One more comment: There are a million other RUclips videos covering the subjects you are covering Julie, but trust me, the quality, the delivery, etc of your videos set them apart in my opinion.
I have to agree, but I think it's kind of understandable. 10 years ago, buying a webcam was a nightmare, mostly because of drivers. Nowadays almost all webcams uses UVC, so they are basically plug and play. Now, I see how a manufacturer could improve a webcam, but there are some drawbacks: - better optics would be the obvious way, but it would mean bulkier and heavier webcams, which goes pretty much against the tendency in the electronics market - faster data-rate to avoid lossy compression protocols, but that would imply to drop compatibility with older computers AND to develop dedicated software, as UVC would be a limiting factor otherwise, I'm not sure it would be acclaimed by the users, and it would be very expensive anyway It's seems like we've reached some kind of a compromise between practicality and price, and as long as the software standard does not evolve, it will probably stay the same.
My experience: even Surface Pro 7 integrated front camera looks better then Brio, Streamcam, C930e. We have all of them in office and I was really shocked about the bad out-of-the-box video quality of logitech. But if you're using using Zoom Conference Calls this does not matter, even a webcam from the 90ties with 640x320 will max out Zoom....

This has got to be THE best video on RUclips that covers "cameras" in general for different purposes, mainly vlogging. I have watched countless videos and this is my favourite, and by far. The way you present, how practical the material is, your personality, wit, and things you cover, all are of top quality, and I have no idea how any of that could get better. Good work on the video. You seem to have put a lot of thought into the quality of your content both from a substance pov as well as the presentation. It's very common to see newer channels take some time to get to a certain level of quality, but your videos appear to have skipped a few levels right from the very first one are already pretty good. Edit : I got the the DSLR section of your video, it's worth mentioning even old cameras that are not listed work. I use a T2i /550d as a webcam with the Canon Webcam Utility Tool
Hey Zulf Photography! That's great to know regarding other models and the Webcam Utility Tool. That opens up a lot more possibilities. Thank you, I will add this info to the description! Thanks for the nice comment.
The mirrorless camera option produces amazing results. I would love to see more on camera placement, stands, setup, etc. Also, I already have a Nikon, so seeing other cameras would be nice too.
Just saved me money. I have a m50 and I was looking at the papalook as a budget webcam . You helped me avoid wasted money and time and realize I had what I needed already
Awesome video! I do want to make a clarification though. The lens is only half of the bokeh equation. The sensor size plays a MAJOR role in this factor. The larger the sensor, the more background blur (or, the tighter the focal plane can be... i.e., the steeper the angle of light). So, the biggest problem that smaller cameras have is their sensor size is super small. The "effective" f-stop is higher based on the crop factor of the sensor. This can be referred to as "f-stop equivalence". Webcams and cell phones have super tiny sensors. So even though the iPhone has an f-stop of 1.4, the equivalence is something like f/11 or higher from an ability to blur the background. The Canon M50 has an APS-C cropped sensor, so it is a 1.6x crop of a full-frame sensor like the Canon EOS-R. So, using the *same exact* f-stop on the M50 and EOS-R will result in more blur on the EOS-R because the sensor is larger, and therefore the angle of light is steeper. You can use the crop factor to find the f-stop equivalence. An f/1.4 lens on the M50 will look similar to an f/2.2 lens on the EOS-R. Another way to look at this is, in order to get the same blur capability on the smaller sensor, you would need an even larger f-stop (lower number). The M50 would need an f/0.90 lens to have the same blur as the EOS-R with an f/1.4. Unfortunately, I don't think that lens exists, and if it does it will be expensive or manual only.
@Tim Federwitz this is so helpful, thank you for taking the time to write this all out! This explanation makes sense, though I always thought that sensor played only a secondary role, and that if you change lenses but keep distance the same, the FOV will change but the bokeh will be the same. I'm thinking of this video by Gerard Undone: ruclips.net/video/1bzHn2cKwLI/видео.html&ab_channel=GeraldUndone I'm trying to rectify these two explanations in my head...
I’ve been using a Logitech Streamcam with Logi Capture’s blurred background feature, and have been very pleased with the effect. It’s a nice change of pace from using my green screen virtual backgrounds. EDIT: Silly of me to forget that it’s actually NVIDIA Broadcast, not Logi Capture, that brings the background blur into the other apps I use.
Julie, I've said this before, but I have to say it again. Bravo! My only complaint is that I want to see MORE of your videos because you do such a great job. (Oh, and your silent takes...to make a point, are priceless. Again, YOU ARE FANTASTIC!!!!!
