in my feed. This was very interesting, I had never considered how different late 18th century gloves could be in construction from modern gloves. As usual, you have a very soothing voice and way of explaining things, and your instructions/explanations are nice and clear. Also, you should know that I think of you every time I cut open a button hole! I am, unfortunately, one of those people who uses a stitch ripper, and I can feel your despair from that other video each time I do so! Whoops!
Hi there. Right when I saw this video, I had to safe it. Thank you for making such detailed and skilled content. I love the calm musik and your way of teaching. Really awesome!
I really appreciate the extra time and effort you put in to make the plain leather pair. Trying to see all the construction details for the first time on the striped pair would have been difficult.

I once went on a course designing and making a pair of boots - there are silver pens specifically for marking leather.
So exquisite and divine. Those are the finest gloves I've seem to date. You have mastered your niche.
"it's a shame!"
I totally guffawed 😂😂😂
I tried sewing gloves during lockdown from a written tutorial, and it felt so impossible and frustrating. I love how completely you break everything down--to look at the finished gloves it seems like inconceivable witchcraft, but when you see all the individual steps, you think "Oh! I could actually handle that!" I think you've inspired me to try again.
Also, I really love when you and other sewing/crafting video makers explain steps where you didn't do it the best way, and what you would have done differently! This is so useful for my shortcut brain that goes "oh but maybe we could just..."
I'm also inspired this video to make my own gloves! I don't think I'm ready for leather work just yet though.
I love the look of the finished gloves. The dragons are the perfect finishing touch to these.
It gives me such joy and peace watching you making these gloves ❤❤🌈🌈
Amazing gloves. This video is absolutely hypnotic. I couldn't stop watching it. Thank you.
You are so talented, and you make me think I could do this. I can’t, but I think I could! You make it look easy. 👏 BRAVO
These gloves are so inspiring to make my own! Also the part where "I can sew whatever I want" was very much a feeling I can relate to
I dont think I would ever be sewing leather gloves(although I now really love the idea of striped gloves), but still I find your video very educational and useful, so many tips that can be used on other projects.
I always love the music you choose for these videos, very fitting!
Thank you for mirroring your dragon designs. It irks me when symmetrical items (gloves, earrings, sleeves) have designs facing the same way rather than both into or away from centre.
Amazing tutorial. I might have another crack at sewn gloves
the striped gloves are so darling!
Those striped gloves are just fantastic. They're so eye-catching and the dragon friends are terrific additions.
Beautiful, considered craftsmanship, Vincent. It's therapeutic just to behold your satisfaction in your work. Long may you find fulfillment in your endeavours!
Soo beautiful! My brain is willing to receive your sewing knowledge
Anytime I've watched your videos, I'm just in awe by how someone can make such beautiful things.
The stripey gloves are so cute.
so lovely I never considered how involved gloves are. your attention to intricate detail is very calming to watch
Love you Vincent, so glad you're back
I am never going to make a pair of gloves ( purely because a lack of desire) But i loved learning about how.
To me you are the most interesting person on the internet. Another banger of a video!
The striped gloves are exquisite and I adore the art nouveau pairs. Brilliantly done. Thank you for sharing this!
These gloves take my breath away. They look so badass!
the tape laying and painting so satisfying!
Wauw, I make my own clothes, but this is a whole different level. I really admire your skills.
Thank you! I haven't made stockings (not good ones, anyways) but maybe someday!
That dragon is sick! These are amazing. Now I want to make gloves...
This video is charming and mesmerizing. Thank you for sharing your mistakes along with your successes. The final product is STUNNING.
As a fellow owner of Angelus leather painting products: I haven't used them yet. Thank you for imparting some courage to go for it ☺
Какая аккуратность, какое терпение , какой вкус !
Those gloves are absolutely gorgeous! I don't even sew but enjoyed this video through and through!
Those stripey gloves are the bee's knees...dunno if bees wear gloves on their knees but hey that's their business. You're so clever and the dedication to detail impresses me no end 👍keep sewing whatever you want😉🥰
I've always thought I was a detail person. I am put to shame.
You aer so impressive.
The levels of details you go into, is very impressive. Such a fancy boy.
Whoops!
Excellent video. I may have missed this, but you can very fine tape from nail art sources
I love sewing gloves! I used gwen emlyn-jones' book "make your own gloves". Priceless skill.
Now I can finally craft a pair of leather gloves suitable for striding alone across the moors, dwelling on heartache
I love the Poirot DVD set in the bookcase. Kindred spirit.
It is a pleasure, watching you work. Your idea of, 'pretty good' is most peoples 'perfect'.
So happy to see a new video from you. I do so enjoy them. Thank you.
