Chasing 200 MPH at the First Ever Ohio Mile! - HOT ROD Unlimited Episode 8

- On this episode of HOT ROD Unlimited, HOT ROD Editor In Chief David Freiburger explores the very first standing-mile race to be held on the runway at the Airpark in Wilmington, Ohio. This race was sanctioned by the East Coast Timing Association, which for years had been running on an old WWII runway at the airport in Maxton, North Carolina. When military needs caused the ECTA to lose access to Maxton at the end of the 2011 season, the city of Wilmington was happy to accept the racers. The very first meet was filled to capacity with 175 entries, and despite rain delays, 24 vehicles eclipsed 200 mph at the event. Watch as Freiburger makes his first passes at Wilmington, hunting for 200 mph in Wayne Jesel's former Busch-series NASCAR race car.

I just can't get enough of shows like this.
To those of you posting the belief that it should be easier for these cars to run 200 mph, you need to understand more about what's going on. The class rules at this event (and at Bonneville) are based on displacement, aspiration, and fuel. Many folks run small engines, naturally aspirated, on gasoline, making it far more difficult to run fast than with a turbocharged supercar. The car Freiburger drove in the video has 300ci, NA on gas, and it has run 210 mph. Try that yourself sometime.
Thanks. We have great tripods, plus some of the best camera operators in the business!
I have lived in Wilmington for 9 years and this is the coolest event that has been here in forever,
Holy Cow, that Car at 3:47 sounds incredible !!!!
3:47
It's because it's an old nascar engine
it's no 347. it's 351 Cleveland based engine. Ernie Elliott. Dawsonville, GA
That Nascar motor sounds amazing
Indeed. Sounds like a few of those cars are running old Nascar engines
And a 2.0 liter Mitsubishi cleans up. I don't know how that works, but I'm impressed nonetheless.
Small high winding engine with a turbo, I guess?
35 pounds of boost through an 80mm turbo will do it, those little 2L motors can go well over 1000hp
There are a multitude of classes at these events he won his class.
For all that think they can run 200, Show up and bring your ride. If you get past the 200 mph wall we will all give you props. Anyone can run 200 at home. When you get your time slip its a whole new ball game for 99% of people.
That's because it's about the experience of researching, buying, building, testing, modifying, and racing these homemade machines. If it's insanely fast, then that's awesome.
Welcome to youtube where everyone is an expert weapons analyst and a connoisseur of cars who is never wrong.
Mike **Reichen's** car is the only one that really demands my attention and respect... that little 4cyl. 4door is INSANE.
Congrats Mike!!!
Nice coverage of this great looking event! It looks like there is a lot of fun to be had here. I saw a lot of unique cars at this event.
hope to see the ECTA come back to wilmington for many years to come, our town needs events like this to bring the moral back up in this town. thanks ECTA
How Cool...Larry told me he got my channel on Hot Rod TV...he was not kidding...thanks guys..not trying to high jack your video but I do have three videos of the Mazda RX-7 on my channel..Thanks again!!!
Thanks for watching!
That evo 2 is nutty
Arent the brakes gonna get really hot if the spokes cover the whole brake? it does make it go a little faster because it reduces air drag but still..
Curious what happened with Moultrie GA, It's not even mentioned in the ECTA history on their site. A ragtag SCCA chapter still runs autocross there.
I was there and pushed my 250cc motorcycle to 123 mph. Great track and the best people on earth.
Nice engine sounds, the end is great.
Another great video, thx David
WOW! Thank You so much for this video! I really feel the need for speed!
Damn, you gotta have some balls to go that fast on a motorcycle!
Nice job MIKE ! Out of curiosity, why did you dial back the boost? Im waiting for that this to run 250 !
Great video. What an impressive evo.
I have to check that out! That Nash was awesome! but hold cow! 4G63 POWWAAAA!!!!!
That Mitsubishi. So much respect.
nice fusion with edge rims at 4:58
I like the yellow one with the Nascar engine. Sounds so nice.
i kinda like watching the old cars run.
yeah, i was also surprised none of these full blown race cars couldn't top numbers of full weight street cars here at the Texas Mile a few years back...
Great video thank you
Some of the racers from Drag Week should participate in this.
That sound @ 3:40! WOW! :-O
1:26 The golf cart accepts the challenge!
that place was awesome, I was there. there were a lot of really awesome cars running there
I am still pissed I mi.ssed this event, Thanks alot Wayne
How did I not know about this? I live in Ohio!!! This kid will be there next year
my sentiments exactly. my jaw is still on the floor!!
Good video. Thanks
What is the 9k rpm 300 ci motor he is talking about ?