Interesting that a cheap HD capture card doesn’t look good. With the Canon software, you don’t get full resolution but they still look better than a HD webcam? Why? Also, how are you using those color cards to calibrate color? Sorry for the many questions. Your content is SO GOOD!
Thank you so much Duy 😊. And I love questions. So, that's right - there is always some degradation in quality when you put these cameras through a "webcam" mode or use a capture card (it's why the iPhone looks so much worse as a webcam than it does when shooting video). I'm not entirely sure why so much quality is lost. I saw on another comment that the El Gato Camlink looks similar to the webcam software so I really think that the cheap capture card was just poor quality. Now, in terms of the color card. That's from X-rite and each color box corresponds to RBGCY. I can then open up Adobe Premiere Pro's lumetri color scopes which maps out RBGCY to see how accurate the colors are and make adjustments as needed.
Wow... Great job with this video. You paced it really well and you gave EXACTLY what I was looking for (demonstrations). Absolutely top quality content!
The best comparison, respectfully for your effort , i have try some camcorder for webcam, but audio not good because my wrongly set up. thank for your video.
It would be amazing to see a background styling and lighting from you. Also how you talk n present so neatly despite being new to youtube. You are helping many people with your content. Thanks
Hands down the best objective and debloated camera video. You covered everything one would want from a video of this category in a concise way. No unneeded comments or information. Thank you for all the information and for not making a bloated long video. I already subscribed; I am an instant fan. I will follow by watching some of the other videos you mentioned. Thank you.
Wanted to gift myself a new webcam, realized I already have an A7iii which I can use, watched the full video for your personality and quirky nature, subbed for more. Good luck with your channel.
It does though OBS, and I see it as an option in Zoom under the mics, but I couldn't get it to work testing it just now by selecting the camlink "mic" in Zoom. I bet you could get it with a little troubleshooting though. And certainly through OBS.
Oh man, finally an honest review on this topic. I'm here hating my Brio and now I can't returned it because I threw the box out. I'm working on hooking up my Canon 80D, so I guess I'll need a better lens. Thank you!
gets right to the important parts and covers everything you'd want. Super detailed description with all the links too, much appreciated and very helpful!
Julie I like the way you explain things. As a photographer and techy for 40 years. I wanted to get my family a really nice web cam without high dollar. Your explaination of Lense blurr was really great.
Hey Julie, first of all I must say that You deserve Millions of subscribers. Besides all the information that you provide, I really like the presentation and obviously your screen presence. I wonder why you stopped making videos. Expecting more regular content. Cheers 👍😊
Hi Julie, I have watched all your vids now. They are great, comprehensive and the right length for my short attention span. My only problem is that I would like to have more. I have no idea how much work is involved in these but i imagine they take a bit to make. Looking forward to the next one. Maybe places to see in Ireland. Cheers
I don't think I have ever subscribed to a youtube channel before. Definitely didn't leave a comment before. But, this video deserves all the praise. Keep up the good work.
So glad I got a Sony a6400 before the pandemic for holiday photography. Although I couldn't go on holiday in the end, it is now the best webcam I ever owned, and I use it for all my daily work meetings.
Lovely concise presentation. We have just moved our business to home - permanently and am currently investing in Tech to interface with our clients “virtually” instead of 30yrs face to face ! So your tips on lighting, mics and now webcams are really useful. Come from UK, we also like how crisply you speak without so many of the RUclips “Americanisms”. It makes your presentations “soooper-soooper” professional. Ha ha. Looking fwd to next one. Lord Rowley. X
Absolutely the best! Straight to the point, with immensely helpful video examples, well edited, articulate, great audio recording with no loud music to make the audio incomprehensible, back to back answered quite a few technical questions in my mind. I don't need to be in your class to realize what a great instructor you are. Please keep the videos coming!
Thanks so much for your video. I was looking at buying a new webcam and they are like $130~ here and then I saw this. I have a DSLR collecting dust and when I tested it out, it looks amazing! You are the only one talking about using a DSLR as a webcam.
Julie, for what it's worth, you make GREAT videos and should definitely keep it up! Your information is extremely useful and I love your editing. From your first video it sounds like you have lots of interests, but the "how to make great videos" niche is one that you do very well!
Absolutely love your channel, Julie!!! Which webcam would you suggest that is 1)wide angle to cover alot of space and 2) perfect for teaching a zoom dance class?? Thank you and really appreciateit
Just stumbled upon your channel -The presentation, editing, the way you give all the information in the description is just awesome. Thank you. Please upload more often, if you can.
