    Thanks for a really easy to follow guide. I inherited my clothes airer when we moved it, and I love it. However, I was a bit intimidated by repairing the frayed rope. Your steps are great. Slow, precise and the close-ups of the pulleys were essential. Thanks again.

    The instructions say to screw the pulleys straight into the joists, but I didn't fancy putting this much strain on 100-year-old timbers above quite a brittle plaster-and-lath ceiling. For anyone in the same boat, I would advise ordering the longer screw rods and anchoring off cross battens bearing off the joists. If you screw the cross batten into the joists as well then it won't move when you screw the rod into it. In addition to spreading the weight of the airer across multiple joists, this affords you more freedom in choosing your fixing points, as you don't need to follow the line of any particular joist.
    I also put the screw rods directly into the chuck of my cordless drill, effectively treating them like drill bits, and drove them about 90% in to the battens, leaving me with only a couple of final twists by hand to install the pulleys. That saved a fair amount of time and effort.

    Brilliant video. Thanks My question is, is it possible to attach the pulleys onto a sloping ceiling? So one would be higher than the other and therefore the ropes on each end would be different lengths to ensure that the laths stay level? Or would wall brackets be a better solution?

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  2 года назад

      Hi Melissa, we don't recommend that you install it as you mentioned. If the pulleys aren't level with one another, the rope will then rub against the pulley housing which will cause it to quickly fray and eventually will break. We recommend it be installed like so on a sloping ceiling: www.castinstyle.co.uk/article.php/11/clothes-airer-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-for-ceiling-clothes-airers-and-pulley-airers-kitchen-maid-by-cast-in-style#slope

    Great video!!! Clothes aires are not common in the USA, however they are gaining in popularity.My question regarding the wood lath. Will these eventually mold with wet clothing hanging on them? How heavy is this to hoist up with a full load of laundry? Do you make clips that can be attached to actually hang clothes? Do you ship directly to the USA? I saw some items offered on various sites but not everything.

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  6 лет назад

      Hi Cathy, thanks for getting in touch. The wooden laths are a special dry kiln wood, so all their natural saps and oils have been removed so they don't stain your clothes. The wooden laths shouldn't go mouldy as long as you look after them correctly. We would recommend installing your airer in a dry room and from time to time just letting them dry out. We don't recommend staining the wooden laths as this will also stain your wet clothes. If you really want to stain them, then we only recommend using a clear satin varnish, but to be honest, you are better off leaving them as they are, just like the Victorian's used to. We do ship to the USA and you can select your delivery country during checkout. We do not sell any pegs/clips to actually hang the clothes but a lot of our customers use coat hangers, if needed. We hope this answers all your questions, but should you require any further information please do not hesitate to get in touch at support@castinstyle.co.uk.

    Great video! I discovered I have metal studs in the ceiling when I drilled into them. Grrr? Can I use toggle bolts in the metal ceiling studs or will that not be stable enough? should I use the bracket system and Toggle into the metal studs on the wall instead?

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  8 лет назад

      +D Bass Hi, Glad you like the video. Toggle bolts might be a problem as they as only supported by the plasterboard and the airer can get heavy when loaded with clothes. You could attatch a wooden beam along the top of the ceiling which yu can screw to the ceiling in several places, you can then screw the pulleys into this. Alternativly you can use our bracket methord and fix it to them. Hope this helps (a bit!!) Cheers

      Hi Michael,
      Whenever you go into brickwork or concrete, you need to use a rawl plug. We suggest using one as long as possible and about 8mm diameter. Thanks, glad you found the video helpful!

    I have fairly high ceilings. In the laundry room where I've installed my airer (using this excellent instructional video) when the airer is down at the level needed for loading, almost the entire cord is used and the bottom knot loops nicely on the cleat. The problem comes when I raise the airer up to the ceiling. At that point I have a lot of loose cord hanging down to and pooling on the floor. Is there some elegant knotting system or other way to gather the cord so that it looks more presentable?

