I would definitely say it was detonation, and it probably occurred when you were getting your tune dialed in, or if you had a boost leak at a certain point and it ran way rich. Before removing the valves you could spray some wd40 in the cylinder 3 intake port to pin point where the valve is leaking, before removing the valves to inspect the valve and valve seat.
If it ran way rich because of a boost leak, why would that cause detonation? I thought it was only when you run lean you get detonation.
Detonation is caused by heat or pressure or a mixture of the both. Carbon deposits from running to rich can also cause detonation.
I agree 100% with everything micheal said ive seen thins happen on a few different cars built and stock and ussually when its a car that is well maintained and everything like your evo it turns out being detenation in my experiances
@@hcrib1 okay so can you explain further? Carbon deposits from extra fuel doesn't add heat, if anything it would run cooler from the extra fuel, and I can't see it increasing pressure without adding more air, so if it doesn't do any other the two things that are needed for detonation (heat, pressure) why would it cause it. Just confused here.
When carbon deposits get hot enough they can cause fuel to detonate prematurely, they also act as hot spots wherever they burn will get abnormally hot weakening the areas hence the pitting.
Spark cut moves the ignition "event" with negative timing to shoot flames. It is essentially controlled detonation to cause the combustion event to happen later aka as it is exiting into the exhaust which is the reason you get flames. All this was disclosed before proceeding with the hotboi stuff. If you notice the pitting isnt in the center of the piston but the front and rear of the pistons right above the valves. Either way it sucks to see. I'll shoot you a call and lets talk about it
Apex Powered LLC this ^^. Also, if it happened during regular driving (doing pulls), it would have likely been showing knock while the detonation was occurring. It’s always good to monitor knock, this is also why it isn’t the best idea to push a car on pump gas. Methanol and/or E85 is always better for performance since it burns so much cooler and prevents detonation.
You did beat the crap out of it i. The snow when it overheated...maybe a bent valve i would check all valves on the head.. the block is well built to break anything..hope it works out devin you the man
Bro these daily upload's are the freaking best! Love the content keep up the dope work 😎 clean cars btw
I think its a bad injector on #3 cylinder. Explains why its the cleanest piston as well, because it was running lean and to bring the afr back to a desired level all the other cylinders were running a bit richer than normal which explains why they are “dirty”🤷🏼♀️ just my 2 cents..
This comment!
One of my injectors were bad aswell and replaced with IDs and boom made the car new again..
Was experiencing the same pops and backfires at idles with the bad injector.. Even sometimes the car would shut off at idle cause of the bad injector.. But all gone now 😎😎
Pre ignition will do that and probably has done it, also known as pinking
dang bro, but I can’t wait to watch the rebuild!
That pitting is a little above my pay grade, originally I was thinking it may have something to do with when you had some overheating the other day in the "snow bunny" video... but based on what you found - I doubt that had anything to do with it. You'll get it figured man, I hate that feeling when your car is broken, but you can't figure it out - but once you figure out what happened, it is such a relief, almost satisfying. 👊 keep yo head up bruh
Don't feel bad bro... just melted a valve in my 9
Even though your hot side has no physical damage, look how white the blades are. It's been very hot and on a turbo, pretty consistent with running lean. Either way you look at it, the damage is done.
clean pistons like that in my experience usually mean its burning oil. the pitting could be caused by that carbon breaking up, this would also likely cause damage to the valve seats causing it to leak out the intake side.
You can do it.. you can do it all night long....lol...keep up the good work man. Cant wait to see what upgrades you do to it once rebuilt
Definetly the hotboi tune for cracks and flames this is what happens🧐
I'm just tryna see who was hammering the STI loool
Here’s what it seems like to me. It looks like detonation for sure knowing that it only happened in one cylinder, as if something got into the motor it would probably hurt more than just one thing. Few things it could be; possibly the injector is going bad, causing it to go lean in the one cylinder. Maybe something got through your fuel lines and plugged the injector. I’m not sure if you are on e85 or pump, but e85 can plug injectors and the trash pump gas we have out here isn’t the highest of quality. It would be smart to flow test your injectors. Another thing is it could be simply a plug getting a little hot and not fulfilling its duty, or possibly even a plug cap coming loose or something like that. To me these are the things that come to mind knowing it only happened to one cylinder. But maybe for some reason that cylinder runs a little hotter so when the time came for your crazy timing to finally cause some issues, that was the first cylinder to go. Idk man, just a couple of thoughts. I would definitely test your valves by putting some gas or something in the head to see if they leak, and I would definitely flow test your injectors. And it would be smart to get new plugs obviously. I’m sure something down the road will show you what’s going on. Let’s just hope it’s a one time deal! Keep on working man, you’ll get it figured out.