Dude, don't know how I hadn't seen this before. Actually one of the best 'shootout' videos I've seen (even from a format, content and production style POV)! Great work!
All really well done, including some things that are shockingly rare on RUclips: great organization, great preparation, lots of internal links and external links. Keep it up!
@@JulieSchiro Question - have you tried the Sony ZV-1? I like the compact form factor. (I've been shooting with various RX-100 versions since the original.). No interchangeable lens and the 1" sensor isn't going to ever produce really shallow depth of field, but it has a lot of other things going for it.
Dearest Julie Schiro, Thank you very much for the video. Apart from cameras I have also understood the overall video quality, content quality is quite important. I felt satisfying to watch this than people that do weekly a video. On the other hand. I am really waiting for the next video, where you would teach how be on screen and give a presentation like the weather report :P I don't know the technicalities. I would not mind to wait for a popular series season/episode for an year. But this thing has become a necessity for me :) It would be amazing to have that setup. I am trying to figure it out but, please make it simple for us by making the video. :) Thank you for all the videos I watched them all. And hugs for the help!
Thanks so much @RGA. I saw Binging with Babish offer non-affiliate + affiliate links on his website and I loved it! Glad you like it too. And thanks for the nice words and support!
I have the Logitech C920 at home and at the office. It looks good with good lighting. I have found that Facebook and other streaming services change the way the image looks, lowering the resolution. When I am using the camera with the camera app, the image looks great. I like your content, thoroughness and fun mannerisms and facial expressions.
Ok, GET OUTTA HERE!!! FOUR VIDEOS??? I gotta say, I really enjoyed your video - the content, your presence, editing, style, b-roll. Really, really well done. With this level of production quality, I was expecting to find a catalog of 200 videos. All the schools of RUclips preach the "Must release weekly" mantra and you just blew them out of the water. Thanks for the hard work! Looking forward to your next release (in a couple of months).
😊 thanks for another lovely comment @onocoffee!! Really flattered. And absolutely - I'm not sure where the "post consistently, post weekly" mantra came from but I think quality over quantity can be a more strategic move. Ahaha you're right...my goal was a new release in Feb and...it's March now...
First of all, amazing job on the video. You're very likable, have a great voice and are doing A LOT very well. This video is fantastic! I'm subscribing. This is a channel I'm 100% sure the 25k subscribers it has now should turn into at least 250k. Second of all, these webcams are just... well they haven't improved since the last one I owned almost 20 years ago. It's kind of amazing how bad they are now.
Hahaha I know, not much innovation in the webcam department...lol. Thanks for the nice comment and the sub! Fingers crossed I'll get to 250K one of these days!
Great video. I went with the Logitech StreamCam, and very pleased with it. Have also got a USB capture dongle to use with my Samsung NX500 which has option to completely turn off OSD.
Hi @Edgar Fedgar, thank you so much! I saw Binging with Babish do it on his website and I liked it so much as a consumer and Babish fan, so I wanted to do the same
This is the second time i watch your video and i find myself sitting with a little smile on my face. You just explain it so charmingly and cute - i am sure its all due to the DLSR cam you are using! I want one! -D Thanks for the upload!
Thanks for putting informative stuff together. I teach yoga , do what would you suggest in terms of camera , mic and lights . I have to be away from camera to do the demo and then again come back closer to camera.
Thanks Rubina! I've started using the Rode Wireless Go (non-affiliate: amzn.to/3qcfmTI, affiliate amzn.to/3iXFNv2) and love it. It has it's own mic, but I use it with the SmartLav+ lav (non-affiliate: amzn.to/3nq8VtJ, affiliate amzn.to/2K80c0R). It's an investment, but I think a wireless lav is a good option if you're moving around. In terms of camera, what budget are you thinking?
one of the best most informative I have seen on subject. Good thing I have a Sony mirrorless for taking photos with several good lenses. Have been slowly exploring what it would take to make nice music videos, something I have not done at all. Have mics. even have idea for backing tracks. But was unsure of video. This clears that issue up for me pretty well. Thanks
Thanks alot, this video helped me so much deciding what I would like to buy, my budget is low so I decided to go with the logitech c270 as the vector webcam isn't available in my country, is that good tho?
@@JulieSchiro yep, as of your advice, I decided to invest the money on good lighting and a little bit in background rather than invest all in the camera😀 Loving all your videos, waiting for the next one to come out👀👍
Great video. Can you do a video on how to adjust your coloring settings? White balance, contrast, brightness, etc. And what the effect of each one does. I mess with mine might I can't seem to get it right.