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  Год назад

      Hi Roy.. many thanks for your question.. yes the easiest way, and possibly the neatest, is to use two cleats on the wall instead of just the one that you have. Space them top and bottom with a distance apart and you can wrap the rope around both the cleats. See the cleat you need here

    Thanks for this video! Would one of these work if I didn't want to use it as a clothes airer, but as a closet in my bedroom instead, to hold my entire wardrobe? All the videos I find are for drying clothes. Is there any reason I shouldn't do this?

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like a great idea Caitlin, our only concern is the weight of your entire wardrobe.
      The clothes airers need to be installed into wooden joists or a concrete ceiling. The weight of the airer and clothes is taken through the pulleys in the ceiling. The pulleys can take weights up to 20KGs. We have inserted a link below to take you to one of our customers photos that shows her airer fully loaded with clothes which we feel will be of use and interest to you:-

    I bought one of these and it's great, but I managed to put one of the pulleys in wonky which I didn't realise until I threaded the rope. At the start of the video you mention an easy way to get the screw back out, but you don't actually cover it, so could you let me know how I can get the screw out and redo it before my rope frays. Thanks :)

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  6 лет назад

      Hi Tom, Thanks for this. Yes I did mention you could get them out, and forgot to put it in the video. Actually you need to use a pair of grips of mole grips to grab hold of the stud in the ceiling so you can twist it to unscrew it. It will damage the thread on the screw rods so you won't be able to use them once you get them out, but it's not a problem as we will send you some new ones to replace them for free. Just let us know your order number or Postcode (so we can find your original order) and give us a call on 0800 009 6233 and we will send them out for you. Hope this helps. Many thanks John

    • @JohnLockecastinstyle

      Hi Peter, thanks for getting in touch. The wooden laths are a special kiln dried wood, so all their natural saps and oils have been removed so they don't stain your clothes. We don't recommend varnishing the wooden laths as over time it could come off onto your clothes but, If you really want to varnish them, then we only recommend using a clear satin varnish, but to be honest, you are better off leaving them as they are, just like the Victorian's used to. • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  6 лет назад

      Hi, yes it is possible, in fact they hold very well in concrete ceilings. All you need to do is to use a Rawl plug with our pulleys. You can purchase long Rawl plugs at good diy stores. You need one at least 2 inches long. Drill a hole in the ceiling to snugly fit the Rawl plug and simply screw the pulley into it . It also means you can position the pulley exactly where you need then. Hope this helps

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  3 года назад

      Hi, a useful way to remove the screw rod is by attaching two nut bolts onto the thread that the pulley usually screws onto. Then with a pair of pliers, you can grip onto the top nut bolt and twist the screw rid out of the ceiling. The second bolt stops the top bolt from screwing off whilst you are twisting.

  • @isaaca6445

    "...hopefully, we'll find the beam the other side..." I wouldn't just tap at the ceiling to "hopefully" locate the beam. I'd go into the ceiling space and, maybe use a long thin drill bit, thinner than the final screw that will be used to hold up the dryer, to locate the exact centre of the beams, drill through the beam so you can see it from the other side. Or, drill through the ceiling each side of the beam, then replaster, repaint it. The problem with approximating is that you could be drilling too near the outer edges of the beam and the weight of the installation plus clothes could cause it to fail. It's always worth the extra few minutes to get it exactly in the middle of the beam. To be extra safe, I'd even attach two pieces of wood, with strong glue and screws, either side of the hole you're drilling in the beam.

    • @CastinstyleCoUk
      @CastinstyleCoUk  6 лет назад

      As long as you have the pulleys installed the correct distance apart for your length airer (minimum 10cm overhang at either end) and two knots tied in the rope, your wooden laths should not fall out. The two knots will hold the rope together. The first knot is to be tied at your preferred loading height and the second at the raised height. Hope this helps?

      just watch the first bit, and the last bit, and see how you get on. you could fit it quicker than the video. 10 minutes.

      Some people don’t feel confident they have the skills without a clear explanation step by step. I’ve just rehung my airer after redecorating and I’d forgotten how to do it. The video is excellent, much like the products made and sold by the company. I’d recommend them to everyone.

    You Sir, have made the best video on RUclips, and prevented a divorce. I thank you!
