I got into knives earlier this year and just got my first case for my collection earlier today. I grabbed one of those Harbor Freight apache cases on sale for $20 and then bought a few of the foam kneeling pads that were on sale for $4. I tossed the pull apart foam and ended up using an epoxy around the very edge of the kneeling pads to stack them up to the correct thickness and then trimmed it to fit in the case. Then I traced out my knives and cut the pads with a long thin utility knife to the exact size and shape of my knives. Everything included I'm into the case for just shy of $40 and about an hour and a half of my time to make it. I'm actually super happy with how it turned out, I can actually hold the case upside down and the foam retains my knives perfectly as well as keeping them from rattling around.
The slot on the side of the case is for a locking cable similar to a bicycle cable but it has a round bolt head type of fitting that slides down into the slot when the case is open and when you close and lock the case it can't easily be removed.
So being a slipjoints collector, and with about 300 of them, I’ve run into issues. I looked at stuff like this, and if it’s affordable, I’m all for it. I recommend thinking outside of the box. I’m currently using 2, 4 drawer tool chests stacked on each other, and a vintage jewelry “box” that’s basically a small pc of furniture at around 3 ft tall. I had to line the tool box drawers with felt, but the jewelry case has like 10 drawers that are felt lined. But the more knives I buy, the more stuff I’ll need to store them. But def a cool video. Wish more knife guys did these.
Appreciate the honesty as usual. When i saw the case, I also could tell it wasn't really high quality but if it was a decent price like you said, then that would be totally fine. On the other hand, I have been looking for some storage cases for my knives lately and the Cavol one you recommended at the beginning is perfect, I'm going to look into that.
Thank you! I am so happy to be subscribed to your content - especially with that cut in to discuss the nature of the build and price. Now, self serving... any suggestions on foam, only, that is around 12" x 6" x 2-4" with 6-8 slots? I have something they'll be placed in, but it's likely I'll stack them. Haven't been able to find something reasonable. $45-50 per insert is not hitting my "value" button. Again, thanks! Damn nice collection as well!
I would recommend the Amazon "Casematix 40" case over the Cavol offering. It's $54 and holds 40 knives, versus 24 knives for $60 for the Cavol. Quality is fine, but I haven't handled the Cavol so I can't compare the feels.
The casematix doesn’t have as good of foam, and it doesn’t have the rigid foam on the top and bottom The Cavol is just better quality over all But if your collection is mostly work knives or knives 200$ and less The Casematix will probably be fine But if you want extra cushion and protection, the Cavol is better for sure
@@bornonthebattlefront4883 Definitely a consideration if you're toting your collection around. But if you're like me and the cases are just living in a closet, the foam/construction is more than adequate.
Regarding the Harbor Freight case, MC also has something similar for knives not going into his permanent collection. Only two dealbreakers for me are that it doesn’t “display” and it’s kinda big. I ended up getting one of those Holmes & Hatfield displays at launch price as well as making a couple of my own out of generic acrylic display boxes and knife holders. So far, so good.
Have seen a lot of cases similar to the clear top one and really need it! Would like to see hinges on it like some other brands have done for easier access to what I would assume would be anyone's top 8 knives they would grab
Lol the bots are out It appears 😂😂 I made myself a nice live edge wooden wall-hanging display, which probably cost about $25-30 all in. I've been looking for a solid case for my less expensive knives. I'll have to grab one of those looks solid.
I know for me personally I need a case with decent depth. I think I got a Casematix or something from Amazon and I can't even close it due to a lot of my knives being like 5 inches or more even closed, so may need something hyper specific for my needs.
@@NeevesKnivesanother guy said it’s for a cable lock type thing that you put on when it’s open then you close it and lock the box too and somebody can’t haul off with your box or open it. Either answer sounds plausible though lol
The laser etching/coloring on the ocaso is amazing, I wish more knives did something like this
I bought a Cavol case after your first video about it and I love it! ❤

I like this content. I've been looking for a nice way to keep my EDC's organized for a long time. I don't like this one, but would love to see more.
I"m going to start with a Ikea Elloven! Very affordable and popular. I can find a lot the (Dutch) marketplace as well.
I'm snag'n 2 of those cases right now.
Appreciate bro!

My wife got me the H&H Armada and I filled it immediately. 😂 I need something even bigger!
I really like that display case, I just wish it was cheaper. They drop the price, I’d buy it

Yes the Cavol has been my #1 recommendation since I first got my first one 😆
I have one. It is excellent.
Fun video
Have ordered 2 Cavol cases. Great value!
👊 🙏
Wicked collection

Can the Cavol fit bigger knives like full size crooked river ect
For sure, I pulled the fatty slash out of it

Need one of these box, cheers
Man, I've been asking you about that Raven lock knife for like 3 years now. I think no it's only been about a year but yeah I wish I could get one
Good price for the Case.

Been watching that raven lock knife website for the last year in hopes to buy one. He's selling pens...
The ressentit ? Like in French le ressentit ..? Grrreat ,, it's a plaisir. Voilà !! ^^ As you can imagine, i am French ..! ^^
Man, that sure looks like a Holme and Hadfield
Yeah there's a lot of companies doing similar displays
Cavol is a nice case but 24 spots isn't enough. Hopefully they will come out with a 40+ slot one.
They could but it would be more money you could just get 2

I'm guessing the side slot on the outside of the case is probably for a removable shoulder strap.
Oh man you are probably righ5

My cavol cases weatherstripping/seal keeps popping out of the groove. Anyone else have that issue?
Hodgepodge
It’s the “Padre” not “Compadre” 😅 nice content 👌🏼👌🏼
They do make a compadre
I was referring to the smaller one
Cavol knife cases are very nice for the price.