On the brio or c920 try turning off all of the auto features like white balance and focus turn the exposure to -5 turn the gamma all the way down and play with the white balance till your color is right. Make sure you have the setting for maximum frames per second and it should be almost perfect. That is assuming of course you have good lighting at a decent color index like 95
Hey Julie; your videos are awesome ...not just because of the correct lighting and best cam; very informative, help a lot, and I like the sense of humor...
Great video. Congrats. Would it be a good idea to use an iPhone 11 Pro Max or iPhone 12, Pro Max, as the external camera instead? And what about the Logitech ScreenCam?

The mirrorless camera option produces amazing results. I would love to see more on camera placement, stands, setup, etc. Also, I already have a Nikon, so seeing other cameras would be nice too.
Thanks for the ideas! I would love to showcase other cameras...now I just need to get them...lol
Thanks for the excellent video, Julie! As a new professional on a budget this was really informative.
Hi @habspuck, thanks for the nice comment! And good luck with the new gig!
This video was awesome! Just ordered the Logitech!
How rare to find an honest, non-sponsored opinion. Thanks for doing all this research.
Thanks Denise!
Just saved me money. I have a m50 and I was looking at the papalook as a budget webcam . You helped me avoid wasted money and time and realize I had what I needed already
That is awesome!!!
2:01 ON POINT! I like it.
Thanks so much @PlayChessHard!
Hi Jason, Awesome! Love the streamcam.
Your down to earth style is so fresh and shows that you deeply understand the topics, thank you so much for creating this.
Thanks so much Dávid! Appreciate the nice comment.
Julie, I've said this before, but I have to say it again. Bravo! My only complaint is that I want to see MORE of your videos because you do such a great job. (Oh, and your silent takes...to make a point, are priceless. Again, YOU ARE FANTASTIC!!!!!
Ah thank you so much Reed! That really makes my night
I’ve been waiting for this episode! Yay you’re back!!
Content quality is top notch.
Thank you Pepega!
For me, the lowest quality camera is the best so it can hide my hideous mug. Thanks for video!
😂 thanks for the laugh Triton!
It's about time someone showed the different video images from several different webcams! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much Hugo!
@@JulieSchiro Thank you!
You make it look so fun... waiting for more from this channel...
Wow... Great job with this video. You paced it really well and you gave EXACTLY what I was looking for (demonstrations). Absolutely top quality content!
Really appreciate the nice comment @VJ4rawr2!
The best comparison, respectfully for your effort , i have try some camcorder for webcam, but audio not good because my wrongly set up. thank for your video.
Thank you so much Truc! 😊
So nice your video! thank you so much! i had so many question and you solved them , ily ♥
HI @Dart Toons! Thanks so much for the nice comment! 😊
It would be amazing to see a background styling and lighting from you. Also how you talk n present so neatly despite being new to youtube. You are helping many people with your content. Thanks
Thanks so much @The Witcher! I'll give that some thought!
really cool video! i think i am going to buy on of these cameras
Awesome, thanks for the nice comment!
damn the way this video was done was so refreshing, instantly subbed lmao
ahahaha! This made me laugh. Thanks for that, the nice comment, and the sub!
very nice review
Thanks so much @NEXT TV! 😊
This is how you create a comparison video!
You are really great at this. Don't stop making videos!
Thank you so much! Next one is on the way! (Just a *little* behind schedule, lol)
Thank you.
This comment totally made my day. Thank you so much @Jesus Rodriguez!
Thanks for keeping it short and throwing out the crappy ones imediately instead of wasting more time then necessary on them.
Wanted to gift myself a new webcam, realized I already have an A7iii which I can use, watched the full video for your personality and quirky nature, subbed for more. Good luck with your channel.
Oh that is awesome!! No need for one of the webcams, lol
i love that you show picture quality everything else ive watched just talks about functions but never shows image so keep up the good work.
I noticed that too! I was like, wait where is the footage?! lol. Thanks for the nice comment.
So in short for 90% of people the elgato hdmi to usb thing is your best bet? Since they may already have a great quality camera to hook up.
Yes! And the elgato camlink is an upgrade vs the software, so camlink all the way!
@@JulieSchiro Does it carry sound too? As I have a pretty good zoom mic on top of my Sony FDR-AX53, i assume it does since the signal is hdmi?
It does though OBS, and I see it as an option in Zoom under the mics, but I couldn't get it to work testing it just now by selecting the camlink "mic" in Zoom. I bet you could get it with a little troubleshooting though. And certainly through OBS.
@@JulieSchiro I use microsoft teams 99% of the time for work, maybe that is more compatible?