Shame to see man. but yeah i reckon for sure pre ignition. if you google "mild detonation around piston and head" you will find images of exactly the same damage as on your engine. the only thing i dont understand is why only the one cylinder.
Possibly too much hot boy two stepping
That causes burnt exhaust valves, not detonation. It's explained in the video.
You are a big help to all the evo x owners. Keep it up
Dont you live in/near washington? I would 100% go get tuned by English Racing after all of this. Aaron over there is an OG Evo tuner that has probably tuned thousands of evos at this point. Bulletproof tune
Spark plug gap still check out across the board? Also, make sure all your arp studs are still seated all the way into the block
Do you datalog at all? That would be a good way to really see what's going on if you think you have excessive detonation. You should be able to capture AF as well as knock counts. You can monitor the AF but not sure how well you can see it while driving hard to really tell if you're going lean in spots.
My car has just failed in a very similar fashion! Compression test read 60 for all 4 cylinders! Suggests the valves aren't closing properly i figure. Will remove head today. Not looking forward to removing the turbo.. bound to be ceased on due to heat wash. I suspect the car may have been running lean. Updated relays installed but this type of failure normally relates to fuelling issues. Pi$$ed off.
how clean of carbon on number three cylinder i would say you ate a head gasket and use rubbing alcohol on the runners leading to number 3 and see if you have leakage on the valves or seats. and my thoughts are same detonation occurred and took out head gasket and maybe a valve.
It could be a weak or dirty injector leaning fuel in that cylinder. An AFR meter wouldnt show up a fault if it was tuned like that as its an average of all cylinders.
Its definitely a detonation, just had the same on cylinder 3, mine was due to too much timing, however it could be that or bad tune or faulty injectors (includes injectors being too big for your application)
I would pour some water into the #3 intake port and see if any water leaks around the valves to verify the intake valves are/aren’t leaking
Maybe when you had issues with the injector coming unplugged, wasn't it cylinder 3? That screwed up your afrs for sure.
A fuel injector especially if it is loose could cause all those problems.
One Injector is need to be flow tested!!
that hot boy tune
boi* 😂😂😂😂
Our Evo X have a bad fuel pump housing design . That’s why most evos run surge tanks. If you Arent running a surge tank most likely all the spinning around in the snow caused you to starve the pump and lean out the motor since your gas was all over the tank instead of in the pump cage . That’s why if you autocross an X you must run 3/4 of a tank and up Or have a surge tank . Same issue with our oil pans .
Bad tune brotha
I’m here since 16k sub .. the channel growing fast
Specially requested hotboi tune Warned of damages, 2 steps every and does it for the gram Overheats car , but still shocked it blew lol
Bad coil or plug on 3? Timing would of left some kind of signe on all the cylinders, I feel.
At least you still have a core
The amount of pulls you do daily explains all of this lmao
This probably cause the spark cut patch, due to the timing being really high. My evo x spit fire like Ak47 and last week my cylinder 3 spark plug almost drop through the piston. The centre of the electrode broke in half and it's just sitting to where the 90 degrees bent is.
You are suposed to a leakdown test starting from the first cylinder then third after that 2 and then fourt it will mess up the readings if you only do one
your cars break down every other week lol
When you beat on your car all winter and it's had enough lol
I remember from an older video that you had a coil pack unplug on a cylinder a couple times when you were like ( racing) someone. No excuse me not racing. Maybe that may help but it seemed like along time ago.
First I would have to check the coil to see if it was actually working 100% and then check for the injector if it was also working 100%.
Detonation could've also been cause by that injector issue you had. Your Injectors not being all the way plugged in and leaning out. Maybe that cylinder caught it the worst and is now revealing itself.
Wow! Crazy!
I still think it had to do with the overheating in the snow the other day. Cooked a valve seat in #3 or warped an entire valve from the overheating?