Anyone ?
At 2:26, thats some awesome camara work.
The wheel from Camaro of which manufacturer are the accurate designation Please
NASCAR keeps the sheet metal high on the rear lower quarter panels to keep the cars under 200mph.lol
Yet almost every super speedway the cars break 200
Good video.
You forgot to mention it was '94!! haha, thats nuts!
Love how Kris Henderson had a mango
You should take the corvette race car there
LOL drag racing a Lloyd? Awesome.
that evo just screams down the track!
I want to go there. Big time.👍🇺🇸
You should check out the ugr lambos and tt ford GT's which do 250+ and are full weight, stock looking street cars that can be daily driven.
what insanely fast car that goes over 200mph do you drive? Just curious...
At 1.32, what car is that?
It is a Chevrolet Corvair (with a Corvette LT1 engine, mounted "mid-engine)...
yeah lol, the Texas mile is probably one of the most competitive ones though
By how extensively modified these cars look, I would expect 200 mph traps in the quarter let alone a full mile lol.
What was the new track record?
I saw an RX7! That's my ride right there. I hate how they ruined it for the Flats!
They don't really use the brakes after the speed runs. It's what the chutes are for. If they ever drive the cars (aside from taxi'ing too & from pits at events) they'd just change the wheels.
Yes, but the intersections weren't controlled with lights.
Re 7:45
237 mph in a street legal car within 1 mile?!
Holy crap
hey guys, take a look at my videos of our saturn!! we went 206 at the fall meet, and will be there this year in april to run the top speed challenge. we plan on DRIVING three cars (one being Kris Henderson's Jag) to the event and hopefully come home with a jacket! see y'all in April!
237 MILES PER HOUR ?!!!! In a Mitsubishi EVO 2 ?!!! WOW !
Someone went over 200 mph with a 2 liter engine. That is insane
+Peanutbuterjelly my friend had a opel calibra 4x4 turbo that went 187 mph. and it was just slightly tuned everyday car. you dont need american style "all the liters you can get" engines to go fast
the 80mm turbo is the replacement for displacement. 80mm is huge for a 4 banger.
+yepyep yepyep did it have a super long gear ratio? I know they need a lot hp to run through long gears
Makes me want to blow 40 psi though my 1.8 and see what happens.
I love that corvair
dude sounds just like jello biafra
luis vermillion That's exactly what I thought, he does sound like Jello Biafra.
You all would be suprised at how hard it is the get to 200 mph let alone over 200 in a full bodied car.
what do you drive?
The Jesel car now resides at Dale Earnhardt Jr property
very cool
LMFAO at the STUPID CARS LOL
oh and guys.... because this was the first meet, everyone was limited severely to the number of runs as well speeds ....
I have done 208 mph at home on the Autobahn a couple times... does that count for anything?
So cool :D
isn't a 572ci a Pontiac Big Chief?
my non twin T non-z06 ran 180 even at the Texas mile, stock, so yeah, your description would easily hit 200
Nice work David.... I'm amazed at the keyboard experts on here.... I can honestly tell they've never actually done 200mph with anything let along a 4 cylinder... Mike's little Evo... just annihilated a ton of exceptionally well modified super cars.... so... that having been said... keep in mind these people have met a series of very stiff safety regulations as well... of course the cars have been modified... that's the point of testing them...
Talk is cheep!!!! Bring it to Wilmington!!!!
Every car should have moon discs
Dude, go to the Texas Mile, cars break into the 200's like nothing.
Texas has been doing this TWICE a year for the past couple years now...
****Drive from Tennessee i should add****
GO MIKE!!
Over 200 mph in a 2.0L? Wow. I wonder how many rpm's.
I live in Wilmington, Ohio. :)
Nice!
wow, what an echo does it make in that place
imagine an old F1 V10 in there or a LFA
4:58 Ford Fusion :DDD
How fast would a Veyron be on a mile like this? :)
Congrats. Want a cake?
In oem cars? ... or purpose built standing mile cars?
When you look at purpose built standing mile cars, 200mph is a mid-range goal... by no means a top tier result.
On the other hand, it is insane for OEM cars to get near 155mph in the standing mile. Very very fast. Some of these look modified in regards to chassis and aero.
guy looks and sounds like richard christy lol
I
Avoid airshifter like the purge palisade just clutch kick and bamp!
ya I have. What do you want kid?
I was hoping for that Mazda to have a wankel rotary.
that makes two of us
The og Veyron 16.4 hits around 205mph at the mile trap... not sure how or why that would be "trolling"
Ford GT did 212mph 1/2 Mile and 257mph in 1 mile. :)
Power adder?