It might be! If you try it will you let me know?
Oh man, finally an honest review on this topic. I'm here hating my Brio and now I can't returned it because I threw the box out. I'm working on hooking up my Canon 80D, so I guess I'll need a better lens. Thank you!
Oooh good luck with the 80D! I bet it will look great!
Just watched all of your videos and I can't wait for more! Great quality and content, so much information in such short movies. I'm really impressed!
Ah thank you so much Marek!
gets right to the important parts and covers everything you'd want. Super detailed description with all the links too, much appreciated and very helpful!
Ah thanks so much!
Cheers
Hahaha, thanks so much John! This made me laugh. I'm working on a new one...definitely behind schedule but it's coming....
I don't think I have ever subscribed to a youtube channel before. Definitely didn't leave a comment before. But, this video deserves all the praise. Keep up the good work.
This totally makes my day! Thank you Amit 😊
Please don't stop here. You're doing so well. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks so much Kashio! I swear the next one is coming!
So glad I got a Sony a6400 before the pandemic for holiday photography.
Although I couldn't go on holiday in the end, it is now the best webcam I ever owned, and I use it for all my daily work meetings.
That is awesome!
X
Hahaha thanks for the nice comment and laugh Lord Rowley! 😊
Oh that is awesome!!! What a bummer it would be to buy a webcam with a DSLR just chilling in the house! Thanks for the nice comment 😊
@@JulieSchiro Looking forward to your next video, keep it up!
Thanks so much @Whoop Doop! I'd say the Streamcam would work great! It has a wide field of view. Brio has come down in price, too!
Just stumbled upon your channel -The presentation, editing, the way you give all the information in the description is just awesome. Thank you.
Please upload more often, if you can.
Thank you Rithik! The next one is coming, I swear!
@@JulieSchiro Fantastic, can't wait!
Dude, don't know how I hadn't seen this before. Actually one of the best 'shootout' videos I've seen (even from a format, content and production style POV)!
Great work!
Razer Kiyo is great in the dark and for streaming. The mic is surprisingly clear and the lighting adjustment is nice too. Great video BTW!
Oooh I should try mine in the dark. Thanks for sharing!
All really well done, including some things that are shockingly rare on RUclips: great organization, great preparation, lots of internal links and external links. Keep it up!
Thank you so much John!
Dearest Julie Schiro,
Thank you very much for the video.
Ah thank you so much for the nice commend and your support @spongedev! The next one is coming I swear! Working on it now (green screens).
I appreciate your honesty and hard work. And also the non-affiliate and affiliate that it is super cool. That's awesome. U deserve it!
One of the best channels I’ve run into so far. This was absolutely helpful
Wow, thanks so much Jack!
One money cannot buy if you want your video to look like this.. her energy..
Great video. Still waiting for the premiere date to your next video.
Thank you Adam! Working on the next one!
Awesome! Thanks for the nice comment @MeTube
Woah I've never seen a youtuber give both the affiliate and non affiliate links! Instant sub for being so thoughtful!
Thanks so much Kristian!!
Thanks
Awesome, thanks for the nice comment Rich!
Thanks alot, this video helped me so much deciding what I would like to buy, my budget is low so I decided to go with the logitech c270 as the vector webcam isn't available in my country, is that good tho?
It will probably be better than your built in laptop's camera! Keep me posted!
@@JulieSchiro yep, as of your advice, I decided to invest the money on good lighting and a little bit in background rather than invest all in the camera😀
Loving all your videos, waiting for the next one to come out👀👍
Great video. Can you do a video on how to adjust your coloring settings? White balance, contrast, brightness, etc. And what the effect of each one does. I mess with mine might I can't seem to get it right.
Hi Suzanne, thanks so much! That's a good idea. Yes, those are hard to get just right. I'll see if I can fit in some tips in one of the next videos!
Ah thanks so much Christian! Much appreciated 😊
Great video. Congrats. Would it be a good idea to use an iPhone 11 Pro Max or iPhone 12, Pro Max, as the external camera instead? And what about the Logitech ScreenCam?
I didnt know which webcam to get until i found your video. Made my decision so much easier!
Hi Jesus - that's awesome, thanks so much. Which one did you pick?
Awesome channel Julia!
I've watched a LOT of related video's recently, of channels that are way more established, and I liked your video's best of all. Really pleasant to watch and listen but above all very informative.
As are the updates, that could've made great video material imo.
Hope you'll keep it up, as you haven't posted a lot.
Hi Bart, thank you so much! Really appreciate the nice comment and support. I am so far behind on my next video but it IS coming!!
