  • A system developed by the teams of Professors Grégoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch now
    enables patients with a complete spinal cord injury to stand, walk, and even perform recreational activities like swimming, cycling and canoeing.

    What we REALLY need is spinal cord regeneration, but it is very good to have this as a bridging measure to help people who would otherwise have to wait many years (possibly more than their lifetime) for such treatment.

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio 2 года назад +1

      @@methulimkhize The answer is a definite maybe. Some animal experiments with stem cells suggest that if we could lift the inhibition of neurronal growth in mature CNS tissue, we might be able to get it to work, but clearly we have a lot of work to do.

      @methulimkhize 2 года назад

      @@Lucius_Chiaraviglio oh ok that's interesting, oh and another question. How different is spinal cord regeneration to what this guy in the video has gone through?

    • @Lucius_Chiaraviglio
      @Lucius_Chiaraviglio 2 года назад +2

      @@methulimkhize From what I understand from this video and related articles, they have not caused neurons to regrow(*), but instead are using electrical stimulation to get the remaining neurons to respond.
      (*)I wonder if the electrical stimulation might actually cause a small amount of axon development? Not sure if our non-invasive imaging methods would have enough resolution to be able to see small amounts of regrowth. Obviously, that isn't what happens in the short term, since their partially restored movement ability is immediately dependent on the stimulation, but it could contribute to them getting better over time.

      Sadly patents will likely be used to slow this down or reserve it only for people as rich as bezos. Universities always sell them off, despite public funds and tuition paying for it all.

    • @bebbone81
      @bebbone81 3 месяца назад

      @@_PatrickOGrégoire Courtine is co-founder of a startup called Onward, and despite filing several patent applications is still developing the technology for the benefit of patients only. Moreover, as this technology is developed jointly with CHUV as "clinical institution partner", the patients are simple persons approaching the hospital. However, a patients selection is carried out before any intervention, as not all patients are eligible at this stage of the technology; the selection is based on the severity of injury (complete/incomplete SCI), the location of the injury and the "age" of the injury.
      besides, note that the concerned universities have not sold any patents, but only licensed out, to keep control of the intellectual property and avoid patent trolling (for instance).

    This is an amazing development, however, I think R&D should also be aimed at quadriplegics like me which struggle with independence every day. It is a lot more useful to be able to use our arms than to stand up. This would enable me to do basic things like scratching, dressing, moving my body on the bed, and even just being able to roll a wheelchair. After being in a high-level athlete all my life these last two years after my accident have been such a huge lesson, and one of the things I find regarding SCIs is that most of the development is focused on walking. I think for us quadriplegics arm' s movements should be prioritized. Thanks for what you're doing and please take this into account, I will be more than happy to help too!

    • @PatricioEscobarDH
      @PatricioEscobarDH 2 года назад +5

      @MaGayle Starks They have done an amazing job for sure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about me as a person but at me I as a community. Losing independency because of a high SCI is one of the most difficult things a human can endure while being conscious. So your comparison is not fair. The difference between losing the ability to walk and losing the ability to do anything because you don’t have either leg or arm mobility is night and day. Nonetheless, the solution is very similar and if research is done also to help higher SCI’s then they might kill two birds with one stone. Also take into consideration we’re talking about the same injury, the “only difference” is the level, so if it works for walking it can also work for moving our hands/arms, and vice versa. Medically very similar, not like your comparison between testicles and breasts. In conclusion, I’m just making a recommendation from the vision one that not only can’t walk but neither move my arms and hands. 🙏

    Does this restore partially or otherwise, bowel, bladder function etc? It seems like it would only work for those with T level injuries. It's great that we're starting to see real world progress and I don't mean to make light of this achievement I can imagine it has amazing positive outcomes on blood pressure, skeletal mass, skin care along with much more, but for me not walking isn't my major concern. It's resorting function to bowel, bladder, sexual function and fingers.

    My father was recommended a surgery to repair something (i don't recall exactly what) in his back between his shoulder blades, over 20 years ago. Nothing came of it until 4 or 5 years later he had noticed losing feeling on the bottom half of his body. Then he had a bad fall and became complete paralyzed from the chest down. In the hospital, the doctors found that the old surgery had knicked the case around the cord and allowed slow spinal fluid build up causing the loss of feeling over time. But sadly the fall had caused it to rupture and permanently damage the cord.
    The doctors determined that the first surgery was not even needed and that it was the cause of the issue. We attempted to find the surgeon and possibly sue but their practice had closed their doors and he had fled the country shortly after my dad's surgery. So there was no way to be compensated
    He has been paralyzed for 15-16 years now, but has gained some mobility over time. And can get around with assistance from a walker.
    Regeneration of the cord would be amazing but this new procedure does sound promising indeed. Thank you for your amazing work

    I will add that if a special supporting exoskeleton was added to this implant, I believe that almost full functionality could be achieved.
    PL: To naprawdę przełomowy i wspaniały wynalazek tych wybitnych naukowców.