To be honest this dynamo simulator stuff I reckon is pretty bad seems to be causing nothing but problems. Even tuning a car over the phone is pretty risky since the tuner isn’t actually their to see what’s going on.
Wow, sorry about what happened to your engine.
Did you clean the piston ? If not I would check your injector because it shouldn't be that clean, just like the others.
Yeah I did clean it.
One of your pistons looks higher than the other. Have you stretched a rod?
Just checked everything, definitely not the case. I think it looks like that because one is clean.
@@Dvniemela it a tricky one. Keep us updated
Devin Niemela I definitely think this is a great possibility. Piston could be hitting the head. But you’d also hear this
You definitely need a #chagtuned 🔥🧨
I second this.
You need to get #chagtuned
^ hes right you know
Check the rings you might have blown a ring need to check that nice video as allways
Down side of 2 step tune
Could’ve had a rock go though the intake?🤔
Wish I had your mechanical skills, I can barely use a screwdriver
Sounds like a case of tuners fault.
Always the tuners fault
Because 20+ pounds of boost in a 2.0L engine isnt gonna cause problems or anything right??
i like evo ...nice video
from malaysia
Possibly the tune is too aggressive for the fuel your running or bad gas? Does the tune disable any of the factory sensors? Maybe you didn't get a warning
What about the valve guides?
Boi I love this car
Bumper!! Bro sell the subie put all the money in the evo
Idk about evos but 30+psi👀could have something to do with it
It's a fully built bottom end, should be able to handle a good bit more.
Devin Niemela that’s awesome man you have a badass evo x🤘🤘🤘
Bro how did you know when your evo blew
How is the cylinder wall?
Flow test injectors then verify the tune. This should be on tephra with knock cel flashing setup properly
That sucks brah. Are you on e85? If not maybe it's time to think about it?
Braybeurn we don’t have e85 locally
Looks to me like you may have been running lean, the pitting has my baffled though.
Devin i aclually bought a lancer Awc but im on rims 16" What can i put for mags?
Are you running E85? If so, I've heard about injectors in one cylinder getting gunked up an burning up one cylinder.
It was the anti lag
Just 1 ad on this video come on bro put some more I don’t mind it if it means helping you out!!
Have you checked the giggling pin on the laughing sprocket 😂
Shit tune from English, then Apex turned it up. Knock got you.
Is it possible that whatever caused the marks is now down in the oil or oil filter somewhere?
No
@@bigdisme5622nothing can get past not even compressed air that's the point of a piston.
Devin I have bmw one series in Germany do you know witch oil engine should I used is’t 5-30 or 5-40
Tnx
Check the oil cap, sometimes it's printed on there from factory.
J.V. Tnx bro
You want some new NGK spark plugs for free, so you have some new ones for the rebuild
Kinda have the same problem as you, had bad leakdown in cylinder 3 but my compression was between 140-150 on all cylinders. Don’t know what I should do yet, any help?
What % leakdown was it and where was it going? Those compression numbers seem fine.
Devin Niemela I was told I have c1 has 5% c2 has 15% c3 has 25% and c4 has 5% said the 25% was coming from the bottom end
Devin Niemela motor only has 45k miles on it for a 2010
anyone here owns an X that doesnt break ? I have one and it has yet to break down on me, but goddamn Im getting worried
Just keep it around 400hp and dont beat on it excessively and you will be fine 😊
Hey RUclips-Man. ( hahaha ), you drove it to hard that day you went into the snow, it overheated, which could have caused the initial issue, but then again, it most likely was the explosion you were talking about, lean? Maybe
Overheating would cause cracked block or head, head gasket issues, and not this issue we have here.
lol seems like bobbis stock motorsti and ur evo now with stock motor have held up for longest
Damn.. RIP
Your knee good bro?
No lol
Sell the evo and buy a type r.
You can mod and beat on it still and have more fun. Plus more reliable and content.
Saaah dude
Rip
ahhhh sheeee
GG
Ef ur tuner it’s his fault
What do you expect
LMAOOOOOO
try install a water meth kit? Not sure if you already are running on one
💔💔💔💔💔💔
Oofffffff
Bruh you overheated an all aluminum engine..its cooked. Time to do a full rebuild..dont take short cuts or itll cost you again. Sell it for another subaru lol
